5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Collection
Of the 33 stories in this book, I don't think there was one that I didn't like for one reason or another. I'm generally not a big fan of superhero comics or of those that try too hard to be dark and edgy, and this is a nice alternative. I got a strong impression that the creators of the comics in this book just had fun and really put themselves into their work. The art styles are quite varied and impressive. Some of the stories are funny, some emotional, and some just inspiring artistically. The stories range from one page to around 20.

Although the book is large (and a great bargain at the Amazon price), it's a quick read. But this isn't a bad thing--I felt that I more than got my money's worth. I'll be looking for other work by some of these artists and ordering the first volume. I hope the Flight series continues.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Ground Breaking Anthology
Kazu Kibuishi (editor, director, artist, and writer) has assembled some of the most talented artists and writers for this collection of stories and poems. Not sure why Amazon is crediting Becky Cloonan with this masterpiece since she only wrote one story for this volume (other than her being alphabetically first). The quality of the stories and the art is equally as great as Volume 1. Plus this volume has a lot more pages. Get this from Amazon while you can. I got a first printing!

All of the stories are tied together with one common thread: Flight or Flying. My personal favorite story from this collection is "The Robot and the sparrow" by Jake Parker. Well written, well drawn, and even has some comic book stories you can read to the kids at night. =]

It is hard to describe just how awesome this book is. You will leave this book with a good feeling and a smile on your face.

5-0 out of 5 stars First class art work, a style for everyone.
I was intrigued by the cover in the book store so I decided to pick it up. Wow, was I ever impressed. I used to be into comic books and art in general while in high school, but never in my wildest dreams would I have envisioned what the medium would become. Yes, I am getting old and no, I haven't been keeping up with comics. So, there may be better out there but not with so many different styles: One in pastel, one comp. generated, another in oils, and even a more traditional pen and ink section (all executed exquisitely).

If you are interested in finding out what can be accomplished stylistically and artistically in the world of graphic novels look no further. I can't wait to find volume two.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pure, undiluted Millar
Longtime comic fan here, going way out on a limb:this is the best thing to hit comics since "Watchmen".There, I said it."Wanted" is also one of the most extreme, graphic, bloody, disgusting, nihilistic things I've ever read.As much as I recommend it, I also cannot stress highly enough:if you have ever been offended by *anything* in your *entire* life, do not read this book, 'cause it ain't for you.If you're of a strong, open mind and looking for something to knock your socks off, "Wanted" fills the bill nicely.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just plain awesome
From the twisted mind of Mark Millar (The Ultimates, Chosen, The Authority) comes Wanted: a six issue mini-series from Top Cow that is everything a comic should be.Wesley Gibson is down on his luck young man letting society run his life. He's stuck in a dead end job, lives with his cheating girlfriend, abused by his boss, and generally walked all over. Then one day his life changes forever.Wesley learns that he is the son of the Killer, the greatest super villain of all time, and that his father has died and he has inherited everything.Soon enough, Wesley is trained to be the sadistic killing machine that he was always meant to be, and no longer a slave to society. However, Wesley soon learns that there is trouble brewing in the super villain society, and as the secret of his father's death which involves various conspirators unravels, Wesley learns that maybe the last thing he ever wanted in his life was to be wanted.Drawing numerous comparisons to Fight Club, only more nihlistic (if such a thing is possible), Wanted manages to be one of the most insanely darkly humerous and blood curdingly violent comics since Vertigo's Preacher series, and the stunning art of J.G. Jones gives Wanted a cinematic look that is nothing short of incredible. This handsome hardcover TPB of the mini-series is a must have for comic fans who missed out on the single issues, and even though it may be hard to swallow at times (this is definitely not for the faint of heart), this is blockbuster comic storytelling at it's best. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars You'll love this book.
I borrowed this from a friend... now I HAVE to get my own copy. I can't wait for volume 2.

This book is that good people. Run... don't walk to get this little gem.

5-0 out of 5 stars the epic zombie movie we always wanted to see
i am a huge zombie fan and i love romeros work among others, and there was always the problem of not having the best actors possible and the budgets being next to nothing, but i had in my mind a epic zombie tale..this is it!

we have great writing that makes us grow to love the characters and feel for them, there are plenty of moments with just people being people, it's not all gore and zombies, that is why so many non horror fans love this.

but worry not horror/zombie fans, there is plenty of attacks, cities full of zombies living dead horror, no budget worries here, the artist can simply fill the page with as many as he wants, and the art is fantastic, very realistic with a ever so slight cartoony edge that never takes away from the impact of the story, and these are some of the best zombies i have ever seen.

it's all balanced out so well, it keeps you coming back for more, i hope they release more since the series is at issue 8 now and this collects the first 6.

4-0 out of 5 stars One of the best of the year.
This is an excellent graphic novel that collects issues 1-6 of the Walking Dead series. Robert Kirkman has written a great story here, and Tony Moore's excellent black and white artwork brings it all to life (or should I say, brings life to the dead?). The story unfolds like a well written movie. The characters are well defined and their struggles come across as very human. This is more of a survival story than it is a zombie story, but don't worry...there are plenty of nasty zombies to go around, too. In fact, this is one comic story that I would very much like to see put on the big screen...and I wouldn't change a thing. I enjoy horror comics, but this was different than most. This comic is very intelligent, realistic (for a zombie story) and has a good message about working together to overcome adversity (and what adversity it is here!). Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Walking Dead rule the earth...
Rick, a small town Kentucky police officer, awakens from a gun shot induced coma to find the world a very different, and very horrifying, place. The dead now walk and attack the far out numbered living. While he slept, the world had ended...

While the opening was a tad too close to 28 Days later for my taste (wouldn't it have been more interesting to start at minute zero and progress through the erupting zombie plague?) the story quickly grew on me and, in the absence of a fourth Romero zombie movie, it satisfies. Required reading for any zombie fan.

4-0 out of 5 stars Best Graphic Novel of 2004
Brilliant artist Tony Moore takes a superb script by Robert Kirkman to give us a fresh retelling of the "zombie world order" horror story. Inkwash over pen and ink works perfectly to convey a human tale of survival at the end of civilization. This book is a character study with examples of courage, cooperation and compassion balanced by equally well rendered paintings of human fear and envy. I usually walk by black and white comic books, but this one wouldn't have been as good in color. 2004 is not quite halfway over, but I doubt I'll read a work of fiction this year I'll enjoy more. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Simpler is better
It's been a long time since I read "Mage" and I bought this out of nostalgia. And yes, it gave me college flashbacks. Re-reading it, though, reminded me of its stunning strengths. That wouldn't be dialog - Wagner's dialog is occasionally stilted and awkward. But the simplicity of the art design reflects the simplicity of the story - both have hidden depths, and both are much richer than they might seem at first glance.

Every retelling of this story says something about the world that produces it. Wagner's world hasn't really aged. I look around and I see us as still alienated, still pathless, still worried about whether or not we should have as much conviction in pursuit of the right as our opposition has in the pursuit of what's evil.

It ain't perfect, but the characters have a modern individuality and archetypal resonance all at the same time, and that's tough to do. The characters and the world, they're really the jewels of "Mage", and well worth the investment in this beautiful conveniently collected volume. I'm glad I invested in it. I'm very much enjoying it all over again.

4-0 out of 5 stars My favorite comic book series ever, but...
First serialized in the mid-80s, Matt Wagner's Mage: The Hero Discovered remains my favorite comic book series of all time. However, I feel this edition does not do it justice. One of the most distinctive aspects of the original Mage series was the hand-painted color by Wagner. Here, the original painted colors have been replaced by digital colors by Jeromy Cox.Cox is a talented colorist, but without Wagner's colors the art in this series loses a lot of its personality. If you want to see what Wagner's coloring can look like, turn to the Mage II "Interlude" at the back of the book. This may be unavoidable since the original negatives could be lost, but in my opinion, it's worth seeking out older editions with the original colors like the Starblaze/Donning editions.

2-0 out of 5 stars Far Shallower than I Expected
The fight scenes were well choreographed, but there was very little depth to any other aspect of the book. The artwork by the last few issues presented was pretty good, but it was very weak to start with, and the characters are not developed at all.

In truth, I was highly disapointed with this book.I bought it because on the back Kevin Smith calls it one of the three best comic stories ever, and considering he owns a comic shop, has written comics himself, and overall seems pretty intelligent, I figured this book must be pretty darn good. Now I find myself really questioning Smith's judgement.Given time, I could probably come up with fifty collections better than this, and taken to a comic shop I could probably find ten or twenty monthly comics on the shelf better than any issue in this book.Today's books are far more sophisticated -- Mage, to me, read like it was written for a seven year old.

I'm sounding pretty harsh, and I don't mean to say Mage was bad, but I gotta say it's highly over rated, and wasn't very good. People talk about what a personal story it is, but by the end I couldn't tell you what the main character's job was, who any of his friends were, what his hobbies or any of his interests were, what he liked to do to pass the time, if he had a girlfriend or had ever had a girlfriend, where he was from, any single thing that had happened to him before the start of the first issue in fact, how he was raised, what he beleived, what he didn't believe, or why he believed or didn't believe those things.Kevin (the main character) is supposed to be a reluctant hero, but why? What makes him so reluctant? It's never articulated -- nor does his reluctance ever have any meaninfull affect on the story. And none of the other characters are fleshed out any better.None of the characters are fleshed out at all. They are all just stick figures.Thumb nail sketches.Card board cutouts I personally couldn't empathize with any more than I can empathize with the key board I'm typing on right now.And the villains? My word I did not find them intersting or menacing at all.Their motivations were exceedingly weak, thier actions and interactions very simple, and (much like the hero's) their skills surprisingly undefined.Again, much like the story felt like it was written for seven year olds, the characters felt like they were written for seven year olds.

If I'd read Mage when if first came out, I might have considered it alright, but not really good even for the time.Compared to stuff that comes out now, it's highly dated, and vastly overshadowed in every respect; writing, characterization, art, and coloring. To Mr. Smith I say the following are better: Watchmen, V for Vendetta, Saga of the Swampthing, Batman Year One, Batman the Dark Knight Returns, Daredevil Born Again, Jeff Smith's Bone, Superman Secret Identity, Ronin, Midnight Nation, Joss Whedon's Fray, the first couple Ultimate Spiderman collections, the Mark Verhieden Aliens collections (vol 1 and 2,) the Ultimates vol 1 and 2, The Punisher: Welcome Back Frank, Jon Sable by Mike Grell, JLA Virtue and Vice, Justice League a New Begining, Danger Girl the Ulitmate collection . . . I better stop.I said above I could probably pick 50 collections better, but now I imagine it's closer to a 100. I have many collections I only thought were decent that I would have to rank higher than Mage. And there's still more good ones I hadn't mentioned before, like both volumes of Ultimate Fantastic Four, Green Arrow the Longbow Hunters, Geof John's Teen Titans, Crisis on Infinate Earths, Smith's own Green Arrow Quiver, Supreme Power, most Brian Bendis work . . . Whoops I started again.Anyway, I have no idea what Smith was thinking when he called this one of the three best collections ever.

In short, I have a lot of friends who don't like comics, every once in a while I'll give them a good story to try to convince them to give comics a chance.I would never give them Mage.It lacks depth, tension, thrills, characters that feel real, a world that feels real, a tight plot, or powers that are ever really defined (which also plays into that tension thing -- it's hard to worry a character is overmatched when you have no idea what he's capable of doing.)

5-0 out of 5 stars Stunning
Mr. Wagner's epic tale of the Hero. An Archetype hero soul is reborn into an average man who cannot find anything to believe in.To tell to much is to spoil it.Suffice it to say I have read mine until they are dog eared. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Sci-fi meets Mythology meets Top Cow!
Michael Turner struck gold with his earlier work on Witchblade. I was nuts over his work on that former book. Beautiful women and ultra-detailed backgrounds. Then when he left that book, I was very upset for a long while....

That was until my Fathom Hardcover Deluxe Collected Edition arrived in the mail! His work here is better than ever. Even more fluid than his work in Witchblade - although I have to say that there are pieces in Witchblade that will remain very special to me.

Top Cow puts in the highest production quality into their comic-books. This book is the perfect example of holding a summer-blockbuster movie in your hands. The effect is really THAT mind-blowing. Bill O'Neil's writing is overly wordy at times and there are many hanging plotlines left at the end of this volume. But after the whole experience of reading this book, well, I don't think you'll care about all its faults. Ultimately, the book is about Aspen Matthew's search for her true identity - human or water-being, warrior or pacifist, princess or destroyer.

If you like the movie, "The Abyss", you'll love this book. Or if you've ever wondered about the mysteries of the deep, the Bermuda Triangle, or the existence of pre-human intelligence, you'll love this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nothing Else Compares
This is the best graphic novel/comic series period. I feel the creativity of Michael Turner is unmatched anywhere. If you only buy one graphic novel this year, this needs to be it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome new comic series!
This looks like the beginning of something fantastic! Something big.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good almost to the end
For some reason i remember this comic getting really knocked, but i'm looking again at the reviews (only 4?) and they're uniformly good. Huh, maybe my memory is slipping.

i'm not going to describe the book because it's the second half of the Power duo. Read the first, see the cliffhanger, read this story which starts 10 years later.

i thought i heard reviews claiming this book wasn't as good as the first one. i suppose that's true, although this is one really good book. i also remember reading that people thought this was kind of cliche comic book stuff, and it really isn't. It's still in the Moore/Miller adult theme where the characters have insecurities and make mistakes and all that. It's good stuff.

My one complaint is this - the book completely wimps out in the end. And by end i mean the very, very end. All this build up about complex politics and factions and ideas and conspiracies and in the very end we find out who the real villan is and it's... lame. Really lame. Standard comic book villan stuff. Nothing interesting or realistic or insightful or novel. That was a let down. But i'm still glad i spent the money to read this whole series

5-0 out of 5 stars Even More Fantasic
With J. Michael Stracynski you know you're going to get something good, and he doesn't let you down. The story is fantasic, and the artwork is really good. I don't read as many comics as I used to when I was younger, but after Babylon 5, I've been looking for other things JMS has done. This was amazing, highly recommended - story telling at it's best. I can hardly wait for the third (and apparently final) volume.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Stuff
Great characters and fantastic writing. My only little beef is that a new artist took over the last few chapters. While not as good as the original, still solid. I really enjoy consistency with artwork, which is a rarity for any comic these days...

5-0 out of 5 stars Reached all my high expectations
Rising Stars continues to be one of the better comic book series out there. This second act of the story continues to develop the specials and drop more hints on what's really going on. Also you'll start to get a better idea of how (and why) the story ends the way it does, as was seen in the very first issue of the first book.

When it comes to telling stories over a long period of time, JMS is easily one of the best. His planning and foresight is exceptional, and as the story unfolds you'll want to go back and reread the previous issues to see all the foreshadowing.

As I've come to expect, the story ranges from the most intimate character development, to intense action, to very broad dramatic themes. This really is a comic to look for.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another amazing story from JMS
On a whim one day, while browsing amazon.com, I decided to pick up both this and the first volume in the Rising Stars series. I had never heard of the series, but I've always been impressed by JMS's story-telling ability, so I thought they were worth a shot. It was one of the best decisions I ever made.

The story is one of the most imaginative re-workings of the superhero genre I've ever read. Engaging characters and superb artwork make this series a great read. I can't wait for the third (and final) act to be available in collected form. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Kirkman is great!
I first picked this series up for the artwork, but then became captivated by the story. I bought the trades to catch up on what I missed, wow I was missing one of the best stories in comics today. Kirkman does a wonderful job bringing the characters to life with twists and turns around every corner. Ottley's artwork fits it perfectly grade A stuff on both parts. This trade also comes with pages of neat extra sketches and writings.
This is well worth the money, if your not reading Invincible I would HIGHLY recommend picking it up, it's amazing! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Visual intensity
Sanity is not always called for. This story explores one alternative. It's a dark alternative, but it's an alternative to an even darker reality.

This is another of Mack's lavish painted comics. To call it 'painted', though, is faint praise. Drawing, lettering in a few different hands, collage, painting - the visual layering and intensity are incredible. The story itself is stark, physically static the with dynamics all in Kabuki's mind. Somehow, Mack conveys and sustains that moment when even desperation fails.

Mack's images are filled with deconstructed text. My eye instinctively tries to read it all, but that would defeat the purpose of the imagery. On the other hand, ignoring it defeats the purpose of the writing. This is a book I'll come back to, to give it all the different readings it deserves. ... Read more
