Book Description

5-0 out of 5 stars Asterix and the Silver Star
First published in French in 1970 as AstĂ©rix chez les HelvĂȘtes,
Asterix in Switzerland was first published in English in 1973.

A visitor from Rome interrupts Varius Flavus, the Roman Governor of Condatum (Rennes), from one of his depraved and revolting orgies.
Quaestor Vexatius Sinusitus has been sent by Julius Caesar, as a Treasurer for the Provinces, to audit the Governor's accounts.
As Flavus has been rather freely crooking the accounts, he poisons the Quaestor to get him out the way.

An ill Sinusitus secretly sends for the Getafix who is a famous healer, and Getafix of course takes with Asterix and Obelix, and our two heroes are sent to Helvetia (Switzerland) to fetch the one thing that can save his charge, the Silver Star (Edelweiss).
Varius Flavus is desperate to ensure that the Quaestor is not saved and sends word to his friend, the equally corrupt Governor of Genava (Geneva) that Asterix and Obelix are to be stopped at all costs.

Once more the author Goscinny writes a witty and satirical adventure, poking gentle fun at the customs of Switzerland, their punctuality and clocks, fondues and Swiss Cheese, yodeling and banks. We get to observe an ancient `International Conference of Tribal Chiefs', almost as useless and hypocritical as the United
Nations of today and even get to meet the famous Michelin man when our friends stop off at a repair station to mend a broken wheel.
Once more a fantastic classic, from the famous Goscinny and Uderzo.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my favorites
There is one thing that I like in this episode more than in any other - drawing!Landscapes of Switzerland in this book truly show Uderzo's talent.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great comic book!
Bill Waterson is argudably one of the best comic writers out there. Even through his retirement, he has made great books of past comics featuring his Calvin and Hobbes characters. I laugh and laugh at these comics he creates and I sometimes wonder how he comes up with such brilliant ideas sometimes with the storylines of some of the strips.

Calvin, one of his best known characters, is the trouble-making kid in the school. He is funny and imaginative and likes to make funa and games with his "real" pet friend Hobbes. Through the comics, you can see the relationship between a stuffed animal and a human.

In this comic though, Hobbes "comes to life" in Calvins eyes. The things that Calvin can sometimes get involved in is so hilarious and sometimes out of this world.

I guarantee that anyone that loves comics will fall in love with this one and should definitely buy this book to start their collection of classic comics.

All of Bill Waterson's comic books are very well done and very professional. His work is his life and it shows the time and consideration it took to make these characters come to life. Thank you Mr. Waterson for creating such a great comic and thatnk you people for reading my review!

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the best Calvin and Hobbes book!
This is the best Calvin and Hobbes book! Bill Waterson sure makes lots of funny comics. My favorite parts of this comic is when Calvin's family goes camping and it rains so hard they cant even make a fire, Also this comic has Calvin's Uncle Max. I didn't really like that part. After that they never showed Max again. Some more parts I love are when Calvin and Susie both have to do a report together and Calvin does terrible, and I love the part where Calvin creates a transmogrifier pistol and he gets stuck being an owl when it breaks. Oh and don't forget about Rosalyn, that was funny too when the police came and Calvin got in really big trouble. I think this book is a must-buy for everyone who loves Calvin and Hobbes

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the More Popular Books
First, and foremost, it must be known: All Calvin and Hobbes are great. Yukon Ho!, however, is one that tends to rise above the rest. It's true this is one of the earlier books and includes the 9 verse tune The Yukon Song and has all the great cartoons, but why it seems to be more popular, I cannot say. All I know and can guarantee is that it's funny and is everything Calvin and Hobbes. From the beginning of the book where Calvin is convinced that he and Hobbes have traveled into the future (nope not with a cardboard box) it is too easy to appreaciate Calvin's motives. He's not after the secrets of genetic cloning or the what politician is waging wars with other countries. He's looking forward to floating cities and telling people in the present what he saw. And this is the real beauty of Calvin and Hobbes shows through. It's the quest of a six-year-old to have a good time with a furry friend. Rarely in a comic strip has such devotion and integrity of a kid been so accurately portrayed.

You'll chuckle at Calvin's dad 's explanation of the workings of a carburetor and the hilarious camping trip to a desolate rock that Calvin's entire family embarks on. Rosalyn appears again, and yes, again terrorizes Calvin. Calvin digs up dirt on his dad, which compromises his father's high-ranking position of dad. Calvin tries and fails to be the next Houdini and Susie and Calvin are assigned an a project together. All the way to the new and improved transmogrifier, it's pure magic, purely Calvin and Hobbes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Watterson Rules!!!
bill watterson is an amazing cartoonist. When I opened this book I was immeadiatly sucked in. His drawings are amazing and the water color he uses is great. once again he has created a comic book that anyone can enjoy. calvin and hobbes is not the ordinary slapstick humor you find in most funnies, it has a refreshing touch of witty charm. I love these comics and i would recommend them to anybody.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Boy and His Tiger
"Yukon Ho!" is a collection of daily and Sunday "Calvin and Hobbes" comic strips. Since the dates have not been left in the strips, it is difficult to determine the time frame involved. But that doesn't really matter, because this strip is as fresh and funny today, years after Bill Watterson ended the strip, as it was back in the day.

If you have never heard of Calvin and his adventures with his stuffed tiger, Hobbes, pick this book up today and become hooked with the rest of us. ... Read more

Dave Barry's humor speaks for itself. Barry on dating:"These are nonstereotypical times we live in, by which I mean thatit is the responsibility of the man to ask for the date, and theresponsibility of the woman to think up excuses that get progressivelymore obvious until the man figures out that the woman would rather chewon a rat pancreas." Barry on falling in love: "When twopeople have been on enough dates, they generally fall in love. You cantell you're in love by the way you feel: your head becomes light, yourheart leaps within you, you feel like you're walking on air, and thewhole world seems like a wonderful and happy place. Unfortunately theseare also the four warning signs of colon disease, so it's always a goodidea to check with your doctor." 5-0 out of 5 stars HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHHAHH (etc.)
Another classic Barry. The title alone should give it five stars, but the content overwhelms my funny bone.

At one point, I was falling out of my chair I was laughing so hard!

oh well....5 STARS

4-0 out of 5 stars Early Barry. . .
Though not as good as his later works, definitely worth buying, though 'Dave Barry's Guide To Life' is also availiable on Amazon.com and contains this and three other works of similiar quality and length by the same author, while being slightly cheaper than this edition alone.
Recommended.

4-0 out of 5 stars Breaking Up Or Getting Engaged?
If you've made it to that chapter (Chapter 4) without laughing so hard you have beverages coming out of your nose, please check your pulse. You may already be dead.

Anyone who has ever read a Dave Barry article can appreciate his incredibly dry wit and hilarious sense of humor. Barry always seems to capture subjects that are serious, but manages to put a funny twist on them. Not only does he nail the concept of marriage AND/OR sex in this book, but the illustrations by Jerry O'Brien are the perfect compliment. The outrageous diagrams on "How to French Kiss" remind me of my life just last week, er, I mean high school.

This book is loaded with helpful tips for both men and women. For instance, Barry feels that the best bet for a new bride on how to get along with her mother-in-law is drugs. If only more people could read this book!

This book has something in it for everyone. If you are about to get married, the chapter entitled "How to Have a Perfect Wedding No Matter What" will definately come in handy. Of course, those of you already married, chapters "How to Argue Like a Veteran Married Couple" and "Children: Big Mistake or Bad Idea?" will, most definately, be of interest.

Barry's book is a fairly quick read, and would make a nice addition to anyone's book collection, if not for the mere fact that it is a great conversation piece. Any fan of Dave Barry will love it, and if you live on another planet, and have never heard of him, this is a great book to start with. You can't help but laugh!

4-0 out of 5 stars A funny worldwide reality
Barry continues being one of my favorite. His approach to human marriage relationships is no doubt almost a law (a little bit exagerated, maybe). Chapters 6 7 8 and were my favorites. I've just married and it was sort of an x-ray of my situation, except by the fact that have always believed in what he precisely satirizes: we don't need to spend a fortune in a full-of-critics-and-unpleasant people-that will not help you solve your infinite problem-night. His statements I think are of an almost universal reality. The only inconvenient for us latin american readers are perhaps the local jokes He is very serious (I'm not kidding)in telling us: Life is very simple and worth enjoying! Why screwing it up?

3-0 out of 5 stars not his best work by a long shot
Although I thoroughly enjoy his writing, this book left me feeling ripped off. His subsequent efforts have been far superior. If you're a Dave Barry fan and you want to continue to love him, skip this one. ... Read more

Book Description

The second volume in the most eagerly-anticipated publishing project in the history of the American comic strip: the complete reprinting of Charles M. Schulz's 50-year American classic, Peanuts.

Our second volume begins with Peanuts' third full year and a cast of eight: Charlie Brown, Shermy, Patty, Violet, Schroeder, Lucy, the recently born Linus, and Snoopy. By the end of 1954, this will have expanded to nine. Linus still doesn't speak (except, on a few occasions, to himself, à la Snoopy), but Schulz begins laying the foundation for his emergence as the most complex and arguably most endearing character in the strip: garrulous and inquisitive, yet gentle and tolerant. And he evens acquires his "security blanket" in this volume!

Meanwhile, Lucy, an infant just a year ago, has forcefully elbowed herself to the front of the cast, proudly wearing her banner as a troublemaker or, in Schulz's memorable phrase, "fuss-budget." The strong, specific relationships she sets up with each character further contributes to making her central to the strip. (She has earned her cover status on this volume.)

Charlie Brown is clearly in transition. Although his eventual, best-known persona (the lovable, perpetually humiliated round-headed loser) is in evidence in many strips, his brasher, more prankish side as seen in the previous volume (foreshadowing Bill Watterson's future Calvin) shows up, too.

This period's significant new character is Pig-Pen, who would remain one of the main cast members throughout the decade. And then there's Snoopy. To readers unfamiliar with the early days of the strip, Snoopy's appearances here will no doubt come as the biggest surprise. Although Snoopy has started talking/thinking to himself, he does no imitations (except for one brief shark impression), he doesn't sleep atop his doghouse (much less type or fly a Sopwith Camel), and has no fantasy life—in fact, he doesn't even walk upright! But as we know, he is merely biding his time, and his evolution continues its fascinating course within these pages.

This book collects 730 daily and Sunday comic strips, the vast majority of which are not currently available in any in-print Peanuts collection, and over 400 (well over half) of which have never been reprinted since their initial appearance in papers over 50 years ago. The Complete Peanuts is produced in full cooperation with United Media, Charles M. Schulz Creative Associates, and Mr. Schulz's widow, Jean Schulz. Each volume in the series presents two years of strips along with supplementary material in a three-tier page format that accommodates three dailies or one Sunday strip per page. Award-winning graphic novelist Seth is designing the series so that each individual book is sharply recognizable and yet clearly part of a consistent series. Using archival-quality syndicate proofs for virtually every strip in its history, the series boasts the best-looking, crispest reproduction for a classic comic strip ever achieved. The volume's introduction is by revered news journalist Walter Cronkite.

Peanuts is the most successful comic strip in the history of the medium as well as one of the most acclaimed strips ever published. Charles Schulz's characters have become American icons. A Charlie Brown Christmas is as much an annual holiday ritual for families as It's A Wonderful Life. A United Media poll in 2002 found Peanuts to be one of the most recognizable cartoon properties in the world, recognized by 94 percent of the total US consumer market and a close second only to Mickey Mouse (96 percent), and higher than other familiar cartoon properties like Spider-Man (75 percent) or the Simpsons (87 percent). In TV Guide's "Top 50 Greatest Cartoon Characters of All-Time" list, Charlie Brown and Snoopy ranked #8. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars "Get Fuzzy": The next animal comic thing.... Generation
I'm a big fan of comic books (I previously made two new series) and I can say now that "Get Fuzzy" is a quality comic strip. The art is wonderful, the jokes are terrific and there is a wide variety open for the characters...it differs from Garfield in some ways: 1. The animals talk and the owner can understand them and hear what they're saying 2. The dog can talk and the cat is a bit hyper and active in some ways 3. The owner isn't as nerdy as you think. Actually, Garfield is good for people who like humor that occurs with talk backs and slapstick; whilst Get Fuzzy is a strip for people who like cunning and half-witted humor...All in all, read Get Fuzzy. You'll love its humor if you own a Siamese cat, any cat, or a dog, and the art will blow you away. If you love Garfield, you'll love this--I know I did.

5-0 out of 5 stars Unbelievably funny!!!!
This is my absolute favorite comic strip in the world. The only other strip I'll bother to glance at is Dilbert, but it still does not compare to the humor contained in this book. What would your pets do and say if they could, well it's all here. All you'll be crazy if you don't fall in love with Rob Wilco, Bucky Katt, Satchel Pooch, and Joe. I read this book and lost all track of time whick is exactly what I needed in this highly stressful world... Get it, get it, get it. Thank you Darby Conley

5-0 out of 5 stars Bucky and Satchel are Awesome
This is the best and funniest comic strip. I don't understand all these people writing things like "this represents everything that is wrong in America." These are characters. Personifications of animals with a brilliant outlook. If you take it so seriously that you can't see that you should just resign yourself to being miserable. I find this so much fun to read and laugh at. You should too!!!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Smells Like Road Kill.
I'll keep this simple. Bad, poor, done before, looking for a better comic.

1-0 out of 5 stars Slow Witted.
What is the praise this strip recieves? That Kat is so not funny. There is something that I have never seen before, an annoying cat. Where did Conley come up with such a brilliant idea? I can't believe that an annoying cat has never been thought of before for other comics. Please somebody put this strip out of its misery, or else just realize that this is a less than average strip. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best retrospective collection
The announcement last November that Bill Watterson would be retiring his comic strip Calvin and Hobbes at the end of the year should not have surprised anyone--at least, anyone who has read the recently released The Calvin and Hobbes Tenth Anniversary Book. Like Gary Larsen's Pre-History of The Far Side, this volume provides a retrospective collection selected by the author, with notes on the origin and evolution of his creation. Both cartoonists annotated the books themselves, explaining the writing process and the business of cartooning. Larsen, though, as happy with his medium--his retirement was a factor of creative burnout rather than frustration with the limitations of the comics page of today's newspaper. That frustration with the four panel strip was the reason for Berke Breathed's early retirement, and is quite likely the reason for Watterson's as well. Watterson believes in the comic as a real art form--and in his hands it often was--but the dynamics of the business, both the physical limitations on the drawing and the way the economics is split between artist and newspaper with a syndicate go-between, restricted the full expression of his art.

The Tenth Anniversary Book is not a depressing collection, although it is quite serious in its examination of the ten years of the strip. Watterson reveled in his creation, and the work that he produced was always of the utmost quality. This collection has some of the most joyful moments of the past--Spaceman Spiff is there, as well as Stupendous Man, the Replicator, and the dreaded Babysitter. The amazing thing isn't that Watterson is retiring, but that he could spend ten years producing such work as fresh and imaginative as his debut.

While I am sad to see Waterson and Calvin and Hobbes retire, I have hope that we have not seen the last of either. The rise of the "graphic novel" and its acceptance in the United States (the form has always been popular in Europe [Tintin, Asterix] and Japan [magna too numerous to list]) offers Watterson the format that he deserves, where he can be enjoyed and appreciated as one of the most innovative sequential artists of the later 20th century.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great comics, great commentary
Bill Watterson picks out some of his finest cartoons for this book, which would be reason enough to buy it. The additional commentary, though, makes it by far the best Calvin and Hobbes book. It was interesting to see what Mr. Watterson thought of his various characters, how he came up with different ideas and what he found interesting in certain stories. This book just confirmed to me that Calvin and Hobbes is one of the funniest, most original and most meaningful comics in recent years. It was interesting to hear about what Mr. Watterson is like as a person, as he reveals some of his personal interests and opinions through the commentary. Finally, finding out the background for Spaceman Spiff, Tracer Bullet, Miss Wormwood and the other Watterson inventions was interesting. Definitely worthwhile to buy, read and then read again and again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Insight Into Bill Watterson's Mind
Bill Watterson hasn't drawn Calvin and Hobbes in almost 10 years, but fortunately, every strip in the series' run can be found in numerous compilations. The most impressive of these is the 10-year anniversary volume which contains some of his favorites. Watterson was a recluse and rarely gave an interview, but in this book, he is very generous in his insights into many of the comics he had drawn over the years and is particularly not bashful at taking shots at the trends of reducing the modern comic strip to almost illegible size and particularly the licensing of Calvin and Hobbes, which he very successfully opposed. It's not a surprise that he called it quits soon after this book came out.

Watterson comes off in his rants on the art of cartooning as a very bitter man, but a bitter man of unquestionable integrity. I totally agree with him that licensing characters and sticking them on "overpriced knick-knacks nobody needs" does cheapen the strip. As an example, "Dilbert" never affected me like it did after you couldn't turn around without seeing another Dilbert coffee mug, Dilbert stress ball, Dilbert burrito (I'm not making that up, folks), Dilbert hygiene product (OK, I made that up), etc. I got sick of looking at Dilbert and my interest in the strip waned.

But I love going back and looking at old Calvin and Hobbes strips. Sometimes I wish that Watterson would pick up his ink pen again and draw C&H againon his terms, but maybe he's just better off letting his creation stand on its own accord.

4-0 out of 5 stars The 10th Anniversary Book
Watterson is one of the greatest cartoonists of our time. Calvin and Hobbes sometimes share their deep insights on the values of life. Sometimes their personal outlooks on life are reflected off Watterson's views, which is a great skill to have. Along with the comics, the book is filled with accounts the author wrote, explaining his feelings about the comics and what they mean to him. The book is funny and adventurous, and when you're through reading it, you might have learned a lesson.

5-0 out of 5 stars Watterson is king
There are a lot of comics that have faded away over the years and tracking them down after they're out of print is sometimes next to impossible. I don't think Calvin and Hobbes is going anywhere for a while even though Watterson has ended the strip but if it does you'll probably kick yourself for not having a complete Calvin and Hobbes collection and this book is the crowning piece in that collection. Bill Watterson, a guy who keeps his opinions to himself (finding an interview with him is like a treasure hunt) gives you an inside look at the strip, Priceless. ... Read more

Now that Bill Watterson has retired from drawing syndicated cartoons, the only way to get our Calvin and Hobbes fixes is through his book collections. The 10th Anniversary Book is particularly notable, because in addition to getting some of his most wonderful cartoons, we also gain a sense of Watterson as a person.

Approximately one-tenth of the book contains essays about matters great and small--from cartooning to life--and stories about the inspiration behind some of his greatest strips. Not surprisingly, Watterson shines through as a being of considerable integrity, and the cartoons gain in depth thanks to his commentary. And, of course, the cartoons in the other 90% of the book are alternately side-splitting hilarious or touching. Happy Anniversary, Bill, and good luck with whatever it is you are doing now! ... Finally, finding out the background for Spaceman Spiff, Tracer Bullet, Miss Wormwood and the other Watterson inventions was interesting. Definitely worthwhile to buy, read and then read again and again.

5-0 out of 5 stars A SAD DAY INDEED
The day that Bill Watterson retired was a sad day indeed.

No more Adventures of Spaceman Spiff

No more wild wagon rides over a cliff.

No more disastrous camping trips in mud and rain.

No more school research projects written by Hobbes.

No more trips to the principal's office.

No more bombarding Susie Derkins with water balloons.

No more Moe the bully.

No more contests of will with Rosalyn, the killer baby sitter.

No more deep philosophical discussions between a six year old boy and his stuffed tiger.

But wait! Watterston has left his calling card, "THE CALVIN AND HOBBS TENTH ANNIVVERSARY BOOK."

Yep, there he is. He's kidnapping Susie's doll. Now he's paying 25 cents ransom to Susie to get Hobbes back, and Hobbes, the traitorous tiger lecher, liked being with Susie.

Now Calvin's making duplicates of himself so he can get into even more trouble. He's piloting his fighter plane and destroying his school. His dinner is attacking him and his mom just doesn't understand.

There's his dad relaxing on his day off by riding his bicycle 20 miles before breakfast in a sleet storm. There's Calvin again, reading the latest issue of his chewing gum hobbyist magazine.

Thanks for this book, Bill Watterson, with Calvin and Hobbes in all their glory and your commentary to boot. I'd never have made it "Cold Turkey." You're not such a bad guy after all.

Bill Watterson, a guy who keeps his opinions to himself (finding an interview with him is like a treasure hunt) gives you an inside look at the strip, Priceless. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I AM A LARSEN JUNKIE!!! I NEED MORE!!!
Larsen is the world's greatest cartoonist. Too bad he retired. I have envelopes filled with his cartoons clipped out of the newspaper (10+ years ago!) that I still can't bear to throw away. So I suppose this book was a good idea. It will take up less space than several bulging envelopes.

For younger people who can't remember his cartoons in the paper every day, you need to hurry up and start collecting his books so you can always be within arm's length of a smile or a laugh.

Also, I love the story about the "Jane Goodall Cartoon"

5-0 out of 5 stars The Far Side is Life
We've all seen Far Side cartoons, stuck on office doors and cubicle walls, and said, "I don't get it." Then we've learned a little and come back, this time laughing raucously. This book is filled with all sorts of Far Side gems, most of which any average yutz can find hilarious. If you like the Far Side, or if you just like a glimpse at that which is odd, warped, and mind-bending (or, in other terms, Larsonesque), you should have this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars WHO DOESN'T LIVE IN THE FAR SIDE
Something unique happens whenever you read one of Gary Larson's Far Side collections. You find yourself thinking! How often can you say that about a one panel comic strip. Larson's ingenious humor can make people laugh who don't even have a clue about what they're laughing at!

All I can say is that if you haven't visited The Far Side...then get there today! And once you do...you'll want to come back again and again and again.

Book Description

Realism lends humor and relevance to the story lines enacted by bernerd Jason Fox and his family in the enormously successful syndicated comic strip FoxTrot. Unafraid to tackle timely topics of the day, FoxTrot finds wry humor in such issues as SARS, video game violence, boy bands, Internet music piracy, and a multitude of pop culture themes. In fact, FoxTrot is so inextricably intertwined with pop culture that creator Bill Amend was interviewed in the premiere issue of The Lord of the Rings Fan Club Official Movie Magazine, thanks to a series of strips about Jason's fanatical excitement over the movie trilogy. And not only does FoxTrot incorporate pop culture into its story lines, the strip has actually become a pop culture icon: It has been used as a question on the game show Jeopardy! and as an answer in the New York Times crossword.Am I a Mutant, or What! is the newest FoxTrot collection, featuring strips that ran from late 2002 through mid 2003. Amply documented as a favorite with readers, FoxTrot runs in more than 1,000 newspapers, and previous FoxTrot books have sold more than two million copies. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars LOVE, LOVE that Fox Trot
OK, it is a little sad that I give a comic strip a 5 star rating.

But, Fox Trot is just so wonderful. This comic strip is tender, funny and absolutely wonderful.

My one complaint: These mini-books are NEVER long enough. Bring back the treasury type books - please....

Book Description

The Party, After You Left brings together the last nine years of cartoons from Roz Chast. Together these drawings, which originally appeared in the New Yorker, Scientific American, Redbook, and other publications, constitute a spot-on record of our increasingly absurd existence. As the twenty-first century begins, we can only be grateful that Roz Chast is here to tackle some of the tough themes of the times: genetically altered mice, birthday parties from hell, and comfort drinks in the age of insecurity.

5-0 out of 5 stars VERY Amusing!
Very much like her earlier books (same format, same humor). As I've gotten older, I only relate more to her humor of the mundane truth of our lazy, neurotic, full of junk lives. A lot of the cartoons in this book are about parenthood, so I expect I'll like it even more once I go through that. One cartoon is called, "An excerpt from Men are from Belgium, Women are from New Brunswick" and in another cartoon as a woman tries to convince her mother to wear the new bathrobe she sent, mom insists she likes the old one, "YOU remember it- I made it out of the washcloths that I took from hotels we stayed at when you were a little girl!" In seventh grade I discovered Roz Chast's books "Unscientific America" and "The Four Elements" and loved them. I've been waiting nearly 20 years for another of these books and "The Party, After You Left " tickles me just as much as those did.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Retrospective...
If you are having a bad day, just open this book and check out a few pages. It will turn your day around and put you in a good mood. So funny and on target. A lot of depth - makes you think while you are chuckling. ... Read more

Book Description

In the fine tradition of scorched earth, take no prisoners political satire, The Three Little Pigs Buy the White House pokes fun at a certain trio of Republican politicians who are living high on the hog.

Watch out: these little pigs have no problem replacing brick with straw when it comes to your nation's security.

And don't be afraid of the Big Bad Wolf, that is, if . . . uh . . . we can find him.

Written and illustrated by celebrated Bizarro cartoonist, Dan Piraro, The Three Little Pigs Buy the White House is the perfect mockery of politics as grimy as bacon grease.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great fantasy for the gullible!
I was dissappointed that this book was so obviously rooted in fact but totally without substance. Yes there is a Bush family but where does the author get the set ups, the gags, etc.

5-0 out of 5 stars I laughed, I cried (for our country)
SO hysterical and right on target, after reading a friend's copy I immediately ordered it for my child. I only pray that volume II will be "The Three Little Pigs and the door that hit them on their way out of office".

The quick synopsis is: The 3 little pigs are Dubya, Rummy and Dickie. Dickie and Rummy keep telling Dubya what to do and he just does it. They are building their own houses of bricks stolen from the country, while they rebuild the rest of the country with mud and straw (pacifying the country bumpkins with $300 a piece). The big bad wolf comes along (bin Laden) to blow the house down with his WMD (Winds of Mass Destruction), and then they try to divert the country's attention to the New big bad wolf (Sadam). The illustrations are exceedingly well done and the story is right on target.

4-0 out of 5 stars Hilarious!
This book is a satire of the Bush administration using the framework of the story "The Three Little Pigs." The book parodies Dubya's lack of knowledge about ANYTHING, Cheney's affinity for making money by screwing the little guy, Rummy's bloodlust, and more. I recieved a copy as a gift and plan on purchasing it for a few friends. ;-)

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT!
I Love It! This books should be required reading for everyone. The PERFECT history of GWB. Perhaps the "compassionate conservatives" should take this on their next month long vacations. Maybe they'll learn something while living off of everyone elses money in their brick houses!!

1-0 out of 5 stars SICKENING!
This thing looks like it was ghost-written by any of a number of leftist losers -- Al Franken, Michael Moore, take your pick -- whose asinine beliefs were dumped by the roadside where they belonged when the Bush administration finally took the White House away from the nightmarish fiasco of the Clintons. I like the Bizarro comic well enough, but if these are Piraro's true political beliefs, then he should be ashamed of himself. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This deal is great!!
I have read tons of GARFIELD book, GARFIELD comic strips, and owns tons of GARFIELD things, but out of all the books i have read these three are my favorites and for such a great price its irresistible!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Garfield **3 TIMES** as large!
3 books in one at half the price is an awesome deal if you ask me, and combines with the quality of the book and the well provided laughter make it almost hard to put down. Normally you can finish a Garfield book in under a half hour but this book gives you over an hour of enjoyment at a great price...!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Must get starter book.
I remembered buying each certain volume for nearly $... each back when I was still in middle school. Now that they have the 3-pack volume out, this is definitely worth buying.

- It saves you money over buying each volume individually
- 3 in 1 fun
- Great way to start collecting the whole Garfield's series
- Great for anyone! Kids, Adults, or even grandparents that love comic books
- Great way to make your kids love reading

Once you buy one, you will want to buy the other 3-pack volumes as well! When you read, be sure to wear a diaper, because it might make you pee in your pants. :)

5-0 out of 5 stars Top Marks for the Top Cat
I love Garfield and always have. I have noticed the change in him as he has gotten older but nothing has changed in his personality. I love all the characters in the series but one thing I love is the expressions that the characters have in the strip. Be it Jon looking wide eyed when Garfield will do something odd, or Jon looking smug and Garfield looking, well, looking normal is enough to me make laugh. I think he is at his best with his Chandler Bing comments. He will say nothing for the whole strip and then at the very end will give a little comment, maybe even 5 words and he will have me laughing my head. I think that is when he is at his best.

I think it is incredable that after 20 years he is still funny. Jim Davis is a genius and to be constantly funny, and be funny in three little pictures takes something special.

The fattest cat in the world and the best. Garfield rules!

5-0 out of 5 stars When One Garfield Isn't Enough!
I loved this book. Being one of the earlier books in the Garfield collection Jim Davis had many fresh ideas to work with. You may be surprized that Garfield looks slightly different , but the attitude stays the same. If you want to see Garfield very different, see fat cat 3-pack number one. If you love Garfield, This is a must have.

This book features: Mondays, The caped Avenger, The fence, Nermal, Odie, and of course Garfields sick addiction to food .

Enjoy!

If you liked this one I reccomend Fat Cat 3 pack: 4, 5, and 7. ... Read more

Book Description

With its expressive art and humorous, often philosophical musings, Mutts has become one of the most popular comic strips in the world, with an estimated daily readership of 50 million. Peanuts creator Charles Schulz called Mutts "one of the best comic strips of all time." Simpsons creator Matt Groening concurs: "Mutts cheers me up every day. It's not only sweet, simple, and funny-a rare combination-it's also the best drawn comic strip around." This comprehensive volume, the first to focus on the entire range of Patrick McDonnell's art, includes not only a vast collection of his Mutts strips, but also sketches, paintings, and wood carvings by the man who has made Earl the dog and Mooch the cat such beloved contemporary icons.

McDonnell's text-which serves as autobiography, comic history, character explication, and art history rolled into one-lets readers into his private universe to observe his process, influences, and passions. The result is an intimate and revealing look at the complexities of the cartooning craft and the forces that drive his own creative endeavors. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very, very good, but not much is new here
One of the best new comic strips to come down the pike in the last ten years is Patrick McDonnell's Mutts.

Cute doggie Earl and rascally Mooch have an understated charm that's reminiscent of the relationship between Snoopy and Charlie Brown before Snoopy took to the air in his imaginary Sopwith Camel.

Mutts is a down-to-Earth examination of how pets fit into the lives of their masters and vice-versa.

McDonnell's sensitivities derive from his simple yet eloquent style that draws upon the love and empathy that the strip's characters have for each other.

The book itself is a wonderful reprinting of many of his best daily and Sunday color strips. Also included are notes that cite the sources of the title panels of the Sunday strips that pay homage to old record albums, comic book covers, famous works of art, and movie posters.

The true fan of the Mutts strip will consider this book a 'must-have'. However, I have to admit that if you've been purchasing the Mutts collections printed so far, there's scant new material in this book. For a book of its size, the autobiographical information is very lean. There was probably more to read about McDonnell in a recent Star-Ledger newspaper interview than in this book.

I bought it for myself as a frivolous, self-indulgent treat. You might not want to do likewise.

5-0 out of 5 stars Yesh! A Book Better Than a Pink Sock!
Patrick McDonnell's work is among the very best gracing the newspaper comic strip pages today. There is a genuine quality to his work; an honesty that shines forth from the funnies. It is truly wonderful to see Abrams honor McDonnell and "Mutts" with this absolutely terrific monograph. The design of the book is scrumptious. Each page is carefully considered and I love the way that the designer combined sketchbook doodles and finished comic strips. It was also great to see references given for the Sunday page logo panels. They bring you just a little bit closer to the work.

And the work is really the main event here. The reproduction quality is glorious, giving us a sneak peak at what originals might look like. The color--oy, what color--is beautifully printed. If you can't see the original drawings, this book is the next best thing. The selection of work is great. They chose some of Mutts' very best, including the wonderful ice cream cone gag! That one remains one of my very favorites.

There are some really nice insights here, though they're not overblown. Like the strip itself, McDonnell writes in a true, succint way, then he lets his strip do the talking. You really get a sense of how invested he is in his creation.

If you're a Mutts fan, you can't pass this book up. And if you know of any Mutts fans who don't yet have this book, you can bank a bunch of karma by buying a copy for them. They'll love you more than a pink sock for it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Yesh!
This is the ultimate MUTTS book. In addition, it's a wonderful description of the creative genius that Patrick McDonnell applies to every detail of his art. For those of us who are decidedly not artistic (me, for instance), the book is educational and thought-provoking: hey, what did happen to the "artistic" side of my brain? Note: if you are a MUTTS fan, be sure to visit the official website at muttscomics.com.

5-0 out of 5 stars Whish I could give 10 stars for a beautiful book!
Often artists who draw for newspaper syndication rightly complain about how their work suffers when it is compressed into the small, ugly world of newsprint. If you've ever wanted to see your favorite strip full-size and gorgeous, and "Mutts" is that strip, then you will want to buy this book! McDonnell's art has never been more beautifully displayed on the printed page. For instance, in this wonderfully oversized book some color Sunday panels take up two whole pages while gaining, not losing, crispness and vividness in color, clarity and detail - elements lost in small newsprint.

Loyal afficinadios of McDonnell's "Mutts" will not be able to resist this fascinating book. Anyone interested in the evolution of and creative process behind comic strips will enjoy the work. The price may seem steep at first, but the sheer quality of the book as well as its content make it a bargain.

First, the book quality is first-rate: the glossy pages are heavy and clear, the binding is tight, and the illustrations leap off the page. The layout (well-conceived and artistic, as befits the subject) and accompanying text provide an enthralling history lesson of comic art in the 20th century (and how that history has influenced McDonnell - he even shows certain "Mutts" strips against other strips to illustrate where certain of his ideas originated). Of course, the book specifically displays the talent, sensitivity and humor of McDonnell. Finished strips are grouped into themes, e.g, characters (it's fascinating to see Ozzie come to "life,") or content (the important and endearing "Shelter Stories" gets its own section); these are accompanied by intriguing sketch work, doodles, preliminary drawings, and the like. (NB: for the reviewer who wondered why there were two bios in the book description; the other gentleman is an "editor" of sorts; he helped McDonnell compile work, organize it, and provide history. So it is relevant information, though it could be better labeled.)

In sum: for those "Mutts" fans who have waited to get a "little sneak peek" at the person responsible for "Mutts" magic, this book will be on your holiday gift list! It's already on mine!

I'm not sure I'd recommend *this* book for the "uninitiated" because of price and detail. Buy some of McDonnell's other collections first (I believe there are eight or nine) and let yourself fall in love with Mooch, Earl, Ozzie, and the rest of the "Mutts" menagerie. Then get this book and dive into this amazingly detailed look at the wonder and genius involved in creating the world of "Mutts" and a revealing look at the creator of that world.

5-0 out of 5 stars Duh, it's Mutts, of course it's good
I love this book. I love all his books. You see so much of yourself in the humor he conveys with all of the animals, not just Mooch and Earl. I do have one question though. "What does this book have to do with John Carlin?!?!?!?" See the above review referring to the following: "John Carlin has been a lawyer, college professor, art critic, music producer, and TV director. He is currently organizing a survey of 20th-century American comics, cartoons, and comic books for the Museum of Contemporary Art and the UCLA Hammer Museum in Los Angeles. Cofounder of the media design and production company Funny Garbage, he is also founder and creative director of the Red Hot Organization, a not-for-profit music and video production company." 5-0 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Guide for the Ultimate Simpsons Fan
This Episode Guide has EVERYTHING that you can ever imagine in an episode guide. From Seasons 1-12, it has details on every single episode. Its got quotes, what Bart writes on the chalkboard in the intro, couch gags, special guest voices, writers, screenshots, episode number (i.e. 8F05), air date, scene selections, runtime, and a whole lot more. All of this for only about $30, what a bargain.

Now I have seen every single Simpsons episode up-to-date but sometimes I forget about an episode or about a quote from a certain episode that I forget but now all I do is look over at my episode guide, track the season down and from there I find out what I needed. This book isn't just for looking for episodes and finding quotes or stuff like that, it can also be entertaining and a time killer (I mean that in a good way). So if you're stuck in the car going on a vacation, you can open this Episode Guide up and have yourself a laugh and maybe even find out some useful stuff that you didn't know about. This is a strong recommendation for any Simpsons fan.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Simpsons Forever!
I have the first book that covers seasons 1-8 and it is an absolute must-have for Simpson fans not in front of the internet who want to remember specific shows and lines from the shows at their fingertips. It has brought hours and hours of joy to my friends and I. I think the guy from Belgium is just bitter and might want to consume some Duff.

1-0 out of 5 stars The Simpsons - The Final Rip Off
Yes, I was a great fan of The Simpsons. The show originally appeared to be a critical cynical approach to American and western society. It showed a family who's main entertainment is television, a father who's an alcoholic with a boring job, a son which main interest is to pull jokes out of sheer boredom, a daughter who is terrified by it all escaping in intellectualism and a mother who stays married whatever happens. Let's say a nice portrait of an ordinary family.
However, the show became a parody of itself, it can be watched on many levels one being a cynical approach to consumer society and the kind of people it breeds.
Now The Simpsons has become itself a money maker, throwing gadgets all over the place, exploiting fans who probably already bought the first two volumes, now offering a boxed offering (what about the fans who bought the first two volumes: they can forget about the added greeting cards; it should be the other way around). And anyway, let's face it, The Simpsons are out of ideas, now only making the show for the big bucks, distancing themselves ever further about what the original ideas were all about.

3-0 out of 5 stars Ehhh...
I'm not buying any more Simpsons Episode Guide books until the freakin show is cancelled....which at this rate seems like never! I suggest only buying the version that contains seasons 1- 8 (8 being when it started to peter out anyway...Coinciding with the death of the Great One, Phil Hartman)

5-0 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Simpsons Reference!
These guides are so thorough in covering each episode of the Simpsons, any fan will want to buy them all so he/she may as well get them all at once in this fun box set. These books list each episode in every season from the shorts aired on the Tracy Ullman show through season 12. For every episode there is a brief description, the date it originally aired, list of writers/guest voices, tons of quotes, interesting tidbits and things to look for, selected dialog, screen shots, and even the message on Bart's chalkboard in the introduction. In addition to the information on each episode, the books include short features on almost every character (even those that appeared briefly in one episode), Itchy and Scratchy shorts, a list of when Homer says "D'oh!" or "Mmmm...," a list of the "couch gags" during the theme song, you name it. These are the ultimate guides to the Simpsons that every fan will refer to regularly. They also include a handy index to help when one is trying to find that one special episode he/she craves. Even if you already have one of these books, this is an excellent set to own and it's a good idea to have a spare book because you will no doubt wear out at least one! ... Read more

Book Description

Sherman is a carefree shark; he's carefree because he doesn't know any better. Fillmore the Sea Turtle, Sherman's sidekick, is a philosophical sort who does what he can to make up for Sherman's lack of sense. Ernest is a fish of indeterminate species with the technical savvy and dubious intentions of an ace computer hacker; in fact, he is one. Sherman's wife, Megan, possesses a ruthless yet nurturing nature. Hawthorne, the macho hermit crab, is not actually a hermit, but he is actually crabby. Thornton is an expatriate polar bear who drifted into the tropical lagoon on a wayward iceberg and decided to stay. Captain Quigley, the token human (or "hairless beach ape," in the local dialect), is bent on Sherman's destruction. This ambition may be traced to the fact that Quigley is a crusty old fisherman and Sherman is a fish. Or it may be traced to a long-ago incident in which Sherman ate Quigley's leg.In addition to satirizing human behavior, Sherman and his friends occasionally have to contend with the threat of encroachment by the beach apes on their unspoiled tropical home. The strip has been lauded by activist groups for promoting the importance of marine conservation. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars brilliant
Gary Larson is by far the most genius, the most innovative cartoonest ever to hit the world. This gallery has a forward by Robin Williams and tons of Larson's best work. You can't not love his sense of humor (and definitely check out the Prehistory of the Far Side).

5-0 out of 5 stars !The far side of histercleness!
Gary Larson in this includes some great ones like theres a dog with like 50 people following him he says, "I can't smell a damn thing." Plus there's a foreward by king of comedy from mrs. Doughtfire Robin Williams. Here's somhing he says in it. "I really like the way he draws humans. Maybe someday scientists will dig up his cartoons and think that the 20ith century man has a rarely big nose and buck teeth."

5-0 out of 5 stars If you like The Far Side......
If you are a fan of The Far Side this book sells itself!!!![....]

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant cartoons from a gloriously warped mind
Every one of Gary Larson's books has been a work of twisted genius, and "The Far Side Gallery 4" continues that tradition. A collection of hundreds of Larson's distinctive cartoons, this book will sometimes shock, sometimes mystify, but always amuse.

Larson's overall vision is a bizarre, yet oddly coherent blend of fantasy, science fiction, horror, theological speculation, anthropological/zoological observation, and cultural criticism, all distilled through the mind of a master parodist. His trademark technique--the anthropomorphization of the unexpected--is on abundant display in "Gallery 4." Larson's is a world in which squirrels read newspapers, alien juvenile delinquents abuse human astronauts, tapeworms go on vacation, bowling pins hold cocktail parties, and buzzards give poetry readings.

Larson will take on the most taboo subject in order to get a laugh, and he usually succeeds--often brilliantly. Trichinosis, obesity, conjoined twins, suicide, political protest, Native American culture, cryogenics, suffocation, old age, serial killers--nothing is off limits in "Gallery 4." Larson even makes fun of his own cartoon series.

Another of the pleasures of reading "The Far Side Gallery 4" is the fact that you never know who you'll run into next. Larson's deranged imagination captures a whole host of fictional and historical figures: Albert Einstein, Humpty Dumpty, Tito Puente, Dr. Jekyll, Stephen King, and many, many more. When the floating head of Zsa Zsa Gabor threatens the crew of the starship "Enterprise," you know you're in Larson territory.

The short foreword by Robin Williams (he describes Larson's vision as "a National Geographic special on Prozac") is an added bonus to this collection. For fans of "The Far Side," this is an indispensable collection; for those who haven't yet sampled the insane genius of Gary Larson, this is a great introduction.

5-0 out of 5 stars it's perfect
This book is really funny. Gary Larson has really outdone himself this time! One I started reading it, I couldn't put it down. Then when I finally did, I was halfway through the book! Everyday I read a comic to refresh my humor in the morning. Ha-ha ... Read more
