After groveling and scraping for every little tungsten factoid I could find, this book was more welcome than a healed disciple at an evangelical fund raiser. What EXACTLY is ferrotungsten? Got it (including some typical chemistries). Lightbulb filaments? Finally a full story. >>Basically one heck of a lot of info on my favorite element.<< Omissions? Tungsten in fluorescent lamps is barely mentioned. Radiation shielding details not found. Direct carburizing recipies mentioned but details left to REFERENCES. Cooper moves from one subject to another in a manner that may annoy some. However, this is NOT a "teeny-bomber" book. If you have an interest in Thermochemistry and are familiar with some of the European methods of modeling, you may enjoy some of the more unique areas Cooper explores. The author leads you to this point by utilizing basic Thermodynamic concepts and this is why some readers may get bored. Although he does provide background if you actually read the text and don't skip about.

On the other hand; his models of Estimating Properties of Explosives (& Detonation Properties)is professional and a quick read. If you are familiar with the European presentations of the Rankine-Hugoniot Jump Equations this book will not appear Greek to you (pardon the pun). On a level most basic to the novice, Cooper's piece on Initiation & Initiators (detonators, etc) is well done, and easy for the novice to grasp. The book moves more toward explosive use in indusry and models, less so in terms of organic chemistry but there is enough nomenclature, basic structural formulas, history, and detonation theory to keep you reading as well as leading you forward to areas wherein you may not have a background. Undergraduate level stuff but quite useful for both the classroom as well as to explain world standards to those with a more focused background in explosive utility in a simple military context. This book attempts to be wide reaching and is useful for such a huge undertaking.

This book is about 460 pages and contains fives sections. He starts with the chemistry of explosives. The next section is on thermodynamics properties followed by a section on shock waves. The last two sections are on detonation and initiation. I was particularly interested in shock waves. I found the book inadequate in every possible sense. The notation is an absolute disaster. There is no saying what represents what and sometimes the same symbol has been used to represent several different quantities in the same place. One must try very hard to figure out what is actually meant. The mathematical treatment of shock waves is primitive and almost non-existent. I got the impression that the author does not have a good grasp of the subject. The book resembles an internal report or a collection of white papers as it is customary in some companies nowadays. The book needs a lot of editing, as some sentences are incomprehensible. Here is an example sentense form page 208 : "First we will look at the P-x diagram, a few diagrams in time of the shock presure and the interface, Figure 18.5. " If you know nothing about the subject, then this maybe a place to start because the book is very basic. Just be sure you are not confused by the inconsistent notation. If you are interested to learn about the shock waves and their interaction, I recommend "Physics of Shock Waves and High Temperature Hydrodynamic Phenomena" by Zel'dovich and Raizer.

Paul Cooper has done an outstanding job of detailing the diverse world of explosives engineering. Included is sufficient detail to get a researcher new to a topic started and enough background to help an 'old timer' teach. The last five chapters on Engineering Applications is an unequalled summary of the use and analysis of the practice of explosives engineering. This is a systematic and well organized introduction. I used it with managers and students not just engineers. What was important was not just to follow an algorithmic approach but to imbue a way of thinking. It simplyis not true that everyone has formed the discipline to use their mindfollowing these or similar heuristics. We may stumble on them naturally, Iagree. But for many people this is a useful revelation. In addition to thebook, they have produced software to engage you in learning the problemstrategies.Compared to many other books on the subject, this book hasenough real world examples and strategies that it is not just poppsychology or wishful thinking or one more brainstrom with web-likediagrams.

I read about half of this book before setting it down in disgust.The book is targeted to working engineers that are confronted with unique challenges on regular occasion.As such, I would have expected the authorsto know a bit more about real word problem solving.

The authors basicallypostulate that any person, of any ability can solve any problem if theyemploy a problem solving heuristic.While a nice idea, and certainlypolitically correct, this is simply not the case.A good (adequate)engineer looks at a failed design or unique problem and without sittingdown in a group brainstorming session or plotting his creative solutionprocess on paper, she mentally decides what is important and then asks thenecessary questions, performs the necessary calcs, researches theappropriate topics, etc..I've never seen a talented engineer plot hisproblem solving approach on paper when confronted with a problem.Thoseengineers that actually employed a heuristic never solved the problemspresented to them and ultimately lost their jobs. Period.Exercises (like those that the authors suggest) to increase yourcapacity for creativity are foolish, unnecessary and ineffective.(If youdon't believe me, check out the book.You'll get a good laugh.)

Theauthors are clearly young academics that have no real information to offerthe public in this book.While I believe that they meant well, I trulybelieve that neither of them has actually ever solved a real problem andthey are therefor not qualified to sell a book on this topic.The accurateinformation that they do present is obvious to the most average of highschool students. Consequently, this material can hardly be used in anargument to redeem this book's worth.

One good thing about the book:Theauthors include quite a few real-world examples and case histories that areboth entertaining and insightful.The authors should have published acollection of these stories and omitted their useless dribble.(About 60%of the examples are useful.The remaining examples are over-simplifiedwith significant details omitted.The authors regularly neglect importantfactors including: economic factors, regulatory body concerns, availabilityof resources, and others when they cast blame on the problem solver.Thisfurther indicates that the authors read a lot, but don't actually have anybreadth of experience to draw upon)(If, indeed, the authors do have realproblem solving experience; then I wonder how effective they were inindustry.The way they tackled the problem of writing a book, I wouldn'thire either of them to sharpen my pencils.)

One last point to countertheir foolishness:As dangerous as it is to make assumptions when aproblem statement is sufficiently vague; it is the in-effective (andunemployed) engineer that doesn't draw upon his experiences to form areasonable set of assumptions.The engineer that does otherwise takesthree months to fold a drawing.I'd really like to see the author(s) workin the field; I need a good laugh. ... I was not able to fit polymer chem into my schedule at University, so I bought this book after graduating. This book is extremely organized and provides a lot of examples. The first of three sections provides a great introduction with the focus on definitions and structure. This is accomplished with very little reference to reactions.
The next two sections, which are titled vinyl and nonvinyl polymers respectively, address reaction mechanisms and kinetics. This layout allowed for smooth transitions between sections and concepts were introduced and reinforced smoothly.
The other thing I liked about it, is the continuous reinforcement of nomenclature...every time a name was used a corresponding structure was on that same page.

This textbook does an excellent job of going over the basics of polmer chemistry. There are insightful questions at the end of chapters that make students think and the book goes over the material in such a way that a background in organic chemistry is not necessary. If you need to learn about polymer chemistry on your own, this book is an excellent purchase.

"Polymer Chemistry: An Introduction" is an excellent text for an upper division undergraduate or graduate level course in polymer chemistry. The book is also enjoyable to read for scientists and engineers in the polymer and materials fields. The content is logically organized, there is fairly in-depth discussion of mechanisms of polymerization reactions and of the origins of stereoregularity in polymers, and the problems at the end of each chapter are more than adequate for reviewing the subject matter. Professor Stevens clearly introduces the reader to the subject of polymer chemistry, relating the physical properties of macromolecular materials to polymer orientation, microstructure, stereochemistry and chemical composition. He also provides an enormous amount of information on the history of polymers in a fashion that effectively reinforces the important concepts being described. I am currently using this book to review for the PE exam. The main chapter material is wonderful and very straight forward. I wish I had this book when I was in school. Several reference tables and figures are great for making quick work of routine problems and problems a young engineer like myself normally solves with a computer. The main downside is the end of chapter problems. If you're reviewing for the PE, you MUST buy the solutions manual to make the questions worth while. Some of the problems aren't stated clearly and you'll need the manual to clarify what is being asked for. It is common for problems to use ambigous units such as psi (instead of psia or psig) and unit in terms of other variables (per cubic foot of bed, or per pound formula weight). When you do get the solutions manual, the problems are solved without units. This is difficult on problems with mixed english/SI units (but a good review). Dispite the difficulty with the problems, this is the best of the review manual in my opinion and I wouldn't want to go into the exam without it.

I found this book to be extremely helpful both in preparation for and in taking the Chemical Engineering PE examination. While the practice problems are a good review, I thought they tended be more difficult than the actual test. Additionally, the book covers all the high points that are on the exam. The layout is excellent and with a little familiarity (and some page tabs) I was able to find every reference I needed in very little time during the test.

I wrote this book soley as a study guide for preparing for the professional engineerng exam in chemical engineering. When I teach the course for this subject, I tell my students that the only way to learn how to prepare for the exam is to do the problems. This book is not intended to be the "single sourcebook" for the exam. Instead, as you do the problems, you will determine what other standard books YOU will need. I am aware that Engineering Economics is now not part of the PE exam, but I keep it in the book because there still have been questions on the exam that have some aspects of econcomics in them. I rate this 5 stars not only because I wrote it but I have seen how it gives confidence to those preparng for the exam in my classes. I have all but finished the next edition-expanding to 42 chapters from 19- but its publication is still in doubt with the same publisher at this time. The few remaining chapters will be finished after completing my PhD in 1999. We'll see what happens then.

This is not a good book to learn chemical engineering from, nor is it particularly good as a review of engineering for the practicing engineer. If you are planning to take the Professional Engineering examination in chemical engineering and you have good chemical engineering books from your college days, I would encourage you to use the old books to review the fundamentals.

Where this book comes in useful is in the many problems it gives at the end of each chapter. I found working these problems to be the best preparation for the exam. This text is a concise, well-written, introductory text regarding mass, mole, and energy balances. Though the book does lack a little as far as its discourse on thermodynamics. There are a few typos, but that should not distract the reader from learning chemical engineering principles. Also, this book is a wonderful resource because of its extensive thermophysical properties tables and other important data. I have used these tables in fluids, kinetics, and heat/mass transfer.

I used this book in my 2nd year at U of Cincinnati for my Material and Energy Balance class. This is a very good book for ChemE's just starting out, and it helped me a lot(I'm currently 4th year). The example problems in the book are very good at explaining concepts, and the book is very well laid out in an easy to understand way. If you don't need this book for a class, it is still a very handy reference for many ChemE applications.

2-0 out of 5 stars NOT VERY SELF-EXPLANATORY FOR THE UNDERGRADUATE
Elementary Principles of Chemical Processes was the textbook I used in my very first engineering class many years ago. I was then a Chemical Engineering major, because I wanted an intellectual challenge; my course of study was then, and presumably still is, regarded as the toughest of all the academic fields in my school. With this work of Felder and Rousseau as the textbook that introduced so many of us into the world of chemical engineering, the reputation of the difficulty of this major was well deserved.

I graduated with a B.S. in Chemical Engineering, and instead of exploring the world of engineering well beyond my college years, I decided to pursue a different route by becoming a mathematics instructor. I also have a Master's in the field of Mathematics Education, and my added exposure to this realm has served me quite well.

Though I have left the world of chemical engineering well behind me, I just thought that I might reflect upon a portion of my past and chip in my few paragraphs pertaining to this reference.Over the course of time, being an educator has taught me that in order to get students to understand the content of the material, you have to communicate and express the ideas quite clearly. This textbook is not exactly successful in that department.

For instance, the sections referring to unit conversions were presented rather haphazardly. My knowledge of unit conversions has expanded considerably since my undergraduate days, but back then, I did not really know how to follow what the authors were trying to express. For instance, the approach to converting the unit ratio centimeters per square second to kilometers per square year is a procedure that should be well laid out in several steps. Instead, in this book, you have this type of unit conversion expressed in one line, and as opposed to having the steps displayed in an orderly manner, all that you really get is a shortcut full of exponential gibberish.

Looking back at it now, I think that unless one comes from a background that demands mathematical rigor, I honestly do not see how anyone who uses this textbook can really obtain the insight needed to progress to intermediate engineering courses and graduate.

All in all, this is not a good textbook for the full-time college student who has other topics to deal with. For me, too much time was wasted trying to translate this material into a context that would be readable for the engineering novice. There was too much material crammed into each chapter, and the pain of trying to find a clue to get from one level of mastery to the next could only be magnified by the pedantry often expressed by the impatient professor. ...
