4-0 out of 5 stars YeeeHaw
While I have one reservation about this book, it is good fun. THe illustrations are charming and full of detail, and Matthew really saves the day from the cattle rustlers. He is a smart young hero, and the story helps you learn the names of cowboy gear such as chaps, bridle, spurs, etc. I also enjoyed the little desert creatures that seemed to follow Matthew around.

The only reservation I had was in the originality of the plot itself. The story of cows being rebranded has been done before. The best example of a rustler overlaying a portion of a brand over an existing brand to change it completely, is in the Donald Duck story from October 1948 "Sheriff of Bullet Valley". That is one of the most famous stories ever written and illustrated by the great Carl Barks, and it has been reprinted a few times over the years.
It is still a fun book, and well worth the very affordable price here at Amazon.com. []

5-0 out of 5 stars If you have a toddler who's a cowboy, get this book!
There seem to be very few books for toddlers on cowboys. This is the best, and will continue to be even if others are written. Matthew gets a cowboy outfit for his birthday, and then "becomes" (in his imagination) a real cowboy, solving a mystery and capturing the bad guys in a non-violent way (the only "weapon" is a lasso, and the only visible pistol remains in the sherrif's holster). The book is PC: the storekeeper is oriental, and cowhands Slim, Tex, and Pete seem (from the wonderful illustrations) to be a senior citizen, woman, and Afro-American, respectively. My two-and-a-half-year-old son, who believes himself to be a real cowboy, has me read this to him at least twice each night, asking questions about the pictures, and generally being thrilled with it. If you have a toddler who's a cowboy, this is definitely the book for you. (Amazon.com's suggested age range of 4-8 may be about right, but, as I noted, my son is quite a bit younger and ! loves it.) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK!!!!
My 6 year old son checked this book out at the library and he loves it. We have read it atleast 3 times a day ever since he got it. I'm dreading returning it but hopefully I can find it somewhere to buy. This book is entertaining and funny and really keeps his attention. The illustrations are cute and funny and he loves just looking at it on his own and trying to read some of it himself. It's always hard to find a book that gets him trying to read but this one sure does it. It's VERY entertaining and I highly recommend it. My son knows most of it by heart now and still chooses for me to read it with him every night at bedtime and in the morning before school.

5-0 out of 5 stars clever is the cleverest!
I borrowed this book from a friend, a little hesitant at first. I was going to read this book to my four year old daughter. She loved it! I added a bit of a southern drawl to entertain her but is definitely not required. The illustrations are fantastic and kept her even more interested in the story line. The Clever Cowboy enters a contest and gets in jam, and you wonder, how will he get out of it? The outcome is outrageously clever. My daughter and I have had wonderful discussions on other clever ways to help the town of yippee-ville out of this jam. They have been silly but it is a joy to hear her use her imagination in such crazy ways. The Clever Cowboy will be a big yee-haw for your little cowchild at home. It has been in mine. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Til the Cows Come Home
An old story retold with a charming western flair. Our children are older now, but I still look for picture books to give as gifts. This is my most recent favorite. We keep a copy on the coffee table to read to young guests and have several stashed away.

Great story. Great illustrations. Great book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Til the Cows Come Home
A wonderful kids book. Engaging story, mine loved it. Wonderful illustrations, kids really enjoy all the visual activity. Fun to read with your kids - we all enjoyed how the story progressed from page to page and have read and re-read it. A nice picture into western, cowboy life and humour.

5-0 out of 5 stars 'Til the Cows Come Home
I love this book! It's a wonderful retelling of an old Jewish folktale placed in a Western setting. The story flows beautifully and the language is fun! Children I have read it to have loved all the western terms. There is even a glossary of some of the words and phrases to help with understanding.

The cowboy in the story is given a beautiful piece of leather which he makes into chaps for himself. As time goes by, the chaps wear out and are remade into something new. The cowboy's life also changes with time. The story is full of warmth and the beautiful illustrations fit it perfectly. They are warm and alive and full of action. A welcome change from many of the newer books today. It is a univeral story of life with a new twist. ... Read more

Book Description

The ride of a lifetime!

The year is 1924 and the place is Florida's dusty and rugged "long" country. Sixteen-year-old Titus Timothy MacRobertson--"Tee"--can saddle up a wild mustang and round up stray beefs on his father's ranch with the best of them, but does he have what it takes to make it on a grueling cattle drive through the unpredictable Florida wilderness? Battered by a storm, then caught up in a roaring stampede, Tee is ripsawed by the raw edges of ranching. But he manages to hang proud--until fate lands one final blow, and Tee must find the courage to become the man no one but his brother, Micah, ever thought he could be.

The book Cowbow Ghost is about a kid his name is Titus our Tim. He grows up with a wonderful mother and a bashful father. Him and his older brother Micah dont get along very good in the begining so Tim tries to earn his brothers respect when the go on there first cattle drive. I woul recommend this book to the younger era of children that need to learn to respect there elders. I think that the author Robert Newton Peck is trying to get to the reader that when someone ignores you are doesnt like you try to give them there space and earn there respect.

5-0 out of 5 stars good book
This book was a pretty good one. It had everything a great book should have in it like a father that pays no attention to the young one and the older one gets all of the attention. The young Titus reminds me of... well...me. I'm not trying to be personal, but this book interested me for just that simple fact. Thumbs up all the way.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Cowboy Gost.
I thought this book was very good and had a lot of exciting part.It never seem to get boring because Titus and his brother always had something to do so if you like adventures, cowboys, and and horses i totaly recemend this book to you

5-0 out of 5 stars Cowboy Ghost
Growing up with an uncaring father and no mother puts Titus in a strange position. His brother is the accepted one while his father doesn't appear to notice Titus. After several of the hands are unable to go on a cattle drive Titus volunteers to go. He must overcome many obstacles. He leaves home a confused boy and comes home a confident man. The best Peck book I've read. ... Read more

Widdermaker is a side splitting, knee slapping ride through the great geographic wonders of the west as Cowpoke Pete pursues the notorious Widdermaker, the meanest orneriest bull you can imagine. The cartoon-like illustrations add a whole nother level of humor to this rompin ride. It's plum full of fun!

Looking for a picture book you won't mind reading over and over? Here's a lively western tall tale that will have your little buckaroos riding off to dreamland in chaps and ten gallon hats night after night. Pattie Schnetzler's rollicking language and Rick Sealock's energetic illustrations will make this lively story a favorite in libraries and classrooms as well. Teachers will find inspiration for a writing lesson that fits right in with the Western Expansion unit of U.S. history. It's funny. It's lively. It has a hero everyone will love. The spirit of the West rides again in tribute to cowboys & cowgirls. The horses are saddled, the dogs are barking & it's time to hit the trail for one more cattle drive - a charming roundup of A to Z at home on the range. I enjoyed the poetry & the large, lovely watercolor pictures of this one! For my full review please see [my website]

4-0 out of 5 stars 26 Views of Cowboys at Work
We just borrowed this unique book from our local library. The watercolor illustrations in it are especially beautiful, depicting real cowboys at work. The text is well thought out as well, introducing some neat words such as farrier, jinglebobs, oilcloth, and quirt. The lore of the Old West has eroded to the tacky in many cases, but this is a book that is artfully and tastefully done. ... Read more

A darling story of a little girl and her grandfather, with a hispanic ranch flavor. Its an easy-to-read tale about how "abuelito" got his tummy, his gray hair and stooped posture. If you have a grandaughter, its a great gift to give her from her grampa! This version has the spanish translation too.

Book Description

Author Joan Walsh Anglund's timeless Brave Cowboy character was inspired by her own son when he was a lively young boy. The Cowboy's Christmas tells a wonderful tale of the special little boy's adventures with his imaginary friend, Bear, as they shop for presents, bake cookies, and decorate for the holidays. Any child (or parent!) can relate to the cowboy's behavior in the days leading up to Christmas, as "Somehow, the cowboy never seemed to cause trouble anymore." He becomes "especially good" and begins to go shopping, hang festive Christmas decorations, bake wonderful cookies, wrap packages, and run errands-all with Bear's help! Joan uses two colors to help tell the cowboy's simple but charming story-black to represent the boy's real world and green to depict the fantasy world he shares with Bear. This seasonal gift book is a heartwarming follow-up to Cowboy's Secret Life, Cowboy and His Friend, and The Brave Cowboy, which sold nearly 250,000 copies worldwide when it was first published in 1959. ... Meet a hilarious trio of reprobate cowpokes: Don, Deke, and the meanest of them all Dom ("He didn't even send a card at Christmas to his Mom") who are redeemed by tending to a baby. Kids will delight at the cowhands (mis)adventures trying to take care of the tyke-from feeding time ("Do you think she'd like some steak? Or maybe she'd like beans?") to changing diapers ("Aw shucks...she's sprung a leak!"). Mike Brownlow's tale combines a terrific sense of humor and a perfect story-telling ear, with a lush, saturated palette. This is one rib-ticklin', heartstring-tuggin' yarn that's sophisticated and funny enough for older readers - and action-packed and accessible to younger listeners. ... Read more
