Great for all levels of Miata Enthusiasts
Keith Tanner knows the Miata and he is great at passing along his experience and knowledge.

I'm no mechanic extraordinaire but I have always wanted to have a fun car to work on so I bought a 1990 Miata. Since purchasing the car I have been through several of the projects listed in his book. Each time it was Keith's guidance and experience that made me feel comfortable with what I was doing. It is really nice to have re-assurance when you are drilling holes in your car and or bashing parts of it with a hammer. The older cars like mine don't always give up easily like the newer ones.

Thanks to Keith my car has achieved a level beyond stock that I'm very happy with. The overall cost/effort involved was quite reasonable and that was important. Keith does a good job letting you understand the cost (money, effort, etc..) versus reward (power, responsiveness, etc..). This lets you pick the projects that help you change your car into something that better suits you within limits that suit you.

I strongly recommend this book to any Miata owner with an interest in maintaining/modifying his own car. With this book in hand it is very unlikely my near 14 year old car will ever be back in the dealer shop again. ... Read more

Not a bad book, but outdated and too simplistic
This book tries to explain Mastercam software to novice students. The chapters and topics are well thought out but don't go into nearly enough depth. One big problem is the book's use of Mastercam V7, which is 4-5 years old. A book published in 2002 should use software from 2002. The screenshots are excellent, but the book would need to double in size and feature the latest software to become a contender in the CAD/CAM marketplace. ... Read more

Excellent Technical Reference
For those of you who are looking for more than the typical Automotive Magazine information regarding automotive electronics – this book is a GOLDMINE. It is the best technical reference I have ever seen and the information is accurate. The author James E. Duffy knows more about modern automotive electronics than anyone else that I have found does. This book impressed me so much (after I had borrowed a copy) I searched it out on the net to purchase my own copy. Mr. Duffy covers the electrical systems in depth, all the ins and outs of computer control in the Big Three plus more. What interested me the most of the practical hands on approach to testing sensors and the specs of devices used. Want to know they typical outputs of Oxygen Sensors so you can test them with a handheld digital meter rather than buy some $$$ outdated tester? This is the book for you. Another example – one concise page covers pulling the trouble codes from GM, Ford and Chrysler vehicles. The garage charged my son $$$ to pull the codes on his Neon and said the results were inconclusive. I was able to pull the codes using the steps in this book and trace it to the EGR Solenoid. Starters, alternators, injection, it is all here in one book, you can throw away all the Fix- It books sold in auto parts stores which have maybe one chapter at the back covering eight model years of changes on three pages. I don’t think you will find anything better than this book. Good Luck.

I felt the book was outdated. Much of the content seems to be from much earlier editions and not relevant for todays more sophisticated automotive electronics. It would be more suited for an enrty level mechanic. The preview for the book is somewhat misleading, makes you feel it offers more than it really does. Reads Like A Novel With Lots of Facts
This is an excellent book written by a Detroit bureau chief for the New York Times. He worked on and off on the book for almost five years and has produced a compelling and fact filled read of 440 pages plus notes. Excellent job.

I would not call the book "anti-SUV" per se, but rather it is a comprehensive review of the vehicle with some related comments on mini-vans. The facts speak for themselves. An SUV is a passenger vehicle that uses a truck base (motor, frame, suspension) with a special body made from a combination of truck parts and custom parts with luxurious interiors and lots of sound proofing. It costs the same to make as a truck but sells at the price of a luxury car - or higher - and has a marketing prestige value now associated with the vehicle.

The book covers the history of the SUV vehicle type, how the vehicle evolved from the early Ford SUV built by Henry Ford for camping trips at the beginning of the last century, panel delivery vans, the history of the WWII Jeep, the GM Suburban, the Jeep Cherokee, and the Ford Explorer, etc

The author covers the costs to make the vehicle, the taxes on the vehicle, the import barriers on imports, how the unions viewed the vehicle, how the gas consumption CAFÉ regulations were circumvented, how politicians have supported the vehicle, and how environmental groups have tacitly supported the vehicle, etc. The bottom line is that the basic construction is relatively cheap while the selling price is high. So the SUV's have become the cash cows of the auto industry leading to economic revival at GMC, Ford, and Chrysler with similar revivals of the local economies in Michigan, Detroit, and Ohio. Many auto executive careers have been tied to the SUV success and this is discussed in the book.

From a marketing viewpoint the turning point for the industry was the black 1986 Cherokee Limited with gold exterior trim. That car and the SUV's that followed were big seller in the cities and became a substitute for the luxury car. That vehicle was followed by products from GM and Ford, of ever increasing size and profit including the Lincoln Navigator, Cadillac Escalade, etc. These latter vehicles generate huge profits for the auto makers and have in fact displaced the luxury car and have become very popular in unlikely places such as New York city.

Cars and SUV's are marketed and sold by appealing to emotions not common sense. Despite the truck base technology that gives poor handling compared to a car, and the heavy weight and truck engines that give poor gas economy, the car companies have pushed the SUV in order to capitalize on the simple truck technology for the sake of fat profits. In a free society that makes good business sense. However the down side is that unlike Europe that has managed to keep oil consumption relatively constant over the past decade or so the US has increased its oil consumption by 50% due in part to these high gas consumption vehicles - fed by imports of oil from the unstable Middle East. In addition to the increased fuel consumption, the environment has been burdened with more pollution by less efficient (truck) vehicles that has compounded the insult to the environment. Finally, because of the truck construction such as the weight and the high center of gravity of these vehicles - although seeming to be safer, the SUV has a poorer safety records both for their occupants and for the cars they hit - as recorded by the insurance agencies - than for regular mid sized cars. So based on the record the SUV is more expensive, has poor truck like handling, wastes gas, and is even less safe than a mid sized car. One can draw their own conclusion.

The author does an excellent job summarizing the facts. He describes the auto executives running the companies, the technology, how the CAFÉ laws were circumvented, safety, etc. It is a compelling read.

How can we be so short-sighted?
If you have any compassion for the future of children and other living things, you will be downright frightened by the information and inferences in this book. The author has amassed and analyzed an overwhelming amount of evidence condemning the greed and selfishness of people who produce and purchase these dangerous vehicles. We should all open our eyes to the consequences of using SUVs as they are now classified and regulated. The quality of life that we want to create for our children is being seriously compromised. How can we stop the proliferation of these vehicles of mass destruction? This book presents some cogent suggestions...

Informative but not Mind-blowing...
Well, I'm in the market for a car, and reading this book was sort-of an eye opener. Bradsher indicts SUV's for a host of crimes, but I can't imagine his case converting many who didn't agree with his charges prior to reading this book. You might want to file "High and Mighty" in the "preaching to the choir" section with "Fast Food Nation" and "Earth in the Balance".

That being said, it is a well researched, informative book. Bradsher isn't afraid to criticize the environmental movement, which he believes was co-opted by the sophisticated marketing of the auto industry. His chapters on the history and development of the SUV are first rate. Also interesting was his thorough documentation of the POSITIVE effect the SUV has had on communities in the United States where these behemoths are built. These descriptions, coupled with a tendency for Bradsher to assert harms in the future tense, combine to diminish the strength of his over all argument: that SUV's are baaaaaaaaad.

One thing is for certain: SUV's benefited from a series of regulatory loopholes designed to benefit "light trucks". The very existence of these loopholes are detrimental to the safety and health of American drivers, and action should be take to amend them forthwith. ... Read more

Close, but could be better
Add it to your collection, however, it has it's shortcomings. The author is defintly knowledgeable about his subject, however the presentation of the material could be better. The book reads like a compilation of magazine articles at times. If you have a good collection of VW Trends & Hot VW's magazines, you probably don't need this book. The author is also from the UK, so there are references to items, that if you are in the USA, may not be practical (i.e. brakes from a Horizon Talbot or something like that). He presents alot of options on various topics, but never really tells you what product "in reality" is the best (pros/cons). He also does not really get into true suspension tuning. Things are left pretty loose (i.e. adding an anti-sway bar will improve handling)....Well, as a race driver myself I could disagree with this statement in certain cases. He does not outline, basic vehicle dynamics tunings. Example: He does not say that Stiffening the rear of the car increases oversteer, and stiffing the front increases understeer. Let alone define under/over steer. The affect of tire pressures, alignment, etc. These TRUELY "tuning for High-Performance" items are either left out or glossed over.

Unless, you need a good reference on Brake "Options", or how to shorten you chasis for kit cars or Baja's, spend your money on "Keith Seume's book on Volkswagen Bug Performance". If you already own Keith's Performance book, you probably don't need this book.

Stongest Point: R&Ring King and Link Pins, Ball Joints, basic maintenance on the supspension.

If the book were titles "VW Suspension Maintenence and Options" I would have rated it a 4. The "high performance" angle despite the many brake options is misleading.

A Good Start
As the first book written about volkswagen suspension,(that I know of), it has a lot of good information; I was however, a little dissapionted in the way the information was presented, it is sometimes hard to find what you want without having to read a whole chapter. I was looking for a comprehensive book that included setups for racing, including formula-vee, and this book is geared more towards just street applications. good info on brakes. Informative, Indeed, ... indeed.
It may be noteworthy that I first declare my own prowess in the art of auto mechanics and engine maintenance - that being none whatsoever. Thus I started my journey through these grease-stained orange covers (evidently I picked up an older printing) still wet behind the ears, green at the gills, etc. I have emerged with a great deal of newly acquired knowledge nested in my brain. I think it would be equally useful to a seasoned pro that needs to look up a particular detail. The book provides detailed information on the various parts of the standard (int. comb. gasoline engine) automobile; starting with the fundamentals of a single-cylinder engine, working up from there, and eventually taking the reader through ignition, cooling, lubrication, fuel, exhaust, transmission, and electronic systems. This is a textbook (which explains the price), so it includes questions at the end of each chapter, which are helpful. Also, you should realize that picking up a book, even this one, will not be extremely useful if you don't have an old block or something to actually check out. Having said that, if you just desire a 'fundamental' understanding of auto mechanics, this is still a good bet (although you may want to pick it up at your library instead of buying it). Five stars!

Awesome book!
As an avid car lover, I have always wanted to know what makes them "tick". With literally no prior automotive experience, this book fit my needs exactly! You, too, will be talking "compression ratios" and "camshafts" in no time at all! And this book makes it fun to learn, easy to learn, and is simply enjoyable to read, put down for a bit, read some more, etc....

I looked at several other books as well (Bosch, ACE, etc.), but this is the best $40 I have ever spent!

Now, I'll be able to talk with the mechanics about my repairs, and help to make sure I am not getting taken for a ride! Plus, I can now understand what makes my 'Vette go 180+ mph! Yeee-Hah!

This is a must for any real car enthusiast!
Reading 'Auto Fundamentals' is like taking a college Auto Tech class at your own leasure! Pretty much every question you have about the fundamental automotive systems WILL be answered by the time you finish this textbook. This is an absolute must-read for anyone looking to get into an automotive field, no matter what branch. Plenty of pictures (with thier own accompanying explanations) are placed throughout the book to give you plenty of visual aides to go along with the text. Although this is an excellent read, there are a few parts of the book that can overwhelm you (eg. automatic transmissions/transaxles and power steering systems we're so over my head I had to skip those chapters). The author goes into extreme detail at the beginning of the book, but that detail kind of tapers off near the end. Not so much that you won't be able to comprehend what your reading, but enough that it may get a little frustrating to read. I'm still giving this 5 stars though, it more than deserves it for it's wide variety of content and (for the most part) clarity.

This book is just incredible
I purchased this book to gain a better understanding of the inner workings of engines. I was a bit hesitant at first because of the somewhat high price tag, but after reading only the first part of the book, the amount of knowledge I have gained is priceless. The book is incredibly detailed but everything is explained quite clearly and in easy to understand laymans terms. The authors have taken a very technical engineering subject and have successfully made it enjoyable to read. The abundance and clarity of diagrams and technical cut-away drawings in the book is astounding.
