Author and illustrator Julie Grist's Flying: Just Plane Fun is a delightful picture book about how planes stay up in the air, the basics of flying, and what it's like to be a pilot or co-pilot. An adventurous read which is most especially recommended for young people with a budding interest in aircraft, aviation, and the mechanics and physics thereof, Flying: Just Plane Fun is an original and enthusiastically recommended addition for family, school, and community library collections.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!
My whole family loves these books, and Amelia Earhart is my daughter's current favorite. We own about seven of the books in this series, and each one is as good as the next. We are planning to collect the whole series. They are a second or third grade reading level but the information is presented clearly enough that younger kids can grasp the essentials. At the same time, there is enough substance that older kids have plenty to think about. Adults can learn something too! I recommend this book, and the whole series, very highly.

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT BOOK!
Wonderful illustrations! Names everything! Perfect addition to Master and Commander fans!

4-0 out of 5 stars Would be 5 stars, but...
I only wish it was longer. As it is the 64 pages is packed with info, but I still held back my rating to 4 stars.

This is a great book for the kids. DK always seems to do a nice job of presenting a lot of information in a fun way, and this book is no exception. It covers historical information on the different types of ships from the "first boats" to "ships of the line" of the 18th and 19th century. Also the "anatomy" of a ship, how a wooden and iron ship is built, etc. One thing I really enjoyed about this book is that it explains the basic concepts of navigation, piloting, and nautical charts. My family has a long history of sailing, and I really treasure this book as a fun way to introduce my children to learning more about the history and craft of sailing. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Really cute idea...
This is a cute book. There are 4 pages of stickers. If you remove the cover from the inside pages, you can use the scene on it with the stickers to create various train scenes...and then change them as desired.

However, my 3 year old did not see using it that way - he would rather put the stickers in his own sticker book, so that particular concept failed. But the stickers are nice, and the concept is still cute. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Tootle
As a child I loved trains. Tootle appealed to me because of the fantasy element -- a train being able to leave the tracks to smell the flowers! The moral of the story is teach children responsibility and the importance of following instructions but that's not what I took away from it when I was a toddler.

4-0 out of 5 stars MIDWEST BOOK REVIEW
This is an adorable story about a baby locomotive who went to the village of Lower Trainswitch to learn to be a big locomotive.
They have lessons in many classes to learn whistle blowing, stopping for a red flag waving and puffing loudly, just to name a few. However, the most important lesson to learn was staying on the rails no matter what.

Tootle could never seem to do this. He always wanted to go and wonder in the meadow and chase birds or butterfly's.
Tootle had to be taught a lesson.

This little book teaches children in a fun way how important it is to follow directions.
My granddaughter and I enjoyed this read.
The illustrations were colorful and the book was enjoyable for her to look at.
Nice job!

4-0 out of 5 stars growing up includes being responsible
being read this book as a child was simple fun, and went along with my parents encouraging me to be responsible.
as a parent I wanted my kids to realize that others were hurt by our unthinking selfishness.
It seems now that I'm older that the lesson, of doing only what WE want can spill the cargo of our family that we carry through life with us, is still valid.
That everyone in town is rooting for me to do what is right, and cheers when I'm successful, is what I wish to believe.

3-0 out of 5 stars Old but not classic
Typical of many stories of its era, this 1950s book has a simple plot and wordy writing style. The bright, fanciful llustrations are one of its better points, although they are a little overdone.

This book incorporates a certain kind of hyperbole I have always found distressing in its involvement of the "mayor himself" and the efforts of all of the townspeople in Lower Trainswitch. The real world doesn't stand on its head like that for much of anyone. Again this is an artifact of the era.

Unlike other reviewers, I don't find much symbolism of conformance in the "staying on the rails no matter what" mantra of the story.

My children enjoy this story but it is not one of their favorites.

5-0 out of 5 stars I LOVE IT!!!
I think "Tootle" is a very morally acceptable book. I interpret it as encouragement to stay on the right track. As a Christian, that means staying on "the road less traveled". It is very encouraging to me and for my son(4). I will read it to him until (and probably after) he feels he's outgrown it. I especially loved the very end where Tootle, with tears in his eyes, realizes that he should be on the track, where his instructor is waving a green flag. You hear the excitement in his voice when he says "Oh. This is the place for me." and all the townspeople shout "Hurray!" and throw up their arms in excitement.
I will always treasure this book! Thank you Gertrude Crampton!!!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Marvelous !!
I'm rekindling my fascination with steam locomotives again. I had read this book about 10 years ago and came across it again on my bookshelf. I'm re-reading it with the same joy/fascination I did the 1st time ! (and I'm no kid at 42 years old - would be nice to have a son to share it with!!) I'm glad I haven't lost that child-like wonder at these huge machines of yesteryear. I feel like I'm the young apprentice in the book, ravenously learning the complexicities of designing and building one of the magnificent monsters !

Can't recommend it highly enough for steam loco-fans of all ages !!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Fascinating Look at a Magnificent Machine
David Weitzman has a love of technology and history. This can be demonstrated by observing the names of books he authored, including titles ranging from "Traces of the Past: A Field Guide to Industrial Archaeology" to "Underfoot: An Everyday Guide to Exploring the American Past." This fortuitous blend of history and technology is the underlying theme of this book.

For those of you who may be expecting a typical 'picture book' about a steam locomotive, this book will definitely come as a surprise. Although well illustrated, there are no photographs. This omission is more than compensated for by the line drawings that are precise and informative. The text is educational and interesting; the text and the line drawings compement each other very nicely. The combination is such that the reader is virtually transported by osmosis back to the year 1925 and to the dark and dingy backshops of the Lima Locomotive Works of Lima, Ohio, in order to not only personally witness but to actually physically participate in the birth of this magnificent machine, the first 'Super Power' steam locomotive ever.

Another pleasant surprise in this work is the interaction of man and machine, the creator and the fruit of his labor. Too many books about the locomotive ignore the human role; here the combination of man and machine is a symbiotic relationship.

This book is both easy to read and educational, and it is designed to appeal to anyone in age from beginning high-schooler to adult. Anyone possessing an interest in the mechanical world should obtain a copy of this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read book for anyone who loves trains or technology
My 10 year old son and I read this book together and loved it. We are both train and locomotives fans but despite what we knew we both learned more. This book is expecially good for kids since it is told through the eyes of an 18 year old boy, but is equally interesting for adults.

5-0 out of 5 stars You learn more from this great book than history.
This book is amazing on so many levels. It teaches you how trains are designed and built, how math is applicable in the real world, how people get along, how some people are better suited to different, but equally important jobs, engineering, give and take (compromise). But it doesn't quite teach you, it intigrates these lessons in the oral history it is presenting. Superpower could be about anything and you would still learn SO much about life. I recommend this book to anyone, any age. It will change the life of a boy though, guaranteed. It will inspire him to study more at the very least.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book.

4-0 out of 5 stars A cute book for your fire engine lover.
My 3 year old daughter and I really enjoy this book and the others in this series. My daughter loves fire engines and this book is informative as well as fun. The story begins with the fire engines waiting at the fire house. The alarm bell sounds and the crew rushes off to fight a fire. As the story continues everything the fire crew does is explained in easy to understand terms. I really liked the expanation of how the water is pulled from the ground through the fire hydrant to fight the fire. After the resident of the house is rescued and the fire is extinguished, the crew goes back the fire house to clean up, take a break, and await the next fire. The illustrations in this book are just okay. The animals that make up the fire crew look a little strange to me but my daughter was able to identify what they were (bird, mouse, rabbit). The best part of this book is the informative rhymes that make up the story. Not too much information for a tired mom like me to read at night. My daughter and I really like the the last page of the book that lists pictures of fire engine parts and equipment and their names. Thanks to this book my daughter knows new words like water tank and pump and what they do. My daughter asks me to read this book often and it has become a favorite. If your child is really into fire engines and books about them check out the book Dot the Fire Dog. It's another one we really enjoy.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for 2-3 year olds
We checked this book out of the library and my 2.75 year oldloves it. The sentences are too complicated for him, but he likes thepictures and the detailed explanation of the firefighter's equipment on the last page.

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy the whole series!
If you have a train-loving tot like I do, you will be thrilled by these books and trains. My 3.5 yo has been Thomas the Tank crazy since before he was two. He got his first Railway Adventure book, The Torpedo Run, last Christmas when he was 2.5. That is the 3rd book in the series, so we have bought the other two since.

The series starts with the storey of Tuck and Billy (girl) at their home in San Luis Obisbo, CA. The Daylight Limited goes by their house daily, and the whole family stops what they are doing to watch it go by. Tuck dreams up an idea for a train car, and the Holden family enters it into "The invention of tomorrow" contest in the 1939 World Fair. This starts the adventure that has Tuck and Billy riding on the Daylight Limited, the President Washington, and finally, the Torpedo.

The trains all existed, and there are pictures of the actual engines. The text is much more than I normally read for my 3.5 yo, but he has been captivated since he was 2.5. Now, he has started asking me questions, and these books have really grown with him.

In addition, Learning curve with Lionel has created toy replicas of the engines that run on batteries and are compatible with the TTT or Brio track and trains. We have all 3 engines.

5-0 out of 5 stars appeals to all ages

4-0 out of 5 stars An outstanding book . . .
. . . that suffers only in comparison to its predecessor, I Stink (about a garbage truck). Buy that one first, then try this one, which is rich in illustration and story line but not as engaging or complex in attitude as I Stink.

Book Description

"Climb aboard and ride the point!"

Step back in time to Ruby's rail-yard hash house and put on the nosebag with the boss hogger. He'll tell you he likes his eggs with headlights, but if you want scrambled, just order wreck on the main line. Follow him as he and his ashcat warm up engine number 417 at the roundhouse, give her a drink at the water tower, and then hitch her up to a jigger. Then jingle the brass and ride the point. Soon the rods will be flashing, because now you're railroading!

Rhythmic text and busy, detail-filled pictures make learning train lingo loads of fun in this picture book that transports readers back to the heyday of steam locomotion.
