The *real* General
After only reading a few pages of this book I could see that this Toyota has a lethal weapon in business that American companies seen not interested in using - or worse think that thay are using it just fine? Compare "TPS" with "My Years With General Motors" and imagaine who you would rather compete with? Demming said something like "export everything from America... except american management!" This book will show you why.
This book is not a "ISO" type blueprint in that it is a consise overview without much "filler" or stale requirements so don't worry if you donot get the big picture until you have read and maybe reread the book.
One note - I think that just maybe (if I can be so bold) that chapter 3 should be read first then the rest of the book. I also recomend other books (and web searches) on Kaizen by those who have done it for as long as Mr. Ohno.
I love this book!

A treasure to high management
I really enjoyed reading Mr. Ohno's book. Even though it is a short book, it is full of ideas that can be applied to any production bussiness.
Even though that the system was created for a car production facility, the concept of "waste" is useful to any type of manufacturing. This idea, coupled with the concept of producing exactly what is sold ( or what the client requests )allows any company to became profitable in times when profit margins get narrower and narrower.

The Essential Book on TPS
I am a former Toyota Engineer and recommend that anyone interested in learning about the Toyota Production System a.k.a. lean manufacturing this is the place to start. Mr. Ohno is the creator of TPS and he gives a very good overview of how the system works. The book is very easy to read and easy to understand. This book should be read by all upper management employees looking to create a lean environment in their plants. The book will give you a good foundation to start implementing the techniques. It is the best book to read considering it comes from the inventor himself. It is the best you are going to find shy of being actually trained within Toyota's walls.

Difficult material covered simply
This is a short book and as such gets to the point. Explains difficult concepts in a simple way. This book explains how JIT, Kanban, Zero Defects came about. Also shows what is missing from American JIT and that is production leveling.

Excellent explanation of principles of Just In Time Mfg.
Mr. Ohno is the father of Toyota's just in time production system, also called lean manufacturing, though it is more than just that. The book gives an excellent primer on the basic principles of JIT, work-flow, leveling, waste minimization, etc. He also covers the history and application of these philosophies at Toyota. The book is a surprisingly good read, and Mr. Ohno's dynamic and engaging personality shows through. A must read for MBA students, persons in manufacturing or occupations where time is money. ... Excellent resource for the principles of turbocharging
I read this book cover to cover, lent it to a friend, and am now again anxious to read it again. This book is excellent! If you know nothing about turbocharging... this book is for you. If you know a good deal about turbocharging... this book is for you. If you're a turbo-expert,... you'll still want this book. It presents the principles of turbocharging in a way that is understandable on a novice level, yet preserves the details of engineering at a technical level. If you plan to design your own turbocharging system, this book will guide you through various steps and considerations to end up with an efficient, well working design. Everything from intercooling to exhaust manifolds.

Bell gives good information on all aspects of turbo systems.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. It gave me a good understanding of turbo systems, perhaps it is even enough to build my own setup. Bell's book priases the performance of the Bell Aerodyne VATN turbocharger, as well it should - notice the name "Bell?" Even though this bias is there, the book does provide a thorough, easy to read manual for designing, installing and testing turbo systems. I would recommend this book to anyone that wants to learn about turbochargers and their applications. Another good, perhaps more thorough but slightly dated book is "Turbochargers" by Hugh Mcinnes.

Best book on turbocharging I have read.
I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in turbocharging, both factory turbo cars and aftermarket kits on non turbo cars. It covers pretty much every aspect of turbocharging from manifold design, to turbo selection to fueling. I feel having read this book has better equipped me to work with turbochargers.

best book on turbos period!
I have this book as well as a few others on turbos and i would reccomend this over thenm anyday, it is very in depth and adresses all the issues in turbochargers. It is for the most part not boreing it is full of illustrations and pictures which adds up to one of the most thought out and relevant books ive ever read.

great book
This book is very well written. It handles a lot of the basic turbo knowledge that most enthusiast's need to know. What was dissapointing was that there is no real turbo sizing theory, fan blade effientcy equations or a lot of detail in a few other areas. None the less, the book is only about turbo systems and is the easiest to read. This is a great book to read. You may also want to get "Turbochargers" from Hugh MacInnes, it's also a must have, but is out of date and is not very useful on the modern EFI machines. I do like "Force Induction" by A. Graham Bell. A book that is much more knowlegable on the subject of performance turbos. It's always a good idea to get opinions of other great writers. ... Read more

A really scientific approach to the engine practice
This book is my Bible. It does not explain you how to add 2HP to the engine, it explains how all that works and why, with theory, numbers and serious real world tests.
You may be interested in the theory: you'll find all you need to understand more detailled research papers.
You don't need theory: you may simply trust very comprehensive and clear conclusions which explain with figures and numbers how thinks work.
The book covers Spark Ignited and Diesel engines, indirect and direct injected.
The book does not cover recent works on high speed SI (like Honda VTEC) and turbo-diesel engines, as well the indirect injected stratified combustion engines.

the Bible for engine related study and research
almost all the areas concerning internal combustion engines are covered in proper detail. it is useful for related undergrad and grad studies, also an indispensable reference for grad research work in engine technologies.

This book does not overwhelm you with complex formulas. It keeps them simple. This a must have for the do-it-yourselfer automotive shelf.

Interesting for the math-challenged, but needs revision
As soon as I got this book it grabbed me: it even has the history of the word, "horsepower!" There are many useful formulas here, all presented clearly and in layman's language. However, some of the material is dated; there are several pages devoted to programming your computer to figure out the answers to the formulas, and the author says that he has included a section to help in adapting the program to a computing favorite, the Commodore 64! Hmmm, I wonder if my old one still works? That he even mentions this computer is odd, considering that the book was published in '93!

But overall, I like most of the book, and I'm sure it will come it useful as I rebuild my LT1 engine...

Its ok
Its nice cause it has alot of formula's, but it lacks the ones I was really after so for me it was a bit of a waste, nevertheless I can see it being usefull and its cheap so its a worthwhile investment.

Just Fantastic
This is a great reference book for the automobile enthusiast and performance tuner. All of the calculations are grouped into logical sections and explained well. I only wish that it came with a CD or diskette with all of the equations in a spreadsheet format. This is a keeper.

Good basic information

New Wrencher to Old Hand a must have...

Great shipping speed

A great introduction to heavy-duty truck systems
We used this book in our diesel technician class. The book gives you an excellent introduction to every aspect of a heavy-duty truck. I usually shy away from books written by more than one author because of lack of continuity or overcoverage in certain areas. In the case of this book, the authors have done a fantasic job of explaining the topics without any assumptions. The book does a good job in covering cluthes, standard transmission, torque converters, drive shafts, axles, and automatic transmissions. On the subject of brakes, I recommend Delmar's "Today's Technician: Medium/Heavy Duty Truck Brakes." If your thinking of buying a book on this subject matter, you can't go wrong with this selection. Be aware that a third edition has been released.

Awesomeness

Excellent treatment of engine controls
The book title, Understanding Automotive Electronics, is an understatement. This book, in chapters 5, 6, and 7, gives one of the best explanations of modern engine control systems I have ever read. Every major concept of OBD-II vehicles is discussed in clear precise language. These chapters alone are worth the price of the book.

My favorite feature of the book is the end of chapter questions which can be used to test your understanding of the material. And in the back of the book, you can check your answers.

Be careful when buying automotive books. Many are written by good in-shop mechanics who have poor writing skills. This book is different. Mr. Ribbens not only knows his stuff but can communicate it to others as well.

Poorly written college paper in form of cheap book
This is an old college technical paper, put together to look like a book.
It is very poorly written, but probably technically correct.
The book jumps around with no particular sequence or direction.
If you are not an electrochemical engineer in training who likes really bad diagrams ( bordering on hand written ) and REALLY TERRIBLE photographs ( which look like somebody's 3rd pass Xerox copies of twenty five year old black and white photos ) you will not like this book.
It may be of assistance to a engineering student, who may need some of the obscure tables and reeeeally bad graphs.
It looks like this guy printed this on a Commodore 64, in his basement,,,, him self,,,,, twenty years ago!!!!!!!
The technical knowledge is there, but the book is a REEEEEALLY out of date, poor quality, and a piece of CRAP.

But it's a great buy if you are looking for the spark gap setting for a 1977 Cadillac running a hydrogen conversion kit on a gasoline engine!

Author's Comment
The latest edition of Fuel From Water does not contain any specific instructions for constructing an electrolyzer. It does not encourage anyone without sufficient technical background to do so.
The unit conversion errors in a previous edition have been corrected. The book has been in print since 1985 and covers research since 1970. In the recent edition, 25 of the 186 footnotes are later than 1994. This book has been used as one of the texts for courses conducted by professional engineers who are capable of evaluating its scientific accuracy.

Good for more than just info.
"Fuel From Water" is an exceptional book, containing anything the mind desires when entering the field of a hydrogen econonmy and/or technology. The book covers electroylsers; solid state polymer catalysts, 2 container seperation, and sulfur types.

Peavy goes into the fuel cell technologies such as pem, sofc. The types of storage of hydrogen with a non-bias opinion on the advantages and disadvantages of the storage devices. The book has more information on this topic than many others in its class. It is definately worth every penny, even if it is to open your eyes or to expand on this fuel technology.

High Density Information In Plain English
I learned more in five minutes of reading this book than in months of wading through subject indexes in the library (much of the information cannot be found with on-line sources). More people should be made aware of the ideas this book offers in helping solve the world problem of energy. Fuel From Water is what I was looking for and I will put it to good use. Having always been interested in alternate energy sources, and since I am involved in electronics manufacturing, I find the production of electrical energy a fascinating subject. Peavey has done much of the work for me. A friend borrowed the book. He was thrilled to find that much information in one volume. He didn't return it. He just handed me the money to buy another.

How to build a smoking crater with H2
As an engineer who both uses hydrogen and can work the math, I'm astonished that no one has corrected Peavey. He mixes units, get equations wrong and just plain can't spell. A decelerating engine is "braking" not "breaking", for example. His thermodynamic computations are often wrong once you work them out, his "borrowing" of other sources is painful where "propane" was not changed to "hydrogen" is all cases in a paragraph. Incredible. This text is very nearly the "Anarchist's Cookbook" of renewable energy -- there's a lot of words, some of it correct, but someone's going to get badly hurt if they actually follow this guide. All that, and a decade out of date to boot. If Amazon would take the book back, I'd gladly send them the ashes from the woodstove. ... Read more

Excellent book
The information in this book is just as relavant now as it was when it was written back in 1972. Physics is physics, after all. The book gave me a much clearer understanding of header theory. My only complaint is that Smith and Morrison obviously wrote this book for engineers, and I'm not one. I had to struggle to understand some of the concepts, particularly on tri-y header design; but in the end, it was definitely worth it. The exhaust concepts are equally applicable to carbs and fuel injection. The only things lacking were crossovers and merge collectors, but I guess those things weren't invented in 1972. This book will give you a basic grounding in header design theory, and will enable you to discern a set of well-designed headers from a useless tangle of pipes. If you plan on building a set of custom headers, this book is definitely required reading.

In desperate need of updating!
Very outdated. I regret not having read the reviews here prior to purchasing this book. The last time this book was updated was 1972! There is nothing in the way of forced induction. Turbochargers are not mentioned and there is a single reference to superchargers on page 17! "Fuel Injector" is mentioned once. I am definitely sending this one back. Not the first time I have been disappointed with Bentley Publishing. FYI, 1972 was the year Pong came out. As I said, the book desperately needs to be updated.

highly recommended if you...
I have designed race cars for years and I definitely recommend this book. I found information in this book that I have not seen published anywhere else. It explains how tri-y headers work. It explains the theory behind pulse tuning of exhaust and intakes. The intake pulse tuning is the basis of why Porsche created intake manifolds that effectively change between several intake runner lengths. These theories are even backed up by proven test results performed by engineers. There are even simple equations that are directly applicable to designing an intake or exhaust. This book is "old" but then so is the 4-stroke engine and although today's engines may seem "new" they are fundamentally the same as the "old" ones which makes the material in this book very worthwhile. If you want to know more than what intake or exhaust you should *buy* and are possibly thinking about creating your own intake or exhaust system, definitely buy this book. If you are looking for a book like this but even more technical, I suggest the 2 volumes titled "The Internal Combustion Engine in Theory and Practice" by Charles Fayette Taylor.

Stuck in the '60's
I read the book cover to cover. My impression is that this book contains exhaust and intake design information that was current in the 50's and '60s. Very little information for modern 4 or 5 valve per cylinder engines, and fuel injection tuned intake systems. No information on practical design of V8 performance exhaust system for street emmissions legal exhaust. Needs updated.

Deja vu
When my copy ofScientific Design of Exhaust & Intake Systems by John C. Morrison(Contributor), Philip Hubert Smith arrived I was quite excited. A scholarly text on intakes and exhaust! When I went to put it with others like it on my book shelf I realized that it was written by the same author that wrote The Design and Tuning of Competition Engines, Philip Smith. Both books are opaque, and aren't very logical when it comes to the flow of the explanations. There are lots of equations without explanation. It could use a rewrite. ... Read more

Heavy on math but lots of useful info
This book is all that it promises - if you are unsatisfied with the explanations given for handling behavior in "consumer-level" handling books you won't be disappointed. Great engineering and vehicle dynamics book!
Great book, kind of in the same category as "Race Car Vehicle Dynamics," but without such a racing orientation. Great explanation on the dynamics of tires. Slip angles, where tire judder comes from, and the like. Can get pretty mathematical in it's explanations, but since that was what I was looking for (mathematics explains everything) that part was fine. It has a great explanation of roll centers, withe the accompaning diagrams of jacking and the forces and their directions. Really helped me understand that complex subject.

My review copy of "Car Stereo Cookbook", (How to Design, Choose, and Install Car Stereo Systems), is very well written by Mark Rumreich. It is published by Mc Graw-Hill who kindly provided me with my review copy. If you ever intend to spend serious money on a quality car stereo system then buy this book. The common pitfalls to avoid, as disclosed by "The Car Stereo Cookbook" will handsomely repay your modest investment.

Car Stereo Systems usually require the expenditure of some really "serious" money to get the desired results, and unless your decisions are very informed ones, it is all too easy to get burned big time financially. I honestly recommend you definitely buy a copy of "Car Stereo Cookbook" to save yourself the financial pain.

Car Stereo Cookbook - A Must Have Reference Book
I had a basic knowledge of car stereo before I purchased this book. The book helped me to design and install a multi speaker/multi amp system in my truck. It explained in great detail how to choose your components,especially speakers and speaker boxes. I found it well organized in that the author leaves no stone unturned. There are lots of details which help make your install more professional. The book gives you the tools to create a system that is right for your vehicle. To me this book is well worth the money and I would recommend it to anyone wanting to design/install their own system

Not very helpful for a beginner do-it-yourself
This book covers a lot of basics, but it contains virtually no help with running your wires through your car, which to me seems to be the biggest logistical problem with installing car stereo, when you are an amateur. The step of wiring your amp to your car battery is explained in a line or two, with no hints on how to retrieve the wires on the other side of the car's firewall.

It also is a shameless plug for Crutchfield, their name gets mentioned every second page or so.

Contains some helpful tips
With a book of almost 300 pages I expected much more detailed explanations. The author introduces technical aspects but hardly ever explains what they mean ie cross over slopes. Set-up information is limited to wiring diagrams, you never seen any real installation pictures. And then there are diagrams for dual preamps head outputs but the pictures show one one set going to the amps. Then there is a huge chapter on subwoofers and the author gives no information on techniques for mounting the box to the car. The head installation was way to general. Good points made are setting up speakers for best ohm ratings (serial vs parallel), determining voltage with a multimeter, what power cable gauge to use. The book is several years old and seems out of date on some subject matter. There is also a lot of dialog on things that are obvious. Consider this book for tips, not as a bible for installing since you won't find too much on how to actually install anything.
