5-0 out of 5 stars Great for students/interns and young process engineers!
I'm a summer intern in an oil refinery and few of my tasks were to rerate exchangers, fin fan coolers, etc., and I didn't have any experience whatsoever! They don't teach at school how this equipment works in a process context and if you don't have a clue on what you're doing, this is the best book to refer to. It is very elementary, but at the same time, it can be very specific. It goes through fundamental steps for troubleshooting general processes as well as clear explanations of how most of the equipment in the industry work. Highly recommended at any level!

5-0 out of 5 stars How Process Equipment Works
As a licensed professional engineer and consultant in the Houston, TX area, I found this to be an excellent and useful book. It simplifies and demystifies fundamental chemical engineering principals and effectively illustrates how theory applies to understanding the root cause/s of real world plant operating problems.

The Lieberman's also do a fine job of making the book interesting to read through the use of non-process plant related anecdotes. These anecdotes help the reader understand the principals presented by drawing upon experiences and situations common to everyday life.

I highly recommend this book to engineers of all experience levels who work in the petroleum refining and chemical process industries. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for practical applications
I bought this book hoping to learn DOE using Taguchi Methods and apply what I learned to real life problems in my work. It was very helpful. Not only did it help me learn the methods I needed to perform my testing at work but I did it in only 8 days of reading. The book was very easy to read and the examples helped me understand everything I needed to know to apply this method to real situations. A great buy for anyone looking to learn Taguchi Methods.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Introduction to More Effective Experimentation
The challenge that all research directors and senior scientists face is that virtually all scientists are originally trained to believe that the only proper way to conduct an experiment is to vary only one factor at a time while holding all other variables fixed. This belief, which can be shown mathematically to be totally incorrect, has been a drag on the scientific community for decades, causing experimental science to be much less productive than it should be. In fact, by properly designing experiments in which several factors are varied in a carefully thought out, predetermined pattern, much more information can be obtained with far fewer experiments.

What Dr. Roy has achieved in his book on experimental design is to clearly explain why this is so and to provide the tools which allows his readers to overcome their ingrained beliefs and adopt a more effective method of designing their own experimental programs.

Of particular interest is his discussion of experimental design using orthogonal arrays (Chapter 4) for it is in this part of the book that the full power of modern approaches to experimentation become most evident. Here, he illustrates how a set of as few as eight experiments can be used to determine how three presumable independent factors, such as time, temperature and concentration, can be studied to obtain detailed information not only on how each factor individually effects the quality of the final product, but also on the extent to which the factors interact.

Historically, learning this type of technique for designing experiments has been a daunting task since somewhat tedious mathematically manipulations are required for both the design of the experiment and the analyses of the resulting data. However, included with Dr. Roy's book is complete software which eliminates the need for the experimenter to either manually solve the handful of equations needed to extract the results in useful form, or to develop custom spreadsheets in an attempt to automate the process. The software is easy to use and includes all of the tables and data which are used in the book to illustrate the principles of experimental design. The software is also capable of assisting the experimenter in designing sets of up to eight concurrent experiments, rapidly analyzing the data and generating graphical and tabular presentations which greatly aid in the interpretation of the results.

This is an extremely useful book which can have a major beneficial effect on the productivity of any laboratory engaged in experimental process research such as crystal growth, chemical synthesis or manufacturing. By allowing the reader to overcome his innate aversion to varying more than one experimental factor at a time, the book makes it possible for the reader to become a much more productive scientist or engineer and become a role model for his coworkers to emulate.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must have for Quality Control Professionals and Educators
First, I completely agree with all the good things mentioned in the other reviews, but wish to add the following comments:

1. The discussion group (usenet) hosted by Dr Roy is fantastic. If by chance you don't "get it" from reading the book, a simple question posted to the usenet frequently gets you an answer, often within a few hours (its a vocal crowd!!). Many times, the author himself responds to usenet questions. And, on at least one instance, after I repeatdly asked my question, he began exchanging emails with me, which then led to some pleasant phone disscussions.

2. User friendly software and support. See above.

3. Taguichi is frequently attacked by full blown Design of Experiments statistical types who miss the whole point. I strongly encourage all professionals interested in gauging quality control to try out his books and the free software downloads....

An excellent book with powerful software and support......

Reads like a winner, looks like a winner, performs likes a winner....... need I say more...

5-0 out of 5 stars User friendly
Dr.Roy's book is amazing. He has covered almost everything you need to know about the Taguchi method - even meticulous things. This book will suite both for beginners as well as for experts. The CD which comes along with this book is very helpful in understanding the concept behind the analysis with more than 50 examples. If at all you are looking for a book about Taguchi design of Experiments - I highly recommend one and all to buy Dr.Roy's book and benefit through his work.
I started as a beginner and now Iam an expert in Taguchi analysis - and the credit goes to Dr.Roy - he also helps personally in answering your questions.
Thank you very much Dr.Roy.
Three CHEERS to Dr.Roy!

3-0 out of 5 stars Brief review of DOE using Taguchi approach by R. Roy
Dr. Roy has been able to translate into everyday language some of the most difficult concepts of the Taguchi methodology. Whereas the book does not provide the reader with much theoretical background, it doeas provide ample examples and practical approaches to the methodology. Excellent sections are the discussions about the OAs and the modified arrays as well as the ANOVA. The references to the CD ROM are well placed.

The shortcomings of the book are the very poor screens from the software package. In fact, in some cases they are unreadable. Another shortcoming is the absence of any discussion of tolerance design using the Taguchi methodology.

Overall: a good book for reference. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars An Absolute Essential for Chemists!
As a chemist, I am often in need of techniques for purification of various chemicals. Often time is a constraint and the "best" technique may be too time consuming, if one even knows what it is. This text offers several alternatives to the purificatin of most common compounds (especially solvents), including the best way to make the compound pure as well as other known techniques. One can then choose, based on the reaction one is doing whether one needs to use the best techniques or the fastest technique to get mostly pure material or somewhere inbetween. Unfortunately, often the text does not list the actual percent purity that each technique can yield (though it is often easy enough to guess which methodology will yield the best results.) An invaluable resource for any chemist, but especially for graduate students.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for the "Synthetic" Chemist
This is an indispensible resource for any synthetic chemist, either organic or inorganic (not sure about the biochemical section). This book has concise, informative entries on the purification of a vast number of common solvents and reagents. I don't know how any chemist can survive without having this on his/her bookshelf!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for the Organic Chemist
Like Carey & Sundberg, Jerry March, the Aldrich catalog, and the Merck Index, (etc.), this book should be a benchmate for the Organic Chemist. It is very good when one requires the purification of reagents, or the drying/purification of solvents. The protocols for purification are usually pretreatment followed by distillation or recrystallization, and can be carried out to give anywhere from moderately pure material, to giving the pure, pure substance.

Excellent for the research organic chemistry graduate student or the pharmaceutical industrial research chemist who likes to start with the purest materials, so as to leave only the investigative variables open to question.

However, in industry, although FedEx-ing new and pure reagents (and disposal of the old questionable ones!) is the easiest and encouraged method for research, it is often found that purification is totally appropriate--in these instances, Purification of Laboratory Chemicals (D.D. Perrin & W.L.F. Armarego) is highly recommended. ... Read more

Book Description

The interaction of electromagnetic waves with matter in the frequency range between 10-6 and 1012 Hz is the domain of broadband dielectric spectroscopy. In this extraordinarily extended dynamic range molecular and collective dipolar fluctuations, charge transport and polarisation effects at inner and outer boundaries take place and determine the dielectric properties of the material being studied. Hence, broadband dielectric spectroscopy enables one to gain a wealth of information on the dynamics of bound (dipoles) and mobile charge carriers depending on the details of a molecular system. It is the intention of this book to be both an introductory course to broadband dielectric spectroscopy as well as a monograph describing recent dielectric contributions to current topics. In this respect the book will correspond to the needs of graduate students but also to specialized researchers, molecular physicists, polymer scientists and materials scientists in academia and in industry. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A really scientific approach to the engine practice
This book is my Bible. It does not explain you how to add 2HP to the engine, it explains how all that works and why, with theory, numbers and serious real world tests.
You may be interested in the theory: you'll find all you need to understand more detailled research papers.
You don't need theory: you may simply trust very comprehensive and clear conclusions which explain with figures and numbers how thinks work.
The book covers Spark Ignited and Diesel engines, indirect and direct injected.
The book does not cover recent works on high speed SI (like Honda VTEC) and turbo-diesel engines, as well the indirect injected stratified combustion engines.

5-0 out of 5 stars the Bible for engine related study and research

5-0 out of 5 stars Best thing since sliced bread!Well...for Chemical Engineers'
I am a Junior/Senior in Chemical Engineering, and I can't say enough about this set I recently purchased. My husband is a Graduate student in Chemical Engineering and he told me to hold off, that he never used his copy (1991 version), and never needed it in college. I use the electronic book all the time on my laptop. It's a great resource, and so EASY to use. I even caught my husband using my Perry's on more than one occasion, and he finally admitted my version was much better and easier to use than his! He went out and bought his OWN copy! I pretty much only use the electronic book, but it's nice to know if my laptop crashed, I have a hardcopy to go to. With the active 8, you can get the variables from a z-Compressibility Chart without having to take out the magnifying lens and ruler. Just slide your mouse and a red bordered legend tells you the Tr Pr and z simultaneously until you reach your desired measurements. Printing is a cinch, and it looks like the hardcopy except on 1 page! As I said, I use this book about every day, and I am sure this is what I'll bring to the office when I'm done with school. This would have been sweet during my Material/Energy Balance class as a sophomore, too. If you're a student you already spend $500+ on textbooks a term anyway, you might as well buy a book that has the information of every book you will buy in college in one resource for a little extra money, I put my name on it. You won't regret it if you're serious about your major.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great
A great book for anyone that works in the industry in a supporting role. The book clearly explains the aspects of what it takes to find, develop, produce oil and gas.

5-0 out of 5 stars from CHOICE reviews
"Conaway, a consultant, offers a very useful resource for the many people who are affected by some aspect of the petroleum industry and need information to vote, legislate, regulate, or simply understand this complicated and very significant business. The author is not only highly qualified but has the rare gift of being able to articulate complex processes in clear, simple English without being condescending. Topics from anticlines to workover units are illustrated and put into real-world context. Conaway is careful to use the actual working terminology of the oil field but includes explanations of odd terms like "fish" and "buff and puff." The coverage is encyclopedic, discussing everything from the structure of the Earth through all aspects of finding, recovering, transporting, refining, and marketing the product. The clear writing, plus numerous well-drawn illustrations, make this book a pleasure to read. Glossary. All levels." -- J. C. Comer, Northern Illinois University

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
In contrast with what my fellow Ann Arbor reviewer (and most likely UM ChE student), I tended to think that Fogler's book was an excellent way by which to learn the principles of Chemical Reaction Engineering. The book is well organized and while the chapters may skip some, the principle chapters (1-6 in the sixth printing) are the recommended starting chapters. Once passing through chapters 1 - 6, the topics do deviate some, but the fundamental principles necessary to understand any of the topics in chapters 7 and beyond are well established prior to engaging the later material. While my colleague from Ann Arbor may be correct in noting that there are several different printings of the third edition text, Fogler provides adequate typo errors on the text website. In terms of POLYMATH, Fogler does rely on this computer software to show many of the examples in his book. For a good bulk of the examples and homework problems, however, the operation of POLYMATH is extremely easy. If one knows how to type equations into a table and press a 'calculate' button, one can easily run POLYMATH. Fogler provides the program on the CD that accompanies the text. It makes solving differential equations (and their solution curves) much easier than doing so by hand.

I must say that this is the best Chemical Engineering textbook I've had as a student (Geankopolis was a close second). Fogler establishes the principles of CRE well, and the language of the text is not above and beyond reading comprehension. The style Fogler uses is very algorithmic, which, after utilizing the algorithm over and over again, makes reactor design problems much easier to deal with.

Having been one of Fogler's students, I will agree that he tries very hard to relate to students. He is the only professor I've had that tries to learn each student's name. While there might be a few interesting (cheesy) examples and illustrations in the book, they do at times provide some comical relief from the rigors of Chemical Reaction Engineering. Not to mention, the additional material (Interactive Computer Modules, Real World Examples, Chaper Notes, Self Tests) that Fogler provides on the text CD an website are available to further enrich the mind of a struggling learner.

This book, at least from a student's perspective, is wonderful!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Labor of Love
Scott Fogler's Elements of Chemical Reaction Engineering is more than just a text, it is a complete and engaging course. He combines the needed fundamental concepts of the most important topic in chemical engineering with modern, real world, problems to give the student (and instructor)a chance to solve relevant engineering problems. The text is written in a style that conveys to the reader that this guy knows what he is talking about and has recently solved industrial problems. I enjoy reading his examples because they are current problems and find myself solving the homework problems just for fun. For both students and professional engineers this is the most comprehensive and up-to-date text on the subject. To top it off Folger has developed a web site and CD-Rom to accompany the text with additional material and problems. I have redone my entire course on chemical reaction engineering using Folger's material - he has done it all! I can only imagine the work that must have gone into this. Thank you Professor Folger.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
Best book by far that I have had as undergrad. Highly recommended. We all love it at the University of Utah.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
This has been the best chemical engineering book in my undergraduate education, BY FAR. Not only does the book rpesent concepts that are easy to understand, but they are also reinforced continually with plenty of example problems from the accompanying CD. The CD also has a few modules and "games" to help out. All in all, from the standpoint of an undergraduate dealing with this course material, the book is excellent in helping students with different learning styles learn the material. I have no knowledge whether the depth of the subject is thorough enough for real world applications, but I suspect it is.

2-0 out of 5 stars Words of caution . . .
Make sure to order the most recent printing of the 3rd edition when ordering this book. There are currently 6 printings as of 4/23/03, and there are SUBSTANTIAL differences between the printings!!! (Different questions, rewritten chapters, updated examples, etc.)

Also, if you are not familiar with Polymath, you will not understand most of the examples in the book. Fogler relies very heavily on this program. While it is not a bad program, there are some quirks that make it difficult to use.

Fogler has an odd sense of humor, and has a number of cheesy references (if you didn't know that he taught at the University of Michigan, you will be well aware of it by the time you are done with this book!). He tries really hard to relate to students, but it comes off as being really corny.

PROS: Well-organized tables/flow charts to help with problem-solving.

CONS: Over-reliant on Polymath, confusing examples, chapters "skip" between topics ... Read more

Book Description

An advanced yet accessible treatment of the welding process and its underlying science.

Despite the critically important role welding plays in nearly every type of human endeavor, most books on this process either focus on basic technical issues and leave the science out, or vice versa. In Principles of Welding, industry expert and prolific technical speaker Robert W. Messler, Jr. takes an integrated approach--presenting a comprehensive, self-contained treatment of the welding process along with the underlying physics, chemistry, and metallurgy of weld formation.

Promising to become the standard text and reference in the field, this book provides an unprecedented broad coverage of the underlying physics and the mechanics of solidification--including peritectic and eutectic reactions--and emphasizes material continuity and bonding as a way to create a joint between materials of the same general class. The author supplements the book with hundreds of tables and illustrations, and correlates the science to welding practices in the real world.

Principles of Welding departs from existing books with its clear, unambiguous presentation, which is easily grasped even by undergraduate students, yet given at the advanced level required by experienced engineers.

4-0 out of 5 stars A comprehensive description in welding technology
This is another book from Messler, the writer of Joining of Advanced Material. It encompasses most of the welding metallurgy of metals, chemistry of the weld pool (which is very rare in other welding books), and physics of welding in detail. However, it doesn't go deep enough to the description about welding processes. Those who wish to read some details about wedling processes need to look for other books. ... Read more

Book Description

Francis Fukuyama famously predicted "the end of history" with the ascendancy of liberal democracy and global capitalism. The topic of his latest book is, therefore, surprising: the building of new nation-states. The end of history was never an automatic procedure, Fukuyama argues, and the well-governed polity was always its necessary precondition. "Weak or failed states are the source of many of the world’s most serious problems," he believes. He traces what we know—and more often don’t know—about how to transfer functioning public institutions to developing countries in ways that will leave something of permanent benefit to the citizens of the countries concerned. These are important lessons, especially as the United States wrestles with its responsibilities in Afghanistan, Iraq, and beyond.

Fukuyama begins State-Building with an account of the broad importance of "stateness." He rejects the notion that there can be a science of public administration, and discusses the causes of contemporary state weakness. He ends the book with a discussion of the consequences of weak states for international order, and the grounds on which the international community may legitimately intervene to prop them up. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars "It's Back," And This Time It Means Business
Francis Fukuyama provides in this slender volume a solid diagnosis of one of the most daunting obstacles impeding global security today. Specifically, Fukuyama's central argument is that the creation of new government institutions and the strenghtening of existing ones are the most important tasks we face at this point in history. Policy-makers have an impressive record when it comes to the dismantling, largely through the privatization of functions, of modern states; the ability to build sustainable political institutions is another matter. Developing countries -- at least the "majority" of them according to Mr. Fukuyama -- simply don't demand institutional reform. When reform has been imposed upon them, usually as a condition for the receipt of multi-lateral loans, the donor countries lack the patience to foster the requisite indigenous skills. The bulk of Mr. Fukuyama's text is an analysis of the distinc nature of, and unique problems posed by political insitutions in general -- that is, the ambiguity of goals, insufficient performance measures and, most significantly, the problem of delegating discretion.
The upshot of this analysis is that there is no "one-size-fits-all" organizational template that, as a drug to a disease, can be confidently applied across the board to bolster weak states. Globalization compounds the problem to the extent that its tendency is to erode the autonomy of the sovereign state. Similarly, the modern premise that governing legitimacy is exclusively derived from the consent of the governed through democratic processes (where is old-fashioned colonialism when you need it), runs the risk of raising expectations in developing countries that may very well be unrealistic, at least in the short-term. As Mr. Fukuyama notes, this is an area that will require significant research in the future. Nation-state building is not a new challenge, but is has never presented itself with the level of urgency we witness today. And, finally, that "end of history" notion. Read this book and you'll discover that not everybody is having the "end of history" experience.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Next Global Challenge: Strengthening States
For many Americans, including almost all libertarians, state power is something to be diminished. While there is usually some acknowledgement that the state is necessary for the national defense and for administering the rule of law, many Americans do not willingly concede that the regulation of certain aspects of the economy -- to give one example -- is a legitimate use of state power. In the early 1990s, this American ideology naturally became a part of the ideology of the international institutions in which the U.S. played a major role. Developing countries which came to these international institutions for help were usually told, and sometimes even required, to reduce the scope and power of their states.

In this short volume, Fukuyama shows how inappropriate - and even disastrous -- this American ideology is when applied indiscriminately in developing countries around the world. Claiming it is no longer supported by most academic empirical research, he provides a rough and tentative alternative to the idea of the shrinking state by demonstrating where states must be strong and where it is okay for them to scale down. Finally, he shows how such various global problems such as fighting terrorism and AIDS, the nonproliferation of WMD, and encouraging the spread of democracy, depend upon strong, not weak states, and that the U.S. and Europe must both come to terms (in their own ways) with this new international approach.

Fukuyama claims that what is needed is a paradigm shift. For much of the last half-century, the trend has been to weaken the state. Now, the evidence suggests that a new approach is needed, one that goes beyond simply shrinking or enlarging the state, and begins to deal with making the state more effective based on local conditions. While some basic outcomes (a democratic, capitalist state, for example) are to be expected, the way each nation gets there will be different. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Reference guide for joining of plastics
Joining of Plastics authored by Jordan Rotheiser and published by Hanser Gardner Publications, is an outstanding handbook covering everything from Adhesive joining to Welding of plastic components. (Note that there are no joining techniques starting with letter Z!) The author draws upon more than thirty-five years of plastics product design experience to present this encyclopedic coverage of joining techniques most commonly used in the plastics industry. This book not only offers a detailed guide to a novice reader in easy-to-read format, but also a complete reference manual for the experienced designer who occasionally encounters a new or unusual problem.

The author's unique approach to presenting the information is very refreshing and it fulfills its stated purpose of providing a handy desk reference and a design guide. Case in point, chapter one covers rapid guidelines for joining of plastic and efficient use of the handbook. This gives reader a quick overview of all available assembly methods in terms of description of the method, advantages, limitations, applications, and processing considerations. The general guidelines provide the direction for further reference and in-depth exploration of the particular subject. The importance of properly designing the parts to avoid assembly problems, improve efficiency, and reduce assembly time cannot be over emphasized. The chapter on designing for efficient assembly deals with this subject and provides the guidelines for the proper design along with an invaluable product design for assembly check list. A separate chapter for designing parts for disassembly and recycling covers increasing problem of solid waste management and makes important recommendations.

The relationship between the assembly methods, the Materials, and the plastics manufacturing processes is generally neglected in the available references. This book, in two separate chapters Assembly method selection by material and Assembly method selection by process, addresses this important but often overlooked relationship. Some of the individual topics discussed in detail are, adhesive and solvent joining, fasteners and inserts, hinges, variety of welding techniques including hot plate welding, gas welding, and induction/electromagnetic welding. Also, there are separate chapters on press fit, snap fits, spin welding, stacking, and cold forming. One of the most useful features of this book is the discussion of the advantages and disadvantages of each assembly method, making the selection process fast and easy. For example, the author succinctly points out that if high levels of molded-in stresses are a huge concern, one may want to avoid insert molding altogether. Chapter 13 on Insert and multi part molding discusses one of the fastest growing injection molding techniques to reduce assembly cost and components, often referred to as multi-component molding. Over forty pages have been devoted to the detailed discussion of Ultrasonic welding, a very popular and widely accepted joining methods.

In order to increase the versatility of the book and meet the goal of providing a ready reference and "how to" on the subject, numerous illustrations, charts, and tables have been depicted through out the book, names, addresses, and phone numbers of suppliers and equipment manufacturers are given along with adequate reference section. In the humble opinion of the reviewer, the readers would benefit even more, if additional actual photographs showing applications, equipment, and case studies were included. Whenever possible, inclusion of the supplier's website and e-mail address, should prove very valuable. Perhaps, the author would accept the suggestions for the future revision.

In the end, this handbook is the original work and no tired revision of an old text. The author has worked very hard to put into one volume much data that some of us have collected from various sources over a period of years and so often is buried in the files. Joining of Plastics is a very useful addition to any plastics engineer's library; however, it is a must for all plastic part designers. ... Read more

Book Description

Picking up where the success of the previous editions left off, this book is an accumulation of design procedures, methods, techniques, formulations, and data for use in the design of pressure vessels, their respective parts and equipment. It's written specifically for designers and engineers involved in designing and specifying or manufacturing of pressure vessels. The book also has broader applications to chemical, civil and petroleum engineers who construct, install or operate process facilities, and would be a valuable aid to those who inspect the manufacturing of pressure vessels or review designs.

The format of this book continues to differ from most technical ones, as there are many handy visual aids throughout the text. It is not just a reference book, but a practical guideline, that aids designers and engineers to solve practically every design problem that an engineer might encounter with pressure vessels. As an easy-to-use reference, the book provides the user with a logical step by step approach to the design of ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers) Code vessels, such as the method for determining the Minimum Design Metal Temperature (an ASME requirement for all pressure vessels).

* Covers a collection of design and analysis methods, all presented with the use of visual aides.
* New edition includes 26 new procedures, giving the engineer 83 different procedures to use as tools in solving design issues.
* Works not just a reference tool, but a practical guideline for every design problem.

1-0 out of 5 stars Avoid unless you have significant design experiance!
Although this book has "illustrated procedures for solving major pressure vessel design problems" it is full of errors and typos. Although the second edition has clarified many of the problems in the first edition, the procedures are unclear and significantly flawed. In addition, there are several instances where Mr. Moss fails to define the conditions in which certain equations should be, and should not be used. Unless you have significant experience in designing pressure vessels, avoid this book, it will only cause frustration and poorly designed units.
