5-0 out of 5 stars Smiple and Inspiring
My mom got this book for me and I love it.I shared with whole class and my teacher read the book to us. They liked the meaning of NAMASTE and the colourful pictures.
My favorite part is the honest boy who teaches you honesty in a very simple way.

5-0 out of 5 stars FindersKeepers - a good book
I got this book as a gift. As an Indian-American it helped me learn more about my culture. I took this book to school for "show and share". All my friends and teachers enjoyed the stories and the nice pictures. Especially the picture with differnt kids holding hands around the world. my teachers also liked that theme. Thank you.

4-0 out of 5 stars Finders Keepers by Robert Arnett, Smita Turakhia
This is a very good book. In the story a boy finds the author's wallet and gives it back instead of keeping it and he doesen't accept a reward. He says,"I don't need a reward for doing the right thing."

The story plot is really good. The illustrations are good too.
You should read this book because you will learn a lot about customs in India and values of being a good person.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finders Keepers by Robert Arnett
This is a great storybook and I like the pictures. The bus picture is the best picture and it would be fun to ride on top of a bus. I think other children should read this book too.

5-0 out of 5 stars I Learned Many Things About India
This book is about a man who's on vacation to India. I learned many interesting things about India from it.

For example, I learned that a toran is something that is hung over a doorway to welcome God and guests. Torans are made of fresh flowers and leaves. Torans can be seen all across the country.

One thing I learned is that to say "hello" or "goodbye," it is called namaste. And how you do it is to get your hands together like you're praying and bow your head.

I also learned that there are a lot of bats in India that like to hang in the daylight in trees.

In the story, the man drops his wallet and a little boy finds it and gives it to him. And then the man tries to reward him with money. But the boy didn't want the money. So the man asks a man who knows English and the boy's language to ask the boy why he doesn't want the money. The man tells him that the boy doesn't understand why he should be rewarded for giving him his wallet.

They have great pictures in this book.

I think other people should read it too.(...) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A GREAT SCRAPBOOK / TRAVEL JOURNAL FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY!
After a family explores fun places (on weeklong vacations or maybe just lots of little day trips) . . . what's the best thing to do with all those brochures, postcards, photos and thoughtful memories? George and Michele Zavatsky, authors of the best-selling "KIDS LOVE" travel series, think they the simple answer. They were inspired by fellow travelers to design "KIDS LOVE TRAVEL MEMORIES! - A Family's Keepsake Book for Scrapbooking all the Fun Places You've Visited!" But, why this book . . .and what's so unique about it? The Zavatsky's, as a family, are thankful to be called "the family that goes on vacation for a living". Over the years, they have spent thousands of hours traveling to and writing about kid-friendly places to visit. While promoting their books, they met thousands of people who have the same great thrill . . . planning the next big adventure, watching the eyes of the kids, and talking about all the fun times. They encouraged a travel journal and scrapbook to remember those great times, but had many questions about how to assemble these journeys into a quick and easy format. Generally, just one family member (usually Mom!) was assigned the task of endless, time-consuming scrapbooking. A simple solution: Compile the best of the best . . . thoughts to remember, ways to remember them, and artwork and graphics that trigger the memories of the special places in a family's history book. If you can imagine, each family member is able to simply categorize their travel memories. Kids can color pictures and paste photos while parents and older siblings easily answer travel questions on the journal pages. A sampling of what you'll find in each chapter: Amusements: Been sliding down a coaster? Visited a prehistoric forest or hung out in the Old West? This place was voted the biggest "tourist trap" and we sure fell in . . . Animals & Farms: Are there really nice snakes or pampered fish? Do buffalo still roam? Do wolves still howl at the moon? Which dairy farm makes the best ice cream? History: Skipped stones near the homes of Washington, Boone, or famous Native Americans? Seen where government convenes? Would you enjoy pioneer daily chores? Museums: Visited museums on wars, music or modes of transportation? The all out best Children's Museum we found was? A place you pretended to be a jockey, a pilot, a heart, a captain or a miner. Outdoor Exploring: The best "fish story" we heard. Climbed up a real lighthouse or hiked across giant bridges recently? Heard the roar of wonderful waterfalls or the gentle drips of stalactites, or the echo-o-o of a canyon? Seasonal & Special Events: Eat your way through apple, cherry, berry, ice cream, maple and popcorn festivals. Festivals of Lights, train rides with Santa, fireworks shows, pumpkin patches or Easter egg hunts. Our favorite seasonal festival and what we liked.. Sports: Ever pretended you're running out of a virtual locker room in many Hall of Fames? The best way we've tried to get a sport's stars autograph was ... The Arts: Have you discovered unique things that can be called "art". The curtains up! Concerts & plays we saw and loved ... Theme Restaurants: Some new foods the kids tried. Have you tasted foods like burgoo, hobos, gorilla grilled cheese or hot browns? Ever eaten in a old schoolhouse, a train depot, a log cabin, a riverboat, a firehouse, or a 50's diner? Tours: Seen how castles or toys are made? Watched food factories make candy, cheese, ice cream, and snack foods? We got our favorite free souvenir at ... KIDS LOVE TRAVEL MEMORIES! can be a fun book to use on your journeys or to assemble in the off-season as a family around the kitchen table. What becomes of each scrapbook is what everyone contributes. It is a special family creation that becomes your book to be proudly displayed on any coffee table, in any family's home. The Zavatsky's say their ultimate mission statement is "...that your children will develop a love and passion for quality family travel experiences that they can pass on to another generation of family travelers." They add, "many times, some of our fondest memories were not made at an expensive attraction, but rather when it was least expected". Now you have a way of simply keepsaking all those special times!

5-0 out of 5 stars Good generic overview of the rainforest
This is a beautifully done book. Readers are incorporated into a journey into the rainforest where they learn about preparations for the trip, human activities and life in the area, rainfall, life in the different areas of the rainforest, terms, adaptations of plants and animals and more.

This book is a good introduction for younger readers and is a refreshing change from some of the other works that outline specific areas of the rainforest (like the layers) and rant and rave about loss of biodiversity.

Although the book touches on the important points it provides a good introductory overview and introduces words, concepts, plants and animals for further research.

The ending leaves room for futher adventures in a sequel -- or for the teacher to explore with the class. I found this book when looking for texts for a more advanced workshop that I teach. I would recommend it as part of a rainforest curriculum package. ... Read more

Book Description

Washington, D.C., is "hometown"for every American. In the coming election year, against the background of recent international events, thoughts will turn to Washington as never before. Martha Day Zschock is not only a brilliant artist, whose "Journey Around"books have captured readers of all ages in Boston, New York, and San Francisco, and on Cape Cod; she is also an educator, who designed her bestselling series to teach children about our great American places. This is far more than an alphabet book. Each page is headed by an alliterative sentence that evokes an important theme. The "A" page reads, "America’s anthem awakens awe."Each page also features a paragraph of history. Again, the "A" page explains how "The Star Spangled Banner" was written and what has happened to the flag that flew over Fort McHenry. At the bottom of each page is a playful factoid; the "A" page explains the evolution of the American flag. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book (and series!) for all ages to enjoy
This book is 1 of 5 in a series on different U.S. cities. I was really impressed with the author/illustrator's artwork and love all the neat little details that she manages to fit on each page (so much that I met her at a book signing near DC so she could autograph it!). It is also set up in a way that even my 2 year old can enjoy the shorter, brief insets on each page, my 7 year old can enjoy and learn from the more detailed descriptions at the bottom, and even I really enjoy the beautiful artwork and have learned new things from it myself. She captures some truly interesting highlights from each of the cities in this series (others are Cape Cod, Boston, New York, San Francisco). It is a great book that I would recommend for ANY age! ... Read more

The travel bug knows no limits of age or gender, and neither should travel literature. In Alice Ramsey's Grand Adventure, writer and illustrator Don Brown tells the story of an intrepid young woman and her 59-day drive across America in 1909. As Brown soon makes clear, Alice Ramsey's journey was no mean feat--for one thing, the roads were poor, there were no road signs, and there was only one guidebook for motorists--the Blue Book, which contained directions such as "Turn left at the red barn with the yellow silo..." Excellent directions as long as the farmer hadn't repainted the silo blue.

Accompanied by her friend Hermine and her two sisters-in-law, Alice Ramsey made her way west, fording flooding streams and muddy roads and facing mechanical failures, terrible weather, and other obstacles both natural and manmade until at last she entered San Francisco to a grand parade. Alice Ramsey's Grand Adventurehas drama, humor, suspense--in short, all the qualities one looks for in travel literature--and charming illustrations as well, guaranteed to appeal to young travelers-in-the-making. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Here is a Road Trip where you can admire the women
No doubt young readers will be struck by the idea that on June 9, 1909 a twenty-two-year-old woman named Alice Ramsey made a name for herself by becoming the first woman to drive across America in an automobile. After all, the thought that this achievement would be a big deal should strike this as being somewhat odd. But one of the things that "Alice Ramsey's Grand Adventure" does is remind its readers what life was like at the turn of the last century, especially if you happened to be a woman (after all, women could not yet vote in the United States).

Told and illustrated with watercolor paintings by Don Brown, "Alice Ramsey's Grand Adventure" makes it clear why this fifty-nine day trip, which began on June 9, 1909, was something akin to something done by pioneers the century before. After all, Alice did this trip traveling with her friend and her sisters-in-law, and the only one who knew anything about automobiles was Alice. The car was a Maxwell touring car, which had a top speed of 42 miles per hour and where you had to light the headlamps with a match. To make things even more interesting there were no road signs, many roads were for horses rather than automobiles, and the only guidebook that existed for motorists only covered the eastern part of the country.

What is fascinating here are the details, the problems both big and small, that Alice Ramsey faced while driving across the country in her Maxwell. After all, this trip took place less than a century ago, which makes "Alice Ramsey's Grand Adventure" a great example of those tales about the Olden Days when you can really tell how different things were way back then. If young readers were to think about what they could do today that would be in the same spirit, if not the same scale, as what Alice Ramsey did, it would be interesting to see what they might come up with to rival this road trip.

5-0 out of 5 stars Alice Ramsey's Grand Adventure
A wonderful introduction to the conditions of the roads for the early travelers by car in America. Because of their determination, our roads were improved and the automobile industry flurished. A great way to make children and adults aware of the history of the early automobiles and how people like Alice Ramsey believed in them. The geography lessons lend themselves to great mapping activities.

5-0 out of 5 stars Alice Ramsey, Pioneer......
"On June 9, 1909, Alice Ramsey drove out of New York City and into a grand adventure. Alice Ramsey wanted to be the first woman to drive across America. Alice's friend, Hermine, and her sisters-in-law, Nettie and Margaret, traveled with her..." So begins Don Brown's marvelous story of a little known young woman and her dream. Mr Brown's engaging and informative text, told in an easy to read conversational style, is filled with enlightening details about how the trip progressed over its 59 day period. Pigs clogged the road in Illinois, and railroad tracks slowed them down in Chicago and "...the car bounced over mile after mile of rail until the women were dizzy." Dirt roads became muddy and impassable when it rained, and as they traveled further west, there were no roads at all. "Alice followed telephone lines, hoping the wires would lead her to the next town. It wasn't always successful-sometimes it left them even more lost." And there were many mishaps and breakdowns along the way. But as she crested the Sierra Mountains, Alice knew she was now in California and close to her goal. "Alice guided the Maxwell onto a ferry that carried them to San Fransisco. When she rolled off the ferry behind the wheel of her Maxwell, Alice Ramsey became the first woman to have driven across America! It was August 7, 1909, Fifty-nine days had passed since Alice left New York City." Charming watercolor illustrations add just the right touch, and highlight the important events of the story. Perfect for youngsters 4-8, Alice Ramsey's Grand Adventure is an inspiring tale, told by a gifted storyteller, that is sure to whet the appetite of adventurous readers and send them out looking for more.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful inspiring book for adventurerers of all ages
Luminous watercolors and a straightforward writing style serve to enchant the reader without over-romanticizing a true story. I look forward to more by this author.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nobody does it better.......

5-0 out of 5 stars The land I lost , written by Huynh Quang Nhuong( Author)
This Adventure story is full of dangerous fun and sorrow. Huynh Quang Nhuong lives in a small hamlet (village)in the central high lands of vietnam. The hamlet he lives in has a jungle on one side in which they must watch for jungle cats, lone hogs and the most dangerous the horse snake. And on the other is a river which Crocodiles live in. Many of the crocodiles are man eaters like mister short. In the begin of the story you meet Tank the Water bufflo. Tank isn't your regular water bufflo. He is bred between a lowland female because it would be patient and A moutainous bull so it would have the fierce fighting able.

The reason I choose this book was because love the outdoors. when I six years old I live in a village in Alaska and I hunted and fished all the time.

4-0 out of 5 stars the land i lost.
The book I read is about the author's life. The author tells us about his experience with animals he met. The setting is a village where the author has lived. Anyway there is very important animal called Tank. Tank is a friend of the author but it's not human it's a cow.

There are some dangerous animals, too. The author describes his adventures and his story very nicely to make people know what's going on in the book. My opinion about this book is great. I liked his adventure, the other stories from his friend, etc. if you are interested in animals then you should read this before any other books.

5-0 out of 5 stars The land I lost
I enjoyed `The land I lost', and I think this book is enjoyable for the littler children, because it has good word choices, and there are different kinds of animals I never heard of. There are all kinds of feelings you can get from the book, for example, sadness, humor or fear. I think this book is a memory of the author's life. His name is Huynh Quang Nhuong. In a chapter Tank the buffalo and the other strong buffalo are fighting, because the strong buffalo thinks he is stronger then Tank, and the other chapter, the author's cousin killed a horse snake. So read this book book, and see if I'm right.

3-0 out of 5 stars The land I lost
Here is a book called `The Land I Lost' it is written by Huynh Quang Nhuong.
Huynh is the main character he was born in the highland of Vietnam near the jungle. They were very wild animals. People train the buffalo called 'tank' it is the villages buffalo. They also trained monkeys and bird.
I didn't like some parts but I liked other part of the book. The bad reason is the book talks about the animals but doesn't tell me about how they lost their land. The good reason is it tells me about their life.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Land I Lost
Have you experienced a dirty rural but interesting life? If you didn't, you should read this book. The book "The Land I Lost" is set in Vietnam. The author's past life produces the source of the book. His name is " Huynh Quang Nhuong." The main character lived in a hamlet in Vietnam. Mostly this book shows nature, and how they adapt, and how they live together. During summer they work on farms, and during winter they hunt for their food. They keep animals like cows. They use to them for agriculture and to protect themselves from the wild animals who come down to their shelter. Also when the wild animals come down to their hamlet the villagers make groups and catch them or make them leave their hamlet. Sometimes they hunt animals and train monkeys or birds...etcMostly they lived very peacefully and joyfully.
But why is this book called "The Land I Lost." That is what you have to think about. The end of the last chapter, a battle was going on, so I think that's why the author said land I lost... I didn't like the way the author wrote about the battle story, because it was really short, so it didn't make me understand why they lost their land.
But I could see the other ways of life like the hamlet villagers. These days everybody sits on their chair and plays computer games, by this time, instead computer games we can see the difference between rural and urban and how they relate with nature and their given environment. I like most of the book, except the battle part of the story. ... Read more
