Book Description

Daddy's taking us to the
zoo tomorrow,
zoo tomorrow, zoo tomorrow.
Daddy's taking us to the
zoo tomorrow.
We can stay all day.

Now you can go along too, as Tom Paxton's classic song comes to life in this boisterous picture book. Rhythmic verse leads you through a wild kingdom where animals burst from every page. Monkeys are scritch, scritch, scratchin', and kangaroos are hop, hop, hoppin', making every moment an adventure.

Karen Lee Schmidt's lively, irresistible illustrations show the animals up to all sorts of mischief. And with the easily played melodies included, this musical menagerie is every bit as fun as a trip to the zoo. Youngsters will want to "stay all day" -- and come back again and again!

3-0 out of 5 stars It all depends on the type of person you are...
You will like this book more if you are comfortable singing to kids from books. And normally I am, but I read this one to my son in front of my inlaws and I just didn't have it in me to sing the words. It could be considered a very catchy book, with all the repetition, from page to page and line to line, or it could seem like a really long way to have to get through a book about visiting the zoo. I think it could also change for you depending on the mood you were in on that day. The best part was the idea that the dad took the kids to the zoo and the mom got to stay home and have some "me" time!

5-0 out of 5 stars Read it again, Mommy, please?
Our two year old cried when we had to return this to a library. Such passion is normally limited to books about big machines... What a find! A great song with detailed, happy illustrations and plenty of opportunities for sound effects to keep our little guy fascinated. "Again, again! Read it again, Mommy!"

5-0 out of 5 stars You'll be singing it all day!
I work at a daycare and we have 15 kids between 18 months and 3 years. This is by far their favorite book! The song is extremely catchy and the pictures that go along with it are fun and simple enough the even the littles ones can recognize the animals. Since they know all the words they don't mind missing some of the song to roar at the pictures of the bear and lion, or scritch, scritch, scratch like the monkeys! Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars GOING TO THE ZOO
This is a wonderful book!Full of bright colors, silly pictures, and catchy rhythms. This is my 2 year old's favorite book. We have to read it at least 3 times a day.I highly recommend this book to anyone who lovesto read to their children.See you at the "Zoo, zoo, zoo". ... Read more

My 3 year old son found this book one day while waiting the the pediatricians office. He loved it so much I read it to him 3 times before the doctor came in. The language in it was above his level in most cases but the pictures just enthralled him. I will be ordering it for him! :) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars What a winner!
What a wonderful story! It combines family values, traditions and multigenerational love. Our children love to hear the grand dad sing on the free tape that comes with the book and we all enjoy the story. Even the illustrations are exciting. It's easy to imagine just such a story taking place in any family. Thank you Mr. Smith for bringing 'values' back to children's books!

5-0 out of 5 stars I really like this book!
I really REALLY like this book. Mostly because it's about my brother Ricky and I and because it's a story that my great grandmother used to tell. And because the pictures remind me of when I was small. Now we read the book to my youngest brother all the time and he loves it!. It's great. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A zany and entertaining picture book
Dancing Granny is a zany and entertaining picture book by Elizabeth Winthrop about a special bond between a grandmother and her grandchild. On a visit to the zoo, the Granny is asked "may I have this dance?" and celebrates with an eager bear, six silly monkeys, and others for a fun-filled time. Joyous and colorful illustrations by Salvatore Murdocca beautifully showcase the singsong rhyming verse which characterizes this delightful and original story of fun and nonsense. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Peter's nameless sister
This is the worst book in the Snappy series, but it is still cute. Peter Penguin is jealous of his new sister, who never gets a name in this book. He goes running away and gets lost. He loves to chat to himeself and his baby sister chats back and finds him. Then he returns home and they chitter chatter all day long together. Simple story, cute drawings. The problem i have with it is the baby sister does not get a name. My 9-month-old does like to chew on Peter's round black head though. Not a bad book, but other's in this series are a lot better like Penny Polar bear, Lucy Lobster and Tiny Tyanasourous. ... Read more

Book Description

Fresh, original and wonderfully inventive, this fabulous picture book introduces a very exciting new talent to the picture book scene.

Slow Loris lived in a zoo, but he didn’t care for it very much. Slow Loris wasn’t even his real name, but that was what everyone called him because he was a very slow loris. In fact he was so slow that it took him ten minutes to walk from one end of his branch to the other, and half an hour to eat a satsuma. Everyone thought that Slow Loris was really boring, but he didn’t care one bit. Why? Because he had a wild, secret life of his own.

A simple and witty text, together with striking and humorous artwork, makes this an exceptional picture book.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Most Popular Request
I purchased a copy of "Slow Loris" purely by fortunate accident(mostly because I fell in love with the illustrations)at a bookstore in Oxford England. I brought the book home to Western Nebraska U.S.A. as a gift for my 2 year old son. He's 3 now and it's still his favorite book, and my favorite to read to him. Mr.Deacon writes with a simple brilliance that ignites the imagination of adult and child alike. His illustrations are nothing short of wonderful and they carry his story with a delicious simplicity that conveys the emotions of his "Loris" at every twist. A beautiful and modern example of the concept that things are not always what they seem, "Slow Loris" is truely a JOY; every single time. We're VERY anxiously awaiting his next book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Exquisite
I will not recap the charming story as the previous reviews have done. I will instead comment on the lush art, appealing to adults and children. As a zoo docent I was especially impressed at how well the artist captured the movements of the slow loris. Buy this book to teach your children about the empathy and care we must exhibit towards animals and to inspire their own artistic impulses!

5-0 out of 5 stars A delight!
My two year-old granddaughter and I giggled all the way through this book. It is a hoot from start to finish. The illustrations are wonderful, and, like a previous reviewer, I particularly like the part about "Slow Loris" not being his real name, but merely what humans had named him. The illustration where he is caught in his nightly revels is priceless!

5-0 out of 5 stars This book deserves MUCH attention!
SLOW LORIS is a wonderfully illustrated and engaging book. During the day, the slow loris moves very slowly (boring those zoo viewers that see him - takes him an hour to scratch his bottom), but at night he's a fast moving uber-animal. This book is great for parents and their children-in-tow that have gone to the zoo and found the animals less than interesting. It gives a humorous explanation for their lack of action, and introduces (granted, in a highly fictious way) the concept of an animal being nocturnal.

It is also a humane and intelligent twist that Deacon points out that "slow loris" is not the name of the starring animal - just the name imposed by humans. He is an individual. Hopefully, this will prompt children to not objectify and generalize about the aniimals they see.

This story is extremely beautifully illustrated - having graduated from art school, and having written and illustrated children's picture books myself gives me MUCH apprecation for Mr. Deacon's talents.

Highly (obviously) recommended!! In fact, I'm jealous. ... Read more
