2-0 out of 5 stars Bob's Boring Episode Synopses
I'm not familiar enough with the series to know for sure, but these stories sound a lot like summaries of BTB episodes to me. The writing is bland, and feels like one must trudge to the end of each story. I guess this book is innocuous enough, but lacks the imaginative language that would make a child want to read it for himself/herself. Can we endure it? Yes, we can. But, hey! Isn't that a Dr. Seuss book next to it on the shelf! Let's read that one instead tonight...

5-0 out of 5 stars I have always loved this book
I have been a Titanic Lover for life. I first read this book when I was 6 (I am 14 now) it is a great book if you are looking to start studying the Titanic or if you just want to know the more basic facts about her and her finding. But if you are really deep into the studies of her already then I would get "The Discovery of the Titanic". but there are many, many other great books on her (I should know I have enough to start my own Titanic bookstore ;). For the beginning Titanic studier this is the best book you can buy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous for children and their parents!
This book is a great summary of the sinking and discovery of the Titanic. My 6 year old loved it as did his parents! I recommend this book highly.

5-0 out of 5 stars A fabulous read
I first read this book almost 15 years ago, at age 5 : I loved it, and read it uncountable times. Today it is still just as fascinating. Beautifully illustrated and clearly written, it was the first of many Ballard books that I read. I would also recommend the Discovery of the Bismark and The Wreck of the Isis, just as interesting but less well known. A great way to start reading about the great ships of the past.

5-0 out of 5 stars Read about the Hole thing from the Beginning
Goes behind the Titanic. Why did the Titanic sank, why it was built, how they came up with the name Titanic etc. It has everything you need to know about the Titanic. Even has real actual pictures taken of the Titanic in the water and above.

5-0 out of 5 stars I Was Obsessed with TITANIC, and It's This Book's Fault!!!
This book is so interesting and exciting to read that after I read it, I was obsessed with the Titanic from 1997-1999. This book is a great read if you like the Titanic. I highly recommend it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Classic!
This is my two and a half year old son's ABSOLUTE favorite book. He asks to read "Fireman Small" every day at naptime and at bedtime too. ( we usually read it several times each sitting!) He has had this book since he was 12 months old and it was an instant hit with him. His favorite part is when fireman small saves the little girl and her kitten, he throws his arms up and yells Hooray! It is a great book about an everyday hero (fireman small). The classic illustrations are wonderful and a breath of fresh air in this computer generated age. I would highly reccomend this book for any toddler.

1-0 out of 5 stars This Book Sends The Wrong Message
Fireman Small rushes to a house that is on fire with smoke coming out all the windows and doors. Nevertheless, there is a picture and text "The family carry sofa, lamps, tables, and chairs out of the house." And yet, they still manage to leave a girl child and her pet cat upstairs.

What kind of message is this? Aren't you supposed to grab your family and get out of the house if there is a fire? What's all this about moving all of your furniture and leaving your kid and cat behind?

5-0 out of 5 stars the classic, the best firefighter picture book
Lois Lenski's _The Little Fire Engine_ was first published in the 1940s. The pictures look a little bit dated and corny. Don't let that fool you. This is the best firefighter picture book; it's the standard by which all others have since been measured.

In the story, Fireman Small races with the other firefighters to the scene of a fire, where they save a girl and her cat, locate the blaze, and extinguish it. They return to the firehouse. The story is so incredibly simple, but the author has laid everything out so that a child can learn so much from this book. Questions are answered, and children who know a lot about firefighters will have their curiosity piqued by everything in this book, from the "nang, nang, nang, nang goes the bell" to Fireman Small chopping a hole in the roof.

My son and I have looked through lots of firefighting picture books, and I think _The Little Fire Engine_ is simply the best I've seen.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book to read to your preschooler!
Catch Me, Catch Me is my three-year-old son's favorite book! Using only 50 words, it tells the story of a race between two engines, Thomas and Gordon. It's "catchy" rhymes are easy to remember. The colorful pictures contain other characters from the "Thomas the Tank Engine" series. Especially useful is the back page, which is a set of flash cards of the words contained in the story. Give "Catch Me, Catch Me" to a little one you know -- you'll enjoy reading as much as they enjoy hearing it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Catch Me, Catch Me!: A Thomas the Tank Engine Story
Our two year old loves this book. We read it to him 100 times the first week. He walks around the house asking for it all day long. Go, Go, Go are his new favorite words now!

5-0 out of 5 stars Cute!
My two year old loves this flip book filled with surprises. It's colorful and creative!

3-0 out of 5 stars mixed review
There are some good things and some bad things about this Thomas the Tank Engine story book. The illustrations are action-filled and colorful, the text is simple, and the book includes tiny flash cards for helping your beginning reader; however, the text is also confusing. In order to stick to 50 words the author has sacrificed clarity and readability. It's not always clear who is speaking, and rhymes are often strained and awkward. Also the lesson is not that slow and steady wins the race, as others have stated, but that Thomas is losing but then finds a shortcut through a tunnel. All-in-all, not the best of this educational and entertaining series.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thomas does it again
What a wonderful wonderful story for youngsters. It's simple yet catchy text encourages pre-reading. Also has a good message-- slow and steady wins the race. My 2 and 3 year old boys love it. Be prepared to read this one over and over. You'll have it memorized in no time!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great new story
After reading the original 5 or 6 Curious George stories to my 2 year old son about a hundred times, it is refreshing to see some new adventures. We just picked up this book today after going to the dump and my son just loves it. The spirit of the original stories is still there while the artwork is slightly more crisp and detailed. I look forward to reading the other new stories!

5-0 out of 5 stars Little Boys Love It!
A dump truck, a lever that gets pulled not once but twice, and robbers! What a combo and George is a hero again. I hope someday that they bring this version out of print. My boys loved it and my preschool boys page through it everyday! It is also a great springboard to the other great Curious George books.

5-0 out of 5 stars A family favorite
My 3 year old loves Curious George books and all kinds of heavy equipment so combining the two means it's one of his favorite books, and just like George he is always curious especially about George and why he is doing what he is doing. The little red plane is getting ready for takeoff. Load the last few pieces of luggage. Check the controls. And "up, up, and away!" What a day to fly!

Young airplane buffs will undoubtedly love this highly interactive board book, even if the pull-tabs and flaps might be a tad tricky for the smallest fingers. Impressive technical details will require some explanation and definition for the toddler, but could inspire interesting and creative discussion ("Mommy, what's a Voltmeter set?" "What does 'remove the wheel chock' mean?"). The pilot's-eye view of the cockpit controls (complete with checklist and removable radio for contacting the control towers) gives readers a fascinating taste of flying an airplane all by themselves. This little picture book, with its bold colors and movable pieces, will make the next trip to the airport a whole new experience.

For more large-vehicle fun, collect Ken Wilson-Max's three other interactive mini board books: Big Blue Engine, Little Green Tow Truck, and Big Silver Space Shuttle. (Baby to Preschool) --Emilie Coulter ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My daughter loves it. Not just for boys.
I am writing in response to the reviewer who said that the book is especially great for boys. (let's not gender-type!) This is our daughter's favorite book. She is 13 1/2 months now and it has been her absolute favorite since we started reading it to her when she was just a few months old and we just ordered a second copy because hers is so tattered from use. Highly recommended for girls as well! :)

This is our daughter's favorite book. She is 13 1/2 months now and it has been her absolute favorite since we started reading it to her when she was just a few months old and we just ordered a second copy because hers is so tattered from use. Highly recommended for girls as well! :)

5-0 out of 5 stars Pilot Seal of Approval
Another big vote for this book. As a small red plane pilot, I've given out two of these books to friends kids, with very positive results. 90% of the activities
are amazingly accurate, from "chocks away" to refueling.

I agree that it is a little fragile, as some of the cardboard effects are a bit ambitious, but worth it for the detailed appreciation of flying.

Captain Brian says "take off!"

3-0 out of 5 stars Not for rough players....
My two-year-old son loves this book but he has already destroyed more than fifty percent of it after two months of use.

This book has many interesting features, from radio sets connected by string, to "radar blips" on a screen in a cockpit, little planes "flying" through the sky, to a steering wheel that changes the view out windscreen as you "come in for a landing--and that isn't even half of the activities in the book.

The problem is that it requires a high degree of fine motor skill to operate many of the activities. The "radar blips" were difficult for me to spin, for example, and the steering wheel kept getting stuck until mommy tore it in one of her many attempts to "Fix it!" under pressure. My son also removed all of the little "flying airplanes" in less than a week of play.

Don't get me wrong--my son still LOVES this book, despite the fact that it is now falling apart! He has a blast using the things that still work, and explaining to me how the things that are broken used to work.

I would recommend waiting until a child is at least four before buying this book for them unless they are very careful players or there will be parental help all the time it is in use.

And, I would like to add that the girls in my son's playgroup loved this book as well--it is DEFINITELY not just for boys!

5-0 out of 5 stars My daughter's favorite book
My daughter received this book for her 4th birthday. She loves the moving parts of the plane and all the action. She reads it to herself now that she is learning to read. I highly recommend this book for all children from ages 2-6. Younger children may damage the moving pieces quickly. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Must have for little boys
I have a three year old boy. We have owned this book since he was 18 months when we found it in a consignment store. Every page is taped down the center to help it get through the excitement he feels when looking at the working trucks. It has a fantastic collection of working trucks, i.e. excavators, dump trucks, road equipment; as well as every other kind of vehicle. His friends are thrilled each time they look through it and I fear for the books pages and am beginning to think we may need a second copy. If you have a little one who likes trains, planes, boats, trucks or cars he will love this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A preschool classroom standout
In my preschool classroom of 4 year olds this book is the VERY favorite of all the boys. In fact, after about 6 months it is falling apart through considerable use and I need to order another. They huddle around it on the floor and pour over the pictures talking excitedly and naming all the cars, planes etc. A few children have shown it to their moms and asked to have one at home. You won't miss if you get this one!

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for children who like wheels
This book was and continues to be a favorite of my two sons (ages 2 and 5). Each page includes several clear, colorful photographs of all types of vehicles on land, sea and air. Short descriptions of their use or how they move are included. Not recommended as a bedtime story though, since it can be quite stimulating.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brief text, bright pictures of both comon & extreme machines

A little boy in a striped engineer cap and overalls extols the manyvirtues of trains in this boldly colored celebration of that most romantic formof transportation. Holding a toy train, he gazes out his bedroom window onto thebucolic countryside bisected by a set of tracks, while train cars "hoot and roaras they rumble by my door." One long train stretches over the course of thebook; every two-page spread features several types of cars and the boy's simple, rhyming descriptions. "Some carry steel; some carry scrap, or secret stuffthat's under wrap." The latter shows what's obviously an airplane, under cover.Vibrant swaths of color and heavy black outlines make the vivid, almostchildlike pictures particularly pleasing to the eye. And as the last car roundsthe bend, we discover there's a special reason our hero loves trains so much, especially the caboose! 5-0 out of 5 stars A must have
My 2 1/2 year old son has loved this book for over a year, and has it completely mesmorized. I have taped the pages so many times, I am going to have to break down and by another one. The inside cover naming all the diffent types of train cars is awesome. You have to have this book, it is THE BEST.

5-0 out of 5 stars I Love Trains
My grandson loved the library copy of book so much that I checked it out for him many times and finally bought him his own copy for his birthday. The text and art go together perfectly and trains are popolar with lots of little kids.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simple, clever rhyme -- vibrant and fun illustrations!
My son has loved this book since we discovered it in our local library when he was only 16 months old. We check it out constantly and his face always lights up when he sees it. My 5 year old daughter loves to read it to him and enjoys it almost as much as our little train enthusiast. He'll be so happy when he finds this among his presents at his upcoming 3rd birthday party.

4-0 out of 5 stars Simple, colorful.
I LOVE TRAINS is a reading one-on-one book, but it's really two books in one. The first is a simple book that lets the child learn to read, telling about the uses of different kinds of cars on trains. But it's also a great picture book. The illustrations are colorful, fun, and contain lots of interesting things to look at. Several of the pictures are excellent for sitting with a child and making up a story, or for asking the child "What do you see in this picture? What's going on?" A great Rx for the imagination.

5-0 out of 5 stars a sweet poem for train lovers
If someone in your house loves trains, they will find a kindred spirit in the little boy who narrates this delightful book. He tells us what he likes about a passing train ("I like trains that hoot and roar/as they rumble by my door"), and the surprise at the end is sweet. Illustrations are bright, outlined scenes in a rural setting. Some illustrations are very simple and others are filled with activity. The boy's dad is mentioned and seen in the story, nice for kids to see. And, as a bonus, the endpages show and describe the various kinds of train cars -- the tender and engine, a hopper, boxcar, flatcars, a tanker, gondolas and the caboose. This is a deceptively simple book that can be a joy and an enrichment for you and your little train lover. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A favorite gift
I first got this book for my son two years ago and we've been giving it as a gift ever since. The rhyming text and colorful pictures hold their attention and the special train info in the back is cute also. My son loves the other 3 titles in the series: Dazzling Diggers, Roaring Rockets, and Flashing Fire Engines. Great price for a hardcover book!

4-0 out of 5 stars "I want it NOWWWWW"
