Book Description

Facsimile edition of a beloved, long out-of-print children's classic.

The charm and uniqueness of New York City was never more beautifully and whimsically created for children than in Miroslav Sasek's This Is New York. First published in 1960, his vision of New York nearly forty years ago still remains fresh: the hustle and bustle of Times Square, the ethnic neighborhoods, the awe-inspiring architecture. Sasek captured the essences of New York that delight children and parents, many of whom who will remember the book from their childhood.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Children's Books Ever!
My elementary school library had seven of M. Sasek's "This Is" books. They were simply magical to me as a child. I used to always have at least one checked out. I believe I set a record for most consecutive weeks of having a single book checked out with "This Is Washington DC". I have since collected 17 of the 18 "This Is" books as an adult. They are still magical. The books portray an optimism that is missing in today's world. Sasek's beautiful artwork is bright and cheery. Anyone who is a fan of Mary Blair and her style of art would love Sasek's artwork. The books are just as enjoyable for adults as well as children. There is a ton of tongue-in-cheek humor that I never got as a child. The books are sure to strike the spirit of adventure for any youngster. I am looking forward to reading these books to my child when he gets old enough.

The amazing thing about "This Is New York" is that it still captures the spirit and vitality of New York today. It would make an excellent addition to any book collection, child or adult.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic children's book
These books by Miroslav Sasek were possibly my most beloved books as a child. I am thrilled that 2 of the series are being reprinted. His illustrations are charming and timeless. I used to pour over these books wondering what these cities would be like. I'm hoping that This is Paris and This is London will follow.

5-0 out of 5 stars REPRINT SASEK, PLEASE!
Sasek's classic works belong in bookstores right next to Tintin and Madeline and Babar. They are as informative as entertaining for children, and adults. I notice that Amazon lists quite a few Sasek titles: missing is This Is Venice and This is Texas. Anyone notice any other missing titles?

5-0 out of 5 stars I want the whole series! In Hardcover!
When I was a kid in the '60s I used to soak up Sasek's books in the school library. His books would spring me from the daily salt-mine that was my school and take me all over the world outside. Even today they're stamped into my brain, from the type-face on the covers to his immortal art-deco cartoon illustrations, and all with that light show-and-tell touch needed for a children's book. They were, and are, superb travel brochures for kids of all ages.

5-0 out of 5 stars informative and humorous
This is one of many travel books by Sasek. They teach children about great cities mostly by the delightful and humorous pictures. The pictures are colorful and cartoonlike, yet accurately and uncannily capture each city's unique qualities. I am interested in collecting the whole series in English. ... Read more

Here's a flat-out classic. In 1962, Czech author-illustrator Miroslav Sasek created This Is San Francisco, another installment of his series of children's travel guides (This Is Paris, This Is London, This Is New York). With his usual distinctive and charming style, Sasek tours the sights around the City by the Bay, including Lombard Street, the cable cars, Fishermen's Wharf, Golden Gate Bridge, and Chinatown. This 2003 reissue edition also includes a number of annotations about how certain locales have changed since the book was published. There's a good chance that anyone who grew up in or near San Francisco will remember this book fondly.Everyone else has a joyous discovery ahead.--David Horiuchi ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Charming
I read this book to my class of third graders today, and they got a kick out of it. The illustrations are very cool and "retro," and it's fun to update the kids as to how the city has changed over the years. I found the text to be a bit stilted, but other than that, it's great, and definitely worth having in one's library.

5-0 out of 5 stars What took them so long?
I'm so glad they finally decided to start reprinting these wonderful, whimsical books by M. Sasek. I can't wait until the whole series is out. They are books I remember reading over and over when I was a kid and would love to share them with my family. ... Read more

The skies are alive with kids racking up frequent-flier miles, writes Travel and Leisure. The Children's Travel Journal keeps young globetrotters busy and entertained during any trip and also serves as a keepsake that vividly preserves their memories. The format is thoroughly kid-friendly. Pages on the right side of the book are ruled, with scattered words and phrases to prompt writing. For example, on the Restaurants page, kids are encouraged to think about new tastes and best desserts. The left-side pages are blank for drawing, pasting in mementos, and additional writing. Throughout are witty illustrations, maps, and borders that await the traveler's crayon. ... Read more

My daughter is delighted with this journal. It prompts a child to write about things they may not have thought about. I think it will be a great thing for keeping my daughter busy on the plane ride. ... Read more

Book Description

In her classic books, Laura Ingalls Wilder lovingly described the many little houses she and her family lived in as they traveled across the American frontier. Today, these houses have been preserved as sites and museums that thousands of fans visit every year. The Little House Guidebook contains detailed information on these sites, as well as guidance on where to eat and stay, and other places to explore in the surrounding areas. Special features included colored tabs on each chapter for easy reference, a room-by-room tour of Laura's Rocky Ridge Farmhouse, and a walking tour and street map of De Smet, Laura's little town on the prairie, as well as guidance on how to get to the sites, where to eat and stay, and other places to explore in the surrounding areas.

Lavishly illustrated throughout with beautiful full-color photographs of Laura's houses and memorabilia, and gently colorized versions of Garth Williams' original art from the Little House books, this guidebook is the perfect companion for anyone who wants to visit Laura's little houses or just read about them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Invaluable Resource for Little House Fans
William Anderson has done a fabulous job in painstakingly documenting everything there is to see from New York to South Dakota that has anything to do with Laura Ingalls Wilder's "Little House" series. Ever wondered what happened to Pa's fiddle? Or if the house dug out from the banks of Plum Creek is still intact? This book has the answers. Complete with color photographs, addresses, phone numbers and maps, as well as ample background information, The Little House Guidebook is a must have for Little House fans everywhere. Even if you never get to visit these places, this book will take you there.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good source for touring sites, rehash of some old material.
If I were to take any books along with me on a LIW journey, it would be this one. The reason for a lower rating is because I was disappointed in a rehash of what to find at the Little House sites that was already published in another of Anderson's titles.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
Laura!

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb Reading and Travel Planning Book
The Little House Guidebook is filled with the museums, houses and visitors sights about the legacy of Laura Ingalls Wilder and her family.

Beautiful, accurate photography amazes your eyes as any fan dreams of visiting each and every place. The first photo on the page dedicated to Walnut Grove, only 45 minutes from my hometown, is exactly how it looks today. A large sign just uphill from Plum Creek states where the sod house was.

Thanks to this wonderful book, our family knew all the best places to visit, shop at, and devour historical facts of. It even led us right to the church bell Pa had given his last three dollars for. We'll use it again on all our future adventures.

This book was well researched, written and photographed. It glorifies my Little House ongoing collection.

If you are a fan, or know someone who is, this book would be a fabulous gift, just as it was given to me for my birthday.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Little House site resource!

5-0 out of 5 stars Are We Where Yet?
Travel can be confusing (and sometimes boring) to children, but this journal can help parents deal with that! My daughter and I found this book in the Houston airport as we were browsing stores during a long layover. I bought it out of desperation (after all, it had markers and blank pages!), but it turned out to be a wonderful investment. It is a very kid-oriented travel journal, with questions, hints, and prompts to guide the young journalist through recording their trip(s). It gives you and your child something to do together while flying or at night in the hotel, and as an extra bonus, it's a great show-and-tell item when your child returns to school. I've saved the journal for my daughter's trunk, so that years from now she can read her own thoughts about Oregon and Arizona! We highly recommend this!! (One aside: smart six and seven year olds will do just fine with this journal if you work with them.)

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't leave home without it!
This travel journal is an excellent tool to capture vacation memories and relive them for a lifetime. The journal boasts brightly colored "topic" pages along with markers and stickers which allows the child's creativity to shine through in words and/or artwork. We've used this travel journal for three vacations and wouldn't leave home without it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Makes 15-hour ride fun
We have used this book for three long car trips--800 miles each way. It has provided us with a wonderful journal to look back on in later years. In addition, the games, activities, and songs in the book help make a long car ride fun. I just bought four more to give as gifts. This book is wonderful for anyone, not just kids.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great travel journal for kids!
I bought 2 of these journals for my 2 kids to take on a recent cross-country trip to visit relatives. The journals have a page to record what happens each day, plus a whole section of travel games. The kids had fun writing in their journals every day, and now we can look back and remember all the fun we had! ... Read more

A wacky cross-country adventure starring the fifty states!

"Well, it was just your basic, ordinary day in the good old U. S. of A. States all over the country were waking up, having their first cups of coffee, reading the morning paper, and enjoying the beautiful sunrise.

All the states, that is, except for Kansas."

At the first annual "states party," Virginia and Idaho hatch a plan to swap spots so each can see another part of the country. Before the party is over, all the states decide to switch places. In the beginning, every state is happy in its new location. But soon things start to go wrong. Will the states ever unscramble themselves and return to their proper places?

Packed with madcap humor and whimsical illustrations, this quirky story-starring all fifty states-is chock-full of introductory facts and silly antics that will make learning geography as much fun as taking a vacation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Colorful illus. & fun story cleverly mask geography lesson!
It isn't often you come across a children's book that's unique in it's story, fun in it's presentation, and a delight to read. Laurie Keller accomplishes this with "The Scrambled States of America". The unique idea of each state having it's own personality and voicing it's opinions on his place in the country, is both comical and creative. This book brings together colorful illustrations and a geography lesson, which will have children learning the names & shapes of the states after reading the book for just the first time! I highly recommend this book as a source of knowledge, imagination, & fun.

5-0 out of 5 stars An educational laugh-fest!
I don't know who loved this book more--me or my 3 year old son!
It's definately a fun way to learn a little about the states, and introduce youngsters to the USA. This was one book he wanted to read again, and again, and again & I was happy to read it each time. It's silly & fun for kids & adults!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Funny and Educational Book
The Scrambled States of America is a great book because it's both
funny and educational. It helped me learn the names of the fifty
states. My little brother who can't read yet, can identify all
of the states because of this book. We also enjoy the card game...

"There's no place like home". That's what all 50 states learned in this hilarious, slightly romantic tale.

It all starts when Kansas (who was very angry) decides to invite all the states to a "states party" to meet new states.
At the party, Nevada and Mississippi fell in love. Later, Virginia and Idaho suggested that all the states switched places. All the states agreed to this, so they all changed places through the day.
Will our fair country stay like this? Find out in The Scrambled States of America!

I liked this book because (like I told you) it was hilarious! I really liked the part when all the states went home.

I recommend this book to kids who: 1) like fiction, 2) can read picture books.

Read this book to find out the funniest U.S. story ever!

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant, lovely children's book - a classic
This book, and the entire series of books by Miroslav Sasek, are just wonderful. The story introduces children (ideally from ages of about 3 - 7) to the magic of Paris. The book evokes a sense of wonder, while relaying facts about Paris that children will find very captivating. We see things like Notre Dame, a ticket to ride the Metro, and a gendarme. The illustrations are just lovely, done in a style that helps provide a leaping off point for imagining even more about the story. A marvel of brilliance masquerading as simplicity! The book has been in print for nearly 50 years, and deserves it place along with other children's classics of the city like "Make Way for Ducklings." ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Japan For Kids - best available!
OK. The book was written by an American primarily from an American point of view, and is heavily weighted towards life in Tokyo. Some basic demographics: Japan - total population about 127 million. The English speaking population in Tokyo is maybe 40,000 (if you assume that most of the West Europeans speak English on top of their mother tongues). The number of registered foreigners living in all of Japan is about 1,686,444 (as of Dec 2000) of which 2.7% are US citizens representing the fifth largest ethnic group after Koreans, Chinese, Brazilians and Philippinos. This is to give you an idea of how small the total number of English speaking foreign residents is. Naturally they are spread out very unequally all over this country with the greatest numbers concentrated in the Tokyo/Yokohama corridor and in the Osaka/Kyoto/Kobe region.

Diane writes very positively. In spite of lack in total coverage of the whole country, this book makes Japan more attractive to people who would be overwhelmed otherwise by the exotic nature of Japan, a country where very few people are capable of communicating on even the simplest level in English (unlike Singapore, Hong Kong, Sweden, Holland, India, etc.) The book is too short to address every nook and cranny of an endless topic, but it is a darn good start in the right direction and the only book of it's kind. Supplemented by the Japan Health Handbook, long term visitors have a good set of tools for tackling the job of living here with limited or no Japanese language ability. There are several chapters dealing with general information applicable to living in most urban areas of Japan. She has also included a lot of web site URLs in this second edition which make more detailed information on a local basis available. This book is not the definitive resource, nor was it meant to be at only 320 pages, but it is an excellant place to get started in the exploration of a potential lifetime experience.

For a family travelling as tourists to Japan this book is also immensely useful coupled with the Lonely Planet Guide and universally helpful hotel concierges (even when their English is sometimes lacking). Even if this book only manages to impart to the reader the "flavor" of this country, the multitude of things that appear similar on the surface but are actually quite different, then the reader has acquired that much more data with which to navigate. It may be best to see this book as a good reference book which will lead to other places for more detailed information once arrived in Japan.

4-0 out of 5 stars Tokyo for American Kids
A more apt title for this book is perhaps "Tokyo for American Kids", because that is what it is mostly about. I am located in Yokohama, which is not far from Tokyo, so fortunately it is still useful for me, as it contains some references to Yokohama. However, if you are living in other parts of Japan, the book's usefulness is limited. The book makes many references to getting access to things that you are used to "back home", where home is America, so if you aren't American that's not much help either. Having said all that, the book has many good features if you are living in or near Tokyo, including lists of English-speaking doctors, parks/playgrounds and things to see and do, however don't rely too heavily on the directions to the attractions given in the book, as some of them are pretty ordinary. There is enough general type of information to make the book worth buying regardless of your location, if only to give you an idea of what to expect if you are moving to Japan with children, just don't be disappointed when you discover that most of the specific details provided are aimed at people living in Tokyo. If you are moving to Tokyo, this book is excellent. If you are an American moving to Tokyo, then it's even better!

2-0 out of 5 stars This book should have been titled " Tokyo for Kids"
This book should have been titled, "Tokyo for Kids". I was extremely excited to get this book but my excitement faded to disappointment when I opened it's cover to only find mostly things that realated to the Tokyo area. I am currently living in Japan with my husband and daughter and was hoping for more of an insiders view of things to do in Japan. However, I live quite a distance from the Tokyo area and had hoped to find out about things more locally, or even within a more resonable distance then Tokyo. It would have been nice to see more comprensive coverage of Japan. Not everyone who lives here, flocks to the Tokyo area. Although I do plan to visit there at least once while living here, it is not close enough to be the focus of weekend or even monthly outings. There were a few other areas mentioned, but it seemed to me that the authors of this book did not take enough time to throughly reasearch all areas of Japan. There is some useful information in here as far as contacts and ordering, but if you live anywhere outside Tokyo, I can not reccomend this book to you. It is a well written and informative book for what it is, but it should not have been titled, "Japan for Kids", nor claimed to be the ultimate guide...

3-0 out of 5 stars Too Much Tokyo
Yes, there is a lot of great information here, and if you are in Japan with your kids I'm sure this book will be helpful. However, despite the "Japan" in the title, most of the specific places mentioned in the book (museums, hospitals, parks, etc.) are in Tokyo, followed by the Osaka-Kobe area. It can make you very envious if you don't live there!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Lifesaver
This book never left the coffee table in the 2 years we lived in Japan. Although some of the info was outdated (phone numbers, etc.) it gave me so much information on wear to take my 3 year old to play, go to preschool, get a haircut, etc. It even gave me great advice on giving birth in Japan when I became pregnant with baby #2! It is written in a very easy way - I found myself picking it up and reading a few pages whenever I had a free moment. This book is a must for anyone heading over to Japan with kids - DON'T LEAVE HOME WITHOUT IT! If you can wait until July an updated version will be published (thank you amazon.com for that information!)Since we will probably be heading there again for a few years (this time with 3 kids) I already have it on order. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A reader's choice
I have just read a book called walker of time and it was amazing.
I would recommend it for people aged from 10 to 50.

It is about a Hopi indian boy called Walker who travels back in time 600 years. While he is travelling back in time a young white boy manages to get zapped back as well. Walker knows he's been sent back for a reason, but what??

It is half an adventure and half a sad story.

5-0 out of 5 stars best book in the world
My dad bought this book for me a few years ago and I didn't think i would like it but i tried it out anyway. it was the best book ever. i lent it out to so many people that i never got it back but everyone who read it loved it.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book ever!
A few years ago my mom got me this book for my birthday, and I thought I'd try it out. It turned out to be the best book I have ever read, and I am not exagerating! I have read it every year since I got it, and I strongly suggest you read it, and realize what I'm talking about. The adventure and suspense is great, as well as the dialogue and strong characters you will want to meet. Take my word for it, once you pick it up, you'll never want to put it down!

5-0 out of 5 stars Walker of Time is a real journey
The book I've read is called the "Walker of Time". The reading level is not too hard and not too easy. I would recommend this book to the people who like reading adventure books. As you read through this book, it gives you a good atmosphere and you will feel like you are in the story. This story is based on time travelling. The main character is called Walker or Wayma in Hopi language. Walker had to travel and confront dangerous situation. He had to travel to find out about the time travelling. As he travels through in the story, he finds new companies. Such as when Walker was blackout because of the thunderstorm and when he woke up the first thing he saw was this white American called Tag. After that he met flute maiden and more like white rabbit and the eagle. This story is like "Wizard Of Oz" because as he travel he met new friends. This book is kind of a gentle, flowing of ideas. After all, if you are a real adventure book reader, you should get a copy of "Walker of Time".

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a very good book. I think all people should read it
This is a very very good book and everyone that is interested in time travel should read it. It is about two people that go to the past. One of them wasn't supposed to end up there. While there in the past Walker, the main character, finds out a lot of stuff about his life. Anyway this is a very good book I think everyone should read it! ... Read more

Book Description

In this handy-size book, renowned critic and historian (and New Yorker) Leonard S. Marcus has created and narrated twenty walking tours of New York City based on children's literature. Illustrated with maps, photographs, and book art, the tours can be followed from start to finish or abbreviated to suit a reader's, or a family's, particular interests. Together they feature over one hundred places and spaces by which New York has lit the imaginations of writers and artists as varied as E. B. White, Maurice Sendak, Judy Blume, Faith Ringgold, Madeleine L'Engle, and many more. Along the way, Marcus deftly discusses more than two hundred of the best books about New York City ever written for young people. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A charming idea, well-executed
Leonard Marcus hit upon a great idea and developed it perfectly. As a teacher, it is difficult to teach history or literature to the young and make the readings come to life. "Storied City: A Children's Book Guide to New York City", besides being a charming idea, is also a handy tool for parents and teachers. With this extremely convenient guide, you can walk the kids through the neighborhoods they've read about and enliven their reading experience. And, most importantly, Marcus writes in a way that doesn't talk down to children, and that's a tremendous asset.

4-0 out of 5 stars a perfect delight
With clarity and affection born of familiarity and delight, Marcus covers over 200 places and spaces in New York that have made an appearance in books for children and teenagers. He tells you how to get there and what you will see when you do. It is a lovely size, easy to carry and to hold, and it will take you on a virtual journey even if you and your children can't do a real one. ... Read more
