4-0 out of 5 stars A conversational piece to read with your toddlers
This is an excellent board book to read with your toddlers, and explain the differences in shapes and sizes. Our family enjoyed looking for other items of similar shapes in our own home, while we sat and read this book together. That became a very enjoyable game for even my older toddler, who was no longer interested in board books. The one reference to "fat" and "thin" will actually make a good time to discuss how some words can be hurtful to others, and how to avoid them. My toddler surprised me with her sensitivity and ability to understand this complex matter.

3-0 out of 5 stars Thomas the Tank Engine Shapes and Sizes
While a cute little board book, this is one of the rare Thomas books that parents may want to approach with caution. It is a fun book for illustrating the comparative shapes and sizes of objects like tank engines and suitcases, but a reference to Sir Topham Hatt as 'fat' might put some adults and children off. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Beautifully illustrated
This is another Thomas book beautifully illustrated by Tommy Stubbs. I much prefer these Thomas books to the "originals". Both my 3 year old and 4 1/2 year old enjoy this book very much. It's an engaging story with good moral lessions (Thomas misbehaves, but learns from his mistakes).

3-0 out of 5 stars Too Wordy!
My 3 year old son is a huge Thomas fan, but tends to get a bit distracted by two things about this book. One is it's "wordiness" - there's a lot of language on each page, and he gets bored and want to flip ahead, while I'm trying to finish. The other is the odd "Americanization" of the characters, in the illustrations - the people look like they're in Kansas, not England! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful children's adventure story
A very well illustrated and written narrative of a train ride into the wilderness of Alaska. I am a collector of Alaskana books and was happy to add this to my extensive collection. The author writes of things that children are intersted in: trains, adventure, and the last frontier. Take a ride along the worlds most remote rails from the sprawling metropolis of Anchorage to the remote wilds which fervidly encroach upon its front door. Even if you are not a fan of Alaskana this book will interest all train aficionados, wilderness fans, and watercolor devotees. Rustle up your adventure gear and grab your conductors cap this ride's destination is pure delightful entertainment.

4-0 out of 5 stars Interactive and Informative
I found this book at a used book store and my son (3 years old) immediately liked it. The book features full color and highly detailed drawings of trains. What sets it apart from other introductory books about trains are the clear acetate overlays between most of the pages. These plastic pages are printed with designs that are visible on both sides and that add to the printed images on the other pages. The overlays also cover up text on the upcoming page so that more information and pictures are revealed when the child lifts them up. The book has a lot of the appeal of a lift-the-flap book, but is much more durable. It has a spiral binding that is enclosed inside a hardback cover, so the pages lie flat.

The text of the book is short and easy to read aloud. Much of the information is contained in captions for the images, many of which are objects shown against a white background in the style that is fashionable these days. The main text of the book is printed in a larger font than the labels and captions, so you can choose to read only the basic information aloud, or add more detail as a child shows interest. The text is engaging in that it asks questions and then reveals the answers so that children have a chance to speculate a bit.

Children old enough to read this book themselves may be too old for the simplistic information unless this is truly their first introduction to trains. My only gripe about the text is that some information is printed against a colored background and is hard to read. Other times, the text is arranged to hide behind an acetate overlay, and is oddly spaced.

This book begins by talking about trains in the United States, but quickly moves to international trains and provides a fairly balanced worldwide view (even a Peruvian train is shown). The final pages show "trains" of amusement park rides, but there is a picture of a skeleton inside a haunted house type ride that might frighten the preschoolers or toddlers. Use your judgement. My rather trepid 3 year old doesn't mind.

5-0 out of 5 stars For Little Hands
This book is wonderful. My 11 month old son received it as a party favor. This is the only book he actually hands to us to read...and it has to be read several times. I never leave home without it. I also bought a couple of more copies for the grandparents houses. Inexpensive and perfect for little hands!

5-0 out of 5 stars Adorable!
I bought this for my son when he was 8 mos. old. He loved the pictures and different colors. He is now 12 mos and entertains himself by flipping through the pages in search of the elephants. This is a small book, so it's perfect for little hands. Don't expect a great learning experience from it, but it does cover basic colors and a few objects related to the train (freight car, caboose) and has cute clowns in every color, but someday my son will probably ask why the train carries green balloons.... ... 2-0 out of 5 stars If my son didn't really like it, I'd give it 0 stars
I have to agree with the previous reviewer who said this book is disjointed. I cringe everytime I read it to my son (2 yrs). He likes it so we read it most nights before bed.

We've never seen the movie (where presumably the gaps, which account for ~50% of the book, are filled in). But, having read the book, I never want to see the movie.

Buy this book only if you want to suffer through countless nights reading about how Mr. Conductor gets thrown from Diesel 10's claw to the base of a windmill where there just happens to be a clue to the source of the gold dust. And that's about as much context as the book itself gives you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Coloring Book: For Girls and Boys
My son and daughter went to see the movie. This coloring book gave them a chance to remember and retell the movies' events. They were so excited about the book, I had to order another one!

2-0 out of 5 stars Disjointed jumble of plot points
This book is a telegraphic, disjointed list of things that happen in the movie. There is no real narrative to speak of. I got the book for my 3-year-old before we saw the movie, and until then, it made no sense. Now, it is useful as a way of warding off having to go see that dreadfully acted movie again. As much as my son loves (and I appreciate) Thomas the Tank Engine, this book does a disservice to the characters and themes of the original series. The other two movie-based softcover books (one about Diesel 10 and one about Lady) are somewhat better -- they don't have the lessons of the original series, but at least they make some sense on their own.

1-0 out of 5 stars Big disappointment
Incredibly disappointing - not anywhere near the quaint stories written by the Rev. Awdry and son. This story has so many possibilities, yet never lives up to its potential.

5-0 out of 5 stars Parents Too!
Well, this book is great for parents to read to their child. It has a plot based on the movie. It's a great book that parents can enjoy, too.I think Thomas The Tank Engine was meant to be made because all of the family can enjoy this series.I rate this as an excellent book that has 5 stars. ... When the train passes Grandpa's house, Gus is so excited that he runs outside to wave at the cars. He forgets all about Grandpa's dog, and Skipper escapes through the open gate. It takes Grandpa to get him back. Then, when Grandpa decides to look for Daddy's old toy train, Gus leaps into the act, and they are so absorbed that they both forget Skipper. Together, they find him. Later, Gus and Grandpa plan to ride a real train. But when they get on, they realize that they're in trouble-- Grandpa has forgotten where he put the tickets (but not for long).
