5-0 out of 5 stars Very popular with my son
My son (23 mons) really likes this book. Generally I can tell how much he likes a book based on the number of times he would like me to read it. This one rates a six and then I hide it and point something else out.

For the reading parent, it is nice as the text is just repititive enough to please the kids without driving you crazy. The length is also quite nice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun train ride full of animals and their sounds
This is one of my (19 month old) daughter's favorite stories. She loves filling in the animal sounds, dog barking, donkey hee-hawing, etc. I got it from the library, she likes it so much, I just bought a copy. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars wonderful version of classic story
We received this book as a gift and my preschooler loves it. The story is told with lively songs, as opposed to just someone reading the story and telling you when to turn the page. Book Description

Waiting for the train music in the station bucket drums steel guitars the beat and the wait and the rumble-growl a light in the darka floating star squeak and squeal and screech to the stop

My Subway Ride whisks you through the vivid sounds, sights, and rhythms of the heart of New York City's subway and all the great stops along the way. From the "pitch, smack, home run!" of Yankee Stadium, to the rattle of the Cyclone and the sticky cotton candy on Coney Island, to the pulse of the crowd in Times Square, this book immerses you in the movement of the city. The pulse and beat of the subway train runs throughout the text, and the colorful and bold illustrations give the graphic sense of the subway, from fading train lights, to mosaic tile walls, to colorful graffiti, to a sea of faces. Join the subway station musicians who sing of the train's sound and rhythm as "a pulse, the pulse/a heartbeat/ a jazz riff/ a constant sea/ a mama's belly/ whisking us home."

Paul DuBois Jacobs and Jennifer Swender are a husband-and-wife team living in Brooklyn, New York. Paul has coauthored three books with musician Pete Seeger: Pete Seeger's Storytelling Book, Abiyoyo Returns, and Some Friends to Feed: The Story of Stone Soup. 5-0 out of 5 stars Just Lovely for Train Lovers
When my 3-yr old takes an interest in something, it usually becomes an all-out obsession: dinosaurs, construction vehicles, space and so it continues with Thomas the Tank Engine. We've read other books and rented videos, but these books (there are four in this series) are his beloved. The stories are simple and plentiful with a bit of a moral to them, without being pretentious or zealous. The writing style is delightful: adult enough not to bore the reader and yet perfectly understandable for the listener (assuming it's a child!). The pictures are clear but not movie or television tie-ins - it makes them more lovable! The books are small and my son loves to stack them and carry them around with him.

If your child loves Thomas and you're tired of media tie-ins, these books are for you!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Classic
This book is a hit with my three-and-a-half-year old. Not only are the four stories interesting enough to hold his attention, but the ample illustrations are charming. Also, the relatively small size of the book makes it perfect for small hands to hold when the child "reads" it to himself. The stories are sweet without being cloying. The language is fairly sophisticated (in other words, the book doesn't talk down to kids, which is great), but accessible. The stories have kind of an old-fashioned feel, -- after all, we are talking about steam engines -- but their upbeat messages are just as relevant for kids today. For instance, Thomas learns how to work with others and how NOT to "judge a book by its cover". This book will probably be a favorite in our house for some years to come! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Fun for Thomas fans!
My 2 1/2-year old son fell in love with this book. The flaps pull out not once, but twice on each page to reveal more of the story. Colorful, sturdy pages (but not cardboard). Not a good choice for those under two, in my opinion, simply because of the delicate nature of the flaps. My son destroyed almost every book he got his hands on as a young toddeler, but by 2 1/2 he was able to handle this book without incident. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars James the Really Useful Red Engine
James, who crashed in the last story of Thomas the tank engine, settles down and becomes a very useful engine. He has 4 stories all to his self, James and the Top-hat, James and the Bootlace, Troublesome trucks and James and the Express. In the first story, he and Edward double head a passenger train in which James gets too excited for his own good at the big station and ruins Sir Topham Hatt's Top Hat. Then, he takes some coaches out after being given into trouble by Sir Topham Hatt, who threatens to take away his red coat and have him painted blue. He bangs the coaches so badly that he causes a leak in the pipe which is repaired by, of all things, a passenger's bootlace. He is sent to the shed in disgrace and left there to think about what he's done. But one day, Sir Topham Hatt comes to see him and tells him to pull some trucks for him and in the end keeps his red coat. In the last story, after being teased by Gordon, he pulls the Express and gives the big engine a showing up by proving that he is not the only engine who can pull the Express after all. ...
