5-0 out of 5 stars "Earth Stealers"-the REAL SUPERMAN!
I actually bought this when it was first released in 1988. It's just as good now, obviously, since it has been re-printed, and is still available. This is real Superman! No "Fabio" hair, no watered down powers. Clark Kent is, well, Clark Kent, not a "hip, slick and cool" yuppie. This is the Superman that flies through space and does amazing things, not the one who gets killed off by "Johnny-come-lately" no-brainer two bit villians. If you like the Superman, and don't think that improving him means changing his costume, identitiy, and powers rather than improving the stories (such as the way Frank Miller did with Batman), you'll likely enjoy this book. Excellent pre-"Doomsday" Superman! If you haven't bought it already, go ahead, you deserve it! I give it five stars(because six aren't a choice)!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A great Superman story with a pre-Crisis feel.
I enjoyed this story because it really showed off Superman's power.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great Superman story in an outer space setting.
This is a very entertaining story because Superman is challenged to find a way to free the planet Earth from captivity by extraterrestrial aliens. Superman's power is pushed to the limit, but this gives the reader a truly exciting look at what our hero can do if necessary. If you are a Superman fan or enjoy a good science fiction story with a super hero in it, than this book is a must read for you. It's definitely 5-star reading material. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is amazing!
For people following Superman through out his numerous journeys and battles, this book is a must read. The detail and points made in the novel are precise and amazing. This book goes into situations Superman encountered many years ago but still explains them with 100% accuracy. The author(s) took a lot of time to research and write this book, and after reading it the time speant was worth it. If you love Superman, you'll love this novel! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Super Team Up
When the folks behind Batman and Superman Animated Series decided to put the two heroes together for new weekly adventures, the end result, was yet another winner. The program had that now famous Paul Dini and Alan Burnett look and feel, present in the other shows that came before it. To comemorate the start of The Batman Superman Adventures, the series pilot episode was adapted for the comic book format.

Based on a story by Dini and Burnett, the adaptation benefits from the fact that Dini himself wrote the 64 page book. It is a fun read that follows the action of the episode quite well. Leaving out very little of the overall story. The adventure sets up the first time these two titans meet, as well as their alter egos. It's interesting to see Bruce Wayne seeking a relationship with Lois Lane and how Clark Kent reacts to it. The heroes don't really like the way the other operates when catching the bad guys either. They must find a way to work together when their arch enemies, The Joker and Lex Luthor hatch a devious plan against them--throw Harley Quinn into the mix and you've got trouble indeed.

The artwork from Joe Staton and Terry Beatty tries, somewhat successfully, to match the unique animation style of the show. While overall this works for the book, certain sequences, come across as too outrageous even for the comic book format.

That aside, the book makes a fine companion to the first episode, of a very solid series. Like the current incararnation of the Justice Leauge on cables' Cartoon Network is as much for adults as kids

4-0 out of 5 stars Fun
Worthwhile use of the "World's Finest" title for this first animated meeting between the Bat and the Big Blue Cheese. (For many years, "World's FInest"'s lead story every month was a Batman/Superman team-up, in an era when hero's team-ups were not common)

Excellent adaptation of the original; however, not a slavish one -- plays the rivalry between Batman/Bruce and Superman/Clark for Lois Lane's affections a little more broadly (the visual differences between the animated and the comic versions of the scene in which Clark calls at Lois's apartment and Bruce is already there are Significant).

Harley Quinn's running feud with Luthor's bodyguard/chauffeur, Mercy, is one of the high points.

While it doesn't bring much new, it's a good counterpoint to the film it adapts in giving alternate, slightly more "adult" views on some things -- if you have one, you really need the other. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars I give this book a guarded recommendation
With Y2K rolling around, some people are afraid that the world is about to end. But, Lex Luthor is not afraid; his corporation has set up a security service that will keep everything flowing smoothly. When the New Year arrives, and the lights go out, Lex begins to look for the culprit. The culprit is Brainiac 2.5, but there are schemes within schemes, and soon Brainiac 2.5 finds himself supplanted by Brainiac 13 - a future model who figures that Superman can only be beaten in the past, at the beginning of 2000. Perhaps he's right...

I am rather at a loss when talking about this graphic novel. The story is great, with the cast of characters changing repeatedly. The JLA appears at the beginning, and quickly disappears, while the Metal Men (old favorites of mine) become integral players. The biggest weakness of the book is the fact that each of the sections was illustrated by a different set of artists, which means that the whole appearance of the story changes, giving the story a strangely dislocated feeling. Anyone reading the graphic novel had better understand this ahead of time, or he or she will become quickly confused.

But, that said, I did find this to be a wonderful book. The graphics were generally good (though the changing of them throughout the story is a definite negative), and the story is great. I loved the book, while my ten-year-old son did not like it enough to even finish it (because of the graphics). So, I give this book a guarded recommendation.

4-0 out of 5 stars Brainiac attacks
I personally thoroughly enjoyed this storyline, and the various artists. This is a different brand of storytelling from the Roger Stern/ Doomsday days. While I appreciate both of these modern interpretations, this story and No Limits! herald a new direction for the Superbooks that even hardened comics fans might enjoy. Under Eddie Berganza's editorship, the Super-books are using the framework of the early 90's era of Superman's redefinition and bringing in both new and classic elements to the Superman mythos. I'm a longtime comics fan, but a new Superman fan, and this is the story that pulled me in and allowed me to go back and enjoy the older stuff (all the way back to 1938). Great work, if occasionally uneven, as one tries to read four different titles by multiple writers and artists all strung together. Give this story a shot if you're a JLA fan.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great new start for Superman in Y2K!
This graphic novel begins on December 31st 1999 and takes place in great city of Metropolis. Brainiac 2.5 has crashed on Earth and is feeding himself off the energy in Metropolis. He takes all the power from Metropolis at the stroke of midnight and all this power upgrades him and he becomes Brainiac 13. So, basically, Superman has to stop Brainiac from taking all the power of the Planet.

This comic book features the metal men and many members of the JLA. It is exciting and difficult to put down.

There are a few things I found annoying about this though. As this was originally a group of different comics by different artists and writers, each time a new chapter starts, the characters look different. The worst is Ed McGuinness as I think he makes Superman too muscly and cartoon like. Another thing that I didn't like was the look of Brainiac 13. The artists used computers to make him look 3D. This doesn't work. The computer pictures look too fake and don't fit with the rest of the comic. But this doesn't mean it isn't a great book, with a great story. Superman will definitely be with us forever! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Transfigurations
Shortly after writer/penciler John Byrne finished revamping Superman in the late 80's, new teams took over the chores on the titles featuring The Man Of Steel. An effort was made to have larger story arcs throughout those books. One of the first multipart adventures, featured the "birth" of the Eradicator.

Superman begins to act different. He slowly transforms from our planet's greatest protector, to an unrelenting force of Kryptonian justice, called the Eradicator. As the "former" Superman battes the likes of Lobo, Maxima, and Draaga, he moves further away from his earthly influences. Superman: Eradication collects the 7 part story that was originally published in single issue form. The story actually ponders some very good questions about our hero's origins and how they could overtake him, having been raised on our world. The tale also looks at Krypton's system of laws-beyond just The Phantom Zone. The Writers, Dan Jurgens, Jerry Ordway, and Roger Stern put together an entertaining, action packed, fun story (as all comic books stories should be). The story is just the right length and makes for a breezy read. Given my dislike for some of stories crafted after The Death Of Superman, this is a real gem, from the canon.

The art features the likes of Jugens, Ordway ,the awesome George Perez, Brett Breeding, among others. While everyone's art, inks, and colors are solid, the work of George Perez is sure to catch your eye the most, as it did mine.

Co-writer Roger Stern, provides a few words before the story begins, and after its conclusion as well. The book has 160 pages and comes recommended

2-0 out of 5 stars good but with no heart
The story about the end of Krypton and how its people mange to wipe almost all there existence , and how this device manage to change superman to become a true Kryptonion, with no feelings or desire effecting kent image in the process & with that almost loosing his life when facing a new equal in strength enemy. Interesting indeed , but with all the talk & non feelings envolve make it worth 2 stars in my book

4-0 out of 5 stars super story
This comic story reflects on an stoic population who doesn't believe in passion. All Kryptonians have is a sterile world, emotionless society and a culture based on logic.

It reminds me of stoic Vulcans in Star Trek.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Part of a dead krypton
I decided to purchace this Book, When I started my comic colection around the Death of Super Man because I wanted to find out what the Eradicator was in more deapth. This book answered my questions about this part of superman that I feel should be more a part of the story line of Superman.

4-0 out of 5 stars the man beyond tomorrow.
{major spoilers} superman goes though a cool change he is now a being of energy.
what makes me mad is that superman can only control his powers at the end of the book. if you want to know about how he changed back read "the complet history", they sould make a book of how he changed back and call it "Superman: back to the past" or something like that.

superman's new powers are:
1. he can shoot energy.
2. he is faster than the speed of light.
3. he absorb electricity and radiation.
4. he can pass though solid matter.
5. he can blow fuses.
6. he can magnetize stuff.
7. if he puts his hand in a computer he can absorb information.

heros: superman, lois lane, guardian, big barda, mister miracle, metron, spark, brainiac 5, cosmic boy, inferno, ultra boy, gates, saturn girl, jimmy olsen, cat grant, perry white, takion, lori lemaris, dirk armstrong, professor hamilton, the kents, maggie sawyer, turpin, bibbo.

villans: lex luthor, erica, the atomic skull, misa, riot, anomaly {mentioned}, sun-eater {mentioned}.

P.s. this story takes place some time during superman revenge squad.

5-0 out of 5 stars Really great book!
I stopped collecting Superman comics for a few years and when a friend brought me up to date, I realized that I'd missed quite a lot. I was most curious about Superman's transformation. So, he recommended that I buy this book. I really liked the entire story. It was great. The new Superman actually had more offensive power instead of defensive. I was very pleased with this book. However, there were three drawbacks. 1) It was a little confusing, so I had to read it twice. 2) It skips 3 months in between the two parts of the book, so there are a few references in the second half of the book, which I didn't understood and 3) after buying some of the original comics which made up this TPB, I realized that they skipped some pages which didn't contribute to the Transformation storyline. But, it was a really great read, overall and I highly recommend it to any Superman fan, active or once was active.

1-0 out of 5 stars The Worst Post-Death Superman Storyline!
This was really the final nail in the coffin of pure shock value stories the Superman creative team were dispensing to the public in the mid '90's. So it came as no surprise to anyone when they were all released from DC Comics in 1999 to make way for the biggest overhaul the Superman comics had seen since John Bryne's original run in the mid 80's.

The biggest problem with this story is that it was done purely for attention grabbing purposes without offering any substance to the readers. After the "Death of Superman" saga (which was actually pretty good), the creative teams gave us the overblown "Death of Clark kent" storyline, the preposterous "Trial of Superman" storyarc, then the rushed marriage to Lois Lane to coincide with the marriage in the "Lois & Clark" TV show, and finally this colossal bombshell. Basically, Superman is turned into a big blue Smurf comprised of pure energy. It's a testament to the enduring legacy of the Superman character that he was able to withstand all these mind-numbing stunts!

Whether you're a Superman fan or casual reader, I advise you to avoid this trade paperback at all costs! There are just too many other great reads to waste any time and money on this shameful chapter in Superman's life.

1-0 out of 5 stars A definite low point in the Superman saga
This was deadend story by a creative team that had run out of ideas after the "Death of Superman Story". The costume is ugly and the premise is weak. All they really accomplish is make Superman whine alot about not understanding his new powers. And don't expect any explanation about how the "transformation" occurred. I doubt that Jurgens and the rest of the creative team ever figure that one out themselves.

4-0 out of 5 stars Transformation
The biggest problem in dealing with an iconic character created more than 60 years ago is that youhave to deal with fans from all different ends of the spectrum. We're talking about a charcater that could have been read by Elvis, The Beatles and in these sad times the Backstreet Boys. A character read by or known in all parts of the world, China, France or even Trinidad and Tobago. We're talking about a legend that has endured all these 60+ years. How can you keep the character fresh to endure all the possibilities, but still retain that charm that made the charcater who he is. earlier in the 90s, they tried killing him and that proved shocking to the world at large, but still added extra depth to the character. Now they're trying something different. During the Final Night, the Sun was being slowly consumed by an entity and through that, our solar powered hero gradually lost his powers. When that is said and done, the sun is rejuvenated once again, yet our hero still remains powerless. Now that grabs you. This is the single theme that can make you read further as to understand what will happen next. You don't have to read the Final Night to get the picture. I haven't read it, and though I'm intrigued as to how Superman felt with his powers ebbing, I can survive with the notion that whith all this, he has become your regular Joe Public and move on with the story.

The story twist, giving and taking certain themes as it moves along. There are some pothole and some unanswered questions, but this is a tradepaperback collecting issues of the comics, not a complete self contained graphic novel. The book merely points to the transformation, but ends right there. There is no continuacy as to how Superman deals with things now that he has transformed. So you could say, the book is kind of incomplete, but again when doing a TPB, you just can't fill things as easy than when you're dealing with a graphic novel. All in all, this book has solid art and storytelling. The editorial tasks are a bit lacking from time to time as the reader might ask questions like "What? When did that happen?" or "This can't be right, I just read something different ten pages back."

Ironically, the transformation was not well received as the death of Superman. In the end Superman states that he has changed for the new century with different powers and aspects unknown, but the readers thought otherwise as the classic red and blue costume with the cape is brought back for the start of the millenium. I guess you can test people's threshold for change, but in the end, the best things in life are the classics. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best of the 2003 Superman Calendars
Out of the 2 Superman-only calendars available for 2003, this is definitely the one to get! It features what is still the best incarnation of Superman of them all, in terms of the artwork: the 1970s and early 1980s Curt Swan influenced Superman.

It is rare to find any calendars or any products with this particular version of Superman, since most of them carry the 1930s/1940s version of Superman (like the other 2003 Superman calendar, which I have seen and find quite drab), or the current version of Superman (as he appears in "Justice League"), which is a throwback to that Superman.

This beautiful calendar contains scenes of the Pre-Crisis Kal-El at his very best, and with the settings and characters that made this Superman the most special of them all. What I like about this calendar is that even though other characters make an appearance, Superman is dominant in the frame. This is his calendar, after all!!

The best part: the 1980s, Pre-Crisis Supergirl, with the attractive headband, makes an appearance.

The colours in this calendar are brilliant, and the calendar's design is aesthetically pleasing. From near or far, it will brighten up any office or room. Slow Dazzle has done a fabulous job! From someone who has seen all the Superman calendars for this year, buy your favorite Superman fan this calendar. Not the others.

If you hate the Picasso like artwork of "Justice League" and the current Superman comics, pick this calendar up.....and let's hope DC brings back the artwork of this Superman in its comics and shows....the REAL Superman! ... Read more
