4-0 out of 5 stars the demon murdering fiery assasin from hell. cool
this is a very worth buying comic book. it has an exciting plot that includes emotion drama and lotsof brain pounding action plus you find out a little more why al simmons/ spawn
was assasinated and sent to hell. this book also has a very intresting twist with the famous magician harri houdini . and even if you arent familiar with the concept and story of spawn this comic is a pretty good place to start. i would recommend this spawn to any new or old fan.

5-0 out of 5 stars Why is it that everyone who hates Spawn can't spell?
It seems to me that people who talk about reading GOOD literature should be able to spell fairly well, right? Not the case.

4-0 out of 5 stars Hell born hero makes his way to his first biograhphy
Todd Mcfarlane created spawn after workin on marvel comics. He also gave them one of there best villians "Venom" from spider man. after leaving Marvel he gathered with some friends to create Image comics. Spawn quickly became known to the world after some help from money spending comic book junkies. This is a trade paper back or ghrapic novel if you will, the first one made containing spawn comic books. The story writing is great, the drawing is outstanding. It was all done by todd mcfarlane ( there was no help involved.

The book contains five issues of exelance:

first issue : "beginings"
sencond issue:"questions part 3"
third issue : "questions part 3"
fourth issue : "questions part 4"
fith issue : " justice "
The first four issues are the concepts of spawn getting to know himself and you. The fith issue is where he takes a uniuqe mission : to find billy kincaid. Billy Kincade is a child killer who broke from prision and rides around in an ice cream truck. Now who would think of all this.

1-0 out of 5 stars ex-fan
as some one else already mentioned Spawn ...I would just like to renforce this statment.i read spawn(unfortunately)up to issue 50 when the plot line involved cybernatic gorrila with the brain of a betrayed special agent. need I say more?Todd Mcfarlen's only motove is profit. He has even admitted this in interviews. In his own words "i want Spawn to be a house hold name" Wizard special. He stopped drawing to merely focus on making Spawn products.Toy line is horrorific. how many spawn figures do you need? gotta collect them all.go and spend your money some where else.Neal Gaiman's Sandman, Akira, Ghost in the Shell, and Cerebus all of these are landmarks in comic literature.Oh and as long were topic of reading pickup some other reading materail such as Fight Club, Ender's Game, and the Godfather(yes there is a book and its good. really good)

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, an interesting superhero.
Out of all the mainstream comics on the market today - superman, spiderman, batman, etc. - Spawn is certainly the best. The main thing contributing to this is the realism of Spawn, that he has a very dark human nature and he shows you that it's okay not to be perfect. The art also compliments the story.Detailed, Gothic, and with a dark style all it's own, each page is vibrantly alive. ... Book Description

Frank Miller, author of The Dark Knight Returns, Batman: Year One and Sin City, brings Batman to New York City in his search for an arsenal of high-tech weapons and robots that use decapitated human heads as their brains. Antagonistic, confrontational and suspicious of each other, Spawn and Batman engage in violent battles before realizing they are both after the same villain. Grudgingly, they decide to work together. The person they seek has been kidnapping and decapitating the homeless for use in the robots, but that’s only part of the plan: there is also a nuclear arsenal ready to be deployed. Will Spawn and Batman be able to foil the plan to destroy the world? It’s a story filled with many twists and turns and a surprise ending that affected Spawn for years afterward. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Can we combine this with Batman/Spawn: War Devil?
This story had all the hallmarks of a great Batman tale. The dialogue was fresh, gritty, and totally Batman--Frank Miller style. Plus, with McFarlane's art, how can you go wrong? When you try to include the plot. While the dialogue and interaction between Spawn and Batman make this a must-read for diehard fans, the plot is severely uninteresting. Ironically enough, in the other crossover, War Devil, the plot is the only good point in an art-poor, dialogue-poor story. So if we could just find a way to combine the two, we'd have a seriously good Batman story. Anyway, the comic's worth the money, just to see Batman go toe-to-toe with a demon from hell and hold his own. Not to mention all the great one-liners and Batman quotes. Oh yeah, and Mr. Arrogant's art isn't too bad, either.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Pair
finally these two dark saints team up. It's fun to watch people like Spawn beat up Batman. The illustrations were great and the story was ok. I think that the big problem with this is that the story sucked.

4-0 out of 5 stars READ THIS BOOK....PUNK
OK,the folks who dont like this book just dont get it.This is an in-continuity prequel to millers greatest work of all time THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS.Spawn and Bats team up to save the world, but the real joy is in seeing the conflict between Bats and Spawn.Spawn is a "hero" who uses the powers of hell to flay and kill people on a regular basis.Guess how Batman reacts?? Spawn is a punk and its about time he learned what it takes to be a man.....

1-0 out of 5 stars WHY?!!!!!
why in the hell would have a spawn and batmon crossover.
anyway spawn is one of my fav. and batmon is good.
two words SPAWN BATMAN

1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible. Terrible. Terrible.
I never thought it could get this bad. Two of my favorite comic book writers made my least favorite comic book. Go figure.

The story is awful, and even when Batman is saved by Spawn, even when Batman is laying on the ground losing blood rapidly, he still manages to call Spawn a twit and a punk, with no didcipline. Now that is determination. I counted, Batman says punk a total of 13 times. What is he, 8?

This comic book is terrible, I would not even reccomend buying it. If you really wanna read it, go to the store, sit down, and read. Then go flush it down a topilet or something, because this thing is crap.

Sorry Mcfarlane, Miller, you tried hard I know. I liked your other work though! :) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A first taste of Spawn books
I've never read a Spawn book before, but after reading Spawn 5 I'm going to read them all!

I enjoyed the level of depth that that the writers used and how they left me hanging at the end because the odd man-who-was-changed-into-a-demon is helped by Spawn.

I really like the level of artistry that the Spawn books have. Many of Marvel's books are black and white and I HATE THAT! We got rid of black and white tv LONG AGO and black and white comics before that, WHY would we go back to black and white comics? Sorry, yes I think you should buy Spawn 5, and I recommend it for it's level of character and story depth and high standard of artistry.

1-0 out of 5 stars Junk. Pure Junk.
I've bought a few Spawn-related stories in the past, when a favorite Writer was involved, such as Dave Sim, Alan Moore, Frank Miller, Neil Gaiman, etc. With the exception of Frank Miller's Spawn/Batman crossover, and Alan Moore's Violator and Violator/Badrock, they've all stunk. I blame this on the character of Spawn himself, which is truly limited by it's one-dimensionality. Not even the greatest Writers in the field of comics can make him interesting.

Angela's Hunt will be incomprehensible to people who haven't read Spawn #9, also written by Neil Gaiman. It should have been included in the book, as the story makes precious little sense without it. Gaiman, who created the amazing Sandman for DC, has finally done something I didn't love. (First time for everything, I suppose...) The book is only interesting as a historical footnote now, as it was the catalyst for the recently decided Todd McFarlane/Neil Gaiman Lawsuit over the ownership of Angela, Cogliostro, and Medieval Spawn. (Gaiman won, and was granted ownership of the characters, as well as a settlement and residuals from other uses of those characters, including their appearances in the Spawn movie & cartoons.)

Spawn fans ONLY should read this; Gaiman fans should steer clear. You're not missing anything.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Comic
I thought this comic was great. It has a great story to it and the drawings are exelent. I thought the person who did the color on it did a great job, too.
I usally don't read the Spawn comics, but I thought this one looked interesting so I bought it. I am very happy with it and can read it over and over again.
The cover interested me by its great artwork and detail. I recomend this to fans of Spawn's Angela.

4-0 out of 5 stars A welcome extra to the earlier Spawn issues
After writing mostly Fantasy-influenced stories with throlls, faeries and wizards which worked out good for him, Neil Gaiman takes a risk here with the further creation of a character who later turns out to be one of the most popular members of the cast of a superhero title according to many. I myself take quite some characters over her (Billy Kincaid, Violator, Jason Wynn) but as a character that's supposed to be the perfect opposite of the Hellspawn she's indeed a very satisfying new (at the time) character. Luckily most of the story stages in Heaven and Hell, places Gaiman is familiair with since he explored them many times over already and THAT shows. His writing is being aided by the art of Greg Capullo who I think started here in showing himself to be worthy to take up drawing Spawn after McFarlane. It's obviously NOT the perfected art Capullo shows of later when he gets to draw 'Spawn' yet though, to be honest. I don't have a specific word for it but it's showing that typical "Image-look' that most Image books had in their early days.

About the story: The Angelic warrior Angela is celebrating her 100.000th birthday in her own unique fashion when all of a sudden the Hordes of Heaven come to place her under arrest. She's being put on trial for treason and conspiring with a Hellspawn (See the events in Spawn #9 to see what happened), among other things. It soon becomes clear to most that she's being set up and her friends attempt to help her. In doing so they need to get Spawn from earth and take him to heaven un-noticed to testify for Angela, the woman who once tried to kill him.

This story takes place right after #10 and is really a very good enhancement to the early days of the ongoing Spawn series. In saying that I'm also saying that it's definately NOT for people who haven't been reading the first 10 issues of Spawn, or at least #9 and 10 where the first Spawn/Angela meeting takes place. It explains a lot about some changes Angela went through between #9 and the later issues, which aren't addressed in the Spawn series itself. So when you've been a Spawn reader you must surely get this because it will only make your experience and understanding of Angela better, because it ties up some loose ends. If you haven't you should think about getting Spawn #9 and 10 first (#9,10 + the Angela minies makes a perfectly good stand-alone story without you having to go further into Spawn afterwards), or not get Angela at all. The story won't make sense otherwise.

5-0 out of 5 stars Angela's the best!
This trade paperback is awesome. It has a great mix of kooky humor, tons of action, and it's written by Neil Gaiman, one of the best writers around. This book ties very closely with what's going on in Spawn,so it's kinda hard for people who never had read Spawn to get.Angela is an angel who's job it is to hunt various beings of evil, mostly hellspawns(people who have made deals with the devil to come back to life),and she is the best. Before this mini-series,Angela has only made one appearance in Spawn,(#9)where she fought Spawn and lost(first time she was ever beaten by a hellspawn),and,in an attept to flee after getting beaten by Spawn, leaves her main weapon,a huge Lance. The mini-series continues shortly after that, where Angela is being framed by an evil angel named Gabrelle who wants to prove to all of heaven that Angela gave the lance to Spawn and is a traitor to heaven.Spawn himsefl guest stars in the book, when he is convinced by two other angels who are Angela's friends to be a witness at Angela's trail. This is a great book, anybody who's reading this should get it.It's not really as serious as it sounds,it's very funny,I recommened it to anybody that likes a good fun read. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK!
Spawn Urban Jungle. This is, in other words, Book nine from the Spawn's Book series. It has some of the greatest histories in the Spawn original saga (Issues 39 to 42). The first history is one of the sweetest ones ever, it describes a little boy's view of Christmas, makes you remember when you where a little boy and the "grown-ups" problems where of no concern to you. While Spawn is fighting some thieves on the little boy's roof, he thinks that all of the noises are just Santa and some of Santa's helpers. The end of this Christmas story called "Noel" is just a big surprise. The next three issues of this book start with a great history the first time that Spawn gets almost killed. He gets caught by some of The Curse's helpers, and the he's taken to a castle somewhere else. The Curse starts cutting Spawn's flesh into pieces just to send them to earth's greatest minds and... well, you have to read it to see what happens. The greatest part of these issues is how Spawn manages to escape from The Curse's hands, and how he terminates with The Curse's life. On the meantime, there are two background histories going on. When Cy-Gor starts looking for his prey (Spawn) and heads to New York, leaving a bloody path, also seeing Cy-Gor's human side as he saves a little boy from being killed. You can also see the two great detectives (Sam and Twich) as they look for some more clues and connections between Al Simmons (Spawn), Chief Banks, Senator Jennings' daughter and Billy Kincaid. You can also check out Twich's Beautiful Wife. And the conclusion of the great Three-issues-saga is when Spawn meets a funny little nerd that wants to be a hero when he grows up, and (with his great knowledge of comic books) he starts telling Spawn some things he doesn't know about his costume's design. One of the greatest things this book has is the Cover Art! Is Just REALLY Cool! As you can see, this book has it all. A must have for REAL Spawn fans. It starts with some sweet stuff, then it gets really violent, and ends on a big friendship between a Hell Spawn and a Nerd. I really recommend this great Book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Enter The Spawn
When it was first published, Spawn was a very much needed kick in the butt to the whole superheroes comic book genre (which might be the only genre in the States...!). The Spawn it's a human being, not an aerobics teacher wearing tighs, like your typical DC-Marvel formula hero profile. It is somebod who feels, who loves sometimes and hates most of the time.

Don't get the wrong idea, the Spawn is not an antihero yet. We might need to wait some other 50 years for a real antihero coming out in the United States comics, but it's a step further (no brainer: villain and anti-hero are totally different things)...

5-0 out of 5 stars Spawn #1
This is one of the fine artr work of Todd Mcarlene when he was fresh from the MArvel Comics before he head out to Image. The Chracter spawn in this comics is a lost soul who is a member of a secret service agent who needs to be silence after a specific duty. Spawn return to earth in search for the memory he have bargain with the devil whom he can't remember what is the bargain about. Overall the artwork in the comics is Great when it was launch back in 92 and to compare the art at that time and now is two different things. The comics back then have not much of a computer aided effect so all the art are originally drawn and then printed art. For a great fan of Spawn it would be great to keep the original first printing of this issue. ... Read more
