4-0 out of 5 stars Everything you ever wanted to know about Superman, and more.
This book is extremely informative for anyone interested in the history of Superman. Dennis Dooley has done extensive research into the background of the two creators, who were born and raised in a Cleveland suburb. Along with the in depth story behind the legend, Dooley also has included various essays by professionals in all walks of life. Some are very introspective, where as others are just fun (though answered seriously) ie what sign is Superman. All in all it makes for an informative and enjoyable read as we learn there is more to the legend of Superman than just some red and blue tights. He it truly a part of our American, and worldwide culture, and should be recopgnized as such. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Yawn.
Pretty uninteresting stories with the Man of Steel and the Dark Knight living different lives in alternate histories. Nothing new about them, but it does see how comic book writers have run out of creative stories to do with these two heroes.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good read
I liked the Batman story. It was kind of laid out like a movie. The Superman story was a little weak.

4-0 out of 5 stars Mostly Riveting Alternate Realitys
I thouroughly enjoyed this collection of new takes on the dc comics mythologies. The piratwe \\ Joker was the best!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars DC's Elseworlds are the best
I've always been a fan of Alternate History. With DC's Elseworlds, you take a history that was fiction to begin with, and move it into another alternate possibility. The stories that result have been some of the most interesting and imaginative comics around. This book has a bunch of those stories, collected from the 1994 DC Elseworld Annuals. It's well worth the cost, and serves as a great introduction to the "what if?"s of the DC superhero universe. ... Read more

Book Description

On February 12, 1940, The Adventures of Superman hit the airwaves in a new syndicated radio series. An instant hit, the program ran thoughout the 1940s, with Bud Collyer playing Superman. The show introduced many of the characters and concepts that later became fixtures in DC's comic book stories, including Superman's first encounter with the deadly kryptonite and his adventures teaming up with fellow DC characters Batman and Robin.

Released first on CD and audiocassette in special boxed sets by Radio Spirits, in association with the Smithsonian Institution Press, the radio scripts of these shows are now being published for the first time in book form. The first volume of this series contains the classic 1945 "Superman vs. The Atom Man," which pitted the Man of Steel against his deadliest foe, a radioactive Nazi agent within whose veins flowed deadly kryptonite. Volume One also includes 16 sidebars focusing on such topics as Superman's comic book history as it relates to the radio scripts, the actors who performed in the series, the significance of the introduction of kryptonite, and the sociological context of the work given its airing during World War II. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for Superman collectors or fans of old radio dramas
Superman Radio Scripts presents original radio scripts from the 1940s radio series Adventures Of Superman, gathering scripts never before available and pairing them with sixteen pieces of classic cartoon art. It's the scripts themselves which are the highlight here: perfect for Superman collectors or fans of old radio dramas.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Work of Yesteryear
I have been a fan of Superman for many years, but I have always
particularly enjoyed the Golden Age. This book has the radio script from Superman's best radio play to my knowledge entitled "Superman VS Atom Man". Since I also own the radio show on tape, I can read along as I enjoy the story. There are also some wonderful old pictures that accompany the story. All I can say is that I would enjoy seeing more of these radio scripts in print. The book says "volume 1", so I hope that means more volumes may be coming out. If you want a script of this wonderful radio story, you won't be disappointed. And, overall, the price is right! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars What A Backward Planet This Must Be
Those responsible for writing the Superman comics in the 90's, loved to create these multi-part stories, that played out through all of the Man Of Steel's books. Some, like Death of Superman, worked very well. While, The Trial Of Superman, all but falls flat. The five part Bizarro's World, comes in somewhere on the lower end of those two examples mentioned.

THE STORY: Superman's long time adversary, Lex Luthor, used his great wealth and had himself cloned, in the event of his death. Now his clone, known as Lex Luthor II, is himself dying from a degenerative disease. In an effort to save himself, the clone decides to recreate Bizarro, a backwards version of our hero, who has an immunity to the ailment, thus Luthor II can be saved. Problems arise when Bizarro decides to turn our world upside down, into his own "unique vision" The real Superman must step in, to set things right, before it's too late. As much as I have always enjoyed the humor/novelety of the Bizarro concept, it works best in small doses, not spread out over 5 parts--a two parter max--that's it. I got bored halfway through with this story and had to struggle to reach the end. Bizarro gets old fast.

THE ART: The book's art is mixed. Some good Some bad. But that's to be expected when you have mutiple artists working on one story. The team of Penciller Jackson Guice and Inker Denis Rodier rises to the top with their crisp style.

The 126 page book features a gallery of the single issue covers from the original news stand version and an introduction written by the editor of this graphic novel, Bob Kahan. I would skip this one though and read some other Superman stories instead.

2-0 out of 5 stars Nice to read, but not what I and other readers would expect
The plot: Lex Luthor II is dying because of some clone deseases, and he desides to create another superman clone and put his mind on it. The clone obviously ends up a bizarro, escapes luthor and things happen. He tries to re-create his world (in an abandoned warehouse, not like in the 38's Superman), with Lois in it.

The story is nice to read, but it's most definitely not what I would have expected when I saw the title. The excuse to re-create Bizarro was stupid. Bizarro's World wasn't another misformed planet, but some sort of old warehouse. Plus, it's a 5-issues story when it could have been a lot less, they just made it bigger to sell more.

Anyway, it's not boring. I would just read something better, like "Erradication!". ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars dudes!
pretty cool book. Here we have the revenge squad, composed of Maxima, Barrage, Riot, Anomaly and Misa. Maxima is ticked that Supes keeps rejecting her. Morgan Edge, {Or someone, we don't see.} decides to form a revenge squad to get back at Superman. Problem is, {For them.} they can't work together and that is thier downfall. Clark has been under stress ever since he took over for Perry at the planet, but having lois as his wife cheers him up. overall, a pretty good story.

Heros: Superman, Lois Lane, maggie sawyer, turpin, lori lemaris, guardian, jimmy, captian Atom, Amazing Man. {Both have a cameo in maxima's flashbacks.} Villans: Lex luthor, Amthor, {Cameo}revenge squad, brainiac, Doomsday. {Both also have a cameo in maxima's flashbacks.

P.S. you may have to read "Superman: the wedding and beyond" to understand this better.

4-0 out of 5 stars superman at his best
action (yes) excitement (maybe) , art (most excellent) , but no real denger against superman which make it less then Appealing then a real comic book should be , though the plot is good ,in fact very good would be in order , for seeing how superman fought the each one of enemies separatly then how strong they became united , I found the end it self less then expected with less superman profile then usual , though at least the characters them self make the comic book more then worthy for buying. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars a fun crossover book
This is actually a paperback book that is a reprint of marvel treasury #28 but it does well in this size format because most panels are large and fill up entire pages. The book is 160 pages long. When Doctor Doom and the Parasite join forces Superman and Spiderman must team up. Because Peter is a photographer and Clark is a journalist they sort of switch places for this crossover. To give you a taste of how dated this book/trade is, when Peter (Spiderman's alter ego for the comic book impaired out there) meets Lana Lang his thoughts read, "Holy Toledo! She's gorgeous! Suddenly my fillings ache!" Statements like that make for some good laughs. By Jim Shooter, John Buscema and Joe Sinnot -- watch for an early appearance by none other than everyone's favorite: The Hulk. ... Read more
