5-0 out of 5 stars Just what I needed
I could not expect anything more from a thesauras. This has all the words I, through my preteen years, have needed, without boggling my mind with lots of words that I never try to use. I don't feel overwhelmed, but I DO find the information I need.

5-0 out of 5 stars How can I describe this Thesaurus
This thesaurus is:
Fantastic
Excellent
High Quality
Stupendous
Superiour
and least, but not last, very good!

All joking aside, it's a thesaurus. It's a good value and as good as any other thesaurus.

5-0 out of 5 stars Elementary Teacher Prizes This Book!
_The_Clear_and_Simple_Thesaurus_Dictionary is the most practical thesaurus I have found for use with my fourth- and fifth-grade students. Unlike many thesauruses, it is formatted in a style that students (and adults!) will find familiar and easy to use. While not as comprehensive in scope as those designed for college use, this thesaurus allows students the satisfaction of finding synonyms or associated words for almost any word they might need. I had not found this to be true of other "beginning" thesauruses, which was a frustration to both my students and to me. This gem was a major find, and is now in regular use in my classroom. I highly recommend it to any teacher of intermediate or junior high age students, as well as to parents who want a truly helpful resource for their school-age children. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great book!
I bought this for my 6 year old. She loves to read and really loves to write stories. She can use this book, but it will also grow with her. She should benefit from this one for several years. In the meantime, we have a lot of fun as she's learning "what another word for___?"

What would you do if your teacher told you to stop using the word "nice" so much? If you had the Scholastic Children's Thesaurus, you'd flip through it until you found "nice" between "new" and "noise." Then you'd find your options: "pleasant," "agreeable," "good-natured," "delightful," and "fantastic" (defined as "extremely nice or good!").Nearby, a color bar warns, "Nice is a very general word to describe someone you like or something that makes you feel good, but it is not very specific. Be careful not to overuse it. Often a stronger or more specific word is better." At this point, you might be rolling your eyes because your teacher already said all that, but you'll be a more pleasant, agreeable, good-natured, delightful, and fantastic writer for your efforts!

John K. Bollard's thesaurus, playfully illustrated by Mike Reed, contains more than 500 main "headwords" and 2,500 synonyms, but if you can't find the word you're looking for--"energetic," for example--you can flip to the index in the back where you'll find "Energetic--See Lively." Lively leads you to "active," "energetic," and "vigorous." All synonyms include a definition as well as one or more sample sentences. This fine thesaurus--paired with the Scholastic Children's Dictionary--will help any young writer make appropriate word choices, think more critically about language, and therefore proceed to the head of the class! 4-0 out of 5 stars Good quick reference
A good quick reference book, but I will say that some words are not listed. It is focused for 2nd - 5th grade in my opinion. A handy addition for a home reference library!

3-0 out of 5 stars Not the best resource.
We found this book to be lacking in the number of entries/words it carries. My daughter is in a 3rd grade GT class, and a number of the words on her spelling list are not even included in this book. I find the book to be average, at best.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great teacher help
I use this book in my classroom. It helps my students come up with better ways of saying and writing things. It is quicker for them to look through than a thesaurus. It helps ESL students widen their vocabulary easily. It also helps me when I work on papers while getting my Master's degree. It is a great aid. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Short and Sweet, But not quite Perfect.
I was immeadiately drawn to this book's pleasing asthetic appeal. Tired of newsprint paged, miniature typed editions, the DK Concise Dictionary/Thesaurus was an attractive competitor. I brought this book as my first thesaurus and since then have found it helpful in writing letters and papers. Its a perfect hand-held size and the medium weight pages are also a nice quality. The format makes the book great for quick reference.
However the book is truly lives up to the description of concise. At times I felt frusterated because it seemed almost too limited. I recommend this book for younger writers and students. I have recently graduated from highschool and although I will take this book with me to college, I out grew the text early in my highschool career.

5-0 out of 5 stars DK Dictionary Thesaurus
This is a fabulous combination dictionary/thesaurus all in one. The text is easy to read and the book has great visual cues. Many other books we looked at had type that was really small and hard to read. It is easy to carry, not too heavy. A must for middle school. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars The book's great, but kids won't use it.
3 stars is a compromise between 5 for the book, and 1 for the fact that my 9 year old has never used it. Kids will use dictionaries, but they won't use a thesaurus.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Perfect Children's Thesaurus
The American Heritage Thesaurus is a must reference book for any home with children. Each researched word, printed in blue large bold print, is accompanied with the a description, printed in black, of the part(s) of speech the word can be used, several best choice synonyms, and a few lesser utilized synonyms. In addition, an example sentence incorporating the researched word is provided. Occassionally a list of antonyms is provided for the researched word. Researched words are easily located as a result of a large space between each word. Each two page spread usually contains one or two color photographs adding some visual appeal. In summary, this thesaurus is highly recommended and is an invaluable resource for any child of reading age.

5-0 out of 5 stars Word for Word....
This review refers to the "Student Thesaurus" by Elizabeth Ryan(Troll Pub).....

Give your child the gift of words. A great beginning to discovering how reference books can be used as a tool for those school reports is important. This book will easily help the young student choose the right words that they are searching for. It will help to improve the quality of their work and their vocabulary as well.

This one is designed for use by students beginning around age 9 and can probably be helpful through the Junior High level. It begins with a great introduction on how and why to use a Thesaurus. There are 2000 words(listed alphabetically of course) with easily interchangeable synonyms that are geared for this age group. They will also find the antonyms to many of the words which are distinguisable in RED print. Some great cartoon illustrations by Rick O'Boyle are also found throughout to help convey the meaning of some words.Under "help" for example you will find.. assist, aid, support,cooperate... the antonym "hinder" and a great little drawing of a girl resuing a cat from a tree.

It may also be helpful for writing reviews for Amazon, but don't tell anybody!.......Laurie ... Read more
