Book Description

Running for their lives, the children of New Israel find a secret place to hide....

Mara and her friends find safety in the dark, wet, and dirty underground passageways of Jerusalem...but not for long! Saul and his men are close on their tail—ready to stone to death anyone who believes in Jesus.

As the new believers crawl through the smelly, winding tunnels in their quest for safety, they get into even more trouble by letting differences between Hebrew and Greek, rich and poor divide them. Will the group split up and face the life-threatening consequences, or will they find enough in common to reach the light at the end of the tunnel?

5-0 out of 5 stars Endearing and Funny
"An Alien in My House" is an endearing and funny tale of a grandson and grandfather adjusting to living together. The boy thinks his grandfather is an alien because of his medical machinary and aging body. The grandfather thinks his grandson is a monster because of his high energy and love of computer games. This universal story of the generations living together touches those of all cultures. It is told with humour and the lyrical prose of Shenaaz Nanji. The illustrations by Chum McLeod are colourful and accessible to people of all backgrounds. "An Alien in my House" is an enjoyable read for parents and kids under ten. The ending is touching and reinforces the value of accepting peoples' differences.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!
When I first saw this in the bookstore my kids couldn't put it down because of all the colorful pictures! And lo and behold the content is just as superb. My son could relate to Ben because of his relationship with his grandfather. A must for any parent interested in creating strong familial links between their children and their parents. ... Book Description

The two Cherokee stories shared in this book are excellent examples of how tales, meant to entertain and educate children from another culture, can transcend time and place without losing either their inherent lesson or ability to delight. "How the Bat Got Its Wings" reminds us that each individual has an important place in society and everyone-including its leaders-should remember this fact. "Young Bear's Lesson", a variation on the maxim Look Before You Leap, tells us that conflicts sometimes remain ongoing at the end of a narrative-a reminder that not every story has a happy ending and not all of the problems in this world are resolved. While we like to be associated with the 'good guy', one's own kind does not always behave well. We sometimes need to question the behavior of our own people and seek to make society better.from the intro. ... Read more

Book Description

Erik & Isabelle Freshman Year at Foresthill High by Kim Wallace introduces two best friends who share their thoughts and feelings with one another as they experience romantic crushes, family drama, growing pains, and personal victories.Sounds like every other teenager, doesn’t it?The clincher is, they’re both gay.

Erik is a studious, well-mannered young man who is forced to hide his homosexuality from his military father and the gay-baiting bullies at school.Every day Erik is alone, facing the pain of pretending to be someone who he is not, until he meets another boy just like himself on the Internet.Isabelle is a strong-willed, out lesbian—the only one at her conservative school—whose parents embrace her sexuality and self-expression.Isabelle’s offbeat sense of humor and unique style attracts the attention of a questioning head-cheerleader.In spite of opposition, they fall in love.Hard.When she experiences the tragedy of her first serious break up, Isabelle nearly self-destructs.

Erik and Isabelle, however, triumph over the forces against them with resilience and relentless humor. In light of the present political debates around gay rights and equality, Erik & Isabelle is a timely and relevant series that will help guide GLBT youth onto a path of empowerment and hope. Most of all, Erik & Isabelle sends every reader the same message: No matter who or what we are, all human beings are seeking the same thing: love, acceptance, and understanding. ... Read more
