I was disappointed and am reconsidering ever buying books online again! You can't really see what you are getting, and this is just too simple to be useful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Doctor Maisy
If your child loves Maisy books as much as mine does, definitely add this one to your collection! Not only are the pictures colorful and inviting, but it also makes going to the doctor seem fun and exciting! Plus, it's always great to see Maisy and her friends playing different roles and doing fun things! Each page brings delight to my child's eyes! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!
This book was great for preparing my daughter for an upcoming surgery. It went through the basics of what she would experience, even if the reason for the surgery was different, and it was done with a character she was already familiar with. The day of her surgery she was telling me what would happen next.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's Ok
This shows that it's ok to be scared at the hospital. Franklin got hit in the chest at a soccer game. He ends up having to go to the hospital. He thinks that when you take a x-ray. Everyone will see how scare you are inside. Franklin didn't want everyone to know how scared he was. This a good book for any child that has to go to the hospital. I t shows you don't have to be scared. The doctors and nurses are there to help you.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must-Have If Your Child Is Having an Operation
I purchased Franklin Goes to The Hospital for my 5 year old son, who was having abdominal surgery last week. He loved the book so much, that he read it every night until the surgery. It really explained all of the different procedures involved in going to the hospital - on a level that he could understand! I strongly recommend this book to any parent who is faced with having to explain surgery to a small child!

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommend for young children facing a hospital visit
Franklin came to our rescue by going to the hospital for an operation. My three-year-old son needed surgery and I wanted to prepare him for all the strange equipment, people, and procedures he would experience. This Franklin book actually had him excited to see the hospital. Many of the routine procedures were familiar to him after reading Franklin. His only disppointment was not seeing Dr. Bear at his hospital. ... Read more

I loved the first three sally books, but this one really outdoes itself. Huneck's illustrations are worth framing and thew story lends itself so well to sharing with chilren who are taking their pet to the vet for the first time.

I read this to my daughter as we brought our pet bird in for a checkup and she felt much better. Then I showed it to my vet and he had never seen another book that does such a good job of allevating a child's fear.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not All Doctors Are Bad.
Most children are afraid of going to the doctor (well a lot of adults are, too, but for completely different reasons). When the word doctor is mentioned to kids images of needles, blood, bandages, and strange looking objects come to mind. Reading THE BERENSTAIN BEARS GO TO THE DOCTOR may help relieve some of the fears that children have when they know they are going to the doctor.

In the story, Brother and Sister Bear have to go to Dr. Gert Grizzly to have a checkup. Brother isn't too bothered by the whole thing, but Sister is a bit worried. The next day Sister is able to help out some frightened younger cubs while she is in the waiting room and sets an example for all the children to follow.

Overall, a delightful little book that helps relieve children's fears of going to the doctor and gives them a broader perspective about life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Check-up
Its the cubs time for their first check-up. Sister is VERy nervous, but both of them are worried because they thing that they might get a shot.

It is a good book to read to your kids if they are going to be going for their first check-up or anytime.

5-0 out of 5 stars Book review for The Berenstain Bears Go To The Doctor
The berenstain Bears Go To The Doctor is a great book.I especially like how it has the cubs (brother and sister) going to the doctor for a check-up. They ended up not finding anything wrong with them and getting a shot anyway so they don't get sick. It turns out that papa, whose convises them that he never gets sick, gets sick. This is a really good book and fun to read. I would recommend this book to anyone.

i love it,so does my son! he will be making his first trip to the dentist soon-ad at 29m old we need all the help we can get!

the only part that is questionable is how Sister gets her loose tooth pulled. It even gave me the willies!

I was 6 years old in 1989 when my mom bought me this book. I've been hooked ever since.

5-0 out of 5 stars Help kids who are vervous about the dentist.
When sister gets a loose tooth that won't come out, mama take her to the dentist to have it removed. With brother telling her how much it hurts she becomes quite scared.

This book is great! It helps kids understand how going to the dentist is not scary or painfull!

4-0 out of 5 stars Useful, but.....
My 5 year old daughter loves these books, and we do try to read the particular ones when they are relevent. We read this before going to the dentist, but now she assumes that she'll get a loose tooth and get it pulled by the dentist. I suppose they're reasonably accurate, and they help allay some childhood fears. "Dentist Barbie" was almost as helpful for my daughter when she was three, as this book is now. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Children's tale
My little neighbor used to hate going to the doctor's but when I went to babysit her, and read her this book, she exclaimed that she wanted to go there more. I truly am touched by the fact that she wanted to go then. I reccomend this book to little kids because they are normally the most afraid of going to the mean old doctor's office. "Enchanting"

5-0 out of 5 stars Let's go to the dentist!
this is the BEST dentist book i have yet to get for my son! He loves it,and I do too!

The 'real' pictures are an added bonus and everything is done just right!

You won't be dissapointed!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for any Barney fan!
Even though the age for this book is from 4-8, my 2 year old loves it. She asks to read, "Barney Dentist" all of the time, even though she has about 15 other Barney books. I hope it will help her to not be afraid of the dentist when it comes her time to go.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply Brilliant!
There has been a noted shortage of great allegorical novels in recent years; "Barney Goes To The Dentist" plays a great role in redressing the balance. Ms Dowdy's simple tale of a purple dinosaur's trip to the dentist serves as an excellent background for a narration of the change of political paradigms in Europe after the Spanish victory over the Turks at Lepanto in 1571. The novel draws heavily from G. K. Chesterton's narrative poem, but Ms Dowdy is able to bring a great deal that is all her own. I found particularly notable and ironic the manner in which she addressed the reaction of Antwerp anabaptists after the battle and King Philip's response. I would say that Ms Dowdy perhaps gives less credit than do traditional sources to Don Juan of Austria's role in subsequent Hapsburg military affairs, but this approach is interesting, even if you disagree with it. In short, an interesting and enlightening approach to an valuable topic.

4-0 out of 5 stars Barney Goes to the Dentist
This is a great book for your child to get to see the inside of the Dentist Office and not be afraid because Barney is there. Great tool for the teachers or Dental Professional to use to talk with small children for Childrens Dental Health Month. (Febuary)

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book for a child's first visit to the dentist.

Lauri Keller, the much-applauded creator of the wacky, wonderful The Scrambled States of America, traces one school day in a classroom of teeth in Open Wide: Tooth School Inside. Fortunately, when Dr. Flossman takes attendance, all 32 teeth are present to take the pledge: "And to the gums on which we stand, strong and healthy, with toothbrushes and toothpaste for all." The day proceeds with an anatomy lesson (illustrating dentin, enamel, pulp, etc.), which is interrupted only momentarily when Carl Canine badmouths a little molar (hurting his feelings even though he has a hard enamel shell on the outside). Sally Incisor then shares her report on primary teeth ("Babies don't even need teeth. You never see them eating corn on the cob or anything"), and the Tooth Fairy makes a guest appearance, offering molar-coaster rides and bemoaning the whole "under-the-pillow" idea, which causes her to fear suffocation.

Lunch is a messy affair--complete with food fights--and when it is over, none of the teeth feel like brushing. Of course, an in-depth lesson on tooth decay and cavities ignites a flurry of flossing, gargling, and brushing. As in Scrambled States (which is a must-see if you haven't yet read it), every clever, colorful collage bubbles with activity, hilarious asides between the teeth, and tiny details that you may miss the first time through. Two quizzes conclude the book, posing questions such as "George Washington had teeth made out of rocks and twigs. T or F" and "Tooth decay is caused by a) bacteriaand germs, b) slugs and worms, c) bad perms." Kids will never ignore their teeth again--and when they do take a look in the mirror they may see a smiling tooth face peering back, begging for a good brush. (Ages 5 to 9) -- Karin Snelson ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great fun for adults, also
I am an adult, but I'm a big fan of Laurie Keller's two books. "Open Wide" is an hilarious, creative book about teeth which I thoroughly enjoyed even though, the day before, I had myself been through a painful dentist appointment. I knwo a couple of young children who read and loved Laurie's first book, "The Scrambled States of America" and I would imagine children will get a huge kick out of this one also. Her depiction of an elementary school environment, even though it's one filled with students who are teeth, is very accurate and observant and her illustrations are wonderful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific !
Laurie Keller has a real winner here. Silly, funny, with humorfor everyone in the family and a lesson and message about teeth yourkids will never forget. There's even a fun quiz at the end that kids will love. The colorful, clever illustrations compliment the text and add to the joy of this book. You'll be reading this story over and over again. There's so much going on in Open Wide Tooth School Inside, your kids will never tire of it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book, But It's No "Scrambled States"
My 4-year-old and I have really enjoyed Keller's book, "The Scrambled States of America". I ordered this title in hopes of getting a similar home run.

The artwork is great, and Keller's highly non-linear style is still a big hit with my son. For me, though, the storyline doesn't quite gel. Very little is happening in "Open Wide: Tooth School Inside". Instead, we get a recitation of facts about teeth, with large doses of humor thrown in.

Don't get me wrong, Nebraska. It's still a good book, just not up to the greatness that was "The Scrambled States of America".

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Book!
My Kids and I all enjoy this book many times! My son was the first one I read it to (5yrs old) and after that first reading, he could correctly answer all the questions at the end. I'm bringing it to show our dentist. The best kids book (I learned some things, too) about teeth that we've read!

5-0 out of 5 stars It's our Bedtime Story Book
I am a school nurse that teaches oral hygiene. I use this book constantly for every grade level, even in my pregnant minor program. My 5 year old daughter loves this book as her bedtime story book, and has learned more about teeth then most adults. She loves the little side-talk of the different teeth. A fun and entertaining way to introduce oral hygiene and the ramifications of not brushing. I even gave a copy to my dentist! Julie Hart-Lawson RN/ San Diego City Schools ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for all ages!!!
Betty Pace should be the foremost author in children's health books. She takes a subject like inner ear problems and makes it not only enjoyable, but interesting to read! I highly recommend this book to anyone who has a son or daughter who may need any type of medical treatement, or to anyone who wants to see how to explain something on the level of a child. I'll be looking forward to seeing more books from this author in the near future!

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book to read to a child before ear tube surgery
This is a perfect book to help ease the mind of a child that might be frightened of ear tube surgery. Just have mom or dad or both curl up in a comfortable chair with the child that is about to have ear tube surgery, get the book and read together. This should remove a lot of fear a smallchild might have.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent to prepare kids for the hospital experience.
This book explains in a child friendly way what to expect from the first visit to the doctor, through the entire hospital experience. It is done in a way to make children anticipate the experience with joy, not fear.Iwould highly recommend this book for anyone with a child about to facehospitalization for ear tubes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Child-friendly explanation of having ear tube surgery
The story is very child-friendly and presentsChris getting ear tubes in a non-threatening way - for children as young as 3 years old.The story allows a child to see what will happen at the hospital - going to sleep and be able to hear better. The story made my daughter very comfortable about going to the hospital and having her ear tubes. It made what could have been a scary experience be exactly the reverse. In addition, the story talks about after surgery -wearing ear plugs. My daughter accepts her ear plugs much better because of Chris's experience.I highly recommend this book for parents of young children who are having ear tubes for not only a 1st time but also the 2nd, 3rd or 4th time. ... Book Description

Sixteen-year-old Lucy Szabo is Undead -- at least according to her own theories about vampirism. Lucy believes that the first vampires -- with their pale skin, long teeth, and uncontrollable thirst -- were dying diabetics. And she should know. She's a diabetic herself.

When Lucy becomes involved with Draco -- a self-proclaimed "real" vampire she meets in the Transylvania Internet chat room -- her world begins crashing down around her. Caught up in late-night parties and Goth culture, she begins to lose control of her grades, relationships, and health. Lucy realizes she needs to make some important choices, and fast. But it may already be too late. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Sweetbook
Lucy Szabo can barely remember a time when she wasn't dependent on her insulin shots. Diagnosed with diabetes at the age of six, Lucy has grown up feeling like outsider. She seperates herself from her peers (deeming herself a freak) and she even visualizes herself as a vampire of sorts.

First, let me admit that I did not find Lucy to be a likeable character. She is very self-centered and acts as if she is the only person with medical problems. In fact, there is even another girl with diabetes in the book and all Lucy does is make fun of her and scoff at her chipper attitude. Lucy is negative, she contradicts herself, she believes herself to be better than everybody else.
And yet, while she isn't a likeable character, I find Lucy to be a very believable one. Hautman does an excellent job allowing the reader to see the inner workings of Lucy's mind and allowing for the reader to witness Lucy as she struggles to come to terms with her disease.

"Sweetblood" is a great insight to diabetes, with a modern twist including Goth subculture. Granted, readers expecting your cookie cutter vampire novel might be a little bit disappointed. However I find "Sweetblood" to be a Funny, eye-opening, and inspiring read that should not be missed.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent book about a girl in the goth/vampire subculture
Goths. Vampires. Diabetics. You will find all of that and more in Pete Hautman's book Sweetblood. The book calls itself a "vampire novel," but really what it's about is a diabetic girl, Lucy, who's theory that slowly dying diabetics in the Middle Ages were the original vampires leads her to take an interest in people who call themselves vampires and the vampire/goth subculture. The book is well written, and although some teenagers may not be able to appreciate it, I certainly did.
Lucy is sixteen, and has been diabetic since she was six years old. Her theory is that before the discovery of insulin, diabetics must have been seen as demons or as possessed in some way. She takes an interest in vampires and goes to vampire websites and the Transylvania chat under the alias Sweetblood, where she talks with others who share her interest and who consider themselves vampires. However, when the story begins, around the start of the school year, her grades have been deteriorating. When she writes a paper (that was supposed to be about what she wanted to do as an adult) on her theory of diabetics being vampires and goes into great detail comparing vampire legends and the symptoms of untreated diabetes, her concerned teacher calls a meeting with the school councilor (who she has already been to see multiple times) and Lucy's parents. The result: Lucy's computer is taken away from her. Apparently her parents think it dangerous for her to be on vampire websites all the time. Bored and angry, Lucy must find other things to do.
The cute, goth new guy in school has taken an interest in Lucy. One night, when she is supposed to be grounded, Lucy meets him for coffee. While at the coffeehouse, Lucy is introduced to an older member of the goth scene who knows the guy she's with. As she hangs out at the coffeehouse more, she gains an invitation to the party of one Wayne, who she has never met before. When Wayne turns out to be Draco, a member of the Transylvania chat who has been tracking Lucy, things start to get strange.
One of the best things about this book is that it gets the facts straight. A lot of times, people go on what they assume the goth subculture is. Pete Hautman has gotten his facts straight, making references to goth bands like The Sisters of Mercy and Concrete Blonde, as well as describing the various styles of goth found at Wayne's party.
Sweetblood is well written and very hard to put down. The end of every chapter leaves you wanting more, and there is never a dull moment; even the moments dull for the main character are made up for with good descriptions. As one who was once very in to vampire chats and the goth subculture, I could fully appreciate Pete Hautman's Sweetblood.

4-0 out of 5 stars Sweetblood Review
The book I read is a vampire novel named SweetBlood by author Pete Hautman. I liked this book a lot. The book had a very good plot. At the end of each chapter, the author would always leave you hanging. The book is about a girl who has an interest in vampires. She is a teen trying to fit in. All the real trouble starts when she loses something. Although I can't say what it is, it is something we could all do without. She loses it because of bad grades in school. This leads to some things you wouldn't expect. Because she has diabetes she ends up having many insulin reactions. All of this builds up to a superb finale. I recommend this book to anybody except people who do not like vampires. So if you like vampire novels, this is the book for you. Four out of five stars because of some dull parts in the book such as a lot of boring detail of her going to a café or when she is walking to the mall. The book has strong of word choice, but sometimes the description is just TOO MUCH!

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your time reading this book.....
This is a book about a girl that is diabetic and how she lives her life. She does think she is a vampire and she talks to people that think they are vampires. In the begging of the book she is a girl that is totally into a gothic way. Then in the end she changes into a totally different girl that you would not think of her doing. The thing I like about this book is how she talks about her diabetes and how she is living in school with the diabetes. I also like how she changes into a whole different person and how her personality changes. I really hated a lot of things in this book. The most things I hated were when she was talking on a chat room on the web, and she was talking to people that thought they were vampires and she called them stupid. I also hate when she acts like a vampire.
This book is not like any books that I have read before.

5-0 out of 5 stars So Glad I Happened to Pick This Up...
I could not put this book down--and I'm 30 years old!:D This is such an amazingly accurate portrayal of the everyday life of a teenaged girl. It captures Lucy's voice and mind so beautifully, I feel she is someone I've known. And each of the other characters is someone you could imagine from your own high school, not the usual sitcom caricatures. The concept is very original and utterly believable. And all of the subtle references and subplots are skillfully woven together by the end to give the whole thing a wonderful cohesion and sense of "relevance". The subtle, wry humor throughout is delightful. A beautiful portrait of a lovely young girl struggling to come to terms with her lot in life and find out what she truly values. Go. Read.:) ... Kids who go to the doctor for a routine checkup shouldn't worry toomuch. Unless they accidentally throw a paper airplane ("zwish!") into thedoctor's eye. Or forget to wear underwear. ("Oops!") Or kick the doctor in thechin when she's testing knee reflexes with a little rubber hammer. ("Clack!")The beloved Froggy is his usual out-of-control self in Dr. Mugwort's office, andpreschoolers pondering an impending doctor visit will be relieved to know itwon't be too bad, might be fun, and could even involve a gold star or alollipop. Jonathan London and illustrator Frank Remkiewicz disarm their youngreaders with giggles in books from Froggy Learns to Swim to Froggy Goes to School. Froggy'ssilly sound effects and slapstick antics guarantee a lively read-aloud. This book was a gift to our daughter (nearly three). She loved the Froggy Goes to Bed book and I defended Froggy's misbehavior because that book kept her attention and was a favorite. However, Froggy Goes to the Doctor went beyond our line. Our daughter has never feared the doctor. After her two year check up she had to have blood drawn. She didn't flinch, and afterward she said she had "fun".I am very cautious that she does not "learn" to be afraid of doctors.I am less concerned about Froggy's misbehavior as I am about his fear of getting a shot.We hid the book, out of sight out of mind...

5-0 out of 5 stars If You Like Froggy Books, This is One of the Better Ones
I feel a little sheepish giving this 5 stars. Frankly, I don't much care for the Froggy series. Here's the truth, though - it doesn't matter what I think. My 5-year-old loves all the Froggy books, and they serve as great motivators for him to continue learning to read.

I'd recommend this book over most of the other Froggy books. Froggy's misbehavior is (thankfully) not a major topic here, and the book conveys a useful lesson about doctors. Recommended.

This incredible book from Fisher Price was a life saver for my 30 month old twins!Their first visit to the dentist, just after 24 months, was a nightmare! This time, however, we read this book several times and talked about it a lot before going. They were so excited and knew just what would happen.Even the hygenist and the dentist were impressed! We took the book with us just in case, too!

I highly recommend this book for anyone with young children.

I gave this book to my six year old daughter as a Christmas gift. We read it together as a bedtime story and her first reaction was : "I want you to read it again right now!". In fact, she would have liked me to read it several more times that night. It is a beautifully illustrated, lovingly written story about a special dog who helps sick children get well. It touched each of us emotionally without being falsely sentimental. We both found it very interesting that it is based on true events. I certainly recommend it for children from 3 to 8 and feel older children would also find the story interesting. It is a wonderful book to give as a gift. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Just GoingTo The Dentist
This book is about a kid who goes to the dentist for a normal check-up and when it's his turn they go through the check-up and he spots a cavity. He gets scared then he does it and it's all over with. I would recommend this to an 8-year-old. Going to the dentist isn't always bad.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not such a great book
I found this book to be a little too much for my 4 year old. I did not like the fact that the book says 'it will not hurt' and shows a picture of a needle for novacaine shot. I realize the shots are probably inevitable, but telling a child it will not hurt is unrealistic. I should have read the content before I purchased the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Are you afraid of going to the dentist?
Hi! My name is Monica and I was wondering if you liked going to the dentist? I love going to the dentist especially when I get my teeth cleaned it feels really cool. In the story " Just Going To The Dentist," Little Critter has to go to the dentist. He is so afraid to go. But is mama critter makes him go. So they go to the dentist. When they get there they go into the room and....Oppps!!! I guess you'll have to find out when you check out the book " Just Going To the Dentist," By Mercer Mayer. I really enjoyed this book. It was very adventurous and fun. It really applied to me when I was at a young age in life. Now that I go to the dentist all the time, I am so used to it that I'm not scared anymore. I hope you make great effort to check this book out, cause if I liked the book than I really think that you will like it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Do You Like Going To The Dentist?
Hey! My name is Monica and I was wondering if you liked to go to the dentist? I love going to the dentist because it feels nice and good when I am all finished getting my teeth cleaned. In the story " Just Going To The Dentist," Little Critter is the main character. Little Critter has an appointment to go to the dentist. Now Little Critter was so afraid to go to the dentist. He has to go though other wise he could be in big trouble. So Mama Critter and Little Critter go to the dentist. And guess what happens? Man I wish I could tell you but you'll have to find out when you check out the book " Just Going To The Dentist." I thought that this book was a really cute and adventurous story. This actually happens in reality to young kids. This story has very good content and is really easy to understand at a young age. The pictures in the book help a lot in being visual. Now the story would be hard to understand without pictures in it. Now do you agree with that? I would strongly recommend this story to kids that enjoy stories that are fun, interseting and cool all the way. To find out just how cool this story is, check it out and be ready for a fast and rough rollercoaster ride.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent preparation for the first trip to the dentist
Mayer has done it again! Delightful pictures and simple text prepare any child for their first dentist trip. 5-0 out of 5 stars Corduroy Goes to the Doctor
This is an excellent book to prepare your child before going to the doctor. Many children are afraid of the unexpected. Being in the medical field, I find that children who are prepared beforehand do better. This book describes Corduroy's day at the doctor. It gives vivid pictures of him entering the office, being weighed, and having his throat and ears examined. It also shows the doctor listening to Corduroy's heart while giving him breathing instructions! At the end Corduroy gets a shot as the doctor explains, "We don't want you to get sick." My daughter (age 3) is great at the doctor's office and I really owe a lot to it to Corduroy! My daughter loves Corduroy!

5-0 out of 5 stars A very helpful book
This short and simple book has been very helpful to me. My 1 year old son has to go to the doctor VERY OFTEN for ear infections. He seems to relate well to seeing what Corduroy does there, and we talk about when he does to the doctor and they do those things. I think it would be helpful to explain to children who don't have to go often as well, in knowing what to expect. The pictures are great, and the words are simple and to the point for young children. ... Read more
