4-0 out of 5 stars My Visit To The Zoo
This book was very interesting, and I think this is a great book for kids to read. This informational, yet very interting, and fun to read book, tells kids a lot about animals. Even though this does talk a lot about information, I enjoyed it, and I think many other kids will to.
I would recommend this book for children of all ages, because of the information that it sends out, and the way they turn it into a wonderful story. My favorite part of the book, was when they were telling me about all the different kinds of monkeys and all the indangered species. I hope that many children will read this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great message, but not a five star book...
I appreciate the message that this book sends, in teaching children about endangered species. The book spends most of the content in providing information on the animals in their habitats, yet tries to pass the information off in a story. I think the facts provided are wonderful for children to learn, and the illustrations do help lure the children into asking questions, but overall the book lacks a little in keeping a child's attention. Not quite a five star book, as a result, but very worthwhile information on endangered animals. ... Read more

Book Description

Dr. Robert Mason, the current recipient of the National Science Foundation"s Young Investigator Award, has been studying a mysterious phenomenon for over fifteen years: the reemergence of tens of thousands of red-sided garter snakes — the world"s largest concentration of snakes — after a winter spent in a state of suspended animation in subterranean caverns.

This gathering each spring in the forests of Manitoba, Canada, is one of the most extraordinary events of the natural world and is the subject of study for Dr. Mason, a.k.a. the Snake Scientist.

5-0 out of 5 stars A unique look into one of the wonders of the world.
Sy Montgomery and Nic Bishop have managed to bring this awesome display of nature and the man who studies it to life! This book would be a wonderful addition to any household, library or school, as it describes the work of a dedicated scientist who has committed his life to understanding what we as humans can gain from the lives of garter snakes. Dr. Mason obviously loves his work and loves passing along his knowledge to others, young and old. "The Snake Scientist" is an accurate picture of an almost undescribable phenomenom.

5-0 out of 5 stars An inspirational book for kids
This book about the adventures of Bob Mason, an Oregon State University scientist who studies snakes all over the world, is a must-read for any child (grades four to seven would be great) who loves science or nature - and a good gift idea for any parent who would like to steer their kids in that direction. Easy to read, great photography, compelling stories about snakes, science, the growth of a young boy who just started out watching nature shows on TV and turned that interest into a career as a world-class zoologist. Excellent choice!

5-0 out of 5 stars Stunning photography
A fabulous book, replete with color photographs of the snakes. Kids will gravitate to the pictures first, and then the text will engage them in Dr. Mason's research. His comments are child-oriented, yet will not insult the older readers in the audience. Bob's stories of his childhood and career path are an added bonus to this book....and may even encourage more budding "Snake Scientists"! Well done! ... Read more

Book Description

Children follow the life of a busy worker bee as she moves from job to job in the hive, helping the community in various ways. As a nurse bee, the worker feeds the larvae, nourishing the young into adulthood. As a forager bee, she flies long distances in search of nectar, pollinating plants as she moves from flower to flower. And as a guard bee, the worker warns the hive of intruders and battles honey-stealing robber bees from other hives. The simple, informative text and vibrant gouache art highlight the many activities of these busy insects and their amazing sense of community, while a special experiment encourages kids to dance like a honeybee to learn about bee communication.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Wonderful World of Worker Bees
This author came to my kids' school and shared this book with us (I am a mom and came to the assembly). It is a great book, and my kids all love it (ages 6-12). I learned so much about Honeybees from the text and the illustrations are so unique. This is not your typical boring non-fiction book. It is written in a lively manner and the illustrations are bright and beautiful. The reason I'm writing is that even though I ordered the book through school for my kids, I am ordering more to give as presents (...) I highly recommend this book -- .

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Book about Bees for Children
I am a beekeeper and I have been looking for a book about bees for children for years. This one is not only beautiful (what gorgeous, fun art!), it is also scientifically accurate, easy to understand--and really fun to read. There is humor in this book, too. The author and illustrator really knew what they were doing. Publisher, too. Those honeycombed endpapers are ingenius. Plus I see that they used a reknown beekeeper and author as their expert, and that was brilliant. Kudos to National Geographic and the author/illustrator team.

5-0 out of 5 stars Honeybees by Deborah Heiligman, illustrated by Carla Bolembe
Ever wondered how bees make honey? Dive into this lively informative book about bees and find out why " Busy as a bee" is not an idle statement! Discover which bees work, feed, fly and warn the hive of possible attacks. The book is well written, vividly illustrated and artistically designed. Notice the end papers!Deborah Heiligman takes a complicated concept and explains it in carefully chosen clarifying details. Add this to your home library. You'll return to it, again and again.

5-0 out of 5 stars The colorful and exciting life of honeybees
As the father of an eight year old who is not particularly interested in science, I am always looking for science themed books that will capture my son's attention. Honeybees is just such a book. My son (and my daughter and I) found the story of the honeybee's life to be intriguing. Their society is truly fascinating. Heiligman's text is well written and informative. Carla Golembe's colorful illustrations are exquisite, imaginative and accurate at the same time. A most impressive accomplishment. ... Read more

Book Description

Prickly Pete the packrat takes young readers into the desert to get some answers: Can desert tortoises climb out of their shells? Do Gila monsters bite and not let go? Are barrel cactuses filled with water you can drink? Are javelinas really wild desert pigs? And Pete's favorite: If you leave your watch outside at night, will a packrat take it and leave some cactus in its place?

Beautifully illustrated, this delightful full-color children's book shows that desert facts often are much more amazing than the myths (cactifracts) we've all heard! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Separates desert facts from "cactifracts"
Correctamundo!: Prickly Pete's Guide To Desert Facts & Catifracts separates desert facts from "cactifracts", that is, things lots of kids think are true about the desert but are not factual. Lively, fun, educational, and highly recommended for both school and community library collections, Correctamundo! will provide young readers ages 8 to 12 with a splendid and entertaining introduction to the flora and fauna of the desert.

5-0 out of 5 stars Learn to tell a fact from a cactifract ...
Both of my children (ages 5 and 7) and I love this book. It is well written, amusing, creative and informative. The format is fun and inventive -- Prickly Pete (a packrat) makes a series of statments about desert creatures and then asks the readers guess whether each one is a fact or a "cactifract"(untrue), before turning the page to find the correct answer. My children love guessing and learning whether they were right. I recommend it for its entertainment value as well as for the information it contains about the natural hsitory of the desert. ... The simple, yet accurate, graphics of this little book are a favorite in my Kindergarten classroom. The mysterious , invisible growth inside the egg is presented as a link in the life cycle of the chicken. Children delight in the transparent pages and return to look again and again. Non-readers can recall/retell the simple story with the help of the pictures. Older children quickly absorb the facts illustrated and want additional information. Book Description

A wasp lays its eggs under a
caterpillar's skin so that its young can
eat the caterpillar's guts as they grow.

A young head louse makes its home
on a human hair and feasts on
human blood.

Frogs use their eyeballs to help
swallow their food.

From small worms that live in a dog's nose mucus to exploding ants to regurgitating mother gulls, this book tells of the unusual ways animals find food, shelter, and safety in the natural world.

Ifanimals all ate the same things and lived in the same places, it would be impossible for all of them to survive. So they specialize. Some animals eat the bits that others leave behind, such as skin and mucus. They find all kinds of unusual places to shelter, includingthe cracks and holes in another creature's skin or its internal organs. They use their own bodies to protect themselves from predators by imitating unsavory items such as bird droppings and even by blowing up.

These habits that may seem disgusting to us are wonderful adaptations that make it possible for a great variety of creatures to live and thrive on Earth. Read about them and marvel at the amazing ways animals adapt to the natural world. ... Read more
