5-0 out of 5 stars A Gem of a Picture Book
My sister sent this beautiful book to my children for Christmas. It's a stunner with complex, rich sentences, lush illustrations, and a storyline that includes flashbacks, foreshadowing, frame tales, and developed characters. My children, ages 3 and 6, love it, too.My daughter noticed that the cover of the book resembles worn leather--she's right, and the effect is wonderful. We read the note from the author and learned new things about cowboys and settlers (which I won't give away here).Suffice it to say that from now on, we're sleeping with horse hair ropes around our bedding!

Book Description

When a bespectacled stranger shows up at the Z-Bar Ranch asking to borrow a horse, the cowboys think they'll have some fun. They offer him the Zebra Dun, the meanest, wildest, most ornery horse around. But this newcomer not only rides the Zebra Dun with ease, he also out-wrangles every other hand on the ranch-- proving that every educated fellow's not a plumb greenhorn.

5-0 out of 5 stars Funny book with a message
When Cowgirl Kate and Cowboy Carl decide to "get hitched", Kate's cat and Carl's dog wind up living together on the same ranch. And it's hard for these 2 pets to get along. What a great way to show stepkids how to get along with stepsiblings! The illustrations in are funny and cute and they add to the story. In one, the dog paints in the word "Don't" on "The Gitalong Ranch" sign, so it reads: The Don't Gitalong Ranch.

2-0 out of 5 stars A cowdog country
I think it's kind of funny because a cowdog is a dog that goes on a journey. These pictures are painted with watercolors. That is cool. It is actually written and illustrated by the same person named John Holub. It has a lot of detail to it, like patterns, different colors and cowboy clothes. ... Read more

Book Description

At fifteen, Midnight Son has already lived quite a courageous life. He has escaped bounty hunters intent on returning him to slavery and has survived a fierce tornado. It seems no challenge is insurmountable for this young cowboy. But when Midnight Son comes upon a vulnerable Indian village during the journey to find his separated family, he knows he must delay his search in order to help his new friends get safely through the final days of the Civil War.

In this companion to The Adventures of Midnight Son, Denise Lewis Patrick tells a powerful coming-of-age story about a young man who discovers the true meaning of responsibility, bravery, and honor in the face of adversity.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Longest Ride's First Reveiw
I thought this book was very interesting, and I didn't even read the first book. This book's introduction brings you to where the first book really didn't have to happen, as if this were the first book. I had to read this book for an assignment at school and thought of reading it as more of a chore than a pleasure, but once the book gets going, it's pretty dang hard to put down. This book is about an escaped slave boy, Midnight Son, and his friend, Lou Boy, who is not colored. Midnight falls asleep in some snow after a cattle drive and is rescued by a few Arapaho Indians. They bring him to their run-down, make-shift camp, where he meets Winter Mary. Winter Mary's mother, Raven Woman, was also an escaped slave. Winter Mary also had a brother, Eagle Eye. Midnight refuses to go warn the main Indian village of an attack, so Eagle Eye goes to do it himself. After the attack, Midnight, Winter Mary, and Lou Boy find Eagle Eye, and then they carry out Raven Woman's wishes for Midnight to go find her family. Although Midnight does not find Raven Woman's family in this book, he does go on with Winter Mary, Lou Boy, and Eagle Eye to try to find his long lost sister, Lady, who had been sold to another family at an early age, his two sisters, Queen and Truth, and his mother. On his way to find them, he goes back to the place where they worked as slaves. The slaves remaining because their owner hadn't told them that the north had won the civil war and ended slavery told him that one day his father left and they never saw him again. He then continues on to try to find his family with his friends. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful story
This book is the nineth in a series based on the Woody's Roundup gang (Woody, Jessie and the Prospector) from Disney/Pixar's Toy Story 2. In this book, it's Christmas time for the Roundup gang. The Prospector has a gold nugget that he would like nice bag for, Woody has his wonderful hat, and Jessie has her bright new cowgirl boots. Each would like to get the other what he or she really wants, but lacks the funds. Where can they get money quick? This is a story of unselfish giving.

This short book is printed on a heavy grade of paper and contains a copious amount of wonderful, pencil-drawn illustration; both of which conspire to give this book a 1950s feel! The story is wonderful, being something of an update of the old story of a husband with a gold pocket watch, and a wife with beautiful long hair. Both of my children (boy-8 and girl-10) enjoyed this book, and we all recommend it to you! ... Read more
