Book Description

Like the rare mountain Chihuahua and the short-lived balloon animals of harshest Africa, there are sights in this world that we just don't experience often enough.Consider the unbridled thrill of happening upon an endangered pallid sturgeon or a courteous DMV employee, and you'll understand the palpable excitement we feel about the selections in this year's Far Side Wall Calendar.Every one is a cartoon that has never, ever graced a page in any of The Far Side Wall Calendar's sixteen previous incarnations. There's even the odd cartoon that's never been in any calendar - period - and a good four that haven't found their way into a calendar since the big hair and gold chains of the eighties. We're talking about truly rare sightings here (hence, the clever title.) And lest you think "rare" translates into "so-so," let us assure you these are genuine, classic Gary Larson cartoons. You know, the kind that not only invoke involuntary guffaws, but also make you want to hang them on the wall for, oh, about a month. So put down the binoculars and pick up this calendar.Rare has never been so easy to find - or so dang funny. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars I hate the same old things from the same old people
Just like how barbara phillips of NC hates seeing the same old things from Larson, I hate seeing the same old reviews from the same old people. Makes you wonder what is going on when someone writes two similar reviews for the same book, slightly different in languge, but promoting other authors. Does this person work for another publishing company or is she related to the other people? I don't know, but I do warn people to think twice about basing your decision to buy on customer reviews. You never know who is writing them. Maybe even this review will get posted.

1-0 out of 5 stars FORGET THE FAR SIDE
Why doesn't the publisher get someone with new funny material instead of rehashing the same old Far Side toons. How many times can you listen to the same "toons" before your nerves are shot.
Please get someone with new material in there!... The bookstore humor section is the same over and over again. I want a single-panel cartoon like Speedbump, Reynolds Unwrapped, or Reality Check ...These are the 3 best cartoons on the market that I've seen

...

5-0 out of 5 stars As Always, Wonderful!
This is a classic Far Side delight. The calendar is a great gift for friends and family and for yourself. I highly recommend!

1-0 out of 5 stars Far Side Calendar isn't far enough ...away!
I have always enjoyed the Far Side cartoons and every year
purchased the wall calendar and Engagement book. Unfortunately,
this year's engagement book is very disappointing. The cartoons
are not amusing. In fact, I found the book as a whole to be very
depressing. I will not use this calendar this year because it is
such a "downer" and plan to buy a different engagement book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Even caviar tastes terrible if you eat it too much
Larson is a genius, no doubt. He gave us great work. BUT I'm so sick and tired of seeing the same cartoons over and over and over again just packaged differently. Do we cartoon lovers look like idiots? If Larson is done doing cartoons, that's fine, BUT get NEW material in there.
I've seen other cartoonists who can fill this bill quite nicely. Dana Summers' Bound and Gagged is good. Put some of this stuff out. A new cartoon that I really like a lot, Reynolds Unwrapped by Dan Reynolds, is as good or better than The Far Side. Surely, your company can come up with some new material instead of selling us the same thing over and over. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great laughs!
I reccomend this book to anyone, it's full of humour and ideas. Every cartoon is a garantee laugh.

5-0 out of 5 stars cracking cartoons
This book will have you laughing all the way to the toilet...What you need to do is gather round your friends and family, even the old ones and enjoy this book together because it's quite fantastic. I started to look at his books at a very young age and was inspired to draw my own cartoons, which i have done for many years. So hopefully in a couple of years time I will be up there with the grandad himself! Richard

5-0 out of 5 stars One of his best.
Gary Larson has most definitely outdone himself this time. This book is truly brilliant. Every drawing gets his point across and will make you laugh until you cry. Larson is undoubtedly the funniest cartoonist to ever live. Once you buy this book make certain that you do not have anything planned. Because once you start reading you will forget all about your plans. A must have for any Far Side fanatic or for anyone who likes to laugh. ... Read more

Book Description

Someone once wisely said, or maybe some wiseguy once said, that comedy is tragedy plus time.True, to be sure. But what then is tragedy minus time? That is, what do you have the moment before the moment of misfortune? Ahh, what you have there, friends, is Trouble Brewing. Each of the full-color cartoons that grace this conveniently sized mini wall calendar captures a frozen moment in time - a tipping point - the calm before the calamity, which - in the world of The Far Side - translates directly to hilarity. The Far Side Trouble Brewing 2005 Mini Wall Calendar: small enough to hang on a miniature refrigerator, big enough to change your life. Well, maybe not that big. But it is awfully funny. ... Book Description

Darwin figured it out 150 years ago. The Theory of Natural Selection. Survival of the fittest. Remember that from junior high biology? The strongest, smartest, fastest, most attractive members of an animal species succeed in winning mates, thus assuring the survival-and gradual evolution-of their breed. Think about it. . .and then feel good about yourself. After all, you've survived. You spring from a long line of winners. Well done! But what comes of the less fit. . .those that nature does not select? You know. . . the slow-witted and weak, the dim and the just plain dorky. Well, but for the work of one man, we likely would never know. Luckily, Gary Larson has chronicled the mishaps, maladies, and miserable failures of these less-than-alpha males and females in The Far Side. By paying special attention to the peculiar mating rituals practiced by The Far Side's subjects (dogs, cows, clowns, apes, nerds, etc.), Larson has over the years developed what amounts to the definitive treatise on inept courtship behavior. Call it Larson's own Theory of Natural Rejection. Each week, this little gem of a calendar presents a rare, behind-the-scenes glimpse at nature's chronic romantic underachievers. It's like that show Blind Date except starring insects, aliens, farm animals, and cavemen. Read these cartoons. Laugh if you must. But above all, learn. Learn from their mistakes. Because like it or not, the continued viability of the species depends on you. We thank you, and Charles Darwin thanks you. The Far Sider is a registered trademark of FarWorks, Inc.

Book Description

Sure, it's been a funny year for business. What with accounting scandals, top execs being carted off to the big house, and a stock market with more dips than a Baskin Robbins, we can hardly hold down our job (such as it is) for all the uproarious (or is it hyserical?) laughter. But because you can't count on those kinds of hilarity and hijinks every year (thank God), there The Far Side Out To Lunch 2004 Wall Calendar:Like stock options during those heady dot.com days, its value (in laughs, at least) just keeps going up and up. Every month's cartoon is a shining example of some workplace absurdity that's really funny. Not that guys trading their cufflinks for handcuffs isn't funny enough, but we mean Gary Larson funny. You know, the kind that can get you through a long 3-5 stint with your sense of humor (if not your portfolio) intact. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Increadebly funny, especcially if you work at an office.
This collection has a Far Side comic strip by the infamous Gary Larson in each week in a calendar, so theres around 52 strips, all in color. Most of the jokes here are work jokes or animal jokes and somewhat inbetween. The jokes in it are histeracly funny and you will enjoy everybit of this calendar, which to say is nice and has enough space to put notes and a telephone area on the last page (just so you know that its just not the strips your getting here). Highly recomended for Far Side fans (and dont forget the two book complete collection!)

5-0 out of 5 stars A good way to start the day
Since the FarSide isnt in newspapers anymore this is a great way to enjoy Larson's humor. Always great, always funny. A nice way to get through the day.

Book Description

Birds do it, bees do it, even cocktail-swilling sheep do it. . . everybody's doing it in this year's The Far Side Mating Rituals 2006 Mini-Wall Calendar. Or attempting to do it, anyway. In the land of The Far Side, the mating game is more often a comedy of errors. A lovesick duck tries to woo a decoy. . .a jilted buck receives a "John Deer" letter. . . a tongue-tied Tarzan blows his pick-up line. In this conveniently sized monthly calendar, each full-color cartoon serves as a sort of surrealist dispatch from the front lines of love's battlefield. The consensus report? If all courtship went the way it does in The Far Side, we'd have ourselves one big, fat, empty planet. The Far Sider is a registered trademark of FarWorks, Inc.

Book Description

Remember the good old days of the 1990s? The go-go economy was unstoppable.Unemployment hit historic lows. And hotshot dot.commers hopped jobs like those Sex and the City women hop beds."Old Economy" bosses courted tech-savvy employees with stock options, casual dress codes, and free office soda.Nothing was gonna burst this bubble... Oh, how times have changed.Forget about cashing in those stock options - in these days of bankruptcies and bail-outs, rampant right-sizing, and corporate scandals, the average worker is likely to toil all day with crossed legs rather than run the risk of being reprimanded for taking an occasionaly bathroom break. What's a put-upon post-boom desk jockey to do?We have the answer. The Far Side Out To Lunch 2004 Mini Wall Calendar (please resist the urge to call it down-sized) offers a dozen of Gary Larson's funniest work-related cartoons all in a package that fits neatly on a cubicle wall. Each glance in its direction will send your mind on a mini-vacation, or - at the very least - remind you that there is something funnier than the guys in accounting trying to dress casual on Fridays. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars too far?
Is it just me or is the May cartoon supposed to be a parody of Sept. 11? It shows a giant fly crashing into a windshield company skyscraper, with people dangling out the windows and falling to the street. I doubt even Larson would want to make a joke of this, but somehow it's a little to creepily close for me. Besides this the calender is great as always. ... Read more

Book Description

Four hundred million years ago, a lowly lungfish hauled itself out of the primordial ooze on flimsy front fins, surveyed the verdant earth, took a gulp of air. . .and started looking for some action. Not a whole lot has changed since then. The drive to find a suitable mate has been hardwired into every slippery, slimy, feathery, and furry beast that's ever walked, wriggled, flown, or swum the earth. From limpet to lounge lizard, every life form-low and high-seems constantly and conspicuously on the make. Needless to say, the methods employed in this ceaseless effort to score are not always pleasant to witness. But, in the name of science, one man has made a lifelong study of the natural world's bizarre and often pathetic mating rituals (yes, including those of the naked ape). Cartoonist Gary Larson may well be the world's preeminent paleo-animal-romanticologist. At least, he would be if there really were such a thing. The cartoons collected in this year's batch of Far Side calendars are populated by amorous ungulates, passionate porcupines, courting cavemen, flirtatious flies, and that most rare and endangered species of all. . .nerds in love. The quest for love on the Far Side may not leave you with a lump in your throat and a tear in your eye, but it will leave you laughing, and remind you of that timeless truth so often forgotten in the heights of passion. . .love makes fools of us all. 5-0 out of 5 stars Wildlife Preserves: A semi-true Far Side collection
Wildlife Preserves, the 10th Far Side Collection is a very informitive book. I bought it because The Far Side is my favorite comic strip and I have 10 others. But, I never thought I could learn so much from a comic strip. I found out about Cowmen Miranda and the woolly watermelon. I learned about when naturalists found The Seccret Chipmunk Burial Grounds and how the spitting cobras live at home. If wou want ace all you history quizes, this book will be helpful (It could happen).

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty funny book.
Wildlife Preserves, the tenth book in the Far Side series, is not quite as funny as the rest of the books in this series. That is not to say that it is not a funny book. There are several of my all time favorite cartoons in this book and an average Gary Larson is still far funnier than any other cartoonist in the world. However, there were not quite as many laughs as some of his previous books. I still like this book and feel that there are enough laughs to make it a worthwhile addition to the Far Side collection. There are also enough laughs for me to recommend it to someone who needs a good laugh. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your time here, Far Side fans.
For those of you asking "WHAT IS THIS?" I honestly have no idea what this is either. But, I'm willing to make a guess. I think this "assortment" is a set of all of the books in the Far Side collection. I'm curious if it includes the Galleries and the 10th aniversiary book, though. I'm telling you people out there, don't waste your money here. In fact, don't buy any of the books here, unless your very desperate. Heres the secret to getting your hands on all these Far Side books with as little money as possible. Go to used book stores! I found that people turn in a ton of these books, and there usually in perfect condition. You may think your saving money here at Amazon, but back when far side books were first coming out, the list price was $5.95, unlike the $7.95 today. So the $6.36 that Amazon offers doesn't save you that much. Someone jacked up the prices when Larson became popular. Anyway, at used book stores, they will charge you half the list price or sometimes less. I got my hands on some old ones, in great condition, for $2.50 each just recently. BTW I'm talking about the smallest type of Far Side books. Not the Galleries. I've seen them at used book stores too, but I don't recall the prices. I've nearly completed my collection. This is the poerfect strategy to get your hands on any popular newspaper cartoon books. I've nearly completed my collection. You may end up buying a few fresh and new, I did as well. Depending on shipping, I suggest making those desperate buys here. Trust me on this, it will save you big $$ (Don't get me wrong, Amazon is a great place to buy books, but not when your planning on a collection like this.) Good Luck!!

1-0 out of 5 stars What is this?
I am a Far Side fan and has almost all the books as long as Amazon sells them.

US$417.00 plus shipping is a lot of money. you can buy every far side book and it does not cost as much? so can someone who owns this tell us WHAT IS IT?

with only one positive review, and no picture referene, I am very skeptical. maybe it has Gary Larson's signature or manuscript or something really expensive.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful deal for the funniest books around!
This is a great deal, because all of the Far Sides together make me laugh more than I ever have before. Gary Larsons wit and humor is just like Jerry Seinfield. It makes you want to get up and write your own book, and it is so funny and humor filled that it can be enjoyed by people of any age. I also reccommend that you buy the Far Side Desk Calendar. $416 dollars is a darn good deal if you ask me!

1-0 out of 5 stars a tad PRICEY, perhaps...?
I like the Far Side, but I refuse to pay 417 dollars for it. What IS this?!? ... Read more
