5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book!
I purchased this book to use as part of an 8th grade Grammar curriculum. It is wonderful! The stories and activities made learning the concepts fun. My son didn't even realize that he was doing schoolwork. An excellent choice for anyone learning grammar - or someone just brushing up on their skills. Two thumbs up!

This book is filled with useful information and helpful exercises. It helped me to understand grammar concepts my own English teacher could not explain to me. Thanks to this terrific and fun-filled book, I was able to get through 8th grade English easily. My teachers and parents have noticed a change in my papers as well as a better understanding of grammatical concepts. Anyone who is lost in the world of English grammar, should pick up this book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT FUN!
I am 11 years old and I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book, both as a story and as a no-stress way to learn new vocabulary. I am actually using the many words I learned in the book ~ it's easy because of the manner in which the book is written! I even enjoyed the quizzes at the end of each chapter ~ they were fun. I would save this book for after I had done my other work (I am a homeschooler) because I enjoyed this book so much. It was my inspiration to get finished with the other things so I could get back to this story!

The book is about three kids and a cat who have worldwide (and outer space!) adventures that lead them away from their real goal, which is to find Bridget's parents. You learn the new vocabulary from reading it in the context of their conversations. No memorizing lists! Great fun!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for readers who like to expand their vocabulary
I am a 7th grader of a middle school, and this is what I think of this outstanding book. This book had a very interesting way of teaching... Instead of a textbook, this book was made into a chapter book with several excellent stories about adventures with three kids and a gargantuan, black cat. The stories were well put together and the advanced words fitted in perfectly. I shared my ideas with my family, and we bought more books of the same series. I think younger kids should just read the book for the stories if the words are a bit too complicated for them to remember, but I'm sure that they will enjoy it. Readers will no longer be oblivious about grammer. As a matter of fact, they might even excel in the field of grammer and writing. Anyway, to me, the words in the book were extremely easy to understand, because they were so well placed, that the context clues made the definitions very clear and obvious. There was also a glossary in the back that gave the definitions to the bold-faced words. Unfortunately, the glossary did not have definitions to all of the words, but if you have a dictionary, you should have no problem. Overall, this was a fantastic book leaving me craving for more.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent concept, but beware
I bought this book for my third grader and the vocabulary is a good level. My child already knows many of the words but is learning new ones from this book. However, parents should be made aware that they might consider some of the content inappropriate for their children. I personally do not care to enlighten my child on the concept of the 60s hippie culture and all that that entails. Fortunately for me, I glanced ahead while reading aloud and saw the word cohabitation so I was able to avoid a discussion of shacking up. The characters also flippantly use the name of the Christian diety, as in "Oh, my ...." As I said, it is a great concept but read WITH your child if you object to the moral values discussed above.

5-0 out of 5 stars My elementary school age kids love this.
I bought this tape for my elementary age niece and two nephews. They have played this tape for weeks every night at bed time. They even fight over who gets to listen to it in the car. All of their vocabulary had sky rocketed. They are using "big" words properly and have no problem correcting the adults when we use them wrong. The way the new words are weaved into the stories give the kids the handle to truly understand what the word is, and what the correct usage is for any given situation. My sister and I are so impressed with this tape. We wish there were more of these.

5-0 out of 5 stars Word Smart Review
This book is a master piece. The exciting adventures of Barnaby, Babette, Bridget, and their cat body Beauregard turns the "boring" studies of vocabularies into a challenging game. Wordly Smart increases your amount of vocabularies largely. Without your knowing, you might just take your "game" to a whole new level. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars children need this book
Along with the first book, this book has the best new-word learning assistance per time spent. The only other way is to read copiously and you how much time that would take. The stories are almost fairy-tale like but I loved them. This is a must have. I bought a dozen for all my junior relatives.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not just for kids!
As a college English teacher, I have never taught grades 4-8, the target group for this book. I discovered it by accident, and yet, even before finishing chapter three, I had decided to incorporate "Helping Students Write the Best Research Reports EVER!" as a supplementary text in all of my college research, speech, and writing classes.

Oh! how I wish every student I've ever taught could have had the benefit of learning research writing from Lois Laase and Joan
Clemmons. Most young people come to college without a clue to the excitement of discovery inherent in any research project.

The best way to learn anything is to teach it. Teaching college students how to teach research to children while learning research techniques from college textbooks is a wonderful way to introduce them to the wonderment and fascination of information-gathering.

So if you are a teacher of writing or speech at any level from grade school through college, you will find this book an astonishing treasure trove of ideas and specific lesson plans to help students begin a journey that will benefit them for the rest of their lives.

I can hardly wait for my fall writing, research, & speech classes to begin so that I can incorporate this book into my curriculum.

By the way, if you are a home-schooling parent, this book will help you spark enthusiasm for learning in ways you've never even thought of. It is a teaching and learning treasure. ... Read more

Dickens considered Great Expectations one of his "little pieces," and indeed, it is slim compared to such weighty novels as David Copperfield or Nicholas Nickleby. But what this cautionary tale of a young man raised high above his station by a mysterious benefactor lacks in length, it more than makes up for in its remarkable characters and compelling story. The novel begins with young orphaned Philip Pirrip--Pip--running afoul of an escaped convict in a cemetery. This terrifying personage bullies Pip into stealing food and a file for him, threatening that if he tells a soul "your heart and your liver shall be tore out, roasted and ate." The boy does as he's asked, but the convict is captured anyway, and transported to the penal colonies in Australia. Having started his novel in a cemetery, Dickens then ups the stakes and introduces his hero into the decaying household of Miss Havisham, a wealthy, half-mad woman who was jilted on her wedding day many years before and has never recovered.Pip is brought there to play with Miss Havisham's ward, Estella, a little girl who delights in tormenting Pip about his rough hands and future as a blacksmith's apprentice.

I had never thought of being ashamed of my hands before; but I began to consider them a very indifferent pair. Her contempt for me was so strong, that it became infectious, and I caught it.
It is an infection that Pip never quite recovers from; as he spends more time with Miss Havisham and the tantalizing Estella, he becomes more and more discontented with his guardian, the kindhearted blacksmith, Joe, and his childhood friend Biddy. When, after several years, Pip becomes the heir of an unknown benefactor, he leaps at the chance to leave his home and friends behind to go to London and become a gentleman. But having expectations, as Pip soon learns, is a two-edged sword, and nothing is as he thought it would be. Like that other "little piece,"A Tale of Two Cities, Great Expectations is different from the usual Dickensian fare: the story is dark, almost surreal at times, and you'll find few of the author's patented comic characters and no comic set pieces. And yet this is arguably the most compelling of Dickens's novels for, unlike David Copperfield or Martin Chuzzlewit, the reader can never be sure that things will work out for Pip. Even Dickens apparently had his doubts--he wrote two endings for this novel. --Alix Wilber ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Very True Side of Human Nature
Charles Dickens' novel Great Expectations explores the side of human nature that many do not like to read in novels. In the United States, in the 21st Century, people would rather read about romantic-style plots where all turns out well for the protagonists. Dickens, however, chooses to illuminate what man can really be capable of: betrayal, duplicity, unfaithfulness, and a handful of other negative characteristics.

Definitely an interesting novel, Great Expectations will undoubtedly have its audience intrigued and constantly pondering.

I would highly recommend this masterpiece.

1-0 out of 5 stars CHARLES DICKENS IS EXTREMELY OVERATED!
I love to read great books like BRAVE NEW WORLD by Aldous Huxley or FAR FROM THE MADDING CROWD by Thomas Hardy. I love THE AENEID by Virgil, THE ODYSSEY by Homer. I read both long versions of LES MISERABLES and THE HUNCHBACK OF NORTE DAME by Victor Hugo. I read THE RISE AND FALL OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE by Gibbons and gained much knowledge from doing so. I LOVE TO READ.

But GREAT EXPECTATIONS was a GREAT DISAPPOINTMENT! I was somewhat amused until chapter ten where I felt the book became psycho-babble. I was also disappointed in TALE OF TWO CITIES. I could not endure the first two chapters! Dickens did a fine job on THE CHRISTMAS CAROL. But I will NEVER read another of his books!

1-0 out of 5 stars this book sucks
I hate this book. It is extremely boring and it is way too long. There are too many characters to keep track of and many of them are extremely similar. Do not read this unless forced to. I like to read, but this nearly put me to sleep.avoid at all costs

1-0 out of 5 stars AHHH VERY boring
This book was very boring. Details in a book make it interesting but the extended details in this book made it nausiating. This book had a very interesting plot and many good ideas but the way it was writen didnt appeal to most of the students in my school that read it. A poll was taken and about 73% of the students in the school liked this book. What does that show about the book?

1-0 out of 5 stars Great Expectations is possibly the worst book ever
You guys should never read this book ever

5-0 out of 5 stars Better than I had expected!
This book was picked up on a whim as a graduation gift and I was pleasantly surprised at the depth of insight this book relays while not being preach-y. The book is written by a high school teacher and parent who undertands the pressures young adults have encountered when going away to college. When you read this book you truly get the feeling that he wants to help the reader make good choices. Morality issues are addressed in text and cartoon and the points are made without turning off the reader. Of course there are plenty of practical issues addressed such as "What should I bring to college?" to make it very worthwhile just for that reassurance.
