But as night falls in the zoo, her brother becomes the least of her worries, as they discover they're locked in the zoo with an escaped convict who's stalking their every move. Unable to run, and with no help in sight, their last chance for survival is Ellen's crazy science project on animal communication. 4-0 out of 5 stars Reviewing An Interesting And Capturing Book
What if you were locked in a zoo without your parents? Sound cool? Now what if you were locked in a zoo with an escaped criminal with a knife and no adults around to help? That's what Ellen and her little brother Cory have to deal with in Terror at the Zoo by author Peg Kehret.

A prize of an overnight sleep-over for four is auctioned off and Ellen and Cory's grandparents find it a fine idea as a gift for their granddaughter's birthday. But when Ellen and Corey's mom and dad's flight home gets delayed, and their grandmother is in the hospital because of an illness, there is no one to take care of the kids. Still, they decide they are not going to miss out on a great adventure and decide to go to the zoo sleep-over by themselves.

Meanwhile, an escaped fugitive looking for money goes to the zoo to kidnap a baby monkey and hold it for ransom. When Ellen and Cory find the escaped criminal in the middle of the night, the chaos really starts.

The children look for the zoo security guard, but he is no where to be found. To make things even worse, the only phone available is outside the locked zoo. With no way to reach a phone or find help, can Cory and Ellen escape from this hostile criminal, or are they, like the zoo animals themselves, trapped inside a fenced, barb-wired prison?

Will Ellen's science project of communicating with animals telepathically help her while she's locked in the zoo? Will Ellen and Corey be able to hide from the escaped criminal? Will their parents arrive it time to rescue them? This really is a night of terror at the zoo!

This book keeps you on the edge of your seat the entire time just waiting to find out what will happen next. If you like suspense, action, and fiction, I would highly recommend this book!

I really enjoyed it and I hope you will too.

4-0 out of 5 stars Awsome Book, A.W.
I think this book is a awsome book. If you are reading this book dont forget to read the whole thing then it will be more exciting. This book as a lot of action in it. It is about this girl and this boy. there names are Ellen and Cory. Ellen can communicate with animals in her mine. Corey is a young boy thats is always a happy boy and he likes to go to the zoo. There birthdays are close together. There grandparents gave them a present together. The birthday present was a camp out at the zoo. At the same time this is happening this man had escape from prison and was running somewhere. The next day they went to the zoo in was going to spend the night. Well during the night Corey was gone and Ellen went to find him.

4-0 out of 5 stars Terror at the zoo
I liked this book because of many reasons, and their was only one reason I didnt like it. The one reason I didnt enjoy the book is because the ending cut off before explaining how it ended for all of the characters. Overall though I thought that this book was very good. One of the reasons I chose this book and a reason I liked it is because it is an adventure and it is excitig because they are always trying to escape. Another reason that I liked the book is that I like the author and I think that she did a good job writing the book, that is one of the things that made it interesting.

I think that the best part of the book is when the elephant saved the children from the criminal and they were able to capture him. If the elephant wouldnt have helped them then they might not have lived. After they escaped they were able to get the police who then put the man back in jail.

I think that the best story element was the setting. The author did an excellent job of picking a setting and she described it very clearly, she explained about everything at the zoo. She also did a good job with the conflict because it is something that could actually happen in real life with kids.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Great Book!!!!
Peg Kehret is a great author, NOT! You should read this book if your into action books. What happened at Terror at the Zoo is a girl gets a gift to sleep over at the zoo with her little brother.Peg Kehret is a great author, NOT! You should read this book if your into action books. While, well, is in the zoo, he steals a, whoops I almost gave it away.
The book starts with a little excitement. It contains a real lot of action. The main character has a lot of courage. The ending is not a big surprise.
I think Peg Kehret meant the moral to be Murphy's rule. What ever can go wrong, will go wrong. You should really read this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars This book blows
Terror at the Zoo is a story set in Seattle about two kids who decide to sleep over at a zoo. Unfortunately, they soon discover that they have company; a burglar is also there. The book basically consists on that premise and setup leading to that. Besides being about one little episode, Terror at the Zoo is horribly written and amazed me with its corniness: at the end, the two kids escape by telepathically talking to an animal.
So, let's sum it up: one episode, badly written, stupidly corny. A great read if you have Down syndrome! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars DO NOT BUY!
I am a pediatric nurse and I was utterly horrified that this was a child's book. All the negative, scary words and phrases were NOT mitigated by the "pretty" watercolor drawings. My coworkers - all pediatric nurses and most, are mothers were equally offended. Words like malicious and conniving. And constantly "warning" the child. Children are repeaters of phrases and I do NOT want my child or any child repeating back and around "don't say I didn't warn you" as this is the catchphrase. DO NOT BUY

4-0 out of 5 stars What to do when this happens at the zoo?
The title warns us to never, ever shout in a zoo. Wouldn't you shout if you dropped YOUR ice cream cone? The heroes innocent shout sets off an animal rampage. Cushman's illustrations are charming. Karen Woodworth-Roman

5-0 out of 5 stars We're shouting for more!
This book is hilarious. It's hardly boring. When a little girl drops her ice cream cone and lets out a bellow she sets of a chain reaction that ends up with her being locked up by the animals. The build up makes it fun to read. My kids love this book. It's got a girl main character for my daughter and plenty of outrageous humor and rough and tumble animals for my sons so everybody's happy.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
I was very disappointed with this book, I bought it based on how much we like the author's other books "Bear Snores on , Bear Wants More and Hilda Must Be Dancing."This one is alright I wouldn't recommend it to anyone, as a matter of fact we found it boring and returned it. ... Read more

In author-illustrator Todd Parr's world, there are a few important rulesone must always follow when visiting the zoo. "Do feed an elephant peanuts.Don't feed her peanut butter. Do take dancing lessons with a porcupine. Don'tslow dance with him. Do wash your clothes with a rhino. Don't hang them on hishorns to dry." Civilization would be much more civil if we could all abide bythese simple behavior guidelines.

Brilliant colors and boldly outlined kid-style drawings of animals set Parr'sbooks apart from the pack, not to mention his thoroughly nutty views on socialdecorum. Every one of his outrageously goofy (yet somehow earnest) life primers, including The Okay Book,The Best Friends Book, and Do's and Don'ts, willkeep readers from 2 to 102 giggling and sputtering with delight. Parentsmight want to keep a close eye on their young ones during their nextvisit to the zoo, on the off chance Junior might forget his etiquette and try touse a snake as a bookmark or connect the dots with a leopard's spots. 5-0 out of 5 stars Fun story, easy to read, vivid colors
I started reading this to my daughter when she was six months old. The book is smaller than the traditional big picture books, and is very easy and quick to read. The books pages go as follows:
On one page it says: DO feed an elephant peanuts
On the opposite page it says: DON'T feed him peanut butter

The colors are very vivid and the drawing simple. This is a nice book to read to your child starting from day one! We are on our third copy of it and my daughter just turned three.
Great for a boy or a girl.

5-0 out of 5 stars Our Son's Favorite Book!
Among the crowd of classics, such as "Goodnight Moon," and newer books by Boynton and others, this book captivates the attention of our 14-month old son, and we are grateful to the author. After two months of daily reading, we put it away. It was recently rediscovered, and he constantly reaches for it in the pile of books we make available to him. Is it the colors? The characters? Or the sheer amusement of it all? Maybe it's laughing along with his father or mother as we read it together. Highly recommended from a happy father. I'm buying more from Todd Parr!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great behind-the-scenes look at the zoo
For all the children who go to the zoo and enjoy looking at the animals, Gail Gibbons presents a wonderful behind-the-scenes look at all the work that makes it possible. From the zookeepers arriving in the early morning to feed the animals and clean their cages and the vendors preparing for the zoo's visitors, to the security guard locking the main gate and patroling the empty walkways, the book does a nice job of giving children a more in-depth view of the zoo. Veterinarians help sick animals and monitor the birth of baby animals. Construction workers build a new exhibit. Zoo keepers prepare the special foods that the animals eat.

Both my boys were able to easily relate things they'd seen at our zoo to the book. Their next visit, too, was filled with applying what they'd seen in the book to our zoo.

Gibbons' books are always excellent. Zoo brings alive a favorite place to visit in a very unique way. ... Read more

That wily Wallace! Where has he gone this time? The funny littleorange-furred orangutan is always surrounded by friends at the zoo. But timeafter time Wallace's wanderlust drives him to escape from his comfortableday-to-day existence with his friend the zookeeper--to a department store, tothe circus, to a baseball game, to the beach. The zookeeper is not as disturbedas you might imagine by Wallace's repeated breakouts. In fact, one mightalmost think he plants the ideas in Wallace's head himself... After all, every time Wallace disappears, it's up to the zookeeper to find him, even ifthat means spending an hour or two at an amusement park or the nature museum.

For over 35 years, readers of all ages have gleefully searched these pages forthe mischievous ape. Hilary Knight, well-loved illustrator of the Eloise series, among many other picture books, created a classic with Where's Wallace?.Each of nine intricately detailed panoramic pictures is packed with lively, humorous activity, making the search for Wallace a delightful challenge. Forthose who pride themselves on having found the orange fellow on every spread, the book ups the ante. See if you can find the six additional charactersaccompanying Wallace on every adventure, including a cello player, a jogger, andan old woman who manages to keep knitting in the most unusual places! 5-0 out of 5 stars Better than "Where's Waldo", a shame it's out of print.
As the predecesor to "Where's Waldo", this book is fun, lively and just plain great to look at. The story of a little orangutan who wonders about life outside the zoo is a visual treat. Wallace loves his life in the zoo but takes every opportunity to visit places like the beach, a ballgame, a department store and other exciting places. In each picture, Wallace must be found; for those truly observant readers, a host of other characters appear in each picture as well. Would love to find this book for my children as I loved it as a child. A shame it's out of print, one can always hope.

5-0 out of 5 stars What's better than pen and ink Hilary Knight? Full color
Being the big Hilary Knight fan, I was happy to see that this book has been reprinted for those of us who were not around the first time it came out. Yay! The artwork in this book is classic Knight, and the story is fun and engaging (and predates Where's Waldo by almost three decades.) I am thrileld to see Knight finally getting his due, and I sure wouldn't mind seeing a sequel to this book either.. hint hint. Wallace is actually more innocent and likable than Eloise, so not even the reader is too frustrated that he keeps escaping. After all, with the world that Knight has created, how could we not want to get out and explore as well?

The pictures alone are fun to look at. Kids will enjoy spending time looking at the pictures (well, I did too...)

5-0 out of 5 stars I am thrilled to share this with my children
This was a favorite of mine as a child. I am so pleased to be able to get them their own copies.(mine is a bit tattered) They love finding Wallace and all of his friends over and over again. This book just stands up to the test of time. We read it every night.

5-0 out of 5 stars Revisiting my childhood
One of my absolute favorite books from childhood, "Where's Wallace" still does not disappoint. Both youngsters and adults will find themselves glued to the pages as they attempt to identify the whereabouts of a multitude of characters which appear in various scenes throughout the book. Hilary Knight's illustrations are fabulously humorous and clever - a perpetual joy to read that never gets dull!

5-0 out of 5 stars Will provide hours, days and years of entertainment!
This is my absolute favorite book from my childhood. I remember my parents reading it to me. I remember reading it myself, searching through the pages to find Wallace and all of the other characters. I am so glad that they have re-issued it, as it was out of print for a while. When I re-read this as an adult, I realized that the zookeeper was actually "letting" Wallace escape. There is so much humor that I missed as a child. Looking through the scenes to find the characters and following the evolution of their stories is fun for both child and adult. Even if your child can't read the words on her own, she can look at the pictures and try to find everyone. And if you do have to read it to her over and over, you will not be bored to tears. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Cute Book
This book was recommended by the Before Five In A Row series. It is a cute book with flaps that the children love to flip by themselves. For children who like animals and surprises (what's behind the flap surprises) this is a good gift and a good addition to your family library. The flaps are large enough so they are less likely to be ripped off. The flaps actually are part of the page flipped over, so it's not a small flip-flap like in the Spot Goes To School series of flap books.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must book for young growing minds
Being a "book family" and spending hours searching book stores and TEST-READING so many titles before purchasing, we stumbled upon this class H.A. Rey book and it's a "REAL WINNER". Our 3 yr old grandson Derek wants it read to him every night and I being an old zoo keeper and teacher enjoy it just as much as he does. Bah humbug to those who say it is repetitious - in repetition lies the foundation for early reading ....and as far as the scientific end of it - those zoo meals are just about on target except for too many bananas - must have been George's influence on the author. RUN OUT AND GET THIS "classic" FLAP BOOK F-A-S-T !
You won't be disappointed and your early reader will adore it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Book for Every Child
I have 3 children, ages 19, 10, and 4. When my oldest was 5 or so, I stumbled across these books. This is one title in a series of 5 books that ALL my children enjoyed in their childhoods. My 4 yr. old still picks these books for bedtime most every week.

The artwork is wonderful...H. A. Rey had a wonderfully colorful and innocent style of art that is perfect for children. I as a parent like his art too. It is just really sweet.

I can only say these are great little books; everyone who sees them likes them and they make nice gifts, and are inexpensive too. Our first set finally wore out and we recently bought new ones. I am glad to see that the paper is much stronger (thicker and laminated)--these are very durable books.

These WILL be loved by your children!

4-0 out of 5 stars Feed the Animals
This is a book by H. A. Rey, the author of the Curious George series. It is a fun story for preschoolers about life at the zoo. The rhyming, Lift-the-Flap format makes for extra involvement and entertainment. Children enjoy guessing which animals are behind each flap. The illustrations are very similar to the Curious George books.

When my children were very small, sometimes Curious George was too long. This series (there are five books in Mr. Rey's Lift-the-Flap series) is a nice prelude to Curious George. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An Amazing Book
"A giraffe and a Half" By Shel Silverstein is an amazing book, especially for kids. I loved when my mom read it to me as a child or when I read it becuase it was always fun to see what came next. Sometimes I would even guess what was comming next. Both the pictures and the sayings made me laugh or smile. I would have to say it was one of my favorite books as a kid.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Book My Mom Read To Me As A Child
I think this is a very good book for childeren becuase it is funny and also has alot of funny pictures. This book makes you laugh, and it also has many tounge twisters which, i think, makes it funnier.
This book is about a giraffe and a little boy and he keeps making the giraffe do things or adds things to him. Everytime he adds something to him you read what the giaffe has on or did all over again. The giraffe ends up taking off everthing of giving it away. In the end he is just a normal giraffe again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Delightful
One of the best children's books I've read. The rhymes are contagious. The story slides off your tongue as you read it. Children are taken with it. And then we create the game of adding new verses and rhymes for the giraffe, and a half.

5-0 out of 5 stars Giraffe & a Half :()
Giraffe and a half is great for kids that love repetition. Your child could learn to memorize better with this book. I really love this book and I would recommend getting other Shel Silverstein books because I have the whole collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hilarious
I read it to my own kids when they were small, read it until they and I had it memorized. I then took it to school where I read it to my eighth--yes, eighth-graders who laughed and got sing-songy and guessed the next line and who chanted along as soon as they figured out the pattern. We next wrote our own versions and read them to the elementary kids. Good stuff for all ages. One of my favorite books! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great introduction to pop-ups
My 10-month-old son can be immediately quieted with this book. He's clearly fascinated by the "magic" of the appearing and disappearing pop-up panels.

There's no variety in the way the pop-ups work from page to page -- they all are triggered by pulling a tab at the side of the page, and they all pop up in exactly the same place in exactly the same size.

But the story is good, the illustrations are colorful and clever, and it's the littlest readers are amazed. I've been searching for its equal, but haven't found it yet. All other pop-ups are too easy to tear or grab.

In other words, although adults may fault it for lacking variety, young children don't seem to be bothered by that. And its sturdy construction makes it a very worthwhile buy. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars What's a Beebee Bird?
This is a cute bedtime book. We meet a lot of tired animals in the zoo who are trying to get to sleep when a baby bird keeps them up with his singing. So, to get back at him, all day long they make noise and cause the bird to miss his nap. That night, he is so tired that he doesn't sing and everyone is able to get some sleep. I had fun reading this book to some kids for nap time and they enjoying the silly repeating phrase "beebeebobbi" - especially when I said it the way that all of the different animals would. I did have to take a star away because at times the text can be difficult to read - especially for beginning readers who are trying to follow along while reading over your shoulder. Also, it can be a little bit too exciting when trying to get children to settle down for a nap.

Why 3 stars?:
A fun book with some funny moments, but some of the text can be difficult to read. Parts can be a little too exciting when trying to have kids fall asleep. All in all, a good book that should be used carefully.

5-0 out of 5 stars Funny for the whole family
This book is funny in a way the whole family can relate to. Parents and siblings who have been kept awake by a baby will especially enjoy the comic view of their predicament. Those who do the waking will enjoy the baby bird's expressing their viewpoint. The artwork is great at showing the exhausted and irascible animals who are kept awake by the cheerful baby bird. The typesetting is very clever, too.

3-0 out of 5 stars Why only males at the zoo?
This is a cute book, first written in 1963 & reillustrated by the wonderful Steven Kellogg, who has used his talent well here. But I found it disappointing that everyone identified by gender was male: the bear, lion, elephant, the bird and the zookeeper. Sure, it was written a while ago but presumably there were female animals then, too, right?

5-0 out of 5 stars I've loved this book for 40 years
I still remember the librarian reading this book to us in first grade. I remembered it when my children were born but, alas, couldn't find it in print any longer. So I got it out of the library and photocopied the whole thing (horrors!). My kids loved that black-and-white version so much that, now that I'm a grandmother, my son wants it to read to his own son. Thank God it's going to be republished! This is probaby the only book that our entire family has loved for so long. It is delightful and funny and warm. And it appeals to everyone because nobody gets to escape the problems that the kid with the mixed-up sleep schedule poses. I am still known to roar "Beebee bobby!" like a lion!

5-0 out of 5 stars My Nine-month old daughter loves this book!
I found an old copy of this book in my Mom's attic and I'm glad it's being re-published. It's a great children's book about a bird that makes noise at night at the zoo and the animals don't like it. Not only does it have lots of funny animal noises to make (which my daughter loves) but its message is about sleeping at night and staying awake during the day. (If only it were that easy!) ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Another Winner From Mark Crilley!
Akiko's back! As a reward for her rescue of the Prince in the previous books, King Froptoppit rewards Akiko by sending her (And her pals Mr. Beeba, Spuckler, Gax, and Poog) on a trip to The Intergalactic Zoo. Unfortunately, once the owner finds out 'Kiko is an "Earthian" he kidnaps her and adds her to his private collection...

Mark Crilley does his usual excellent job; The writing is brisk and fun, and the illustrations are excellent. Akiko is probably one of the most likeable characters I've read about in a long time. The book itself is beautifully designed, and the hardcover is a great value. Highly recommended! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars My Visit To The Zoo
This book was very interesting, and I think this is a great book for kids to read. This informational, yet very interting, and fun to read book, tells kids a lot about animals. Even though this does talk a lot about information, I enjoyed it, and I think many other kids will to.
I would recommend this book for children of all ages, because of the information that it sends out, and the way they turn it into a wonderful story. My favorite part of the book, was when they were telling me about all the different kinds of monkeys and all the indangered species. I hope that many children will read this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great message, but not a five star book...
I appreciate the message that this book sends, in teaching children about endangered species. The book spends most of the content in providing information on the animals in their habitats, yet tries to pass the information off in a story. I think the facts provided are wonderful for children to learn, and the illustrations do help lure the children into asking questions, but overall the book lacks a little in keeping a child's attention. Not quite a five star book, as a result, but very worthwhile information on endangered animals. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Zoo Faces (Farm Faces, and other of the Cuddly Cloth Books)
Like Clare, we needed multiples of these books, too ... just in case. Our 13-month old likes the fringey horse's mane (Farm Faces) and the silky elephant's ear (Zoo Faces). It's definitely the sleepy-time snuggly of choice. And it's something to look at, too!

5-0 out of 5 stars Zoo Faces -- a necessity at bedtime
Our first child, Charlie, first fell in love with Zoo Faces when he was just 3 months old. At the time, I told my sister-in-law (an experienced mother) that this infant loved books, and she just laughed. But when she saw Charlie chortle with glee at Zoo Faces, she was convinced! It must be something to do with the book's 3-diimensional characteristics. It is produced with colorful, different textured cloths layered to create sweet depictions of various zoo animals -- a lion, a tiger, a giraffe, an elephant, etc. Charlie is now 13 months old, but has not lost his affection for Zoo Faces. In fact, this book is now his virtual 'blankie'. Charlie requires Zoo Faces in order to go 'night night' or to take a nap. He is particularly fond of the last page, the penguin, which he folds so that the soft, silky penguin flipper presses against his nose. In this way, he sucks his thumb and calms himself, inevitably going to sleep peacefully. Our first copy of Zoo Faces was a hand-me-down. We were perfectly content with this one copy until we were on vacation recently. At the airport, the security gate almost 'ate' Zoo Faces! With this incident, we realized how vulnerable we were, having only one copy of this book. Since then, I've been trying to purchase a second, back-up copy to no avail. Finally, tonight, I've signed onto Amazon.com as a last resort and am relieved to learn we are in luck! I realize our testimony may be a little far-fetched for most parents. But, for us, Zoo Faces has been our most important parenting tool. We won't leave home without it!

5-0 out of 5 stars **What a beautifully constructed book!!**
Zoo Faces is one of the best cloth books I have found. The animals are bright and interesting. The pages are soft and great for chewing. Thanks, Amazon.com.

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific baby's first book for supervised play
My son has loved this book since he was 2 months old. First, to look at as I turned the pages, then as something he could "read" himself. Easy to chew on and washable, it's a great first book. It's a great toy for travel, fitting easily into a diaper bag.

The penguin's bow-tie did come off, however, so I do not leave it with him unattended. (I later reinforced the smaller sewn-on items just to be safe). ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Fabulous Night Out.....
"Last night at the zoo there was nothing to do..." What do all those bored animals do to entertain themselves after everyone's gone home? Well last night they hatched a plan and decided to escape from the zoo and see what life in the big city was like. A monkey steals the keys from the sleeping night watchman and lets everyone out of their cages. The seals and a walrus cover the money problem with all the coins that have been tossed into their pool. The chimp raids the lost and found for clothes so that all the animals can disguise themselves and blend in and off they go. They board a downtown bus and begin the adventure of a lifetime. First they splurge on dinner at a fancy french restaurant where their "animal" manners and loud noise gets them thrown out. Then on to a disco where they dance the night away. Finally hungry and tired, they stop at Joe's Diner for a late night snack before catching the bus and heading home..... Michael Garland has authored a wonderfully creative adventure that will send your youngsters imaginations soaring as they watch zoo animals, not all that well disguised in shirts, hats, ties and dresses, go out for a big night on the town. His charming rhyming text is only outdone by his bold, expressive, larger than life illustrations and kids will enjoy poring over the artwork and finding all the special humorous details. Perfect for children 3-7, Last Night At The Zoo is a delightful, entertaining romp that's sure to become a family favorite.

5-0 out of 5 stars AN ANTIC ANIMAL DELIGHT
Youngsters will smile in wide-eyed pleasure as they discover the shenanigans that went on one night at the zoo when there was nothing to do.

"No Tiger had growled, no lion had roared. The monkeys and zebras were idle and bored."

So to relieve the monotony of their evening those wily and wooly animals decided they needed a night on the town. Not to worry about money as the seals and walrus had cash that people had tossed into their pool.

Of course, these critters are smart enough to know that they need to disguise themselves so off they go to the lost and found where they find shirts and hats. Next, they boarded a downtown bus that took them to the center of the city where there were bright lights galore.

Dinner was first on their agenda, although their table manners caused a snooty French waiter to flip his toupee. Dancing at Club Boogie worked up their appetites again, so it was off to Joe's Diner for sodas and ice cream.

Author-artist Michael Garland has not only penned a lilting rhyming text but created bold, colorful, hilarious illustrations - think a gimme-capped walrus attacking a banana split! ... Read more
