5-0 out of 5 stars We Loved This Story!
This story is about a boy named Ira who is going to sleep over his friend's house. Ira is nervous about it because he still sleeps with a teddy bear and he thinks Reggie will make fun of him. Ira finds out that he isn't the only one with a teddy bear. We liked this story because it had a lot of funny parts. You should read this book because the story is fun and the pictures are really good.

5-0 out of 5 stars wow...
just the memories of this book bring tears to my eyes...it was one of my favorites when i was young. it's a great story. loved it.

5-0 out of 5 stars As a teacher I give this an A+.
This book is wonderful. As a second grade teacher, I read it so often to my class that the paper back book pages have fallen out. I'm purchasing the hard back version now.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a sweet book!
I love this book! I begged my mom to read it to me over and over again when I was little. Now I am going to be a teacher and I plan on having this book in my classroom at all times! It would be an excellent book to read to a child going on his/her first sleep over. But, actually, I think anyone (child or adult) would enjoy this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best read-aloud books
Great book to read to the family at bedtime. It is definitely on of the best books to read aloud. You are forced to sound like a seven-year-old boy as you read. Addresses the fear of what one's best friend might think when he finds out that you still sleep with a teddy bear. ... Read more

Book Description

What is courage? Certainly it takes courage for a firefighter to rescue someone trapped in a burning building, but there are many other kinds of courage too. Everyday kinds that normal, ordinary people exhibit all the time, like "being the first to make up after an argument," or "going to bed without a nightlight." Bernard Waber explores the many varied kinds of courage and celebrates the moments, big and small, that bring out the hero in each of us. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I just bought 3 copies
A friend in Maine showed me this book, which she'd just bought for all her grandchildren and children, when I was visiting her last week. I promptly ordered one for each of my adult children to give them next Christmas.
It's a honey of a book, detailing courage in all its permutations. Written as a children's book, it could leap the gap (like Pooh, and Where the Wild Things Are, and many of Dr. Seuss' books) into classic adult enjoyment status.
Give it a try.

5-0 out of 5 stars We're All Heroes.....
As Bernard Waber tells us on the first few pages of this sweet and engaging little book... "There are many kinds of courage. Awesome kinds. And everyday kinds. Still, courage is courage-whatever kind..." You don't have to have a dangerous job, like a firefighter or policeman to be courageous, and you don't have to climb Mt Everest, or fly into outer space, or explore the depths of the ocean. We all show how brave we are in special ways, every day. Courage is taking off the training wheels and finally learning to ride your bike, going to bed without a nightlight, and being the first to make up after an argument. Courage is getting a new haircut, never telling a secret entrusted to only you, and walking right up to the new kid and introducing yourself. You're courageous if you taste the new vegetable first before you make a disgusting face, or if you read the whole mystery without turning to the last page to see who did it. And sometimes it takes courage to start all over again, or hold on to your dream.....Mr Waber's simple, clever text is enhanced by his playful and humorous artwork, and youngsters are sure to see both the truth and a little of themselves on each page. Perfect for kids 4-8, Courage is a heartwarming and utterly charming book, sometimes poignant, often uplifting, but always stated in a positive way, that should get little ones thinking and open interesting discussions. "Courage is what we give to each other."

5-0 out of 5 stars Courage gives confidence.
My seven year old son received this book upon entering his third different school in three years. This book has been a valuable asset in teaching him to believe in himself and try something new. It addresses the little things that as adults we tend to forget were tramatic to children. I have given this book as gifts and have had very positive feedback. My son's school used this book as a basis for second graders to create thier own "books" about what courage is to them. I recommend it highly for confident children and those that could use a little additional reinforcment. A great "you did it!" gift.

2-0 out of 5 stars just o.k.
"Courage" is just o.k. Neither I nor my son found the pictures that compelling. And we both seemed to think the book was longer than it needed to be. Nice premise, but - somehow - lacking. ... Read more

Lyle the crocodile lives in a house on East 88th Street in New York City. He likes it there, and his hosts, the Primms, like having him around--he helps young Joshua with his homework, jumps-rope with the neighborhood kids, and browses through antique shops with Mrs. Primm. Much to the affable reptile's dismay, however, he makes his neighbor's cat Loretta crazy, which in turn makes Mr. Grumps, Loretta's owner, even crazier. One day, Mrs. Primm and Lyle are shopping, when Lyle--through no real fault of his own--ends up infuriating department-store bigwig Mr. Grumps who turns red and blue and purple with rage. This unfortunate eruption lands the rollicking reptile in the Central Park zoo where Lyle fights back his crocodile tears. In an elaborate sequence of events, Lyle finds himself back with the Primms on East 88th Street, a neighborhood hero, and, startlingly, even a friend of the mistrustful cat Loretta. Bernard Waber--creator of The House on East 88th Street--charms young readers again with this endearing, whimsical 1965 classic, perfectly complemented by his simple, sketchy, comical illustrations. 5-0 out of 5 stars A Book to Remember
I am now 21 years old and I can still remember the opening line to this tape. The Lyle books are wonderful for children and this tape is a great way to put your child to sleep. The Lyle books are truly one of my greatest childhood memories!

5-0 out of 5 stars A crocodile just as sweet as Pogo's Albert the Alligator
A picture book with more backstory than you could possibly imagine. For many, the delightful "Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile" is a perennial favorite. I, myself, had never read it before. When first we see Lyle, he's standing in the center of Central Park (this is most definitely a New York based book) feeding the ducks. Occupying a swank apartment (you should see his bathroom!) with the Primm family, Lyle is everyone's favorite crocodile. He's polite, helpful, and wonderful at double dutch. The ever dour Mr. Grumps next door has problems with the beloved Lyle. Mr. Grumps continually threatens to send Lyle away, but it isn't until an unfortunate department store incident that Mr. Grumps makes good his threats. In the end, however, all turns out for the best and Lyle is reunited with his loving family.

There's a certain amount of suspension of disbelief involved in this tale. Apparently it is not a particularly odd thing to live with a crocodile. I was especially taken with Mrs. Primm's relationship with the lovely reptile. The two do their shopping together and take a turn about the ice skating rink. (...) Mr. Grumps refuses to even speak with Lyle until a fortunate accident towards the book's finale. And in the end, it's just a lovely book. The writing is superb. The illustrations adorable and evocative all at once. The book has CLASSIC writ large all over it. If you've any wit or intelligence about you (and you wish to pass such virtues onto your darling children) pick up the wonderful "Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile" immediately.

5-0 out of 5 stars You have to read tis book - school project / Mr. Boon
Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile by Bernard Waber is a really good book. It's about a crocodile that lives on East 88th street with Mr. and Mrs. Primm and ther son Joshua. He helps them out with many things and is very loved. There is a man named Mr. Grumps that lives two houses down. He has a pet cat named Loretta and Lyle always tries to get her to like him because she seems so scared at the sight of him. Mr. Grumps thinks that Lyle's causing problems so he gets papers authorizing Lyle to be sent to the city zoo. While Lyle is in the zoo he is rescued by Signor Valenti. He takes him to visit his house on East 88th street. While there, he notices that Mr. Grumps' house is on fire. He rescues him and Loretta and then everyone is happy again because everything is put back together.
I think this is a book for children that are already quite a bit into the reading process. There are some pretty big words. Other than that, I think this book is very well put together and that alot of you out there will enjoy it very much. I highly recamend that you read this book with your children. "With", meaning that they defiently need a chance to have fun with it also. This book is highly recamended by me.

5-0 out of 5 stars good for children
this series is good for young people. give it a try!

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Adorable........
..............kids are guaranteed to love Lyle and his adventures! They will also learn from this story how to overcome misfortune, difficult situations and about the perils of pre-judging others as they watch Lyle become a hero. Set in Manhattan, NY, Lyle is loved by his human family, but greatly feared by a neighbor and his timid cat. This ultimately lands him in trouble (and in the city zoo) despite his best efforts to make friends with the little cat. In the end though, Lyle proves his good nature by performing a heroic deed that wins over absolutely everyone, including the little cat. Kids will respond to Lyle's persistence, his goodness and his incredible bravery.

This book is written on approximately a second grade reading level. Young readers will enjoy the language in this book, its climb to a climax and its victorious ending. Additionally, the illustrations are lovely in their simplicity. Kids will get a kick out of Lyle! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A charming children's classic
I first read Bernard Waber's The House on East 88th Street as a child and was capitivated by Lyle the Crocodile. How I loved this story about a bright green crocodile living in a bathtub in a New York City brownstone.Though frightened at first, the Primm family is won over by their housemate. Lyle is amazing, he takes out the trash, brings in the milk, (this book was first published in 1962!)helps around the house, and loves a nice, hot bath complete with Turkish caviar! (We could all use a Lyle) The story of Lyle does not end here; Waber went on to write seven more titles about this lovable creature. Out of all the Lyle books, this is his best-known. This charming children's classic is suitable for small children between the ages of four and eight.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great series
When I got pregnant with my son, my mother sent a box of old books she had saved from my childhood. The House in East 88th Street and Lyle and the Birthday Party were in the box. These two books have become favorites of my son as well as my husband and I. I'm glad to see that they are still in print, as I plan to purchase a few more from the series.

5-0 out of 5 stars The magical world of Lyle
The story of Lyle the crocodile who is discovered in the bathtub when Joshua and his family move into their new home. My mother first read this book to me when I was four years old. I am now 35! It is a truly wonderful childrens book. One of those that lingers in your memory as a world you inhabited as a child. Myself and my sisters adored the Lyle books and we are now buying them for our families. Endearing, amusing, full of the joys and sadnesses of life. Lyle is a childs world through a crocodiles eyes. Try them all. You and your children (of all ages) will love them!.

5-0 out of 5 stars A childhood favorite
I had a copy of this book when I was a child, and it was one of my favorites. I highly recommend this book to any parent with children, or any adults who wish they had children. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Moral
I think this is a good book to teach your children to accept people (or in this case, a talking crocodile) for who they are. It validates children's fears and handles normal feelings one might have with new friends moving in and playing with his or her existing friends. Yes, some might not feel the "I hate you" letters are appropriate. However, if your child is finding enjoyment in this book rather than hearing even more unappropriate language on Nick Jr., then I think they made the better choice! I loved it as a child, and my children love it!

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
After reading and enjoying Lyle Lyle Crocodile and The House on East 88th St, we were disappointed to find how uninspired this title was. It felt recycled and lacked the joyful flair of the other 2 books. In it, Lyle finds himself the recipient of hate letters. "I hate you" is a common refrain and they are signed "your enemy." The tone of the letters is really hostile and not appropriate for a children's book. This is especially true in this day and age where almost any threat has the potential to turn violent. Skip this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Lovable Book
When I was a Kid I used to love the Lyle, Lyle Crocodile books, especially this book, Lovable Lyle. I also used to have the tape with Gwen Verdon reading this one and two other Lyle Stories. This is easily one of the best Lyle books.

In this book, almost everybody loved Lyle the Crocodile until one day Clover Sue Hipple (a new friend to young Joshua Primm) started putting hate mail under Lyle's door. Nobody knew who was doing this, until one day Mrs. Primm caught the note writer and found out why she was angry with Lyle. She invited Clover's mother to meet Lyle, only to end the visit with the crocodile falling on both Mrs Hipple and Mrs Primm. Mrs Hipple threatened to have Lyle arrested. But at the beach the next week, Lyle saved Clover's life, and won over both Clover and her mother. This is such a wonderful book, and I will always remember it because it got me in trouble once when I was in the fifth grade for sending a hate letter to my little sister's friend after she hit me.

If you have children, then buy this book at once.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rich Cat Poor Cat ROCKS!!!
Thank you, Bernard Waber, for inspiring me to make a great band. I know this thing says I'm 12, but I'm really 16 and all, but this book was awesome, my friend Andrew read it to me five times a day for three weeks...it's given me the courage to keep going, no matter how tough it gets, because I know someone out there has it worse than me...

5-0 out of 5 stars Rich Cat Poor Cat
This is the best book I have ever read in my entire life! It touched my heart in so many ways. I realized that there is so much good in the world. I am so happy that Gwen found a good home. I have read this book 184 times and every time gets better! Thank you so much!

4-0 out of 5 stars School*Project!
I enjoyed reading the book Rich Cat, Poor Cat! It was about these two cats one is a street cat and is poor, scubby, dirty, no one pays attention to him, and he has to find his own way to live, his own shelter, food, and the other cat is a indoor cat that lives with a very rich family that cleans, feeds, give shelter, and takes care ofhim! Yes, I think this book is great for kids because it makes you think about all the cats out there that don't have homes! I think children would like to read this book because it teaches you things about cats and you should take care of every pet you own!

A hippopotamus is wallowing very happily in her favorite mudhole until a snooty rhinoceros ambles along and tells her she looks ridiculous because she doesn't have a horn on her nose.So begins Bernard Waber's hilarious tale of an insecure hippo, who suffers from a severe inferiority complex until she realizes she's just fine the way she is, "a big, fat, wonderful hippopotamus".Waber is a great children's author and this book provides a message that any preschooler can relate to and understand, that everyone is special and unique in his or her own way.The ink and spatter-paint illustrations, in black, red and green, are fun to look at and help carry the story along.Kids from 3 to 6, and their parents too, will love this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Depends on who's reading...
My daughter is 2 years old and we've had this book two days. She listens very intently as I read it. The story has just the right amount of repetition to reel her in and allow her to "catch on". I'm sure this will be a book which she requests often.
So, why only four stars? It really is monotonous for a parent who reads books to their children often. Parents who find themselves drained by the end of repetitive books should simply not introduce this one until the child can read on his/her own.
To sum it up...this book is captivating, humorous, and easy to read if you are 2 - 5 years old. Above that, you may find yourself feeling guilty about hiding it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific read-aloud
This is a wonderful book! Children and adults alike enjoy the silliness and the repetition. Similar to The Mitten, but lots more fun!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
We borrowed this book from the library for my 3 1/2 year old daughter. My daughter has now memorized most of the book, and she loves to "read" it to the rest of the family. She laughes the whole way through it, and she actually looks forward to bedtime when the whole family sits down and reads it together. We will definately be adding it to our home library.

5-0 out of 5 stars SO FUNNY!! WE ALL LAUGHED. FUN TO READ!!

A marvelous turn of phrase and a very simple concept make this a sure hit with any 3,4 or five year old I know. There is some rhyming and a lot of repetition and a fun concept that the young ones can grasp from the very first visitor that Bearsie Bear gets. The hardest part of reading the book is keeping a straight enough face to finish the page - BIG Smiles and lot's of laughs. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Whole family loves this book
My 3-year-old loves this book. Your child can find the mouse in the lovely drawings of the various areas of the hotel. And the story is wonderful: when a mouse shows up at a snooty hotel, the staff "solves" the problem by hiring a consulting firm that can't find the mouse and gets everyone to chant "there's no mouse here." Even the mouse joins in. (Kind of like real life in the business consulting world, but more fun!) We enjoy reading this book, too, because you can "play" the various characters with dramatic flare.

4-0 out of 5 stars A sly mouse outwits the staff at the Park Snoot Hotel
This is a wonderful book for children ages 2+. A sly mouse hides under the nose of one hotel staff member after another, then bests the "upscale exterminators" Hyde & Snyde.

My 4 year old loves finding the "hidden" mouse again and again, making this a top-ten bedtime story that never seems to get old.

Cute illustrations. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars We Love Lyle
This is our first (and favorite) Lyle book. It is a cute story, enjoyable for the whole family. Of course, it has a happy ending, and Lyle is the hero. Although it is rather long, my 2 1/2 year old has memorized it, and knows if I miss a word. I highly recommend it. We can't wait to get started with the other Lyle books, and hope that they are as good. ... Read more
