Odian offers a comprehensive guide to polymer chemistry, covering nearly all the types of polymerization, exploring radical, ionic, step, and copolymerization mechanisms and kinetics in sufficient detail. Some recent advances in polymer synthesis are not covered, but book offers enough knowledge to have a good grasp of all aspects of polymerizations. A must read for anyone considering a career or education in polymer synthesis!

I took a course last year in Polymer Chemistry and this text was the standard text book. It was an amazingly great reference book. This book mainly target on Polymerization synthesis and characterization. If you are interested in the mechanical properties of polymer, you should look for other one. But this is a must for all polymer chemists and material scientists who are interested in polymer processing.

I have been using this book for several years, including a term where it was the primary text for a graduate-level Introduction to Polymers course. As textbooks go, I have found this one relatively easy to read, and the concepts easy to follow. It it quite comprehensive, but assumes an undergraduate background in organic and physical chemistry. Since the course, it has been a handy reference in my research, though, as someone else noted, it is lacking in respect to living polymerizations, particularly Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization. However, Odian's work remains one of the most useful textbooks from my graduate classes.

The number of concepts covered in this book is amazing -- I learn something new with each reading. The book is also great for pointing you to the leading references in the field; although it is lacking decent coverage of living polymerization. Odian's book is not easy to read. For a chemistry book it includes relatively few chemical structures or mechanisms, so for students who don't already know chemistry it is a rather useless introduction A better introductory polymer chemistry book is by M. Stevens.

This is not AMPSB (another maintenace planning and scheduling book), when you read this book you can actually feel that you are in the real working world.Doc does not talk concepts he tells what happens in real Maintenance World and how to go to World Class Maintenance World using 6 principals of planning and scheduling.I will stick to this book as a reference in the process of continouse improvent.I will also recommend this book to Project Managers to see whats the real concept behind planning and scheduling not just a traditional name as done in most Project Management books. I you want to know why must you plan and schedule buy this book.Good job Doc. I the was a 10 star I would have given it a 10star, this is a unique book I have ever read.

Doc Palmer has provided a great tool for all Maintenance Program Designers and others to use. Mr. Palmer has provided good details and examples in the book while also making it as enjoyable to read as it is informative. I highly recommend this book to all who are step one and beyond in Maintenance Management and Development. One of the hardest espects of starting a new maintenance program for a company is often getting management to except the required changes. The Maintenance Planning and Scheduling Handbook helps by often having a ready example or referance to provide a second means to demonstrate to the client the how, why and effect on his bottom line. This reason alone is worth the cost of this book and then some.
Doc Palmer also drives home the truth about CMMS; when to invest and when to wait. This for me is very important for my specialty is designing Preventative Maintenance Operational Programs for the client. Once I have done so the client can invest in the exact CMM software they require. Unfortunatly all too often clients approach this backwards; they buy the program first and then hope someone like myself can make their operation work with the CMM. They end up spending thousands and a lot of their valued time for little reward at the end. If your company is in this position or about to be read this book before you do anything else.

Hand-on experience is crucial for performing successfull maintenance. It can be only your personal experience or, if you are dedicated to continual learning, you can "borrow" some of hard-to-gain experience from top-class professionals.
Every sentence in this book is illustrated with very concrete examples from real life, and that makes it invaluable. Author has comprehensive knowledge of all aspects of maintenance, and that is visible on any page of this book, so although it is thematically concentrated on planning and scheduling, it can be used by anyone involved in structure of companies' maintenance organisation.
From explaning overall corporate strategy regarding maintenance to decribing every particular day-to-day task of maintenance planner and scheduler, this book guides you through the whole process, in which planning and scheduling are vital subprocesses to bring anything else to life.
Although the book is oriented to explain manual documentation system, you can easily bring described principles in very extensive use of CMMS practice. You can only benefit from broader view that can only tear you off "computer-will-solve-everything" dreams.

This book provides details not found in others I have read. There is a great section on Wrench Time. I have presented 4 Stars only because I feel that this is not necessarily a book for beginners. A good basic knowledge is needed to interrupt processes and terminology difference between your facility and the book text. The examples presented in the book are designed as for a manual application so you must be able to mentally translate them into the application of your CMMS.

I highly recommend this book, more over, reguardless of current Planning/Scheduling level every Planner and Maintenance Professional should have a copy for quick review. It is our company's point of reference for providing knowledge as we build towards World-Class Planning/Scheduling.

...I was not impressed with the content of this book because of mistakes made in the data it reported ie. that polymers can't form crystalline structures. I also found that the equations presented in the text did not have detailed information and at times the explaination of how to use the equations were slight.
I was also disappointed in the fact that I had to buy a xerox copy from the book store on campus (my financal aid would not pay for a book purchased anywhere else) because the publisher stopped print production before the class started which left myself and several other students "hanging" with only the option of purchasing a cheap copy for nearly the price of the original. Now I am left with an expensive book that I can't even you as reference material for future courses nor can I sell it because it is a copy and lastly because it is no longer in print.

This is a well written book with something for just about everyone. There are parts geared directly to engineers, but issues like foreign body response are dealt with rigorously enough for the best bio geek. All classes of implantable devices are covered with a healthy dose of history to boot!

This book was recommended to me to help me in my research, and has turned out to be one of the best recommendations I have ever received. This is a great book; by far the best I have come across on the topic of computing the properties of condensed phase materials by quantum mechanical simulations. Here are the reasons why.

1. The chapters are well laid out and one chapter flows neatly to the next.

2. The math is kept to a minimum; the author makes a point of communicating important principles and ideas in concise sentences without resorting to derivations. This is ideal for engineers like me; who by training do not know that much math as compared to physicists who specialize in the solid state.

3. Important ideas are clarified up front. Many texts will lead the reader through long and windy paths of proofs and logic before arriving at the conclusion; thereby losing their reader in the process. Not here; important points are stated clearly at the beginning and at the end of each section.

4. Compare, contrast, and context. There are many ideas, models, approximations, and theorems that have been developed in the past century related to electronic structure. Many of these are closely related to each other in their inspiration, derivation, practice, and/or applications. This book makes the connections between the different concepts. For a non-expert reading through the electronic structure literature, terms like APW, OPW, PAW, LAPW, LMTO, etc... can be quite confusing if not placed within an overriding context. This book provides that context.

5. Good use of appendices. Electronic structure is a lot like politics; most practicioners in either field did not receive formal educations in the subject, but instead got into it under the apprenticeship of other people. This is reflected by a lot of literature by those who succeeded in the field; most of it good in showing of the authors' achievements, but generally useless in preparing the next generation of practicioners. For electronic structure, this is manifested by the many books that require prior knowledge of quantum, thermo, crystallography, mat sci, etc.. In effect, these books were written by experts to be read by other experts. Not this book. Basic ideas are kept in the text; and specific proofs and derivations are kept in the appendices. The result is a text that is much easier to read than most others.

6. The book is concept driven; not application driven. Most texts in materials simulations are actually a compilation of chapters written independently by multiple authors. Each chapter might be given a general title; but the text will be bias towards the research of its authors. For example, a chapter on surface calculations might focus entirely on adsorption, or relaxation/reconstruction, or optical properties; but surely not touching all these subjects. This book does not do this; each chapter is driven by basic concepts, and one concept leads to the next.

In all, this is a great textbook and a handy reference book. I highly recommend it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Insightful Postulational Approach to Thermodynamics
Why did I buy an older thermodynamics text, one first published in 1960? I trust the advice of other Amazon reviewers.

They say: 1) The best treatment of classical thermodynamics that I have seen. The chapters on phase transitions are excellent and the mechanical model used to illustrate critical phenomena is brilliant. 2) It is far better than most books on the subject. 3) I think this book has no competition as a text in thermodynamics. It is the ideal preparation for a book like Landau's Statistical Physics. 4) The overview of the fundamentals of thermodynamics is without rival. 5) I think this book is a great option if you feel disappointed with the standard treatment of thermodynamics, which to me is quite boring and clumsy.

A few reviewers argued that Callen's text was less suitable for engineering students (too few heat-mechanical energy conversion problems) and chemical engineers (too few chemical mixture problems).

I agree with the majority. Thermodynamics, an Introduction to the Physical Theories of Equilibrium Thermostatics and Irreversible Thermodynamics, is an exceptional text. I give it five stars.

H. B. Callen offers a fascinating and insightful postulational approach to thermodynamics rather than the conventional inductive approach. He targets first year graduate students and advanced undergraduates; however, even readers proficient with advanced thermodynamics should find Callen's approach stimulating.

The text has three primary sections: General Principles of Classical Thermodynamics (200 pages), Representative Applications (65 pages), and Fluctuations and Irreversible Thermodynamics (50 pages). An extensive appendix, some 50 pages, offers a useful review of pertinent mathematics and other relevant topics. Answers are not provided to the chapter problems.

Interspersed throughout are brief chapters that review useful mathematical techniques. I appreciated the discussions of the Euler equation, the Legendre transformations, the extremum principle in the Legendre transformed representations, and the Maxwell relations (not the Maxwell EM equations). Callen provides useful tools like a thermodynamic mnemonic diagram (first introduced by Max Born) and associated procedures for reducing the formal manipulation of partial derivates to "a simple recipe".

Callen's text has been widely used. I reviewed the 1960 first edition, eighteenth printing. A second edition published in 1984 is easier to find and is often used today as a supplementary text.

Best treatment of extensive, intensive variables, thermodynamic potentials thermodynamic stability. I relied on the first edition of this text, along with other texts, for years while teaching thermo and stat mech. However, I preferred Gibbs's original argument for proving the equivalence of energy minimun at constant entropy to entropy maximum at constant energy. The book's weakness is that a student can learn everything in it without being able to apply the subject in the laboratory (some of the exercises are good in this regard, though). The opposite can be said about Zemansky. Forget Reif, a hodgepodge of half-baked ideas unsystematically organized and presented.

The book gets five stars, but with the one caveat that this applies only to the first edition and not the second. Callen's book was the first to really push the axiomatic approach to classical thermodynamics, and the quality of the pedagogy on the subject prior to the emergence of the original version of this text in 1960 was, shall we say, "lacking." That said, actually spending money on the portion of this book devoted to statistical mechanics, when there are significantly clearer and cheaper presentations to be found (such as that by Chandler), is a little silly. The best thing about the introduction of new editions, however, is that they frequently drive down the price of the old - one can now easily find used, hardcover copies of the original version of this text for significantly less than half the cost of the new edition.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful treatment of classical thermodynamics
leaving aside the stat mech part, the book is just perfect. The presentation of the subject is not the traditional one (like, for example, Fermi's thermodynamics); it begins with the fundamental equation (Entropy versus the rest of the extensive variables) and all the postulates, and then goes on thru all thermodynamics. I found this approach much clearer, and more fun. From the first moment you are aware that with just one state equation (an equation between the intensive variables), you do not know the system completely. The thermodynamic potentials are introduced using in an explicit way the idea of the Legendre transform (but the math involved is very simple) and so the essence of the therm. potentials can be readily understood. I think this book is a great option if you feel disappointed with the standard treatment of thermodynamics, which to me is quite boring and clumsy.

The books overview of the fundementals of thermo is without rival. This book lays out the laws of thermo in a postulate form. From these postulates you can derive the entire theroy of classical thermo. This can be used to solve practical problems and derive thermodynamic relationships. It is a great refference.

This book takes you through the theory of thermo, but for a more practicle look at thermo see Smith and Van Ess Introduction to thermodymanics for chemical Engineers.

The first half of this book is perfect for the begining chemist or Chem Engineer. It is a great book for grad students also

I give this book five stars for the first half the second half is not all that great. Buy T. Hills Introduction to Statistical Mechanics for the thermostatistic part. It is from dover press and is cheap all Hills books are great and from dover. ... Read more

Michael Economides and Ron Oligney have taken the world of "big oil" and made all of its components easy to understand and an entertaining read for those with industry knowledge and for those without any oil industry background. From the history to the current politics to technical explanations for exploration and drilling technologies, the entire book brings all of the elements of oil together and logically tells the story of a business that the entire world is dependent upon for survival. A great read considering the current issues with oil prices.

With a one-two punch of factual data and anecdotal stories, Economides and Oligney peel open the somewhat dark and mysterious ways of petroleum in modern culture and commerce. It was particularly fascinating (and somewhat gratifying) to read how the oil industry's own political self-dealing for the first half of the twentieth-century (always with the more-than-willing assistance of supposedly populist politicians) nearly led to its own demise in the 1970s and 80s... And, the impact of those lessons in the so far relatively laissez faire 90s and 00s and into the next century.

I am somewhat baffled by the assertions of reviewer Stephen Mark, especially about the book's "extremely political" and "ungrammatical" nature. If anything, The Color of Oil exposes the foibles of politics and is an appeal to reason, which of course, is essentially (in the truest sense) apolitical. I have been dragging my feet to finish reading this book. It is not well-organized and full of opinions without solid arguments. Therefore, it is dry and hard to read. To the author's credit, a lot is covered in this thin book. If it had been expanded, the reader could have enjoyed it more.

Overall this is a decent book about the energy business, but could do with a little more fact and a lot less opinion. The attacks on the environmentalists and other critics of the oil industry are a distraction and add about zero value to ones overall understanding of the business.

The book is a mix of economical and technical aspects of chemical engineering design; so is good for graduates starting the career or for practicing engineer interested in economical aspects of plant design. For me the good companion book for these engineer is "Conceptual design of chemical processes" by J. Douglas or better but out-of-print "Applied Project Engineering and Management" by E. Ludwig.

The Fourth Edition is an advancement over the 2nd edition, the one I "grew up" with. Instead of jumping to cost preparation and option selection, then on to preliminary design, it starts out an excellent introduction, basic requirements for OSHA and EPA (including a good section on HAZOPs), a review of computer-aided design, then on to cost preparation and the rest. After option selection, the authors provide a good solid section on process optimization. This is a new area in the text and well worth reading. All in all, a current, concise design book, ideal for the student or the old hand.

I never had much use for this text while in school. As with most subjects Senior year, we went too fast to appreciate it. With the years, however, I had cause to appreciate Peters & Timmerhaus. It is packed full of rules-of-thumb for preparations of cost estimates and comparing options. Although it is not the best place to end an economic investigation, it is the best place to start one.

The study of capillarity is in the midst of a veritable explosion. Hence the temptation to write a new book, aiming at an audience of students. What is offered here is not a comprehensive review of the latest research but rather a compendium of principles. How does one turn a hydrophilic surface into one that is hydrophobic, and vice versa? We will describe a few solutions. Some rely on chemical treatments, such as coating a surface with a molecular layer. Others are based on physics, for instance by controlling the roughness of a surface. We will also examine the dynamics of wetting. Drops that spread spontaneously do so at a rate that slows down with time. They can be tricked into covering large areas by spreading them suddenly. We will describe a few of the many facets of their dynamical properties. Special additives are required for water to foam. Foams are desirable in a shampoo but can be a nightmare in a dishwasher detergent. Antifoam agents have been developed and are well known, but how do they work? It is also possible to generate bubbles and foams without special additives, for example in pure and viscous liquids such as glycerin, molten glass, and polymers. As we will see, the laws of draining and bursting then turn out to be quite different from the conventional ones. This book will enable the reader to understand in simple terms such questions that affect every day life -- questions that also come up during in industry. The aim is to view systems that often prove quite complex in a way that isolates a particular physical phenomenon, often avoiding descriptions requiring advanced numerical techniques will oftentimes in favor of qualitative arguments. It's one of the best technical books I have ever bought. It's very easy to read, gives very good advice and covers the whole subjet. I also like that the author does not try to sell any process simulator. I hate it when an author tries to sell products with his/her books. This one is very good, because you're helped regardless of the process simulator you prefer.
