Book Description

Nowadays it's no big deal or a girl to travel seventy-five miles. But when Charlotte May Pierstorff wanted to cross seventy-five miles of Idaho mountains to see her grandma in 1914, it was a very big deal indeed. There was no highway except the railroad, and a train ticket would have cost her parents a full day's pay.

Here is the true story of how May got to visit her grandma, thanks to her won spunk, her father's ingenuity, and the U.S. mail.

4-0 out of 5 stars Mailing May - clever, creative, great pictures.
I love Ted Rand's pictures. I'm trying to make a collection of books with his art works, but there are many. Mailing May is one I hadn't read and was delighted. I saw Ted Rand at work during one of the workshops for Children's Writers of the Northwest. He's pleasant as well as talented. I would recommend this book to those who love little children's stories with substance as well as art work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice story, perfect drawings, great book
I chose this book to read to a group of children, ages 2 to 11. They all sat, listening, interested, and loved it! The story is so nice and the drawings are perfect. I think a child doesn't have to "believe it" to believe in the passion behind it. They get it. It was great.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good story...
This is a touching story of a little girl who can't afford to visit her grandparents. It's set in the early 1900's. Children will learn a little history. They'll enjoy the family's solution to their problem. This is a lovely story. I'm afraid, however, that I enjoyed it a bit more than my children. From their 1990's perspective, the story was a little hard to believe. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Young people need modern heroes - Robert Ballard is real.
Robert Ballard is one of the few genuine adventurer - hero models available to young people of the 21st Century. He is is incapable of being boring. He's somehow interesting even when he's talking about a can of paint. He has manifold unquestioned achievements, both scientific and spectacular in the public eye. His flair for photography and for commissioning or selecting exciting paintings of underwater scenes is unparalleled. His feeling for developing memorable themes, in this case lost ships, is gripping for both adults who allow their imaginations to seized by large events effectively told, as well as children.

At times one hears unjustified carping from scientists at Ballard's role as a popularizer. At others, not unreasonable arguments are raised that some of his books don't offer enough credit to others. I have known Ballard from the time of his PhD dissertation at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and onwards. I prefer to interpret Ballard's telling of major stories with simplifications as part of his ability to reach and affect large audiences, including young people who have become one of his major targets and goals in later life. Kids simply don't have the life experience and maturity to weigh all nuances of complex phenomena like scientific and exploration discovery.

Ballard has made extraordinary efforts with his Jason outreach programs to enliven science education for school children, facilitating realtime "exploration" opportunities to hundreds of thousands of young people. Ballard has a sense of personal ethics (refreshing in a "me" generation), being reluctant, for example, to allow souvenirs to be retrieved from the Titanic and other wrecks. Even though one can argue scientific and other value for such retrieval, I attribute to him sense of purpose and principle along with other unusual qualities as a person and author.

5-0 out of 5 stars A look at lost liners you never even knew about
I accidentally ordered this children's book from my son's school book fair, but I really love it. I wanted the book Lost Liners also by Bob Ballard. The paintings in Ghost Liners are wonderful and the narrative is interesting and also sad at times. I didn't even know about many of the other sea disasters. My son did read the book, but I'm the one who enjoyed it the most. The haunting illustrations are, themselves, worth the price of the book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good Little Book
This was a pretty good little book for the money. However, it was largely a slimmed-down version of Lost Liners, which I highly recommend. Some new pictures were featured, but much of it was rehash.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great pictures and text
Awesome pictures! Ken Marschall did a wonderful job with the illustrations, and the photographs were nice, too. The text explained clealy what had happened to each ship, and the controversy about some of them. I really learned something from this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT!!!!
I would recommend this book to anyone who likes studing TITANIC, ANDREA DORIA, LUSITANIA, THE EMPRESS OF IRELAND, OR MY PERSONAL FAVORITE, BRITTANIC. I have studyed these ships most of my life and have found this is the book the best. Dr. Ballard gives a hands on look at these ships with actual photos and paintings by the well know artist, Ken Marshall. If you are in to TITANIC and have read this book, I would recomend that you purchace TITANIC: AN ILLUSTRATED HISTORY by Don Lynch for the most complete info and photos ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for toddlers
My daughter, now 23 months, has loved this book since she was 14 months old. This book has made her even more fascinated with airplanes. When she sees an airplane she always points it out and asks to go on an airplane. She asks for us to read this book daily (my husband and I have it memorized). The illustrations are wonderfully bright in color. The text is simple but written well for young children to understand the pictures. This is one book I don't mind reading everyday!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun, fun, fun...
I have a two year old son, and he loves this book. The pictures are great, the descriptions are easy for him to understand, and are short enough to hold his attention. All of Byron Barton's books are great, but this one is his fave rave!!!!!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for airport and airplane fans
This time around Barton tackles a day in the life of a passenger plane traveler. We start out with passengers arriving at the airport and go through all the various activities that take place through take off. What happens to the luggage, getting the plane ready for take off, etc. are covered. A cross-section of a jet plane shows the various parts including toilet (which children think is hilarious) and also shows staff working to clean the plane before the passengers board.

This would be a great book to read to a child who is preparing to travel by airplane. It would be great preparation to understand all that goes into preparing the plane, what is happening as the people are waiting to board, etc. It would also be a great book to take on the flight as entertainment, especially since it is a thin paperback and lightweight.

Lots of people are in the airport and are of all ages and races.

Barton also has a board book about planes which depicts different kinds of airplanes, titled "Planes". "Airport" focuses just on jet passenger airplanes and the airport itself. If you enjoy this book I recommend Barton's other books as well.

My baby loves this book, he must love the illustrations. My four year old loves the book for the content. We are frequent airplane travelers and we have made air travel an adventure, always discussing all that goes on and intentionally making it a real fun experience. It has been successful so far because we don't experience air travel stress with either of our children. Both look at a trip to the airport as an adventure in and of itself. This book gives us more opportunities to discuss flying when we are at home, in between trips.

This is the only children's book I have ever seen that discusses airports and what goes on there.

Great, a must have!

4-0 out of 5 stars a gentle introduction to the airport for young children
This book is a good introduction to the sequence of events a child can expect to see when they take an airplane flight. The storyline, such as it is, unobtrusively follows a young boy and his family through the process -- arriving at the airport in a bus, standing in the ticket line, sitting in the waiting area, boarding the plane and finding your seat, and getting buckled in. There are also picture showing the crew preparing the airplane, the control tower okaying the plane for takeoff, the pilot and crew in the cockpit, and the jet taking off. There is a very nice cross-section showing the jet's fuselage, cargo hold, etc. Each picture is a brightly colored two-page spread, and my two-year old enjoys this book.

My quibbles are small. It would have been nice to see some more children in the pictures; and in one scene we see the little boy buckling up in a window seat on the lefthand side of the plane, but on takeoff we see him look ing out a window on the righthand side. A small enough mistake, but what if a child notices this and begins to worry that airplanes do not obey the laws of physics or logic? Will you be prepared to advance explanations that will not confuse?

Seriously, it's a nice book that should inform small children, and even help them when they first experience an airport.

5-0 out of 5 stars My son's favorite book
My 2 1/2 year old son loved this book so much when we checked it out at the library, that I had to buy him his own copy. The text is simple and easy for him to understand and the pictures are bright and simple, yet complete and accurate in their representation of a real airport experience. He has fun going through the book over and over again looking for new things, asking me what they are: the security checkpoint, the fuel truck, the jetbridge, the overhead luggage bins, the rolling stairs, the mechanics checking the airplane's engines. He has logged several hours of airtime traveling with our family, but is still fascinated with the airport every time he picks up this book. ... Read more

We had to purchase another copy because our 2 1/2 year old son has read and played with the first copy so much he has destroyed it. Yet it is still his favorite. It is a great book for little boys. The pictures are terrific. He now knows his construction equipment when we are out and about.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bright, clean photos w/ wrap around text, great concept!
This is my son's all time favorite book, it goes everywhere with us! I do not need to see the text as I read, since I now know it by heart. My son loves the shape, and has been know to take a bite every once in a while. This is just a great book to read to your child, fun, easy to understand, and lots of things to point out on the way. 5-0 out of 5 stars My son's favorite book
This book is great - (...)when I read it aloud, it's kind of fun for adults to read, too. Out of all the books we have, I'd say this book is one of the top 2 my son wants to have read over and over. When we're not reading it, he flips through it on his own and looks at the clearly drawn, colorful, interesting pictures, which have just enough detail without being too complicated. The depictions of different kinds of trains are fairly accurate, too. And the book is a good length - not just a few pages, like some board books, but not so long he loses interest.

5-0 out of 5 stars A can't lose book for a toddler boy!
My son got this book when he was 18 months old and he LOVES it! It is simple enough to keep his attention and not bore him with too many words. The pictures are perfect. I would ask questions about what he saw in the picture and he would point things out. We counted how many houses, how many trees, how many train cars. We noticed that all the people at the train station were wearing hats, and on the train they were not. I know this book by heart now and I'm not sick of it. My son is now 2 and 1/2 and he still wants to read this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mom of a train lover
My son is 2 1/2 we first discovered Barton's "Trucks" book from our local library. My son loved it to pieces and the librarians were kind enough to let us buy it. I have had to make repairs to the book often as it has been such a prized possession. My son is now very into trains. All his toys are now lined up around the house and have become "choo choo's." I was so excited to find out the same person who wrote and illustrated the "Trucks" book has a book on trains. We got it for my son yesterday. His dad had to read it for him 5 times in a row last night. It was misplaced when it was time for a bedtime story and my son cried. He found it again this morning and has hardly put it down since. It is an instant favorite.

5-0 out of 5 stars A colorful book for little train fans
My son is a train fanatic. We bought this book for him when he was a year old. He wanted it read to him constantly and before too long, we all knew it by heart! The book has fallen apart after 4 years of constant reading, carrying and as a bedtime companion. We would recommend Trains to anyone who has a child interested in these huge machines! We are going to get another copy of the book for our youngest son.

5-0 out of 5 stars Where's my train book?!
I gave this book to my 3 year old son shortly before he and my husband were taking a train trip. I thought he would enjoy it since he loves trains so much, but I didn't realize that he would become completely attached to it! He hasn't let this book out of his sight and wants us to read it to him all the time. Since he has memorized the words, he even reads it to himself. Great book for a pre-schooler who is fascinated with trains or for a child who will be taking a trip on a train! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Terrific pictures, concise mini history of aviation.
This book covers aviation from it's earliest beginnings. There are many books on this subject, but this one stands out.

The book is amazingly concise, and yet it covers all of the important developments in aviation. My experience as a lifelong aviation enthusiast and private pilot makes me a good judge of this material. This book is intended for kids, but it has something even and old "fly boy" like me can enjoy.

The pictures in this book are striking in detail. Along with many other fantastic pictures, this book has the finest picture of a Bleriot XI that I have ever seen. The detail is unparalleled.

This is a book intended for children, but anyone would learn a great deal from it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice large illustrations of a variety of big trucks
I picked up this book as an impulse buy "for my daughter." She seems to enjoy it a lot because of the large, colorful pictures of trucks -- including a mobile home toter, a giant dump truck, trial truck, and a concept truck.

Each picture is well captioned with interesting side notes. For example, the book points out the concrete truck's drum rotates both directions, one to mix the concrete (and prevent it from setting) and the other to pour the mixture out.

It's one of her favorites and she's memorized all of the names (listening to a 24 month old say "mobile home toter" is pretty funny). As she gets older, she'll have more appreciation for the footnotes.

I also appreciate how the book displays trucks from different locales. For example, we don't see any "Road Trains" or "Trial Trucks" in the 'States. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Truck, Trucks and more Trucks!!
I LOVE THIS BOOK! I bought this book for my 2 yr old son for a stocking stuffer this past Christmas. I didn't realize I would love it so much. It is full of trucks of all types, and it also has the correct name of each one. My son loves trucks but called them all room rooms, as in the noise. Well with this book he now calls them by name. A tractors is now a tractor and not a room room!! I am so excited. I can't wait to buy the whole collect of "My First Books"! I really feel it will help my son learn the correct names for the objects he sees everyday.

5-0 out of 5 stars Our twin boys love this book.
I stopped by here today to buy another copy of this book because our twin boys (23 months) fight over this book. We have a lot of books, but this is by far their favorite. They take it with them to the table, in the car and to bed. They love to say the names of the trucks. The book has pictures and names of the trucks. It really is a good book for kids who love big trucks.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Series of Books
I cannot say enough about how good this series of books is. We have all the titles that are avaiable in Australia and they are the most well-read books in our Children's library.

They are the perfect-sized books for your little one and a great way to get them interested in learning to love books. The pages are strong and sturdy and will take any amount of page turning your little one can dish out.

The best thing about these books is the wonderful photography of each item - clearly labeled with it's name. As you read this book over and over to your child it won't be long before they are the ones pointing to the picture and telling you what it is.

I've read this series of books (over and over)to my children since they were about 6 months old. The eldest (now 4 and a half) still flicks through the books and has started to point things out and say the words to her little brother.

Highly recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars Trains,Trains,Trains
I checked this book out at the library, and now have to purchase it for a nephew who loves trains. It is a great book that details the history of trains, but adds in a story (a family with many generations working on the trains) to keep the interest of children. Beautiful illustrations with a cat on every page my kids had to find. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Great & Awesome book BUT.........
My son loves this book to no end!!! However, I was disturbed to see advertising for cigarettes on one of the trains pictured. I just don't think that is appropriate for a children's book to have that and would have preferred either that picture being left out or finding another train w/o that advertising on it. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Best Thomas books - particularly for young kids
My older son is a huge Thomas fan, and had me read him "Thomas the Tank Engine's Big Yellow Treasury" every night for weeks when I bought it. My second son (2 years old) also now adores this book and never tires of the story. Unlike some of the "classic" stories, these are very pleasant and great for small children, as well as for early readers. The books also have bigger and brighter illustrations than many Thomas books, and with 3 stories in one book you get good value. If you have kids between 18 months and 7 or 8 years old, this book is a winner (all of this applies equally to the Big Blue Treasury - the two favorites out of the 30 plus Thomas books the boys have).

4-0 out of 5 stars Pleasant, noncontroversial and fun.
My 3 year old boy likes this book quite a bit. He likes to have all three stories read to him before he goes to sleep each night. The stories are pleasant enough and the illustrations are colorful. I find the book a little bland but the noncontroversial nature of the characters (there's none of the meanness that characterizes some of the Thomas characters) and the simple storylines makes for good bedtime reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars My 3 Year Old LOVES it!
My boy loves Thomas, and the two "big treasury" books are now an indispensible part of our bedtime reading. We have many Thomas books, but these just fascinate him - they are a bit more complete as stories (i.e. beginning, middle, end) than some of the other Thomas books, and comforting in that there's no nastiness, as in some of the early Thomas books (no angry trains, derailing tricks, etc.) I recommend these books highly. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great book for teaching GOOD manners...
I agree wholeheartedly with the reviews that say "Bad Manners" review is shortsighted to say the least. If you want to engage in passive parenting and not use this book in any interactive and instructive way, then I suppose it's not the best choice. Why? Duck is like many people we meet in the world, not a bad Duck, just a little lacking in the social graces and a tad self-absorbed. Fortunately, he has good friends that model the good stuff and help him with his quandry. His story is told in a fun and engaging way with wonderful rhymes and gorgeous illustrations. It's a great book for engaging youngsters in discussions about things like friendship, patience, problem-solving and gratitude...in a completely age-appropriate way. And it's a fun ride, to boot.

Bad book? Not at all. Perhaps for someone who wants a book to do her parenting for her. But most will find it a treasure. Personally, I find it refreshing that this book teaches little lessons without explicitly telling you what those lessons are. It means I get to talk with my child--and that's what "quality time" is all about! BUY IT!

5-0 out of 5 stars Please ignore "Bad Manners" below
I am a volunteer reader for the Denver Public Library and I recently read this book to a group of preschool children. It's a fun book! This rhyming and repetition patterns of the text are characteristic of some of the finest books for young people. As far as the content of the story, yes, Duck is a character of suspect temperament, but I thought the author made that clear (Duck is an antihero). You are not expected to cheer for him. Besides as the reader, you should point out Duck's flaws to your listeners (it's your "moral" obligation). Ask your son/daughter how he/she would feel if someone treated him/her the way Duck treats his "friends". I spent time with my listeners and asked them about whether Duck was being nice to the other characters in the story and emphasized the importance of treating people well....check out the book for yourself at a library. ...

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun For All
Every day I read to my daughter--often the same story many times in a row, which can get tedious. However, this book is fun for both of us. She loves to listen to it and I enjoy the rhythm and fun rhymes even after the fourth time. And we both love the pictures. Some readers feel it lacks moral values; I don't agree--but then I don't limit my storyreading to simply the words on the page. (Even the bible sometimes needs a little explaining.)

5-0 out of 5 stars We love the duck books!
My son absolutely loves this book and so do I!! Poor duck is always getting into trouble and dragging his friends along with him (literally)! This time his truck is stuck in the muck. All the duck books are great to read over and over again, and they have great pictures as well. ( Fix it Duck is a must have along with this ).

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Illustrations
I have to admit, I purchased this book for my nephew because of the great illustrations. The story is short, sweet and simple, and the pages are fun to look at. My only complaint is that it doesn't make much sense for a book geared towards very young children to come with a dust jacket. These kind of books need to be pretty much indestructable! ...
