3-0 out of 5 stars Jump Start 1st grade math work book
Cute book, but seemed geared pretty low for 1st grade, not very challenging at all, I'm sort of disappointed.Might be good for the very beginning of 1st grade, by be 2nd semester kids ought to be way past this.

4-0 out of 5 stars nice basic math book
This book presents grade 2 math step by step from simple first grade topics. Most drills have colorful cartoons to attract kids. Stickers are given for rewarding hard work. Most sheets practice adding and subtracting facts. The basics are covered pretty solid, but a bit easy to serious math learners.

If your child has more interest, you should find additional math programs. A Houston community web site Beestar.org provides free math exercises every week with interesting real-life math problems. I signed up my son last semester and found it very useful. My son likes it, too. In the past he only played games on the Internet. Now he learns math online. I love it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun for 1st Graders

5-0 out of 5 stars Math Smart Jr.
Finally, a book for students who learn differently. My middle school son had his first "Now I get it!" from reading this book. Being a global and not linear learner makes memorization difficult. Now he understands the whole math picture. From F's at school to A's & B's in these quizes. It's great.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good math book....
This book provides a good selection of quizes and drills. It also has a useful glossary. Use Math Smart Junior together with Algebra the Easy Way. The explanations in Alegebra the Easy Way are better than in Math Smart Junior.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is NOT leisure reading.
As a parent of four children, it's refreshing to see a review book for a standardized test that doesn't try to beat, chat, and manipulate. These two scholars give fresh insights into historical problems while presenting students with a treasure chest of primary source material. This book deserves to be in every American history classroom in the United States!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Resource Source
We use this book at the local community college because it helps students distinguish between primary and secondary sources, historical fact and historical opinion. It is the richest collection of documents about major historical topics that I have been able to find. Each collection is compact and concise and makes for rich class discussion and writing assignments.

It has become an indispensable tool in our History department.

5-0 out of 5 stars The proof is in the pudding
My high school history teacher recommended this book to me to help prepare for the AP exam. While using it, I learned how to analyze primary sources and write essays based on evidence, not generalizations.

I credit my AP score to this book! (It was a five.) It will help lots!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book, sad review
This is a good book to use if you need to practice for the American History AP Exam.
I would just like to say that what I find sad is the review from the "history teacher" from New Orleans. If that is a teacher from New Orleans, I tremble at the state of public education in that state.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Effort to Help
This AP Book presents and organizes historical DBQ's previously unavailable to teachers and students alike. It is intended as a teacher's supplement, a book whose questions can be duplicated and shared with students. The questions are carefully (and expensively) researched document collections that are unrivaled for their breadth and depth. As students use these collections in their study of primary sources across the history curriculum, they also learn about the format of the DBQ on the AP exam. The book aims to help teachers help students learn to grapple with historical evidence and develop generalizations from the time period rather than a textbook. It is an invaluable teaching tool available at a very low cost with a very high benefit. The College Board has done us all a service by making these archival questions available for classroom usage.

The notes to teachers and students, written by an Ivy League professor and the only high school teacher to chair the AP Test Development Committee, entertain and educate as well as offer penetrating insights in to the construction of the largest AP examination itself.

Thank you, College Board. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Frustrating for parent and child.
This book was a total disappointment. I do not feel like it is particularly appropriate for Kindergarten, since implicit in the exercises is that the child already knows how to read. The bright colors distract and detract from the actual study of Reading & Writing. I got this book as part of a set that my daughter now uses as "coloring books." There is very little educational value here. ... Read more

Book Description

Song of Solomon explores the quest for cultural identity through an African American folktale about enslaved Africans who escape slavery by fleeing back to Africa. The novel tells the story of Macon "Milkman" Dead, a young man alienated from himself and estranged from his family, his community, and his historical and cultural roots. Author Toni Morrison, long renowned for her detailed imagery, visual language, and "righting" of black history, guides the protagonist along a 30-year journey that enables him to reconnect with his past and realize his self-worth. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Classic! A masterpiece!
"Song of Solomon" is the third book I've read of Toni Morrison. The prose is beautiful, subtle and unique. She is the winner of both the Pulitzer and the Nobel Prize. Read this novel, and you will understand why!

From the fantastic opening scene - when Robert Smith, the insurance collector, is about to "fly" from the top of a building, some forty, fifty people gathered on the ground to watch. One of them, a woman is standing there, singing, and another woman entering labor - to the ending, this book held my full attention. I just could not put this book down!

In telling this beautiful story, Morrison cleverly mix together elements of magic, myth, and folklore. The style of the book reminds me of the book "One hundred years of Solitude" by Gabriel García Márquez. Both novels share many similarities, and they are books which you have to "think" while reading them.

The characters in "Song of Solomon" are each very well developed. It is almost as if you know them all personally and one cannot help but to care deeply for them all. This is the only book I have read by Toni Morrison that features a male lead. I wouldn't know, but based on the opinion of other reviewers on Amazon.com Morrison masters the task of "being male" perfectly well.

"Song of Solomon" is considered to be Toni Morrison's masterpiece, and the novel is one of my all-time favorites. If you read only one novel by Toni Morrison, it should be this one!

5-0 out of 5 stars Tears, ebony tears, that turn to type and illuminate....
I've read SOS going on four or five times now, floored, awestruck, enraptured each time, every twist and turn a new surprise arrives. Milkman is a wonderful archetype for a Black man searching for what he can claim as his own. His mind, his body, his sex, money? What is his and not tainted by the past, by racism, by internal family feuding? This is what I call a "Patience Book", you have to sit with it the way you would sit with a child on a Sunday afternoon. Patience. You have to breathe in rhythm with this book. Morrison is one of those few writers that it's silly to ask all of your questions of even after you finish the book. Pick it right back up and breathe, savor each page, have patience. It is not an easy read for it is literature and you are reading, truly reading. Not surfing through pulp fiction knwoing that the hero lives, the heroine is saved and everybody sleeps well on the last page. Uh uh. Patience. What else but patience could you use to understand Magdalene, Pilate, Corinthians? My all time, all time, all time favorite literary scene that chills me, tears me up, knocks me around hard and then uplifts me: Pilate at the funeral. "That was my baby, That's my baby, AND SHE WAS LOVED!"

Honey, welcome to real African American literature, impossible to translate to film for this is patience reading. Patience, free at last, free at last!

4-0 out of 5 stars A Morrison Classic With Fewer Tears
Song of Solomon fits well into the classic Toni Morrison genre of heart-wrenchingly poetic and painfully beautiful stories, but it is a bit different from her other works at the same time. The main character of this novel is a male, but the deeper thematic undercurrents channel strongly towards feminism (or in this case womanism, black women's feminism). It's a story of finding yourself and your roots, your true name. The story follows a North to South journey for a young black man. Filled with symbolism and mythology, the novel is rich and engrossing. The motif is based on old stories of African American slaves who shed their bonds and flew back to Africa. Your interpretation of this novel will lead you in one of two directions: did they fly or did they perish? The novel poses this question to you in an eloquent and beautiful way. In the end, your interpretation of this novel may tell you something about yourself and what you believe in.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautifully written and with a message
Even though it is beautifully written, this book is not for everyone, because some might find searching for the meaning tedius. However, I highly recommend this book if you like searching for a meaning. On the top, the story told is wonderful. Under the surface, the message of love and finding your family roots is outstanding. This is a great book for someone who is struggling to find who they are. I was reminded of McCrae's "The Bark of the Dogwood--A Tour of Southern Homes and Gardens," or perhaps "The Color Purple" in that the characters have to really go through a lot before they find themselves. Such is the case with "I Know." Morrison generally writes in this style of an underlying message, and it keeps her readers intrigued until the end of the book. Milkman's search is much like what every teen in the world wants. He says "I just want to be on my own. Get a job, live on my own" However, through Milkman, Morrison shows her readers that they must first take care of their responsibility to their family and culture. However, when love and respect for culture is discovered, the following lesson can be learned, "Without leaving the ground, she could fly. Therefore, this is an important book to read for thos wanting freedom, so they can learn from the mistakes of Milkman. Frankly, I don't know how anyone could not like this book, if not for the wonderful story, then at least for the wonderful writing.

Would also recommend: "Bark of the Dogwood"

5-0 out of 5 stars History Is Identity?
In Song of Solomon, Toni Morrison takes the view - a common one - that we have to know our history to know ourselves. I don't really agree but in this case it makes a great story. The characters in her novel don't make calculations or follow strategies: they do what they have to do. The history that motivates their actions is an emotional, personal one. Morrison's preoccupation with this personal history is reflected in her use of unusual names: names that are given "from yearnings, gestures, flaws, events, mistakes, weaknesses . . . Macon Dead, Sing Byrd, Crowell Byrd, Pilate, Reba, Hagar, Magdalene, First Corinthians, Milkman, Guitar . . . ." Her characters are powerful, larger-than-life people, and clashes between them quickly escalate to life-and-death struggles. At the same time, they have a great capacity for empathy and self-sacrifice. Highly recommended. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very comprehensive, as it claims
I have tried many workbooks, and this is one of my favorites. It is very complete, and has tons of different activities. It's about 600+ pages, but it is very diverse. There are, for example, 5 pages for the letter "A" so the child doesn't get bored, but there is enough to help reinforce the concept being taught. It is full color, and has good illustrations. My only complaint would be that it is meant to be geared for 4-year-olds, but I think it is better suited for 2 and 3 year olds, and four year olds who don't like workbooks, per se, because children who love workbooks will have most likely mastered most of the information by age four.It has bright illustrations, simple directions, and is not dependant on the previous page to understand the lesson, so even a child who has mastered all the tasks most likely will enjoy it.I thought the math section was just a bit skimpy (100+ pages) compared to the reading (200+ pages) and other skills (200+) pages, but all in all is pretty balanced and well worth the money. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars It is a good math workbook
My kindergarten daughter just finished this workbook. She enjoyed this kind of fun and thoughtful workbooks much more than the boring regular ones. Since she could answer over 80% of the questions independently and only needed some help from parents in not more than 20% of the questions, I think this workbook is more likely for kids at first grade level or even lower, and is probably designed for regular kids, not necessary for the gifted & talented. I believe many children will like it and I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars It deserves 5 stars if it is not for the 3rd graders
Unlike most of the math workbooks that only repeat boring concepts and computations, this workbook gives kids a thoughtful and vivid practice as well as a deeper level of thinking in math. Kids enjoy doing this kind of practice. However, the questions in this workbook are too easy for third graders, because my girl in kindergarten was able to deal with them. She finished more than 50% of the questions independently, and for the rest she needed some help or hint from parents. I think this workbook is more likely for ordinary 2nd graders, or even for lower graders if they are bright, not necessary for the gifted. I highly recommend it if it is for 2nd or lower graders.
I have also found some mistakes in this book: On page 11, questions 2 and 4, the longest route should be: Anytown-Cityway- Dustyroad-Bigville-Elkfalls; and it should be 54 miles instead of 52 miles. On page 47, question 2, the definition of "day" is confusing: If "one day" is defined as 24 hours, the answer should be May 27. Obviously, the definition of "one day" here means "one day time", i.e. 12 hours. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent preparation for the AP exam
My daughter used this book to prepare for the AP and felt that it was excellent, especially for the writing part of the exam. She thought the book was logical in its flow, and liked that they gave example essays and explained why each essay was good, poor, or mediocre. This helped her understand how they score the exam.

While she did not need the advice on the multiple choice, the advice provided was sound and complete. She said the sample problems were just like on the exam. The book explains "literary terms", but does not have a vocab list. It advocates that if your teacher is not giving you vocab lists, you need to get some. She thought they may have pointed you to a web site but couldn't remember for sure, since she had good vocab lists from her teacher.

My daughter had a very good, demanding teacher, but felt that this book gave her additional help. She scored a 5 on the exam. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Talk About Great Advice
This book gave me an edge on the rest of the students in my class. At first I thought that it would be a little sketchy. I felt that the only way to cure my laziness is not to be lazy. This book teaches you how to be more efficient with your time to maximize your potential. For a Dog Eat Dog environment (especially concerning college) this book is amazing. The amazing advice coupled with the great and intellegent humor makes this book a MUST BUY!

1-0 out of 5 stars Misleading Title and reviews
This book doesn't have anything in it that I found helpful in trying to get my "lazy" but bright student motivated.

I can imagine it only contributing to the smarty attitude of some bored students.

I really wasn't looking for suggestions about how to get the teacher off track so that class is less boring or how to stroke the professor's ego so you get a better grade. This book should really be listed under humor or spoofs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Holy Crap....
The man is a genius. This book every student should have, whether lazy or not. He gives great advice. You should definitely listen to what he has to say, because he's an English teacher himself... Wait a minute. He's MY English teacher. Oh well. Still, this is the best book you could ever buy. ... Read more
