5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful day and/or bedtime story for parents & child!
My three and a half year old and I both love Cowboy Bunnies. The illustrations are charming and the rhymes and daily events hold the attention of our three year old son more than most books. In fact, we're going to center his upcoming birthday around the Cowboy Bunnies and this will be the other children's giveaway.

5-0 out of 5 stars As Sweet a Bedtime Story as You Will Find
Cowboy Bunnies is written in a gentle, rocking rhyme with musical accompaniment perfectly suited to the romanticized ideal many children have of western life. This song-story is one of the few I never tired of reading or hearing, even though I tape-recorded it to play four times in a row. My daughter learned about cowboy and cowgirl costumes, frontier life, cowboy slang, and musical instruments. The end of the story puts cowboy bunnies to bed as the music slows from gently romping to a sleepy lullaby. I consider this book a masterpiece for children ages 2 to 6.

4-0 out of 5 stars My two-year-old loved this book!
We will definitely be purchasing this one...it was a big hit at our house! Adorable little bunnies rhyming their way through their day.

4-0 out of 5 stars Lots of fun-good rhymes and cute pictures
I thought that this lovely, light little book was excellent-the kind I enjoy as well as my kids and grandkids. The story about a day in the life of a cowboy bunnies is told in rhymes, that are fun and easily remembered. The pictures are done on pieces of wood slats that are different lengths--probably like some of the fences the bunnies mend. The end to a cowboy bunnys day is not to be missed. It is a sweet book. ... Read more

Book Description

Cowboy Gene loves his eight cows, and Cowgirl Sue loves her eight cows, and both of them like the fence that keeps their pastures--and cows--apart. But then a tornado blows through and takes the fence with it. The cows are mixed up, and Sue and Gene are in a muddle. Will they ever be able to figure out whose cows are whose?
An all-singing, all-dancing, hard-riding, and high-romancing story of a lasso-tossin' cowgirl, a tough-as-jerky cowboy, and the two herds of do-si-do-ing, polka-prancing, high-stepping heifers that bring them together.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sixteen Cows is aswesome!
I am not sure who enjoys this book more...me or my children! I love reading the rhyming verses and getting my kids involved by "Mooing". It's fun, the illustrations are great, and it's easily become a favorite book in our house!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars A rootin'-tootin' good read!
"Sixteen Cows" is one of those rare children's books that is not only fun for the kiddies, but may actually be more amusing for the adult reading it.

Lonely Cowboy Gene and lovely Cowgirl Sue share a fence, but despite their neighborliness and like herds of eight humorously named bovines, a bit of competition keeps the two at odds. The deus ex machina of a tornado rips down the fence and the cows do the rest, intermingling hopelessly, while refusing to hear the calls to come back to their respective sides. Forced to cooperate, the rival cowpokes finally drop the competition and work together. Can love be far behind?

Clearly there is plenty to like in the book. Many kids' picture books fall down in the text, but not here. Lisa Wheeler's long rhymes capture the reader's heart and flow nicely, complemented well by the sprawling, glowing, watercolor images of Kurt Cyrus. Together there is a synergy that makes this book oddly compelling. Little humorous touches abound - such as the cow names and the items tossed up by the tornado - that may mean more to adults than kids, so while my toddler son likes the book, his dad enjoys it even more. (At the cost of a star, the backstory of the book may be lost on the very young, who may not fully grasp love stories and weddings.)

With its large illustrations and silly/sweet story, this paean to the prairie is clearly designed to be read out loud and often. So pick out your best West Texas drawl, mosey on up to your favorite lil' pardner, and share the fun of "Sixteen Cows."

5-0 out of 5 stars A Rootin' Tootin' Good Time.....
Meet Cowboy Gene Biddle and Cowgirl Sue Waddle, neighbors and cow lovers, living peacefully on the western prairie. Each went about their daily ranch chores until it was time to call their cows home. Then with a loud and strong voice, each would sing their "come-home song," calling every cow by name. "Now Waddle Ranch was on a hill and sat right next to Biddle./And where each ranch's pasture met, a fence ran down the middle./So Biddle cows and Waddle cows were not in any danger/of getting mixed at grazing time and dining with a stranger." That is, until a fierce Arkansas wind blew that old fence "plumb clean away." Now with their cows all mixed up, what are a couple of cowpokes going to do to separate their herds and bring them home..... Lisa Wheeler's spirited and engaging, happily ever after, good-time story, complete with western dialogue, begs to be read aloud. Her entertaining, rhyming text is full of energy, humor, and wild west fun. Kurt Cyrus' bold and busy artwork captures the story beautifully, and is rich in expressive and charming detail. Together this duo have authored a playful and silly "love story" that is sure to keep your little cowpokes smiling and giggling to the very last page. So find out how sixteen cows finally brought these two lonely ranchers together, and enjoy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Romantic fun!
Our family loves this book! The rhyming text is an absolute delight to read aloud, and the story line is so much fun. The bridesmaid cows are hilarious. (Makes me want to go out and buy a cow!) This book will be read over and over again in our house. YEEHAW!

5-0 out of 5 stars ***SIXTEEN STARS***
Sixteen Cows is full of high-steppin' fun! Cowboy Gene and Cow Girls Sue's herds of cows get all mixed up one afternoon when a twister blows their fences down. Hilarity ensues as these two ranchers try to call their cows home. Lisa Wheeler's rhyming cattle calls are a hoot. My kids love reciting all of the clever cow names... "Sunflower! Baby Face! Button Eyes! Charlotte Grace! Jelly Roll! Peekaboo! Cinderbox! Bobbie Lou!"

Kurt Cyrus's beautiful, rich illustrations are breathtaking and add to the fun of this wild western lovestory.

A moo-sical tale not to be missed! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Sadly can't recommend this book
Although the writing is not very good it makes up for it by having a story that goes nowhere and has no real ending. Being a mother of two black boys I am alway looking for books that have black charactors in them--so I was quite pleased to buy a black cowboy book for them. This books disappoints in almost everyway. The purple prose is so overwrought that you feel as though you are reading a new line of pulp romances for children. The story involves an ex-slave enslaving wild horses while wishing he himself could leave this life and let his horse ride free into the distant horizon. In the midst of the book we are introduced to a lively wild colt only to have this colt immmediatly bit by a snake and die. It is this tragity that unsettles the herd of horses so that the mounted cowboy can take over as alpha horse and lead them to a waiting corral to be broken by the cheering white cowboys to whom he never speaks.
On the plus side the illustration's muddly watercolors are pleasing to the eye.

5-0 out of 5 stars Multiethnic Biographical Picture Book
This book is based on a true story about Bob Lemmons, a African American Cowboy. The pictures are outstanding representations of the story. It is a tale of a cowboy and his ability to ride with wild horses. He has the ability to lead the horses into thinking that he is one of them. Yes, a wild horse! This book could be used as an introduction to biographies or cowboys for young people. I would read it to 5-10 year old children. It is wonderfully written and would be a asset to any school or public library. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Joshua Loper Reveiw
This story is based after the civil war. Joshua and Doom are the only black people on the herd. They start out in the very back at drags but joshua moves to the front when one man slips up. There are some you could say sad parts like when joshuas horse dies but there are some good parts like when he is asked to go on another trail from texas to oregon.

3-0 out of 5 stars The Black Cowboy
Joshua Loper and seven others are driving a herd. Joshua is pushed harder by the captain of the drive because of his race.In the end Joshua is one of the best known herders and in the end gets paid the most money because of his hardwork. The captain and Joshua have more respect for one another at the end of their trip.
I have two opinions about the book good opinion it is very discriptive well written, exciting, and enjoyable. Another opinion is the rambledon and on about things I thought were less interesting to me

3-0 out of 5 stars OKAY BUT NOT GREAT!
I read all of this MY NAME IS AMERICA book. But like some of the other books in this series, it lacked excitement, suspense, and was not entirely accurate. I did not feel that the book was written by a 16 yr. old cowboy, though it kept my interest and gives children a feeling of what it was like to live in the 19th century. Much better and more accurate historical novels are THE JOURNEY OF LEROY JONES, A FUGITIVE SLAVE and THE DIARY OF A SLAVE GIRL, RUBY JO.

2-0 out of 5 stars named but not known
I bought "The Journal of Joshua Loper" hoping to read a true account of a cowboy. I did not have to reach page 158 to notice that the "journal is a work of fiction." While the library research was quite extensive, he missed the realities and language of the culture. No normal, free young man in a ranching environment would still be fumbling with a rope at 16. He would have a good handle on it by age 11.

I cannot imagine a South Texas cowboy of that era calling men "guys", black people "colored" and horses "animals". These terms are more midwestern, perhaps more educated than was common among the people of that time.

Finally within a week of Austin he has blacks picking cotton in May. Cotton might be picked in August, but even in Texas, cotton takes a while to mature after it is planted.

The one thing that saves this book is the humor. Otherwise, it is the college description of a description. For the real thing read the real thing, or better yet, do it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A good My Name is America book.
This was a good My Name is America book. Joshua is sixteen and he and his mother live and work on a ranch in 1871. His father is trying to find work somewhere else so they can all live together. Joshua is offered a job on a cattle drive so he takes it. The work is hard but he is proud to earn money for his mother. He keeps a journal thats tells what happens to him on the cattle drive. Oh, give her a home where the buffalo roam... In this playful ode to theWild West, a small girl would gladly exchange her big city life for big skycountry. Her three-piece-suited daddy seems bemused by her longings, patientlytrying to reclaim his converted hat and the white shag rug (with a suspiciouschaps-shaped hole cut out of it). But "I don't want to be a girly girl / Wholikes to sit and chat. / I just want to be a cowgirl, Daddy, / What's so wrongwith that?"

As our heroine gallops through her urban landscape, the clouds reflect herfantasies: 10-gallon hats, cattle, cacti, and wagons. A stray dog becomes herpiebald mare and two bananas are her six-shooters (her pet dog plays along inthe holdup, paws held high under the ironing board where Daddy placidly ironshis hat). Popular and talented author-illustrator team Jeanne Willis and TonyRoss salute big dreams in the warm, funny I Want to Be a Cowgirl. (Ages 4to 8) --Emilie Coulter ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars memories
This book brings back memories of my own childhood. I love to read it to children. It is full of imagination and fun. I also recommend 10,000 White Horses by Betsy Lee which you can get at Amazon.com.

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't Fence Me In.....
As our young narrator tells us in no uncertain terms, she's not interested in being a good girl, or a girly girl, sitting around with friends chatting, having tea parties, and playing with dolls. That's not her idea of fun. She definitely doesn't want to have her head in a book, or cook, clean, and sew. And as for high-rise living in the big city, well this young lady yearns to live on the prairie, breaking broncos, driving cattle, twirling her lasso, and sleeping under the stars. And that's just what she plans to do. "I've got my shiny spurs and boots,/I've got my cowgirl hat-/I'm leaving for the Wild, Wild West./Now what's so wrong with that?" Jeanne Willis and Tony Ross have authored an imaginative and humorous ode to the wild, wild west, with a very satisfying, feel-good ending, that's sure to become a read aloud favorite at your house. Ms Willis' rhyming text is entertaining and engaging, and begs to be read with a lilting western drawl. Mr Ross' charming and creative, cartoon-like artwork is rich in expressive, wild west images, and sharp eyed readers will enjoy poring over the illustrations and finding all the special and amusing details in each picture. Perfect for youngsters 3-7, I Want To Be A Cowgirl is a rootin' tootin' good time for little cowpokes with big dreams of their own.

5-0 out of 5 stars BOLD ILLUSTRATIONS ADD ANOTHER DIMENSION OF FUN
Under a city sky scuttled with cactus shaped clouds a dissatisfied little miss stoutly declares that she doesn't want to be a good girl, but a cowgirl instead. Surrounded by books and needlework in her 20th floor apartment she observes that good girls have absolutely no fun, and she does this in lilting rhyme: "I don't want to be a girly girl, Who likes to sit and chat. I just want to be a cowgirl, Daddy, What's so wrong with that?"

Vested and hatted Daddy thinks this is a really absurd ambition. Nonetheless, off his little daughter goes to Texas, to the wild, wild west. As it turns out, she doesn't go alone.

Tony Ross's inimitable boldly colored illustrations add another dimension of fun to this lively tale of a little girl's dream.

I think the funniest part was when Joe was saying "hello, waisachu, hello waisachu".

5-0 out of 5 stars The Good The Bad And The Goofy
Joe, Fred, and Sam are watching a western show, when suddenly they get sucked back into the book. The boys find themselves in a desert.Fred starts to hear something. It's a stampede. They are about to get hit by the stampede! Will anyone come to their rescue?
Some of the funny parts are when they almost get run over by the cows and at the end when you see the hole in Fred's hat.In one of the pictures the cow has 5 utters so tht was funny.I think you should read this book because it's just as funny as the first two Time Warp Trio books.

4-0 out of 5 stars Funny and Suspensful
"The Good The Bad And The Goofy" by Jon Scieszka is great for a short read (It is only fifty pages.) The fights between Fred (really athletic) and Sam (really smart) are hilarious. The book starts out in Joe's attic when Fred, Joe, and Sam wish to go back in time to see the cowboys and indians using Joe's magic book. The way the book works is they say a rhyme and end it with where they want to go. I won't tell you what happens when they get there because I don't want to spoil this great story! If you don't think that you'll like this book than don't pick it up because the book is so great that you won't be able to put it down. In short, if you like magic, comedy, and suspense then this is the book for you!

5-0 out of 5 stars Out of this World, and Back in Time!
The Time Warp Trio is a crazy trio of a spotlight man, a brainiac, and a human pig. "Mr. Spotlight" opens The Book. He says the goofiest rhyme you can think of to send his crew back in time to the cowboys. What do you know? It works! All of a sudden, this Time Warp Trio find themselves in a "twister" of adventure. Illustrations help you imagine the story clearly. If it gets boring for a page or two, don't panic; it will jump right back into adventure. Beware, it's dynamite laughs.

4-0 out of 5 stars Laugh out loud fun boys will love!
A magical birthday gift lands Fred, Sam and Joe smack-dab intothe middle of the old wild west, cowboys, Indians, and a ragingstampede. Authentic western flavor combines well with the history/adventure slant. The Time Warp Trio have to be brave, clever, and quick, very quick, on their feet to survive this adventure. Another book of the Time Warp Trio series, Jon Scieszka combines adventure, history, fantasy and humor in a compelling format that even reluctant readers will find hard to put down. ... Read more

Book Description

The War Between the States is over, and George McJunkin and his family are among the slaves who've won their freedom. Trouble is, the McJunkins still live in a tiny shack, and the money George's father brings in barely keeps food on the table. George's parents say the times are changing. They say someday in Rogers Prairie, Texas, there will be a school for black children. They say someday the family will own the blacksmith shop where George's father still toils for the man who used to own them. But George isn't so sure about someday. Between 1867 and 1895, more than five thousand black cowboys helped drive ten million cattle up the Chisholm Trail from Texas. One such cowboy was George McJunkin, who set out from Rogers Prairie for the adventure that would change his life. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wrango
Wrango is probably the best book you will ever read. It is a story about George McJunkin. He lives with his family until some bad guys come and he goes after Valdor a hired hand that works for them. He catches up with him and gets a job. They head out and George gets into a few mishaps trying to strangle some one, catching a buffalo, and getting bit by a rattle snake. Charlie the person he tried to strangle was in the river and is drowning, George gets his rope and saves him. This book taught me what a remuda was and a lot of other Spanish words. The book is based on a true story. This is why you should read it.

5-0 out of 5 stars OKay, but not too long , (sigh) , could been better.
Well, it's okay, very exctiing and action packed but a little too short. The book has lots of cool things like the glossary of spanish words and the mini biography of the real life person, George "Mcjunkin", who was in the story. Great for people who read before bed but not harry potter fans that like long books. This is more of a itermediate book. Well I really enjoyed it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Um okay good for bed readers
Well this book was pretty good. the beginng was okay then It got really excitning. The book is really good. I consider it to people who read before bed and maybe adventure seekers. It's pretty exiting with lots of juicy parts and suspens. The cool thing is ..........is the book was based on a true story so um the book sounds good but to hear it was true wow. But this is a great book for the price it's at and don't worry it's not as long as "other books".

3-0 out of 5 stars Ridem' Cowboy!
I selected this book because I loved how the author explained everything George did in so much detail. I was never really interested in riding, but now that I read this book I know so much more than I thought I could ever learn. Wrango taught me what a remuda was and more details on what horses are like. I recommend this book if you are interested in horeback riding and horses. ... Read more

Book Description

George Saunders could ride a horse before he could walk, rode his first cattle drive at the age of five, and got caught in his first stampede when he was ten. A Texas trail driver, he survived it all--freezing rains, lightning storms, desert dust, Kiowa and Comanche raiders, outlaw bandits, days and nights of herding without rest. He was a real American hero--a cowboy. D.J. Lightfoot has pored through Saunders's papers and interviewed his grandchildren to bring you the story of one of Texas's best-known cowmen. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Thrilling Tale
In my admiration for this fun, fascinating, fact-filled book, I yield to no authority but the eminent KIRKUS REVIEWS:

"George Saunders participated in many great cattle drives from 1871 to 1886; later, he spent years collecting and setting down his aging comrades' reminiscences. His career makes a thrilling tale, full of danger and hardship, stampedes, hostile Native Americans, rough country, and bad weather. Lightfoot also depicts Saunders's life between drives as a rancher and businessman, a solid citizen who rode with a vigilante group but also stepped forward to prevent a local massacre of Mexicans, at a time when racial tensions ran high. ...readers will get a clear idea of a cowhand's work, and of Saunders's important role in preserving the lore of a vanished era. Bibliography. (Biography. 10-12)"

5-0 out of 5 stars Light hearted and funny for all ages!!
We loved this book! Both my husband and I read this to our 5 yr. old son. We laughed out loud at the author's light hearted approach on learning to ride a two-wheel bike without training wheels! A first time on reading a story by this team of authors. I will seek other books by them in the future. My son loved everthing about this peticular book. ... Read more
