5-0 out of 5 stars A five star not too long read
Stone Fox is a great book for all elementary students. It is about a ten year old boy (named little Willy) and his dog Searchlight. His grandpa is keeping a secret from him which is the cause of grandpa being sick. When little Willy finds out what the secret is he learns that he must get 500$ and fast. What luck, there just so happens to be a dog sled race going on and the prize money is 500$! When he enters he knows he must win and if he doesn't grandpa won't get better and their farm will be taken away from them. Little Willy feels very confident in himself, but the great Stone Fox is coming. He has never lost a race. Does he beat the great Stone Fox? Does grandpa get better? Do they keep their farm? Use my advice and read the book to find out.

4-0 out of 5 stars An Enjoyable Book
What happens when a little boy enters a sled dog race to win a $500 prize so that he can save his grandfather's farm? You can find out by reading Stone Fox, written by John R. Gardiner.

Stone Fox is a story about a little boy in a small town in the snowy Rockies whose grandfather doesn't want to live any longer. He hasn't been paying his taxes, so he is in danger of losing his farm. It's up to Little Willy to solve the problem.

The main characters of this story are Little Willy and Stone Fox. Little Willy is a small, short-haired ten-year-old boy who wants to save his grandfather's farm. He is very talkative and inquisitive.

Stone Fox is a very tall, tan Native American with long, black hair. He is a very quiet and determined man. Stone Fox hopes to win the $500 prize money so he can buy back land for his tribe.

John r. Gardiner, the author of Stone Fox, was born in Los Angeles and grew up in Long Beach, CA. Mr. Gardiner has written children's stories that have been told on TV. He has also written Top Secret and General Butter Fingers.

By the time you finish reading Stone Fox you will realize that even a kid can make a big difference if he or she tries hard. If you like reading about kids doing amazing things, then you will definitely enjoy Stone Fox.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Race
This book was a good book I liked it. This book was about a little boy who lived with his grandpa. He helped his grandpa grow a farm the little boy also had a dog. The grandpa was not up to date with his payment. Like a day later his grandpa was sick and he could not do anything to help his farm. Now to the good part of the book is the end of the book. There was a sled dog race in town and the boy wanted to enter in it so he went to town the next day to sign up for the race. There was added money for the winner. They had to race that day there was a race for youth and for the adults. For the adults you had to pay 100 dollars to get in the race. But they would not let him in the adult race because he was too young and then finally they let him in the race if he had the money. So he went to the bank to check out his money and he got in the race. So the race had started and their was a lot of people enter the race. He started in the back and worked his way to the front until they saw the finish line and it was the boy and stone fox and the boy was in the lead and they were about 100 feet and the boy's dog died while running. But Stone Fox did not pass the finish line he stop his dog and took out his gun and shot it in the air and told everbody to stop and not to pass the boy. He told the boy to pick up the dog and cross the finish line. And the little boy won the race. And he got to pay for his grandpa's farm after he won the money.

I would tell someone to read this book because of the race it was a real good long race.

5-0 out of 5 stars STONE FOX
I thought the book was the best book I read but It
had a sad ending thats the part I didnt like.

5-0 out of 5 stars Stone Fox

4-0 out of 5 stars better than most skating bios
While not as revealing as a celebrity "tell-all", this book was still much more interesting than most of the other figure skating bios I've read. I can understand why Sasha needs to be a little guarded about her feelings with this year being so close to the Olympic season, but maybe she'll write more openly after the games. All in all, I liked this book and it made me more interested in Sasha's skating career.

2-0 out of 5 stars Waste of Money
This book is extremely vacant of any interesting insight into Sasha Cohen's life. While she could've explored and actually discussed her reasons for switching coaches and her successes and failures, she gave party line accounts of events and information can be gathered from watching a 4 minute fluff piece on Sasha at a skating competition. It'll take a book from Brennan to unlock the controversies surrounding Sasha Cohen.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Engaging!
What a fun, well-written autobiography! Honest and candid, this book really gave me wonderful insight into Sasha's life and into the sport of ice skating. Sasha's writing style is very engaging, and when I finished the book, I felt like I knew her! It also linspired me to go out and challenge myself in some way. What a great read!

5-0 out of 5 stars A national treasure
Sasha Cohen, a genius on the ice, who burst onto the international scene with her amazing short program at the 2002 Olympics, has never really enjoyed the recognition she deserved. Consistently
undermarked at competitions, she has managed nevertheless by the sheer magnitude of her talent to become one the great skaters of all time, medals or no medals (though by now she has her share of these as well). This book gives us a glimpse at the personal side of her story, on the ice and off, replete with high moments and low. Written in an engaging, frank, informal style -- complemented by striking photos by Kathy Goedekin -- it is a wonderful read that should help draw attention to one of our national treasures, a figure skater whose performances grace the ice with heart stopping beauty. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have Iditarod Book
Debbie Miller's masterful retelling of the Serum Run, which saved the children of Nome, Alaska from a deadly diphtheria epidemic in 1925, goes well beyond the facts of this heroic team effort. The Great Serum Run: Blazing the Iditarod Trail includes well-researched factual information, reference tables, maps, and photographs. Miller's narrative comes alive as she skillfully interweaves many little known fascinating details of how the mushers and their dog sled teams endured their individual treks from Nenana to Nome in such deadly weather conditions. The story behind this famous dog sled team relay was inspiration for the world famous "Last Great Race," the Iditarod. Jon Van Zyle, the official Iditarod artist, complements Miller's text with vivid, captivating illustrations. Readers of this book will gain a sense of the unbelievable accomplishment of these dog sled teams. People of all ages will treasure this book. The Great Serum Run: Blazing the Iditarod Trail should be included as a first resource for teachers interested in providing thought provoking discussions about the Iditarod, teamwork, and man's interaction and dependence on animals.

About the Reviewer: Ann Morgan has taught lessons about the Iditarod in grades 2- 6 for the last 18 years, and is currently teaching at Chatham Middle School, Chatham, Massachusetts. In 2000, she was in Alaska at the Iditarod and acquired first hand knowledge of the race by following the mushers and dog sled teams with her own bush pilot from Anchorage to Nome.

4-0 out of 5 stars A book worth reading for children & adults
Debbie Miller did a great deal of research before writing this book, so though it is written for children, it is a great account for all to read. I would highly recommend it to readers of all ages who are interested in dog teams and their important role in Alaska. This is the best and most acurate telling of the story of the serum run to Nome in 1925 which I have ever seen. It is a children's book in that it explains what happened from the viewpoint of children. Beyond the story, there are facts presented in the back of the book. Jon Van Zyle is a popular artist, but I did not feel that his oil paintings for this book were all that great. ... Read more

This is the best book. Our family absolutely loves it. The pictures are fabulous and the story is very cute. You will NOT be dissapointed. It is one of our top 5 favorite children's books. My 3 year old loves looking for the hidden pictures in each page and added bonus to a truly amazing book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Delightful story and pictures
This is a delightful book. My grandson (age 4) and I both love the pictures and the cute story. It's one of our favorite bedtime story books.

4-0 out of 5 stars All that's missing is a corn cob pipe
A far happier idea of what happens to snowmen than "Frosty the Snowman". Author Caralyn Buehner and her husband Mark Buehner (the book's illustrator) woke one morning to find that the snowman they'd created the night before had surreptitiously moved several yards closer to their front door. Inspired by their snow creature's apparent desire to move around and about, the Buehners started speculating on the eventide activities of snowmen in general. The result is the lovely and ludicrous "Snowmen At Night".

As the young boy narrator tells it, one day he made a snowman with coal eyes and mouth and a carrot nose. The next day he returned to his fine creation only to find it looking all saggy baggy. This causes the boy to speculate, "What do snowmen do at night?". The answer is clear. Snowmen like to go to the park drinking ice-cold cocoa made by (and here it gets a little odd) "snowman mothers". Hm. Then they start to participate in their own very particular games. These include races, skating on the frozen ponds, making snow angels, and having fabulous snow fights. There's even some big time sledding down monstrous (but not too scary) hills. Towards the end, you really can't blame the snowmen if they've lost an eye here or a mitten there. Maybe they look a little bit worse for wear by the morning's light, but rest assured that they've definitely had a good time while you slept.

It's difficult for a person of my generation to read a snowman book and not instantly think of old "Calvin and Hobbes" cartoons. The snowmen pictured here are actually not too different from the ones pictured in Bill Watterson's strips, but they're significantly less scary. I think you'll instantly gravitate to this book the minute you see the cover. On the top half stand the serene smiling snowmen in the bright noonday sun. On the bottom half they're cavorting in a kind of makeshift conga line. Kids will warm to the idea of snowmen (something they themselves have created) having lives entirely of their own. It doesn't hurt any that the guys definitely seem to be having the time of their lives. Caralyn's text is well complimented by Mark's illustrations too. There's even been the extra added element of hidden shapes for kids to find in the pictures. If readers look carefully they might be able to spot a cat, a rabbit, a Santa face, and more. I appreciated that these images never once drew inordinate attention to themselves or distracted from the pictures. That is the mark of an expert illustrator.

The back flap of the book shows a photograph of the rogue snowman that inspired this book in the first place. The book isn't the most original in the world and its illustrations aren't going to blow you away with either their wit or their artistic merits but it's certainly a great wintertime tale. There are five million books about toys coming to life at night, so why not snowmen too? If you want a picture book that takes away the sting of snowmen melting, I suggest you definitely check out and read the jaunty flouncy "Snowmen At Night" and read it to your loved ones. It's a book with pep in its step.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love the Snowmen
Who'd have thought snowmen were so busy at night? This book is great, the story is unique and very enjoyable. The whole concept of the story is that at night the snowmen in your neighborhood all get together and have a grand old time for themselves. They play baseball with snowballs and a broom. They have a tremendous snowball fight, they make snow angels, go sledding. The illustrations are outstanding. One of my best book purchases so far this year. So if you notice in the morning that your snowman looks a little disheveled , it's because he had a very busy night.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a keeper!
This book is definitely not just for children. Adults will enjoy sharing this with their kids. We just received the book and my husband & I are in love with "Snowmen at Night". The faces and details on the snowmen are outstanding. The artist has hidden little pictures on the pages for you to find. I have a feeling that we are going to get as much enjoyment from this book as our 3 yr. old daughter. ... Read more

    The Citadel

It stands unconquered, the last great summit of the Alps. Only one man has ever dared to approach the top, and that man died in his pursuit. He was Josef Matt, Rudi Matt's father.

At sixteen, Rudi is determined to pay tribute to the man he never knew, and complete the quest that claimed his father's life. And so, taking his father's red shirt as a flag, he heads off to face the earth's most challenging peak. But before Rudi can reach the top, he must pass through the forbidden Fortress, the gaping chasm in the high reaches of teh Citadel where his father met his end. Rudi has followed Josef's footsteps as far as they will take him. Now he must search deep within himself to find the strength for the final ascent to the summit--to plant his banner in the sky.

His father died while trying to climb Switzerland’s greatest mountain—the Citadel—and young Rudi knows he must make the assault himself. ‘Based upon the author’s personal experiences, with details from the original ascent of the Matterhorn, the story has authenticity, atmosphere, and excitement.’ —BL.

5-0 out of 5 stars A tattered red shirt has never symbolized so much!
Banner In The Sky is an amazing acount of a fictional mountain climbing expedition based in historical accounts of the conquer of the Matterhorn. The protagonist, 16-year-old Rudi Matt, is forced to wash dishes in a hotel instead of following his true dream; climbing the Citadel, the very mountain that had claimed his father's life fifteen years ago. The antagonist is, obviously, the Citadel herself, the last unconquered peak in the area. Although an overprotective mother and uncle also get in the way of Rudi's dream. When Rudi finally gets a chance to join the expedition up the mountain, he shows everyone that he is determined to complete the journey his father started. Rudi's journey is a journey of faith and stamena and also forgiveness and loyalty. These values are all summed up in the red shirt that Rudi carries with him to place at the peak of the Citadel; the very shirt his father wore the night he died before giving it up so that another man could live. This book is all about following your dreams, but also about the fact that one must work hard to achieve those dreams. James Ramsey Ullman combines history with an extraordinary account of the happenings in the small village of Kurtall in the Swiss Alps. For me the highlight of the book was a Rudi's nighttime encounter with the spirit of his father as he sits in the very spot that claimed his father's life. A chilling and magical scene.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREATEST BOOK EVER
My friend told me that Banner in the Sky is a very good book, well I'm here to vouch for that. Banner in the Sky is the most intriguing story I have ever read. James R. Ullman's book is about a legend, named Josef Matt, whose son is determined to climb the mountain that Josef died on. If Rudi Matt can do this, if he can climb the Citadel, he will be the first one ever to climb it. But in all good stories there's a catch, Rudi's mom and uncle won't let him climb the mountain because of his father's death. Plus Rudi is not built to climb! Along the way Rudi meets Captain John Winter, the best climber of his day. The Captain gives Rudi his chance to climb, but will he? Banner in the sky is a gut-wrenching story about sheer will and determination. My recommendation, simple, if you ever have had parental problems (and I know you have) then this is your book!

4-0 out of 5 stars Book Review
Banner in the Sky is one of the best books I have ever read. James Ramsey Ullman is a very talented author and his use of discriptive words is amazing. All the challenges that Rudi must face and the amazing truth about the true conquerors of the Citadel make this book all the more thrilling. I would recommend this book to anyone that loves thrills, excitement, and amazing scenery.

1-0 out of 5 stars zzzzzzzzzz
This book was the most boring thing I have ever read. The same situations kept occurring over and over and this made the book predictable. Of course, I had to read it for school which made it less fun. But on the other hand, why would anyone want to read this book for fun? Just reading the first couple of sentences puts you to sleep. The characters are all the same and the worst part was that Rudi never even reached the summit! Despite all his attempts, he never got to his goal EVEN AT THE END OF THE MOST BORING AND TEDIOUS BOOK I HAVE EVER READ! My advice, if you're looking for some sleep, read this.

    Book Description

    "A splendid, vividly written adventure."
    THE KIRKUS REVIEWS
Bright Dawn was a teenaged Eskimo girl. Black Star was her part-husky, mostly wolf, pet. Together they were about to begin the famous Iditarod dogsled race through the bitter cold of Alaska. Bright Dawn knew they would win, but she didn't count on the cold, blinding whiteout, the belligerent bull moose, or ice that could crack and splinter at any time. And she soon realized that she was not only depending on Black Star for the race, but for her life....

4-0 out of 5 stars Black Star Bright Dawn
An 18 year old girl is going on a dog sled race for her dad.She has been on lots of races before but now she is faced with the race of her life across three villages. They have to stop at every check-point and tell what place that they are in. She has to get her dogs warmed up but she only has two weeks.During the journey she meets up with some really bad animals and some bad things happen to her dogs. Her dad falls into a river and gets hurt really really bad and her dad can't race so she races for him. When she had to race back through the town, her dad's friend tries to cheat by trying to put in another dog and take out an injured dog so she unhooks the dog and leaves it there because when they start they paint a blue stripe on their back so you can't cheat. The reason I picked this book is because there is some sad parts and some really exciting parts.

5-0 out of 5 stars How Much I liked This book
This book, Black Star, Bright Dawn is really good, and I have read it quite a few times. The author, Scott O'dell had written many award-winning books, such as The Black Pearl, Island Of the Blue Dolphins, and many more. In this book, Bright Dawn runs the Iditirod Dog sled race when her father is injured and loses a hand to severe frostbite. Bright Dawn wants to run the race in the place of her father but he dosen't think she can because she is a girl, and no girl has ever been in the race before. When he finally lets her go, he does not want her to put her dog, Black Star, in front because he is half wolf. Bright Dawn finally convinces her father to let her go, and she sets out. The book really discribes the dangers of the race, from the moose that can kill you or your sled dogs, to avalanches and the ever constant threat of loosing limbs to frostbite.

5-0 out of 5 stars Black Star, Bright Dawn
Bright Dawn was a teenage Eskimo girl. The dog was Black Star, part husky but mostly wolf and they were best friends. They were going to race in the Iditarod together as a team because her father had been injured and couldn't go through with it. So she trains for the Iditarod and finally the day comes when It's tim to start. Along the way they never expected it to be as cold as it was, a bull moos, ice that could crack and splinter at any moment. By the time she was halfway through the race Bright Dawn was not only depending on Black Star for the race, but for her life....

3-0 out of 5 stars Black Star,Bright Dawn
This book is about a girl who was about to race in a one thousand-mile race. Bright Dawn,a teenage Eskimo,is her name. He was Black Star, the leader of the dogsled team. Bright Star had to fill in for her dad. He was praktising raceing and he fell of and he broke is sholder. When she was raceing a storm move in and it caused her to stop and get the snow of the doge's eyes. Right befor she finished she thought she had lost but she was in 2nd place. I like the book because it is about Eskimo's. I think the are smart, for the race's and igllos, they are cool. I liked it because she had to fill in for her dad.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not One of My Favorites, But Still Good
This isn't one of Scott O'Dell's best books in my opinion, but it is still good. I recomend Island of the Blue Dolphins, but about Black Dawn, Bright Star. It starts out with Bright Dawn's father, Bartok, who is in a 1,000 mile dogsled race. While Bartok is practicing, he falls off his sled and breaks his shoulder. He asks bright Dawn to race for him, and she does. Bright Star leades a dogsled pack from Anchorage to nome. it is called the Idiarod dogsled race. Black Dawn is the leader of the dogsled pack. he is stubborn, being the leader of the pack. In the end she makes it and gets first place. She only gets $50,000 of the $200,000 though, beacause she is a girl. She also gets $2,500 for the Sportsmanship Award. She is happy, even though she didn't get the $500,000, because she earned a lot more then she ever has before. ... Read more

As a father, the family side of the story really touched me as well.

If you have daughters, or daughters who love sports like mine, this is the BEST book I have seen for them.

The main character is one tough cookie, and her guts, spirit and determination are inspirational to all girls !

Because the hockey action is soooo good, even my 13 year old son wants to read the book now.

5-0 out of 5 stars A heartwarming dog story from the land of bitter cold!
We recently added "Akiak" to our elementary school library collection, because one of our primary classes was following this year's Iditarod. It instantly became a popular title, and several other classes have thoroughly enjoyed it as a read-aloud.

I can see "Akiak" becoming an annual tradition, right before the first "mush" of the famous Alaskan sled-dog race.

In frosty clear language, accompanied by his museum-quality oil paintings, Robert Blake, presents a day by day account of Mick's team, initially led by 10 year-old Akiak, until she "can't run on that paw." Akiak is left at a dog drop, but refusing to be flown out, she breaks free to chase after her team, many hours behind.

In this "incredible journey," students get a taste of the Alaskan's passion for this unique sport, learning about the hardships and rules of the race along the way. The trail map on the end papers would be helpful for those wanting to turn this into a simple geography lesson.

This excellent story works on many levels. This is worth reading, even if you're just looking for a heartwarming dog story!

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic Canuck Childrens Book Hits Home with American Dude
The Hockey Sweater is such a nice little childrens book that can melt the heart of any hockey fan no matter how old. The book is great for young people, the illustrations are adorable and there is some hockey history laid in the book as well. It is a nice look back on a semi-forgotten time and it is nice to introduce old-school hockey to the youngsters. I am going to read this book to my nephew once he is old enough and if that is not recommendation enough to get your hands on this book yourself, then I am lost for words.

This is a true example of Canadian culture and can also be applied to other sports.

The father is a littlemean until the end of the book. Dusk is the younger brother. And Dawn is the older sister by three minutes. Dusk is a smart mouth. And Dawn is mature sister.

Their father gets ticked off when the kids talk about hockey in front of him. Their father doesn't come to most of their games and when he does he just reads a news paper. The book is funny and interesting. I think you will like it! The reason I like the book because it is funny book.
