To say that the Master Handbook of Acoustics is an 'incredibly comprehensive work' it's like saying that the Beatles were 'some band from Liverpool'. Without a doubt, a must-have. Better than that, buy two and enlighten a friend! :-)

Now really, this is the absolute definitive book on acoustics, covering topics ranging from sound propagation to room acoustics to absortion, diffusion, refraction, reflection, diffraction and everything else you can think of.

If you believe that the world of acoustics only consists of rooms and concert halls, this is the introductory book for you.

Otherwise, the treatment of contemporary topics is piecemeal. The introductory material is not sufficient to inform the more recent elements (the chapter on digital sound is laughable).

It is well worth the money for room acoustics. It should indicate that specific focus in the title. No where will you find psychoacoustics, instrument acoustics, microphone issues, and true recording issues.

I like this book: it's mainly about acoustic principles and room acoustics. It's easy to read (even for a beginner) and is not too superficial. One of the few audio books I still return to every now and then.

Very good in relation to room acoustics, but almost useless out of America. The book does not acknowledge the metric system, and the chapters about construction apply to materials and construction methods used only in America.

Otherwise, a really good book at hammering the basics in your head! If only there were metric versions of the equations...

This is an outstanding book for anyone interested in room acoustics. My motivation as an Audiophile for purchasing this book was to answer the basic question: "Should my next audio investment be in room acoustic treatments, and if so what are the considerations involved?" This book methodically breaks down every aspect of the behavior of sound, and how that behavior affects and is percieved by the listener. I work as acoustic consultant, primarily with noise and vibration simulation.

I recommend the book as it has helped me out on a few occasions where I needed to look into new things with which I had not previously worked. It is also useful when there is a need to reference matters you are familiar with, but want the detailed equations or the background assumptions restated.

Having to solve practical problems, I especially appreciate that the author includes references to other work and, more importantly lists 'rules of thumbs' that lead to sensible designs. Such recommendations have saved valuable time and money for me.

So, the scope of the book goes beyond that of teaching. It is quite a useful book also for practical work.

There are many myths regarding sonar, in both civilian and military applications. The perhaps best known ones are provided by Tom Clancy in his book/movie "The Hunt for Red October". While sonarman Jones and his $40 million computer make great additions to that story, they have little to do with reality.

This book, on the other hand, has everything to do with reality. It describes the working principles of sonar in as simple terms as possible. The explanations and mathematics are kept on a level where any electrical engineer can follow it, and the material is still general enough so that even renowned researchers on underwater acoustics can learn from it.

To me, one of the greatest assets with this book is that it so clearly shows

- what real-life sonars do
- how they do it
- why they do it like that
- what problems are encountered

This is information that is hard to come by elsewhere, and give rise to all sorts of speculations when lacking. The book is as relevant to navy sonars as civilian ones. ... Read more

I picked up this book for an introduction for Sonar/Radar. My background knowledge of DSP helped me understand the material, but there is a brief intro for basic signal processing. We've used this book as both a historical reference to get our folks up to speed, and the material is still pertinent to predictive analysis today. I've been using it since the first edition and find it a useful part of a complete acoustics library.

Very esoteric, helpful if your having and argument about the physics of sound.... Old, out of date pictures and test instruments. Some of which haven't been around for ten years. Very little practical information, you read and read and read looking for some practical conclusions. Absolutely FILLED with mathematical calculations. I'm not put off by these but they are out of balance with there usefulness. This books seems like it was written to fulfill someones PHD requirements. There are some useful chapters on electrical or speaker basics but they seem included only to bring this book down from outer space.

Unfortunately, my English (I am Russian sound engineer living in Moscow) is not good enough to express how important is this book for me. Everything I know about sound systems (apart from my personal experience) I've learned from this book. I could only wish to see it some day to be published in Russian. I would translate it just for fun! There are so many myths in pro audio and sound system installation. This book helps to get rid of them. I read this book every day and every time learn something new. THANK YOU MR. DAVIS!!!

This book will help you to design a P.A. system correctly as well as solve problems with existing systems. It handles all aspects of almost any type of sound system. This book is a must for any person that is serious about sound systems and audio engineering. If you are serious and have no books on the topic, then this is the first one to buy.
