5-0 out of 5 stars fun and smart
this book was so good and the author was so smart too, she knew altituff about stuff like history andyster boats and twins and friendship and family brother-sister love, even though MY brother is really annoying and not so cool as the one in the book, I guess I love him, too, like the girl in the book

5-0 out of 5 stars Oyster Moon
I thought that Oyster Moon is a great book because I had no idea that the people on the drudger boats could be so cruel. In fact, I had no idea about this whole topic. It is an educational book without the reader realizingit. I would reccomend Oyster Moon to any reader, young or old. ... Read more

Scrambled Eggs

This story is about two sixth grade twin brothers who have to work together to help one of them make a higher grade in science. Through out the story, Judge Jenkins is struggling with dyslexia and is having trouble in school. Jury, his twin brother does good in school but only studies get by. Judge needs to get at least a D in science and the only way is to enter in the Science Rally and place in the top three. He signs him and his brother up without asking Jury. Jury is angry, but in the end realizes that he has to help his brother do good on the project or the both of them will be sent to a private school. They compete with other school and do pretty well. Read the book and find out what happens.

In my opinion the book was not very good. I did not find it exciting and it did not keep my attention. Most of the book has to deal with dyslexia and all the problems that go along with it. There are a few funny parts where the brothers are fighting and the mother is messing around with them. I would recommend this book to someone who does not like adventure. I was disappointed with the ending because it leaves you hanging.

2-0 out of 5 stars All Cracked Up Over Egg-Drop Blues
I would rate this book between six and seven. This was a good book if you like books where people focus on doing stuff at the last minute. The part of the book I liked the most was Jury helping his family save their farm. I liked the book overall but I didn't like the way the book shifts from Jury doing school projects to him getting money as a reward for his science project. To me the book skipped around a lot. I didn't feel that the book had a lot of details surrounding all the characters. Another book I would compare to this one is "Red Terror". In that book the main characters (a little girl the same age as Jury), gets money and helps her family. She buys her mom's necklace back from their neighbor that belonged to her grandmother at one time. The necklace was given to her mother by her mother and her mom sold it for money to buy alcohol because she was an alcoholic. The girl also helps her mom recover. Both kids in the books helped their families to recover from problems. I liked this book because kids were doing something to save belongings of their families. I think this shows how strong kids and families can be. It was a good book to teach some lifelong lessons. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for bedtime!
What a cute story!Janet and Jimmy are at it again, but this time the neighbor actually gives them dog biscuits to take home. So, their mother decides to take them for a walk to find two dogs worthy of the "prized" dog biscuits. After the walk, no dog was found to be suitable so the twins decide that, upon approaching a big tom cat, that they would give their biscuits to the cat.Even after their mother said that the cat would not eat them, the twins do it anyway and well, surprise! The cat ate both of them!Must have been pretty hungry to eat two dog biscuits! But then again, NEVER underestimate the thoughts and hunger of a big tom! It's pretty cute and very much a favorite in our house.Highly recommend! But then again, it's hard to go wrong with anything Cleary writes.

5-0 out of 5 stars great for reading aloud over and over again!
My children loved this and all the other Beverly Cleary picture (and chapter books).I cannot even say how many times we have read it, as well as The Read Hole, Growing Up Feet, and Janet's Thingamagig.I can see this story actually happening with small children, and I know Mrs. Cleary based this series on her own twins. The illustrations are very cute, also.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of our family's favorite books
Our three boys (ages 10, 6, and 4) have loved this book for years. The illustrations are lovely, and - what fun! - Jimmy and Janet prove their mother wrong in the end: cats do, in fact, like to eat dog biscuits.Yes, it is a simple story, but it is genuine and funny and gentle.Bravo, Beverly Cleary and Ann DaSilvo Ryan!

5-0 out of 5 stars Maybe Paul Martin isn'treading it with enough expression.
My Pre-K class loves this story. That's why I came to this website so I could buy the book.I lost my old one, and I miss it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Decent Illustrations, but Somewhat Dull Story
Certainly suitable for young readers from ages 4-8, but the story lackspizzazz. It's about twin sibblings Jimmy and Janet who--while visitng thelady next door--are given two dog biscuts, and they spend the rest of thestory trying to figure out what to do with them, and then trying to find asuitable dog to give them to. How exciting is that?

In fairness to theauthor, the story is easy for children to understand. There is nothingwrong or confusing about the story, but as a parent reading it to yourchildren, after several pages of repetitive scenarios/dialogue, you mayfind yourself wanting to skip to the end saying, "...blah, blah, blah, blah, and they lived happily ever after. Next book please!" ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars SVJH #3
I really like the SVJH series so far, it is so much better then Sweet valley Twins which my little sister used to read. There was something about this book that made me want to read it over and over again. I liked all the scenes with Salvador,Anna and Elizabeth and I thought their magazine pieces at the end of the chapters were very funny, especially Elizabeth's about school bus manners and Salvador's school uniforms. I did think Jessica was acting a bit out of character though when she became friends with Bethel. Bethel seems more like someone Elizabeth would be friends with. You should read the first two books in the series first before buying this book, it makes it more enjoyable.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best SVJH books. So far!
Through all the trials of junior high, Jessica finally finds someone to be friends with. And Bethel is a REAL friend, not like Lacey. Anyway, GO JESSICA! Congratulations!

4-0 out of 5 stars Bethel+Jessica = good & bad
Yea Yea Yea Jessica! I'm really happy that Jessica has finally found a friend. But... I don't exactly like her friend. I mean, come on! Bethel is sooooooooooooo stereotypical! I mean, she looks around at everyone and judges them by how they look. She didn't think Jessica could do it because of how she looked! And Bethel is so mean to Jessica at first, when Jessica doesn't do anything! The only thing I can think of is Bethel is jealous! Anyway, I just don't like this Bethel girl.

5-0 out of 5 stars It is not soulmates its solemates. DUH.
i like this book very much.anna was acting like a baby at first but she was also right. Elizabeth had the right to stay on spector but she should have quit with anna. salvador is very stuborn i have to admit.in the first book GET REAL iwas very mad at salvador.he has the right to like anyone but how can he forget anna, his best friend who is willing to do anything for him.I was happy jess made the right desission by telling the truth .Although i love the twins i am on anna side.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hooray for Jessica!
This book wuz phat, finally jessica is getting to be friends with someone who is nice for a change, and she is trying out some things that she would never have done at her old school! READ THIS BOOK! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars It was a really good book...
I know a lot of people may think that the book Twins in the Tavern may not be such a good book, but I think it was. The book is about a boy named Taddy who was kidnapped by two men who robbed his house after his aunt and uncle died. He was forced to work in an inn called The Dog's Tail, where he mets Beatle, another kidnapped boy. Then Taddy (now called Toady), was hired to work in the a very rich house, where he sees a boy who looks exactly like him! Could this be the twin his uncle told him about? And if so, will he ever be able to confront him and tell him?

I thought this book was very good and recommend it to everyone to read.

3-0 out of 5 stars GOOD BUT NOT A BOOK I WOULD RECOMMEND
This book has a lot of action in it and great suspense. The only problem was the author didn't quite explain the backround of the story to us. It was very confusing at first but then I figured it out. If you get confused with books very easily I highly suggest not to read this book

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding
The Twin in the Tavern is the best young adult novel I have read in a long time. It was suspenseful, had good characters, and interesting plot twists. This was my first Barbara Brooks Wallace book. After reading this on, I can't wait to read Sparrows in the Scullery.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not as good.
Right from the start, I thought this book not to be as good as other books by Barbara Brooks Wallace. As in all most of her books that I have read, though, characters underwent totall personallity morphs at the end. I would not reccomend this book highly. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very enjoyable!
This is the third book in Jane Yolen's Tartan Magic trilogy, and picks up soon after the events in The Pictish Child. In this book, Jennifer and Peter, two American children on vacation in Scotland, head off to visit a local graveyard. Peter is rather jealous of Jennifer's newfound magical ability, and wants to find some magic himself. However, when they meet three ghosts, Peter gets more than he bargained for! Now Jennifer is in a race against time to get Peter un-possessed, and put some poor souls to rest.

My thirteen-year-old daughter first introduced me to these books, and I must say that I enjoy them as much as she does. Jane Yolen does an excellent job of bring Scotland to life for the American reader (please remember that there is a Scottish glossary at the back!). In general, the author does not spend too much time on character development (outside of the children and their grandmother, the characters are very two-dimensional), but for many young readers, this will not prove a problem.

So, let me just say that my daughter and I both enjoyed this book, and we highly recommend it to you!

4-0 out of 5 stars Response To Literature
Peter and Jennifer, the main characters, are in Scotland for vacation with their family. The Bagpiper's Ghost is about a two twins, Peter and Jennifer, who listen to a dog and go to see a ghost at the cemetery at midnight. When they are at the cemetery the dog runs away and leaves the kids to defend themselves. The dog ran away because a ghost was coming. Jennifer starts to run away with Peter right behind her, but they stop because there is another ghost on the other side of the fence. Jennifer tells Peter to open the gate so they can get out, but Peter isn't Peter any more. He is Mary MacFabben's, the ghost that was behind them, brother. The ghost on the other side of the fence is Mary's boyfriend, Iain McGregor. Mary and her brother, Andrew, are twins, that's why the dog brought them there. If a dog was telling me to go to a cemetery I would be a little creep out.

The thing I wondered about at the beginning of the story was where Peter and Jennifer where at and why Peter was so excited about the sun. "I don't believe it!' Peter cried. His body showed his astonishment even more than his face, for his arms and hands were raised, and his feet did a [rather] noisy jig under the kitchen table. It was the most animated he'd been in days, even though he was clearly putting it on. Spoon half lifted, Jennifer looked up from her porridge and stared at her twin. 'You don't believe in what?' Given that they had already had days of magic, it wasn't an idle question. 'Sun,' Peter said, pointing out the window" (Yolen 1). If I had a twin that got that excited about something I would go crazy!

I picked this book because I like the style of Jane Yolen's writing. I really like the part in the book where Peter and Jennifer are at the graveyard in the daylight planning for the night ahead. "The dog's toothy grin grew wide. His great pink tongue lolled out of his mouth like a dare. 'We could sneak out, I suppose,' Peter said slowly. 'Peter!' Jennifer's voice registered shock. It was such an un-Peter thing to suggest. But she'd already thought the same thing. Twins do. 'Tonight,' they both breathed together" (Yolen 17). Even though I like to read books about ghosts and other creatures of the night I wouldn't want to really see one! That would just creep me out!

The title of this book means exactly what it says, the Bagpiper's Ghost. The ghost is the long lost love of Mary MacFadden. He went to fight in a war and he died there. Mary's brother was supposed to her a message, but he didn't. "Bonnie Prince Charlie is nae [not an] Italian upstart, brother, but the son o' our king from across the sea. And Iain was a patriot to go to his aid, though it cost him his life at Culloden.' From beyond the gate, the piper's mouth gaped open." (Yolen 50). It goes on to talk about how Mary's brother didn't give her the message and how that was bad. If I had a brother that then I would hate him till the end of the earth.

5-0 out of 5 stars A new story in an old tradition!
This wonderful story is one of three (so far) chronicling the adventures of three American children on vacation in Scotland, visiting their grandmother. They have come to realize that Scotland is filled with the magic of centuries, and the magic lives in 13-year-old Jennifer. However, when her twin, Peter goes off to look for magic, the twins soon find themselves embroiled in a new adventure! Sometimes malevolence lasts, especially that between a brother and sister.

This is a great story, harkening back so clearly to ancient folk stories. I especially liked the traditional idea of women as possessors of ancient wisdom and power, beyond men and their science, powerful and yet healing in nature. This is a great book that I recommend to everyone with children, especially girls.

5-0 out of 5 stars Undying love
The long-awaited third entry in the charming "Tartan Magic" series does not disappoint, offering new kinds of fantasy stories after using wizards and time-travel. This time, it's ghosts.

American twins Peter and Jennifer have hit a rough spot, and are bickering both with each other and with the talking dog. After the dog piques their interest in the "White Lady" ghost, they come to the graveyard at midnight, and see the White Lady (also known as Mary MacFadden) meet the ghost of a bagpiper, Iain McGregor.

But they aren't the only ghosts -- in a centuries-old confrontation, the spirit of the lady's twin brother, Andrew, appears in Peter's body, having helped separate the ancient lovers due to class and religious differences. And once in Peter's body, he doesn't intend to LEAVE. Jennifer and Gran must find some way of getting rid of Andrew, while reuniting Mary and Iiain...

Yolen retains the same charm and sense of pervasive magic in this third story. Writing is delightful, especially the climax. The descriptions of the possessed Peter/Andrew's behavior is absolutely chilling. The dialogue is thoroughly convincing (yes, even the animals like Thunder and the dog), with the distinct Scottish burrs that add the final note of authenticity. (As with the previous two books, there's a word guide at the end of the book, if you can't understand some term or accented word) There isn't much comedy, but the insult wars between the dog and Peter are hilarious. Don't be worried, kids who dislike romance, there is almost no mushiness in this book.

Gran, a delightful old Scottish white witch, is still a great counterpoint to the inexperienced twins. Molly and the parents aren't very present in this one. Jennifer and Peter show a little more difference with each other, as Jennifer realizes just how much she cares about her brother when she risks losing him. The dog is also a good character, intermittently caring and obnoxious, but always enjoyable to read.

A wonderful third instalment, may Yolen write many, many more. ... Read more

Book Description

LYNNE REID BANKS, bestselling author of the award-winning Indian in the Cupboard books, has created a darkly comic, modern classic tale of good and evil. As powerful as it is funny, ANGELA AND DIABOLA is a story that will speak to young readers on many levels. Twins Angela and Diabola come into the world as different as night and day. From the very beginning, Angela is a happy, beautiful, perfect, blue-eyed little girl. A joy to her parents, she never, never cries. Diabola arrives kicking and screaming, her green eyes flashing and her not-pretty face purple with rage. She is the bane of her parents' lives. With each passing day, Angela becomes more loving, caring, and beautiful. Meanwhile, Diabola tries her best (worst) to be as hateful and revolting as she can be. And she is successful at it-really successful. While Angela makes everyone happy, Diabola makes people infuriated, frightened, and sick to their stomachs. When the twins are old enough for school, it's a nightmare. Angela loves school, and the teacher loves Angela. Diabola has found another place to be her outrageous and appalling self. She spits in the teacher's eye and worse. No one has ever seen such a dreadful child and no one knows what to do about her-not the twins' parents, not the teachers, not even the authorities. Only Angela has the power to affect her twin. But changing Diabola comes at a terrible price... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Finding the Balance between Good and Evil
I read this book from an adult's perspective.

Like many of the reviews have already said, this book was vividly descriptive in nature and very alluring in plot.

The take home lesson for any reader would be that we should not just see things as absolute good or absolute evil, but instead see the grey areas - the fine line that separates good and evil.

We may not be angelic like Angela or demonic like Diabola. But we find the balance of good and evil in all of us human beings. Depending on which side triumphs over the side on occasions, we behave accordingly - angelically or irrately.

4-0 out of 5 stars Angel and Devil
Its girl! It's actually two girls. Twins: Angela and Diabla. Angela is as sweet as an angel and , her twin sister, Diabla is the opposite. Diablaalways throws things at Angela, but Angela still loves her anyway. Angela always want to be with be with her sister Diabla. When Angela and Diabla are together it calms diabla down.Diabla can make things cacth on fire and make buildings fall down. But when Angela is around Diabla can't do any harm to anyone. I realy enjoed this book. If you like contmporary fiction, you might enjoy Angela and Diabla.

4-0 out of 5 stars Angela and Diabola
I've borrowed this book from the school library.Well, what I can say about this book is,it's very interesting. It is about a pair of twins. One is good(called Jill),another is bad(called Jane). But later their parents made them to be christian and the good one called Angela while the bad one called Diabola. Everyone loves Angela much and hate Diabola. When the twins grow up, they have power to do good things and bad things. Of course, the good one do good and the bad one do bad. Their power were so strong that the bad one can make people sick by using her eyes and the good one can cure them if she want. I think this book is really interesting because no book I've read have got such extreme case.

5-0 out of 5 stars A super read-a-loud
I read this book to my 6th grade language arts class to start the year.It allows us to discuss good-vs-evil, and to hear a hilariously funny book.We frequently stop to make predictions about what will happen next.Everytime I stop reading, they want more.

Book Description

How can you have a ghost story without a ghost? What if the ghost is only in your head? How would you know that you aren't losing your mind?

By medical standards, sixteen-year-old Janine Palmer dies on the day of her automobile accident. When her spirit travels to the "other side," however, she is told that it isn't her time to die, and is sent back to live out her life. When she awakens from her coma, though, she discovers that she hasn't come back alone. There is someone else inside her mind. The voice in Janine's head claims to be the ghost of Lenore, Janine's twin sister, who drowned twelve years earlier. Lenore blames her own death on Janine and is determined to live again in her sister's body.

Now the two girls must vie for one body. Can Janine be sure that her twin is really inside her, or is she simply going crazy?

4-0 out of 5 stars Double Minded
Do you think it's possible to fit two minds into one body? One mind fighting against the other for control over it? If you think that's interesting, then you'd love the book Haunted Sister by Lael Littke. Janine is an ordinary high school girl, until she gets into a terrible car accident with her boyfriend, Scott. Now she struggles against her twin sister's mind that has invaded her body. Janine, the normal, nice girl, lives in an everyday, common town. She goes to a regular high school, and lives in the average family-house. Ordinary girl she may be, but not until that day of the accident. Throughout the story, Janine is trying to recover from her accident physically as well as mentally. The cuts and bruises go away, but she has this haunting voice in her head that claims to be her twin sister, Lenore, who had drowned when they were young girls. Janine finds herself doing things she would have normally never done, for instance she begins to lie and steal. Janine's personality changes all throughout the book with the help of Lenore. She wants to be the goody-two-shoes she once was, but now that her sister has invaded her body, she has an unusual bad side to her. I enjoyed this book because the author didn't jump around at all. The story was one track and easy to follow. I also loved the tension between the two characters, Janine and Lenore. They sounded a lot like real sisters that bicker and fight over everything. One wants to be good, and the other is more of a mischievous type looking for adventure. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who likes conflicts within one person and enjoys a surprise ending!

5-0 out of 5 stars Haunted by an unfamiliar voice
A Review by Sarah

In this book, Janine Palmer decides to skip class with her boyfriend, Scott, to go to the beach. On their way, they get into a terrible car accident at an intersection. Janine was put into a deep coma. During her coma she sees her dead grandfather and twin sister, Lenore. They try to speak to her and tell her to wake up and go back to her family. Janine then wakes up, but she realizes that she is not alone. Her twin's voice is haunting her. Is Janine having hallucinations from the accident, or is her twin really living in her body?

I really liked the characters in this book. Janine really had a lot of personality to her. The way she was described really made her interesting to read about. There wasn't a whole lot of action in this book, but it was suspenseful. I was constantly impatient to find out what was going to happen next. It's really hard to put this book down after you get really into it. The conflicts that Janine and Lenore kept having made it seem so real. They would argue and fight like real sisters do. The descriptions of what made Janine so mad helped you to feel like you were in the character's place. It also made it seem like Lenore was life-like.

I would recommend this book to middle school children and older. It might get confusing to kids who are younger than that. You would definitely enjoy this book if you like suspense, mystery and even a little action.

5-0 out of 5 stars Haunted Sister
Haunted Sister is a book about a fifteen-year-old girl named Janine Plamer.Janine livies in a beautiful home, with a loving family, who are always there for her when needed.

But,all of that changed when Janine went behind her parent's back, and skipped school with the boy of her dreams,Scott. Her date did not turn out the way she wanted it to.Instead of going to the beach with her "loving" boyfriend, she ended up on a hospitl bed nearly dead.Janine went into heaven, not noticing that she was dead. As she was looking around, she saw a young girl standing in the dark. The girl was looking at Janine with shimmering eyes, like she had no love,no freedom. But as Janine got closer she saw it was her twin sister,Lenore. As Janie was going to say something, a voice came out. It was her grandfather, telling her to go back. Janine was convinced to go back home. As Janine left, so did her sister. Now, Lenore wants Janine to feel how death and having no family is like,so Lenore is making Janine go simply crazy.

My opinion of this book is that I think that only mature childern should read this book because of all the horror. I think this book is very good because of all the details. This book taught me a good lesson, to never skip school with a boy that can get me killed. It also taught the importance of having love for my brother's and sister's.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Book ever wirtten!!!
Lael Littke is one of the greatest authors. I have read other books that are really good, but I really think that this book has beaten all of the other books I have read. This book is one of those books that you can't put down, its that good.
