5-0 out of 5 stars Great for all ages!
I am a mother of 3 aged 5,3 & 1 year. All three of my children love this book. They think the Grouchy Ladybug is a silly bug. They enjoy "reading" along with me because the book is so repetitive! Even my one year old sits & listens intently to the pattern. "Ya' wanna fight! " "If you insist..." "Oh- you're not big enough." Repetition is the best tool in teaching to read & Eric Carle books are PERFECT for that! The other concepts he introduces in his books such as TIME & DAYS are helpful in teaching too. GREAT WORK, MR. CARLE!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Wonderful World of Insects
The Grouchy Ladybug is a wonderful Eric Carle book. I love his mosiac illustrations, and the moral he projects. The grouchy ladybug is mean to all the other insects that he meets. He does not want to share the aphids on his leaf with the friendly ladybug. He ends up making no friends at all, and the animals he is rude to are getting bigger and fiercer as the book goes on. In the end the grouchy ladybug ends up on the same leaf he started out on, and shares the aphids.

Note to teachers: This is a great book to introduce a unit on insects. Most students probably don't understand what aphids are, and the ladybugs feed on them. You could also incorporate all of the other animals in the text to do a unit on animals. There are so many wonderful teaching oportunities with all of Eric Carle's books, but this is one of my favorites.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book--one of my child's favorites
This is a great book and the repetition is great for a emerging young reader. My 3 year old can "read" this book to himself and his baby sister because he can anticipate what will happen when he turns the page. He has language delays due to hearing problems when he repeated ear infections and these repetitious books that Eric Carle has done have been wonderful with slowly introducing him to language.

1-0 out of 5 stars Repetition, repetition, repetition....
After reading The Very Hungry Caterpillar to my son enough times to have it memorized, I bought this book thinking that it would be a nice change, and expecting The Grouchy Ladybug to have a moral somewhere along the lines of Alexander And The Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day (if you haven't read that to your kids, get it). I found The Grouchy Ladybug to be repetative to the point of parental abuse. Eric Carle has good children's books, but this one was definitely not my favorite. The only thing my son has learned from it is "Hey, You, Wanna Fight?" It was okay to read once or twice, but the next garage sale, it's going to mysteriously vanish. I would suggest The Very Hungry Caterpillar instead, if you don't have it.

1-0 out of 5 stars This book is crap
Eric Carle has done better. Read the "Very Quiet Cricket". This book is extremely repetitive and isn't really even a story so much as an excuse for the mediocre illustrations and a kind of irritating gimmick of having differently sized pages. These pages are have for my son to turn also.

I love reading real children's stories to my kids, and I don't mind some repetition (e.g., "Guess how much I love you" and "Are you my Mother?" are great...) But the ladybug keeps saying the same thing over and over and over. Yeah, I've hid the book from my kids and they don't miss it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Sweet Kitty!
Whether you're teaching your kids to tell time or not, this book is so charming! The illustrations are beautiful, and perfectly capture the lazy/hungry/cuddly nature of cats. It works as a picture book for younger children, with not too many words on a page, and I imagine it would be a good teaching tool as well.

4-0 out of 5 stars Cat lovers delight
This pleasantly simple picturebook features a nicely illustrated cat who describes her day. A foldout moveable clock allows children to match the hands of the clock with the time of day being described by Mother Cat. The pictures are soothing and the work is both comforting and fun.

4-0 out of 5 stars A cat lovers' book
We purchased this book for our two and three-year-old daughters as a way of introducing math concepts through literature. The concept of time passing is told firsthand by the cat as we travel with her throughout the day.

5-0 out of 5 stars SUPERB TEXT. A MUST HAVE.
I love reading this book to all of our children: from the 4 year old to the newborn. It has a rich text with wonderful images for each day of the week. I think everyone should end and begin their day with the kind, welcoming thoughts this book evokes. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful on the eyes and the ears
This charming book of daily prayers is an invition to consider different aspects of prayer. Each day focuses on a different prayer theme with a relatively short lyrical poem. In addition to exploring different topics for prayer, it reinforces learning about the days of the week.

Perhaps most engaging are the pictures that accompany the prayers. The bold, colorful florals have the details and nuances to attract the sophisticated young reader without distracting from the content.

5-0 out of 5 stars Touching and sweet
This daily book of prayers written by Cynthia Rylant is a calming and sweet addition to a child's bedtime routine. The words to each prayer are set in an easy to read rhyming pattern that any child can read or memorize in very little time. The perfect book for those parents of children who are themselves the most spiritual of all creatures. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great with predicting!
This book is great to use for predicting outcomes. I just fold that second page back, read and show the first page, and then have the students guess what the second page might be. My students are 6th grade and they really enjoyed it. Some predictions were very easy, however, some really made you think.

5-0 out of 5 stars Innovative!
My 4 year old daughter loved this book when I got it from the library. I first thought that it might be a bit confusing for her but she understood it perfectly and has memorized the entire thing. This book is definately a keeper.

4-0 out of 5 stars Telling Time After Reading Through Once!
Our almost 6 year old has been wanting to be able to tell time for the past year. We've tried many different manipulatives with not much luck past the o'clocks and X:30. After reading this book just once, she's now actually telling time on analog clocks. It's slow going, but she really gets it now. Our daughter LOVES the poem at the end. It also covers calendar time - from one day to a millenium.

The book is VERY interactive in the way it's written when the parent reads to the child. My only complaint is that it's never explained about what hour it is when the hour hand is between numbers or almost on the next number. ... Read more

On the first day of school, Emily's teacher, Miss Cribbage, tells the class that they will make a new number friend every day for the first 100 days of school. Everyone will have a number book in which to write numerical discoveries and musings. Eager Emily dives right into the project. On the second day of school, Miss Cribbage teaches a song called "Tea for Two." On day three, Emily writes about her school bus, No. 3. In square dancing, Emily learns that there are four corners to a dancing square. She picks five different vegetables from her garden for her father to use in his tomato-zucchini-pepper-carrot-eggplant soup. From day one to day 100, Emily and her classmates expand their creative and mathematical skills as they immerse themselves in the exciting early days of school.

Rosemary Wells, beloved author and illustrator of dozens of picture books, and creator of the mischievous Max character (Max's First Word, Max's Chocolate Chicken, and others), has accomplished a remarkable feat: finding 100 days' worth of entertaining "number friends." The 100th day of school can be an important milestone--and a great learning tool! Emily is an adorable Wellsian bunny, complete with pudgy cheeks and sweet little jumpers and overalls. 5-0 out of 5 stars Emily's First 100 Days of School is a delightful book.
In this very charming book, Emily starts school and her teacher, Miss Cribbage, has them write a number down in their number books for each of the first 100 days of school. The pages are bright and colorful and the numbers are easy for small children to read. Each number has a lesson to be learned from it. Ms. Wells' characters are as always cute and adoreable. My twin four year girls absolutely loved this book. It is an excellent book for teaching numbers from 1 to 100. I would recommend it to anyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another winner by Rosemary Wells--just delightful!
This book is really special! Emily counts off the first 100 days of school by talking about each and every number and matching it up with something to do with that day--her sister Eloise learning to play Seventy Six Trombones, her class learning about the nine planets, the prizewinning pumpkin at the fair weighing 33 pounds, and so on! The book is oversized, and filled with great Wells pictures. In the short piece of info given with each number, we get to know Emily's family and the joys and sorrows of her first year of school. We've read this book over and over. It's great for a child just starting to get excited about numbers, as they can look up their favorite ones to see what that number has associated with it. It would also be a great book for a child starting school. If you love Rosemary Wells, as I do, you knew you would like this book, but even I was impressed with how special it is!

4-0 out of 5 stars Emily's 100 days
Emily is so excited to go to Kindergarten. Her teacher helps the children to count off the first 100 days of school, and every day has a number.

Each page has from 1 - 4 days of school illustrated on it. Each numbered day is significant, either on a historical, cultural or kindergarten level.

Future and current kindergartners and their parents will be charmed by this book.

My only reservation about it is that it is 58 pages long. This is not a book that you could read in one sitting with your average 5 or 6 year-old. My recommendation would be to do it in small chunks - once a week or once a month - throughout the beginning of the school year.

It has wonderful ideas of how to celebrate and enjoy the school year in small ways, including the traditions of many cultures. Not only is it a great way to count, but also a way to explore cultural diversity.

Any fan of Rosemary Wells will be well satisfied with this book.

If you are looking for a book that you can read in one sitting with your child, try Miss Bindergarten Celebrates the 100th Day by Joseph Slate. This book is actually an alphabet book in which each student's name starts with a different letter, and there is a sentence telling what each is bringing to celebrate the 100th day. ... Read more

Book Description

Celebrate the cycle of the day, as the earth turnes to and then away from the sun, and meet a wide array of animals from America's east coast to the west as they work and rest, eat and play, just as humans do.

Jean Craighead George's lyrical greeting to the day becomes a sweeping panorama of the American countryside with Wendell Minor's evocative, dramatic paintings.

Good morning, the dawn,
when the earth is turning from night to day
and waking begins.
Newbery Medalist Jean Craighead George's lyric greeting to the day celebrates how the earth turns to and then away from the sun. Starting at dawn on the East Coast, then moving to afternoon in the Midwest, and finally evening in the West, young readers will meet a wide array of animals at work, rest, and play as the day progresses across America. With evocative, dramatic paintings by distinguished artist Wendell Minor, this stunning picture book provides a sweeping panorama of the American countryside as well as a remarkable look at how an animal's day parallels our own.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not only do I love this book, but my babe does too
Sure the pictures don't exactly match the words, but the pictures are beautiful and the verse is lyrical. This is my near two-year-old's favorite book. She walks around the entire time saying, "Morning, Morning, Morning."

I also think that this would be a perfect book for a family interested in observing daily rhythms and routine, especially Waldorf-oriented families.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Naturally Wonderful Children's Book
A great children's book with wonderful illustrations that will spark young children's interest into the animals they may send around them.

I have always loved George's work and now there is a book that even the youngest of children can enjoy, from this nature loving Newberry Medal-winning author.

To date I have bought four copies as gifts for friends and family members who just had newborn babies.

1-0 out of 5 stars pictures don't match the words making it an annoying book
The illustrations are realistic and high quality. I have issus wth the organization of the verses and the verses not matching the illustrations.

One problem lies in that each verse cites up to five different animals and that not all the animals are pictured on the pages. This is very confusing for my four year old who asks me where a certain animal is pictured and it simply is not there. Other pages where the verse references time of day (afternoon) and no animals, show animals. Why not have pictured simple landscapes with skies that relate to that time of day instead? For example the picture for noon doesn't even show a sun, let alone a bright shining sun, it shows a close up of bison, and bison are not mentioned in that passage at all.

Sometimes the animals within one passage are not even related to each other by habitat. An example is mentioning a stork, killdeer and a cardinal in the same passage. Yes, they are all birds but they just aren't in the same habitat, preventing them from being depicted in an illustration together. I'd have prefered mentioning three ocean dwelling creatures within one passage, even if some were birds, some fish, and some ocean dwelling mammals.

I do love picture books that feature seasonal themes or time-of-day themes. I also love books that feature animals.

I have never seen such an annoying arrangement of verses and such a mismatch of words with illustrations in a picture book for young children. For this confusion and annoyance, I grant one star. I dislike it so much that I can't stand to read it to my children and am donating it to my local library.

5-0 out of 5 stars A simple story for young readers with superb illustrations!
This is simply a wonderful book! I truly enjoyed using it while tutoring a fourth grade remedial reader because it was simple, yet beautifully worded and superbly illustrated. Each illustration is a marvelous nature portrait in itself. My fourth grade student (who happens to be very interested in science) savored each lovely portrait, as we talked about the animals and environments depicted in each one. Though the words are few and simple, the book avoids being overly childish. Rather, it respectfully presents the cycle of the day (morning, noon and night) and the beauty of various animals as they act in their natural environments throughout the day. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars What Time Is It?
I enjoyed reading this book to my two young children and was impressed at the ease that it contained in the teaching of Spanish. My kids were able to grasp the language and had no difficulty in learning it. Not only did I enjoy the book they did. Even though it's written on a Pre-school level, I am able to refer to it from time to time and I too am learning the language. I have read other books by this author and will continue to build my library with her books. I am glad to be able to learn Spanish myself, and have my children enjoy learning it to.

5-0 out of 5 stars My son's new interest--Spanish!
Got this book because my wife and I are always on the lookout for answers to our son's questions and his interest in "story-time." I could never have anticipated the spark of interest that this book brought in learning about another language (our son has a buddy next door who speaks Spanish & English). The best books we find are the ones with color and great characters, and this book has both. The ideas are conveyed with fun and the results are very good. We have since picked up several more of the books in this author's series. The books are sturdy, which is good because they are carried everywhere by our son. His buddy next door has borrowed them. Great teaching tool!
