5-0 out of 5 stars A must for anyone who needs to understand textile basics
The Fabric Reference, along with the Fabric Glossary provides the best comprehensive reference of basic textiles that you can obtain anywhere in today's market. To make it a perfect reference set, you can purchase the Fabric Glossary Swatch Set directly from Ms. Humphries, which provides fabric samples to be taped into the Fabric Glossary while giving the history, manufacturing (weave, knit, lace, etc.) description and fabric content for each swatch allowing for a realistic study of fabrics. This Fabric Glossary can be continually added to as you find new fibers and fabrics - keeping an updated reference at your finger tips.
These boks are a must for fabric designers, interior designers, pattern drafters and anyone interested in fabrics or textiles, this is a three part set, which when purchased becomes all inclusive. It is rare to find any books on textiles where you can actually touch the fabrics, providing a realistic knowledge of specific make-up and texture of the fabrics. I searched for years to find a book which I could use to give a compressive overview of the textile industry, before I found Ms. Humphries set of books, and I have been using it for the past three years as the foundation of my college course. Please note that in the fall of 2003, the third revision came out and it provides a wealth of information about the new micro-fibers that are found in today's market.
This three part set (2 parts you can purchase from this company and the swatch set you need to purchase separately - information to do this, is in each book) is the best reference of textiles available. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars A beautiful mess
While this book does have it's good points You need a reference book to get anything of use from it. My professor disliked it so much that we switched text. And occasionally did problems from Froment so he could justify assigning the text for graduate kinetics.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best and most advanced book on reaction engineering
This book is very comprehensive and advanced level. It is the only book you will ever need on reaction engineering. It thoroughly explains chemical kinetics and steady-state and transient reactor operation. It suited both for undergraduate and graduate students, although the graduate student will grasp the subtleties of reactor modeling better. It is extensively referenced with relevant scientific literature and contains ample current research on the topic. In comparison, Fogler's book will not serve you beyond your initial reaction engineering course and serves strictly undergraduate food.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference book, good textbook for graduate course
This book presents an excellent amount of high quality information, it is the best reference book I have found for chemical reactor analysis and design. Using it as a textbook in Master or Ph.D. level courses must be accompanied by good lectures, I used it when I took the graduate course in 1995, our professor did very good lectures, and that was more than enough to learn a lot and enjoy the topic. When comparing this book with Fogler's we have to step down to another level of analysis, Fogler's book is the equivalent book for undergraduate level courses, it is a good reference for basis and step by step learning, and for understanding the number crunching.

5-0 out of 5 stars a book that always gives you new knowledge
This is a difficult textbook for undergraduate students and for those graduate students who only want to pass the exam by taking class notes. In fact, this a book you will never feel that you know enough about it. Each time you read it, you will find something new. Now, it is on my bookshelf and shows me what is the right approach of modeling. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Screen Printing History
If you want a good history from the 60's of screen printing then this is the book for you. It was first published in 1963 and hasn't been updated since. Old black and white pictures are included that would be seen in an old Popular Mechanics to include the hand drawn illustrations. If your looking to review or learn new techniques or just refresh your memory this is not the book to get. I'm starting my own business and after being out of it for a few years I was wanting a refresher book I could look to. This was not the one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Complete Step by Step Process
This book gives a clear and complete picture of every aspect of press operation and silk screen technique-from individually operated manual presses to modern automatic presses capable of turning out 2000-3000 impressions an hour-and indicates the subject, this volume includes practically everything of importance known about the silk screen process.

1-0 out of 5 stars don't waste your time
if you are looking for a D.I.Y. book on silk screening look elsewhere. this is more of a historical review of the process. the book was copywritten in the '60's so there isn't any "new technology" in the content.

4-0 out of 5 stars Well worth the money spent.
This is one of the better books I've read so far. The recipes are large, but the first few batches you make will probably be given away, so these are big enough for you to keep some as well as give away.
The history given is helpful, it was a pleasure to read. As for the methods she uses with the blender, it is alot of work, but it is faster than stirring by hand. Personally, I use my stick blender, less work all around.
It is not nessasary to use palm or coconut oils in soap, and they aren't even the base for all soaps as another reviewer wrote. My best soaps have olive oil as the base and no coconut or palm at all.

Milk soaps aren't for someone completely new to soapmaking.. try making basic soaps first. The recipes are all over the internet, but this book is easy enough to follow that someone who has been making soaps for a month or two will have no problems following it. Actually someone who has never made soap would be able to follow it, but a little experience before trying something that is tricky like milk soaps, wouldn't hurt.
Overall, for the money spent this book is worth it. Much more detailed and well thought out than another soapmaking book I read recently.

5-0 out of 5 stars Anyone can make milk soap with this easy explained book
I hold this book close to my heart... It is easy explained and has all the information you need to make milk soap...If you want to make soap start with this book first... All the ingredients you need you will find in your grocery store, unlike other soap books I have read... I wished I would have purchases this book first when I started making soap...This book is a winner...You will not regret buying it... I didn't ;)

1-0 out of 5 stars using milk is easy, why is this a separate book?
Making soap with milk as the liquid in the recipe, or as a portion of the liquid, is pretty easy if you've ventured forth and attempted to make soap. If you already own one of the basic books as from Bramson or Cavitch, you're 3/4 of the way there and this book is superfluous.

Milk soaping is one of the biggest topics one finds addressed on the internet in the soap boards, it should also be noted. The author's methods never worked for me because they involve too many steps, but I suppose it comes down to learning a certain way and being set in one's ways whether something is useful technique or not.

If you're making soap, you don't need this book at all. If you're looking to learn to make soap, get this book if you like complicated procedure. Otherwise, just get the Cavitch book(s) and take her superfatting ideas with a hefty grain of salt.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not for the novice but an excellent book
This is one of my all time favorite books on making soap simply because anyone who owns goats or other livestock for milk, will find yet another way to put the best milk in the world to good use. This isn't for someone just starting out or for someone who lacks a sense of adventure or understands that trial and error are part of the journey be it making soap, dipped candles, canning, sewing etc.......

5-0 out of 5 stars Best jump start on first making soap yet
The best introduction to soap making I have read. Clear instructions tells what to expect and what can go wrong. Clear list of materials not only for milk soap but for regular soaps too. Clearly written by someone who has made alot of soap. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Prelude to Doi-Edward's Theory of Polymer Dynamics
The finest aspect of the book is its thickness; in just over 100 pages Doi essentially summarises everything in Polymer Dynamics. In some sense the book is meant as a bridge between the graduate level courses on Polymer Dynamics/Physics and book: The Theory of Polymer Dynamics and hence is assessible only with some background on basics. Nevertheless its serves its purpose pretty well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction to theorerical polymer physics
Firstly, this book is NOT for someone wanting an introduction to polymer science. There is little here that would be of use in a first course in polymers. The book is very slim (a scarce 113 pages), divided into five chapters covering individual polymer chains, melts, gels, dynamics in dilute solutions, and finally dynamics in the entanglement regime. The intense detail of Doi and Edwards is left out but the level of mathematical description is comparable. Strongly recommended as an introduction to polymer physics, especially because it covers a lot of important issues in a very brief, easy-to-understand, but rigorous fashion. ... Read more

This is a very thorough publication dealing with fluoroplastics that are being processed by methods other than shaping the melt. The book has a good flow and describes very thoroughly fundamentals, properties and structure, monomers, their synthesis and properties, polymerization methods, processing and fabrication methods. Additional chapters discuss properties, applications, safety, disposal and recycling of this type of commercial fluoropolymers. At the end of the book, there are additional very useful data on polytetrafluoroethylene and polychlorotrifluoroethylene in the form of appendices as well as a large glossary. With the wealth of valuable information and data this book is one of a kind and a valuable resource for anyone seeking information on the subject.

4-0 out of 5 stars My Handy Dandy Spa Party Reference
I recently threw a Spa Bachelorette Party for a dear friend and made four recipes (Cleansing Oatmeal & Honey Paste, Pineapple & Olive Oil Mask, Lemon Mint Toner, Avocado Hand Rub) from this book. Though some ingredients were harder to find than others (such as lanolin) the benefits were amazing. We went out dancing after our pampering and even with all of the sweating, my skin still felt great! And the next day, after a night of partying, my husband commented that my skin had a nice glow:) I may just throw away my over the counter cleansers.

The Good: The recipes I used worked! I like the shape and the size of the book as it was compact and didn't get in the way of making recipes (though I had to keep the book open with a paperweight) or shopping for ingredients (imagine lugging a coffee sized book to the health food store!)

The Bad: Since I was preparing for a spa party, I wish that a "final servings yielded" were provided. Also, length of storage information would be very helpful. Lastly, I wish there were more spa cuisine recipes included, especially ones that use the same ingredients as the treatments! I ended up looking elsewhere for meal ideas to use my leftover food ingredients.

Lastly, keep in mind that this was my first home spa experience. I've never tried recipes from other home spa books, and I've yet to try the body and hair treatments from this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars a nice supplement
this book provides nice little things that you can do yourself when you have alot of time and no cash to spend on spa treatments. . .a nice holiday gift though. . .

3-0 out of 5 stars Useful information for home spa treatments
This book was useful in some ways, dissapointing in others. As a previous reviewer pointed out, many of the ingredients that the recipes called for were not common household items. However, the instructions in this book are clear and concise and I particularly liked the description of all those various aromatherpay oils and what they do. I think I was expecting this book to be a little larger in size, more like something nice I could stick out on my coffee table. It does have a very good variety of various treatments for different hair and skin types. I think something like this would appeal to someone who is more of a "do-it-yourself"-er. It is interesting for me to learn about what would go into a lotion, but hard to picture myself actually assembling all the ingredients to make all these things when I could buy the equivalent at the drugstore.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but not a keeper
I was a rather disappointed in this book. I guess I was looking for something that would have spa treatments that I could make from my own kitchen using items I already had on hand. Unfortunately, most of these treatments require things like beeswax and essential oils. I only found one recipe that I was able to use the minute I received the book.

3-0 out of 5 stars No Secrets
There are no Secrets. It is just like other do it yourself at home spa books. Though I do like the treatments, I wish it was a little different. Worth the money if your looking for an at home treatment book. Give it a try. My version of 3 stars is slightly above average. ... Read more

Book Description

More than 15 years have passed since the first edition of Polymer Extrusion was published - making it one of the most enduring (and best-selling) books on the subject. And now a new edition of this classic book is available.

Completely revised, the goal of Polymer Extrusion, 4th edition is to bridge the gap between theory and practice. This book demonstrates how extrusion theory can be applied to actual extrusion problems such as screw design, die design, and troubleshooting. Because screw design is an area where misconceptions can still be found, a major chapter is devoted to the logical, step-by-step analysis of the screw design and optimization process.

Extensive changes and additions to this new edition make it a must-have for practicing polymer process engineers and chemists. Professors and students in these areas will also find this book very useful. ... Read more

Book Description

Gore-Tex®, chemical protective clothing, architectural fabrics, air bags…Intensive research and development in coated-fabric materials and processes has led to new and improved products for a wide range of consumer, industrial, medical, and military applications. Coated Textiles: Principles and Applications provides the first comprehensive, up-to-date presentation of this technology and its applications. From coating materials and substrates to coating methods, physical properties, and testing techniques, the author presents detailed examinations of the chemistry, processing, properties, and applications of coated fabrics. He explores the full range of applications, including foul weather clothing, architectural, automotive, and other nonapparel uses, and high-tech applications, such as chemical protective clothing, thermochromic fabrics, camouflage nets, and metal coated fabrics. Worldwide, the production of coated fabrics for defense alone is a multi-billion dollar business, yet the interdisciplinary nature of the field has left the published work scattered throughout the polymer science, textile technology, and chemical engineering literature. Coated Textiles: Principles and Applications offers a unique opportunity to acquire an authoritative, one-stop resource valuable both as a reference and as a stimulus for developing new and improved coated textile products. ... Book Description

Written by an analytical Coatings Chemist and consultant with eighteen years of experience solving coating's problems, this is the first book that is devoted entirely to failure analysis of these problems. It deals with field and laboratory methods (both analytical and physical) involved in determining the causes of premature paint and coatings failures in the commercial and industrial arena. Practical examples are included to show both the thought processes behind such investigations and how the individual techniques complement each other.
Key features:

  • Combines coatings chemistry and analytical techniques in one volume, giving both theory and applications
  • Case studies of several coatings failures are presented, discussing why specific methods are used followed by an analysis of the results
  • Does not assume too great a knowledge of the chemistry involved

Book Description

The release of batch control standard ANSI/ISA-88.01-1995, Batch Control Part 1: Models and Terminology, has led to revolutionary advances in the way factories design, implement, and integrate flexible, modular processes into the enterprise. Now, for the first time, here's a book that cuts through the opaque language and arcane symbols of the standard and explains it in clear, user-friendly language.

Applying S88 covers all aspects of the ANSI/ISA-88.01-1995 standard. Written from a user's perspective, Parshall and Lamb discuss their implementation of ISA-88, offering a wealth of examples and explanations to make it applicable across a wide range of batch industries. From designing better processes to combining recipes with equipment control to execution validation test plans, this book offers both an introduction to ISA-88 as well as expert insights into applying it.

Parshall and Lamb's clear, lighthearted style makes this the ideal introduction to ISA-88 for control engineers, project engineers, technicians, operators, information technology professionals, engineering or IT supervisors, and mid- to upper-level managers. ... Read more
