5-0 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Guide for the Ultimate Simpsons Fan
This Episode Guide has EVERYTHING that you can ever imagine in an episode guide. From Seasons 1-12, it has details on every single episode. Its got quotes, what Bart writes on the chalkboard in the intro, couch gags, special guest voices, writers, screenshots, episode number (i.e. 8F05), air date, scene selections, runtime, and a whole lot more. All of this for only about $30, what a bargain.

Now I have seen every single Simpsons episode up-to-date but sometimes I forget about an episode or about a quote from a certain episode that I forget but now all I do is look over at my episode guide, track the season down and from there I find out what I needed. This book isn't just for looking for episodes and finding quotes or stuff like that, it can also be entertaining and a time killer (I mean that in a good way). So if you're stuck in the car going on a vacation, you can open this Episode Guide up and have yourself a laugh and maybe even find out some useful stuff that you didn't know about. This is a strong recommendation for any Simpsons fan.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Simpsons Forever!
I have the first book that covers seasons 1-8 and it is an absolute must-have for Simpson fans not in front of the internet who want to remember specific shows and lines from the shows at their fingertips. It has brought hours and hours of joy to my friends and I. I think the guy from Belgium is just bitter and might want to consume some Duff.

1-0 out of 5 stars The Simpsons - The Final Rip Off
Yes, I was a great fan of The Simpsons. The show originally appeared to be a critical cynical approach to American and western society. It showed a family who's main entertainment is television, a father who's an alcoholic with a boring job, a son which main interest is to pull jokes out of sheer boredom, a daughter who is terrified by it all escaping in intellectualism and a mother who stays married whatever happens. Let's say a nice portrait of an ordinary family.
However, the show became a parody of itself, it can be watched on many levels one being a cynical approach to consumer society and the kind of people it breeds.
Now The Simpsons has become itself a money maker, throwing gadgets all over the place, exploiting fans who probably already bought the first two volumes, now offering a boxed offering (what about the fans who bought the first two volumes: they can forget about the added greeting cards; it should be the other way around). And anyway, let's face it, The Simpsons are out of ideas, now only making the show for the big bucks, distancing themselves ever further about what the original ideas were all about.

3-0 out of 5 stars Ehhh...
I'm not buying any more Simpsons Episode Guide books until the freakin show is cancelled....which at this rate seems like never! I suggest only buying the version that contains seasons 1- 8 (8 being when it started to peter out anyway...Coinciding with the death of the Great One, Phil Hartman)

5-0 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Simpsons Reference!
These guides are so thorough in covering each episode of the Simpsons, any fan will want to buy them all so he/she may as well get them all at once in this fun box set. These books list each episode in every season from the shorts aired on the Tracy Ullman show through season 12. For every episode there is a brief description, the date it originally aired, list of writers/guest voices, tons of quotes, interesting tidbits and things to look for, selected dialog, screen shots, and even the message on Bart's chalkboard in the introduction. In addition to the information on each episode, the books include short features on almost every character (even those that appeared briefly in one episode), Itchy and Scratchy shorts, a list of when Homer says "D'oh!" or "Mmmm...," a list of the "couch gags" during the theme song, you name it. These are the ultimate guides to the Simpsons that every fan will refer to regularly. They also include a handy index to help when one is trying to find that one special episode he/she craves. Even if you already have one of these books, this is an excellent set to own and it's a good idea to have a spare book because you will no doubt wear out at least one! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Sci-fi meets Mythology meets Top Cow!
Michael Turner struck gold with his earlier work on Witchblade. I was nuts over his work on that former book. Beautiful women and ultra-detailed backgrounds. Then when he left that book, I was very upset for a long while....

That was until my Fathom Hardcover Deluxe Collected Edition arrived in the mail! His work here is better than ever. Even more fluid than his work in Witchblade - although I have to say that there are pieces in Witchblade that will remain very special to me.

Top Cow puts in the highest production quality into their comic-books. This book is the perfect example of holding a summer-blockbuster movie in your hands. The effect is really THAT mind-blowing. Bill O'Neil's writing is overly wordy at times and there are many hanging plotlines left at the end of this volume. But after the whole experience of reading this book, well, I don't think you'll care about all its faults. Ultimately, the book is about Aspen Matthew's search for her true identity - human or water-being, warrior or pacifist, princess or destroyer.

If you like the movie, "The Abyss", you'll love this book. Or if you've ever wondered about the mysteries of the deep, the Bermuda Triangle, or the existence of pre-human intelligence, you'll love this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nothing Else Compares
This is the best graphic novel/comic series period. I feel the creativity of Michael Turner is unmatched anywhere. If you only buy one graphic novel this year, this needs to be it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome new comic series!
This looks like the beginning of something fantastic! Something big.

The lady starring in this new comic has NO CLUE just how special she is! She is about to find out, THE HARD WAY.

Book Description

It seemed like a simple enough idea at the time. Now that their arch-enemy, Doctor Doom, had seemingly perished, the Fantastic Four would journey into his nation of Latveria, disassemble its war machine and set its oppressed citizens free. But what appeared to be a black-and-white situation quickly turns a murky shade of grey, and Reed Richards and his family find themselves besieged on all sides - both by those they thought of as their allies, and by the very people they are trying to save. And in the awful aftermath of their authoritative action, three of the Four must contend with the defenses of the afterlife - and storm the gates of Heaven itself to rescue a fallen teammate. They've faced Galactus, the destroyer of everything; now, they face the creator of everything, as the FF are reunited in the hereafter. Plus: The Fantastic Four have a lot to answer for - and when you're trying to regain the trust of cynical New Yorkers, is associating with a certain misunderstood wall-crawler really a wise move? 5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant
Arguably the best storyarc to hit the Fantastic Four in years, Unthinkable solidifies Mark Waid (Flash, Kingdom Come) as one of the best comic writers in the business today.Doctor Doom returns to face the Fantastic Four, but unlike every other time he fought them this time he is using magic as opposed to his scientific prowess. He starts off by sending Reed and Sue's son Franklin to Hell to be tortured, while giving similar punishment to the rest of the FF.All this while Reed "Mr. Fantastic" Richards tries to find a way to stop him and save his family.Waid's characterizations of the FF and Doom respectively are nothing short of brilliant; Reed isn't just the super genious as he is known for as we see him blaming himself for the events because he thinks he's too idiotic to work magic.Waid's characterization of Doom is great as well as we see how hell bent for vengeance against the FF he is, and the shocker of an ending is brilliant as well. The art by Mike Wieringo is great as well, even if it looks a little cartoony. All in all, Unthinkable is one of the best storyarcs to hit the FF in years.

5-0 out of 5 stars Unthinkably enjoyable
Well, where to begin?

I went into 'Unthinkable' thinking that Mark Waid, wahtever he had planned, was going to do this one just right.

I used to think Wieringo's art was too cartoonish, much like Ed McGunness, but then I wised up.

'Unthinkable' was by and far, one of the most wonderfully crafted Marvel books I've yet read. Ive only recently jumped on the Marvel bandwagon bgecause I realized that DC still writes stories that are ordained and meant fro children--despite the greats like Green Arrow's ward's drug addiction, the brutality of the Joker on killing Jason Todd and others. But Marvel's dogma is simply more adult.
Example: How many DC villains would voluntarily (much less inhernetly know how to) banish thier nemesis' son to Hell?
But all comparisons and contrasts aside, Unthinkable gave the reader a wonderful insight into the mechanics of Reed Richards mind--his disdain for magic, his analytical nature, his utter disgust at Doom. Waid himself said that 'Unthinkable' is one monumental character flaw--Reed Richards-wise.
Doom was, as always, impeccably well-written and drawn. Hard to believe his newest armor is made from his dead lover's skin!
The new spins on Susan, Ben, and especially Johnny were great. It's so nice to see Johnny and Ben just horsing around instead of actually fighting and ruining the good ol' Baxter Building. Plus, Ringo has a certain way of making Johnny look more...educated, yet adolescent...welcome additions all around.
Stephen Strange's presence was nice, and the segway by Grimm when the FF are on their way to Latveria is a good thing to establish character.

All in all, the arc that effectively puts Doom on the shelf for the forseeable future is a well-crafted piece of comic art. Mark Waid has done it again. ... Read more

Book Description

Sherman is a carefree shark; he's carefree because he doesn't know any better. Fillmore the Sea Turtle, Sherman's sidekick, is a philosophical sort who does what he can to make up for Sherman's lack of sense. Ernest is a fish of indeterminate species with the technical savvy and dubious intentions of an ace computer hacker; in fact, he is one. Sherman's wife, Megan, possesses a ruthless yet nurturing nature. Hawthorne, the macho hermit crab, is not actually a hermit, but he is actually crabby. Thornton is an expatriate polar bear who drifted into the tropical lagoon on a wayward iceberg and decided to stay. Captain Quigley, the token human (or "hairless beach ape," in the local dialect), is bent on Sherman's destruction. This ambition may be traced to the fact that Quigley is a crusty old fisherman and Sherman is a fish. Or it may be traced to a long-ago incident in which Sherman ate Quigley's leg.In addition to satirizing human behavior, Sherman and his friends occasionally have to contend with the threat of encroachment by the beach apes on their unspoiled tropical home. The strip has been lauded by activist groups for promoting the importance of marine conservation. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars brilliant
Gary Larson is by far the most genius, the most innovative cartoonest ever to hit the world. This gallery has a forward by Robin Williams and tons of Larson's best work. You can't not love his sense of humor (and definitely check out the Prehistory of the Far Side).

5-0 out of 5 stars !The far side of histercleness!
Gary Larson in this includes some great ones like theres a dog with like 50 people following him he says, "I can't smell a damn thing." Plus there's a foreward by king of comedy from mrs. Doughtfire Robin Williams. Here's somhing he says in it. "I really like the way he draws humans. Maybe someday scientists will dig up his cartoons and think that the 20ith century man has a rarely big nose and buck teeth."

5-0 out of 5 stars If you like The Far Side......
If you are a fan of The Far Side this book sells itself!!!![....]

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant cartoons from a gloriously warped mind
Every one of Gary Larson's books has been a work of twisted genius, and "The Far Side Gallery 4" continues that tradition. A collection of hundreds of Larson's distinctive cartoons, this book will sometimes shock, sometimes mystify, but always amuse.

Larson's overall vision is a bizarre, yet oddly coherent blend of fantasy, science fiction, horror, theological speculation, anthropological/zoological observation, and cultural criticism, all distilled through the mind of a master parodist. His trademark technique--the anthropomorphization of the unexpected--is on abundant display in "Gallery 4." Larson's is a world in which squirrels read newspapers, alien juvenile delinquents abuse human astronauts, tapeworms go on vacation, bowling pins hold cocktail parties, and buzzards give poetry readings.

Larson will take on the most taboo subject in order to get a laugh, and he usually succeeds--often brilliantly. Trichinosis, obesity, conjoined twins, suicide, political protest, Native American culture, cryogenics, suffocation, old age, serial killers--nothing is off limits in "Gallery 4." Larson even makes fun of his own cartoon series.

Another of the pleasures of reading "The Far Side Gallery 4" is the fact that you never know who you'll run into next. Larson's deranged imagination captures a whole host of fictional and historical figures: Albert Einstein, Humpty Dumpty, Tito Puente, Dr. Jekyll, Stephen King, and many, many more. When the floating head of Zsa Zsa Gabor threatens the crew of the starship "Enterprise," you know you're in Larson territory.

The short foreword by Robin Williams (he describes Larson's vision as "a National Geographic special on Prozac") is an added bonus to this collection. For fans of "The Far Side," this is an indispensable collection; for those who haven't yet sampled the insane genius of Gary Larson, this is a great introduction.

5-0 out of 5 stars it's perfect
This book is really funny. Gary Larson has really outdone himself this time! One I started reading it, I couldn't put it down. Then when I finally did, I was halfway through the book! Everyday I read a comic to refresh my humor in the morning. Ha-ha ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Mortician to Begging Dog: "Now Play Dead."
Before discussing the cartoons (which are wonderful), let me warn you against the miniature paperback version. It is very small, the cartoons are hard to see, you need a magnifying glass for some, the reproduction quality is poor, and the paper is not good. Stick with the hardcover.

I have rated the book as the hardcover version. The only drawback I saw to the 101 cartoons was the lack of a witty introduction (like those in the cartoon books of the New Yorker for business and money).

In a spirit of self-disclosure, I must admit that I do not have a dog now . . . but I have had one in the past. Several of my friends have dogs, so I think I can properly evaluate the book from a dog lover's point of view.

The relationship between human and dog is an especially close one. The humor works well when it alludes to that. For example, in a wordless cartoon, a dog looks resentfully at a man reading a book entitled "How To Be Your Own Best Friend." Another one has a couple in bed with lots of dogs: "If you lie down with pugs, you wake up with pugs." In a third, a woman with two suitcases is seen leaving with the dog while a man inquires of the dog: "Et tu, Baxter?"

Dog-human reversals also work: A dog doctor examines a human and notes, "Well, your nose feels cold."

Sometimes the humor is aimed at the human, such as: A psychic tells a dog her/his fortune, "You will be going for a long walk."

Inevitably cats are part of the picture: Two dogs talking to each other spot a cat walking down the side walk, "Do you want to handle this, or should I?"

Sometimes dogs become just like people as in: A man walks down the street with a dog walking on hind legs holding onto his arm, "She never took to the leash."

What do dogs think of their humans? "They never pushed me. If I wanted to retrieve, shake hands or roll over, it was entirely up to me."

As someone who had a Sheltie, this one got to me: A sheep is leading lots of dogs in a herd, and a man says to another man, "I understand that in your country this thing is done quite differently."

Humor is a window onto our stalled beliefs that keep us from grasping our full potential of progress and joy from each day. Let these wonderful dog cartoons remind you of the potential in everything around you!

5-0 out of 5 stars too funny for words!
I keep this book in my bathroom with some other fun books - I read it every time I'm in there, and I laugh over and over at the same cartoons. People always love going to the bathroom at my place because of it! :- ) Anyway, if you love woofers like I do AND enjoy the New Yorker sense o' humor, you must have this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars The book was hilarious, especially since I love dogs!

5-0 out of 5 stars Adventure
My friend has read it and she said it was really good. I have skimmed through it and look forward to reading it.When I first looked at the book I thought it was amazing. The illustrations are wonderful with their vibrant colors and their sharp details. It is really interesting because it is part comic book and part chapter book. I was excited because here you can get all four of them and in other places you can't. The cahracters are really cool because they each have their own style and personality. I like the names too like Sephie. The names of the places in the book are really cool too like Meridian and Carador. This book is enjoyed by a lot of people.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great little read
This book is a great little read! Crossgen is doing wonders trying to bring new and old readers back to comics. The artwork and storytelling are both done fabulously. I've been looking for a comic that doesn't fit the traditional superhero mould but also has great artwork and story, it's arrived with Meridian.

5-0 out of 5 stars CrossGen genius.
I know this can only be considered a book by very thin circumstances (ie it has a front and back cover and several pages in between) but it had to get some mention. I myself am not really a comicbook kind of guy. Yeah, I do have ambitions to someday have my own online comic but that's more to fuel my lust for being able to draw. I love to draw and someday I hope to draw well.

Anyway, I found this book while stocking the anime shelves up at Waldenbooks. I opened it up and was instantly impressed with the quality of the artwork. I took a look at it and said "Someday I want to draw like this!" So I bought it. What I found after I bought the book was an original setting fired up by quite a compelling story.

Now what really appealed to me is this isn't an action comic like we associate comics with. Yes, there are a few scenes with fighting in them but in general it's a very politico book which is right up my alley. I'm a sucker for politics. Not our politics but I love to read books in which the characters are driven by politics. I hate black and white circumstances and politics are never as such. They're always grey and that's what appeals to me.

All and all I give then book 4 out of 5 stars. Fantastic artwork, intriguing story, likeable characters. I could've gotten a 5 except I think the rushed the beginning too much. I would've liked to have gotten a little more background on some of the main characters and their ties to the other characters.

4-0 out of 5 stars Worth a Read and not THAT cliched
This is the most hyped story of the entire CrossGen Universe.

I'll get the bad news out of the way first. At times, the pacing is a little slow, and the story is somewhat predictable. And there are other CrossGen titles that are a more enjoyable read than Meridian (Sojourn, Route 666, and Negation come to mind).

That being said, it's still a CrossGen book, and right now, very few companies are turning out such consistently great material. The artwork (which does have the feel of an animated Disney feature) is beautiful, and really brings the characters to life. And this story, like most all of the CrossGen stories, is character-driven, which is really what makes a story great. If you enjoy comics and you enjoy Disneyana, or if you just like plain old tales of Good Versus Evil, you will enjoy this series. The first volume is (obviously) a great jumping on point, so give it a read and see what you think.

And just to clarify the previous reviewer's point, there are definitely elements of this series that would remind one of the Disney movie Treasure Planet. However, we must keep in mind that this volume collects issues of a monthly comic that was realeased in 2000, well before Treasure Planet was released in theatres. So if anything, you could say Disney was "borrowing" from CrossGen in this case.

4-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful artwork, but still full of Disney-type cliches.
The art is just so amazing to look at, especially those floating fairy islands suspended over a mystic world and all those colorful glowing lights that flow from the strangest sources, but the characters...well. They have already appeared MILLIONS of times before, especially in Disney movies and fairy tales like an evil uncle with one bad eye and a young swashbuckling Prince Charming whose shirt is loose enough to show off well-toned pecs. And young Sephie herself is the perfect prototype of any stereotyped fairy princess despite the fact her father is called a "minister" instead of a "king" in this story: she's pubescent, she's blonde, she's nubile, she's naive, and she's full of such wide-eyed innocence and tomboyish stubbornness. Not to mention the fact she doesn't have a mother (how typical.) Yet she goes out to save the entire world and turn it into a perfect upotia nearly overnight with magical powers that she has inadvertantly received from a mysterious source. And what's more...the flying boats greatly reminds me of Disney's most recent movie, "The Treasure Planet". How original. But other than that, the story is pretty decent and the art still pleasing to the eye in spite of the heavy use of computer to produce bright but artificial-looking colors. ... Read more

Book Description

Some might think that the corporate scandals of 2002 could make it difficult to find anything funny about today's business world. But When Body Language Goes Bad proves it will take more than that to slow down the inventive wit of Scott Adams, who clearly is never at a loss for finding hysterical things to mock in corporate life. This marks the 21st collection of Adams' wildly popular comic strip, Dilbert, which is featured in more than 2,000 newspapers worldwide. This book updates loyal readers on the so-called careers of Dilbert, Alice, Wally, Asok the intern, and other regulars as they wallow through pointless projects, mismanaged company takeovers, futile team-building exercises, and other inane company initiatives like the "name the rest room" contest. In addition to the strips' familiar characters, this collection showcases Adams' masterful ability to create hilarious "guest stars." There's the network design engineer known as Psycho Hillbilly, who was going for the gentle biker look until he decided it was overdone. Then, there's M. T. Suit, who is merely an empty suit walking the office halls spewing corporatese, such as "promising to enhance core competencies by leveraging platforms." Adams says that about 80 percent of his initial ideas come from his 150 million-plus readers. Those worldwide readers are sure to celebrate the humor found in When Body Language Goes Bad, his latest satirical look at the modern workplace.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fighting the daily grind
Adams does it again. One wonders where he keeps finding all the ideas, and they are so right on. Dilbert plods his way through seemingly useless existence lost in cubic space while his dog and garbage man seem much wiser. Wally never does any work, and we learn of the "Wally period" where you wait to begin a project in case it is cancelled. Dogbert sells nuclear warheads to the Elbonians and pointy hair brings in a man-hating feminist to harass the troops. Catbert the evil HR director thinks up new ways to torment employees. Classic Dilbert at its best. Send a copy to your own pointy haired boss for any occasion.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Chance Read
Frankly speaking, Dilbert never been my fav Comic Strip and I usually preferred Archie, Betty, Jughead and Veronica next to the yester years Picture Mags 'Photo Romance' and 'Darling' which had cool pic stories. On net, I happened to subscribe Dilbert Dose a day comic strip in my Mail box and became a fan of Dilbert. Scott Adams books drew my attention and I 'Chance Read' this book "When Body Language Goes Bad" through a friend's collection. There's been a satirical humour with tip on iceberg you call - How to avoid work, outwit the boss and updating the readers on Dilbert's careers, projects, take over of companies that got mis-managed and team building excercises. For most of the employees, a Boss is the worst nightmare and there's this dump-loads of work piled up. The weasel ways comes in great handy tip to outwit the boss at critical hours and this book, even for a novice is good read and know the characters that play its roles. All a way into the workplace, the coworkers plots and the Boss's unscruplous ways. I've yet to read a lot of this stuff but this one's good for sure to begin with. A chance read yet a 'Good Read' and a 'Good Pick' too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Everything`s back in "snafu" order....
The last 2-3 Adam`s Dilbert collections were lackin on edge somewhat. Not that you can ever go wrong by acquring a Dilbert comic but Adams has accustomed his readers to a very high niveau of humor.
"When body language goes bad" is a tremendous return to top form for the Dilbert creator.
New and very welcome twists take place as Dilbert gets downsized, the Pointy Haired Boss becomes an engineer (even if it is for just a day), Wally takes Asok under his wings to teach him his "deepest secrets" on how to avoid work, Dilbert`s mother adopts an even more caustic attitude than wè had seen her up to now, and of course Alice is as usual the aggro force of the corporate corridors.
Wally keeps stealing the show as usual and the Head of Human resources (or "livestock") comes up with new and improved ways to torture the already overtortured souls of the employees.

On a downside, as has been the case with almost all of Adams`last albums Dogbert and especially Ratbert (possibly the 2nd cultest character of the series) seem to have taken second stage.`
This is bizzare on one hand but understandable on the other as most of the Dilbert characters have a strong fan base but it`s also a fact that Dogbert is one of the driving forces of the comic. As for Ratbert, yes, it can be a personal preference thingie.
It`s probably getting boring to say "a must buy" for each new Dilbert publication, but, as the faithful know, it`s an addiction.

5-0 out of 5 stars Up to his best
Okay so I love this sort of thing, but this is up to his best and will make perfect gifts for everyone I know with a bithday this year.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hysterically and ruthlessly funny cartoons
When Body Language Goes Bad is the twenty-first collection of Scott Adams' "Dilbert" daily comic strips. Hysterically and ruthlessly funny cartoons featuring overtaxed engineers, their clueless pointy-haired boss, incompetent co-workers, a dog with more power than most dictators, and an insidiously evil cat in charge of human resources fill the pages of this hilarious and sometimes regretfully timely collection. When the mean and unscrupulous boss says, "Ha ha! We're filing for chapter 11 because all of our so-called profits are fake. I'm laughing because I sold all of my stock on the same day I heard that our CFO did!", both the humor and the message come across clearly and sink in deeply. ... Read more

Adams does it again. One wonders where he keeps finding all the ideas, and they are so right on. Dilbert plods his way through seemingly useless existence lost in cubic space while his dog and garbage man seem much wiser. Wally never does any work, and Alice puts in long hours that she has no life. Of the two Wally is more productive because he didn't make any big mistakes that cost the company money. Catbert the evil HR director thinks up new ways to torment employees. Classic Dilbert at its best. Send a copy to your own pointy haired boss for any occasion.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not the best collection
For Dilbert fans, this is a must buy book. However, for those that are starting out on their Dilbert trek, I would recommend reading "Still Pumped from using the Mouse" or "I'm not Anti-business, I'm Anti-idiot" before purchasing this collection. Scott Adams did most of his damage in the late 90's and has not been able to pick up any momentum. Sometimes it feels like some of the newer Dilberts are just not as funny or even recycled. However, this book still has some great laughs and storylines. For the office slave worker, Dilbert will probably never cease to be funny. If you love Dilbert, you're going to buy this book anyway, and if you're just sort of interested, you should by some of the earlier ones.

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy it!
Another Day in Cubicle Paradise is a 120-page (excluding title page, introduction, etc.) collection of Scott Adams' hilarious Dilbert cartoons. Dated between 2/5/01 and 11/11/01, these cartoons include all of the normal Dilbert crew: Dilbert, Alice, Wally, Asok, Dogbert, Catbert (a personal favorite), and so forth. All of these are printed in black-and-white (even though the Sunday ones appear in color in your favorite newspaper), but this is made up for by the fact that there are so many laugh-out-loud funny ones!

This book is great, a must-have addition to the library of any Scott Adams fan. Buy it!

4-0 out of 5 stars cool one! may not be the best in the series
Good one, but why those marvelous episodes circulating in the e-mails are always in the 'other' books?

3-0 out of 5 stars The Spirit Archives Series
Will Eisner is the only comic book artist to ever have his work shown in a museum of art. His most important work is the Spirit. The Spirit Archives series has brought together all of his work, that was printed in a weekly newspaper insert. However, after the work found in volumes 1 and 2, Eisner was called to active duty and served in the army during World War II. The Spirit carried on, but it was drawn by other artists. Eisner's work does not pick up again until the stories found in Volume 12 of the Archives series. The work in Volumes 3-11 is fine, but it is not the work of Will Eisner.

5-0 out of 5 stars Where Eisner really begins to take off
What's so astonishing about these stories is how variegated and simulatneously superb they were week after week after week--it's astonishing to think of Eisner generating not only such sophisticated and variegated material (almost no single story reads like any other--he changes the tone again and again and again, from sentimental to suspenseful to humorous to scary), but that he did so on a weekly basis. This collection shows him already at top form, and collects some of the most famous of all the SPIRIT stories, including "The Oldest Man in the World" (justly celebrated by Maggie Thompson in ALL IN COLOR FOR A DIME) and "The Jewel of Death" (previously reprinted in Jules Feiffer's book on superhero comics).

Anyone interested in comics at all should buy these just to study Eisner's incredible storytelling technique: in just a few pages every week he could shorehorn in an amazing amount of material. His stories often show astonishing sophistication in narrative compression, and his use of sophiticated layouts and angles seems not just to be informed by film noir but actually to predate its greatest advances. Look, too, at how deftly he delineates character: the Spirit, Ellen, Commissioner Dolan, Satin, and Ebony (who is really the star of the strip at this point) are shown to have complex and multilayered personalities, far ahead of anything done before Eisner (or, some would even say, since).

4-0 out of 5 stars A series on the verge of exploding into brilliance
In the third volume of "Will Eisner's The Spirit Archive," the weekly Spirit stories from the "comic book section" newspaper supplements are almost at the point where they are truly masterpieces. In Vol. 4, we get to 1942 when all the elements finally congeal into the stories that still stand head and shoulders above most of the work being done in comics today, 60 years later. This volume is still not a 5-star effort, but it is an excellent read that is full of stories that holds up nicely six decades later

While Will Eisner's The Spirit has been reprinted multiple times over the decades, these DC volumes are the first time the series will be printed in proper order and in its entirety. It is fascinating to read these stories and watch as Eisner and his assistants find the format and styles that would make comic book history.

Although each 240-page volume sports a US$40 price tag, I think these are items that belong on the shelves of every aspiring comic book creator and any person who fancies themselves a serious fan of the artform. Will Eisner's 'Spirit' series is where much of what we consider the basics for good graphic story telling was first used. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The Continuing Adventures of Sephie
In this second installment of Crossgen's extremely affordable Travelers Editions, the multi-pronged narrative approach continues as Sephie tries out her new magical powers and recruits new allies on the diseased surface, her crooked uncle Ilahn sees new avenues of possible conquest, and her exiled people find a new floating island to call home. The plot sags somewhat in this volume, and the introduction and development of new characters Deren Beq and Crenner is given undeservedly short-shift, but it is still an enjoyable romp through a fantasy world with an empowering female heroine.

5-0 out of 5 stars The continuing adventures of Sephie!
This is an amazing continuation of the story of Sephie, the young hero of Meridian. Here Sephie begins to understand the nature of her new mystical powers, and to accept her role of leadership in a world threatened by tirany.

I highly recommend this for readers of all ages and tastes. ... Read more
