5-0 out of 5 stars very helpfull book
This book is of great help to my work on a graduate project, where I'm trying to numerically evaluate pressure drop in a gas as result of its interaction with water jet. The FORTRAN code provided with the book (you will have to type it in, or request a copy of the source code from the authors) was exactly what I needed to make a progress in my calculations ( I had to modify it a bit to adjust for my problem). The book is clearly written and provides a good presentation of "key" topics in the study of gas-particle & gas-droplet flows. Finally, take a look at the Table of Contents - it usually gives the best idea wether you should or shouldn't buy the book. ... Read more

Book Description

This Second Edition of Elements of Petroleum Geology is completely updated and revised to reflect the vast changes in the field in the fifteen years since publication of the First Edition. This book is a usefulprimer for geophysicists, geologists, and petroleum engineers in the oil industry who wish to expand their knowledge beyond their specialized area. It is also an excellent introductory text for a university course in petroleum geoscience.
Elements of Petroleum Geology begins with an account of the physical and chemical properties of petroleum, reviewing methods of petroleum exploration and production. These methods include drilling, geophysical exploration techniques, wireline logging, and subsurface geological mapping. After describing the temperatures and pressures of the subsurface environment and the hydrodynamics of connate fluids, Selley examines the generation and migration of petroleum, reservoir rocks and trapping mechanisms, and the habit of petroleum in sedimentary basins. The book contains an account of the composition and formation of tar sands and oil shales, and concludes with a brief review of prospect risk analysis, reserve estimation, and other economic topics.

* Updates the First Edition completely
* Reviews the concepts and methodology of petroleum exploration and production
* Written by a preeminent petroleum geologist and sedimentologist with 30 years of petroleum exploration in remote corners of the world
* Contains information pertinent to geophysicists, geologists, and petroleum reservoir engineers

5-0 out of 5 stars From an OPEC country ...
Excellent book, easy to read for petroleum engineers yet quite insightful and nicely presented. A great deal of references are useful to direct further reading, this book became my preferred reference in petroleum geology. Highly recommendable.

Altamente recomendable.

5-0 out of 5 stars From the Titan of petroleum!
This second edition surveys the science of petroleum geology. It describes the generation, migration, and entrapment of oil and gas, and outlines the procedures used in their location, evaluation, and production. The topics, appropriate for the geology student (and cyber-cadet seeking abiogenic petroleum anywhere in the universe), include requisite basic material from the fields of petroleum engineering and geophysics. The eight colour plates are packed with useful information.

Selley's writing style is most welcome. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars An old Textbook for Polymer Chemistry
I have been acquainted with this book since 15 years ago.I have taught this book for 8 years in undergraduate courses . It is the only book in polymer chemistry which has nearly all the topics relating to polymer chemistry both for beginners and also for advanced level readers .Even though it is old it has many subjects all together that can not be found in another book .I think such topics as engineering subjects and kinetics and also molecular weight equations should be explained more to be more understandable to all and this is the main disadvantages of the book .

Book Description

Crucial information on nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons
From the diseased animal carcass hurled over the wall of a besieged castle to the nuclear suitcase bomb carried by a clandestine operative, the threat of unconventional weapons has always been a feature of warfare. Today's danger comes mainly from the potential use of nuclear, biological, and chemical (NBC) weapons of mass destruction (WMD) by international terrorists or rogue states. False alarms and misinformation about these weapons have abounded in the jittery post-9/11 atmosphere. To understand and deal with the actual threat posed requires basing response plans, policy, and reporting on actual facts.
Introduction to Weapons of Mass Destruction separates fact from fiction about NBC weaponry by providing clear, technically precise information. For each family of weapon, coverage in this handbook includes:
* History and background information
* Agent types and delivery mechanisms
* Effects of exposure
* Protection
* Safe storage and handling
* Decontamination
* Medical treatments
Drawing from a broad array of military, scientific, and safety resources, this text offers both accessibility to the general public and accuracy and depth for professional emergency responders. Additional resources include a bibliography of references and a list of addresses and telephone numbers of federal and military agencies and professional organizations of interest. With full coverage of WMDs, from high-tech, genetically modified organisms to rudimentary radiological "dirty bombs," Introduction to Weapons of Mass Destruction is an essential reference for understanding and responding to these dangerous warfare agents.

3-0 out of 5 stars Ok look at corrosion
This textbook was my senior level undergraduate text on corrosion. I would classify it as average. The writing is somewhat ambiguous in spots. This was reinforced as I read it a second time in preparation for PhD qualifying exams.

Problems with it:
1. Inconsistent notation. Many reaction potentials are subscripted as a anodic, but the Nernst equation immediately following is written for the cathodic form of the rxn.
2. The treatment of the Nernst equation is lacking in detail, particularly in regard to the choice of reference states. The notion of reaction affinity is not mentioned.
3. Mixed potential theory is introduced without a clear description/justification for writing all reactions in their cathodic form. I found this confusing on the first time through.
4. In the section on high temperature oxidation, a standard defect notation, like Kroger-Vink, is not used.
5. I found the descriptions of some of the methods for measuring overpotentials less than clear.

The author is apparently now deceased, so it is doubtful the book will be updated. If you are a teacher looking for a corrosion book, I would suggest looking elsewhere. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not a very useful book
This book tries to cover so many subjects that it covers none of them well. Most chapters are full of generalities rather than the details needed by a practicing engineer or student. The worst feature of the handbook isthe index, which contains so few entries that it is very difficult to findinformation on a topic or determine if the book even mentions it, whichoften it doesn't. Rather than buy this expensive handbook, I would suggestinvesting in standard references for the individual topics (e.g. wastewatertreatment, solids waste) in which you are interested. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Smith & Van Hess preferable!
This book is used as graduate text for GTech, ChBE course, and suffices in context of summarizing a large amount of material on fugacities in mixtures, empirical methods used for prediction and analysis of phase euilibria problems. With no previous exposure to Chemical Engineering Thermodynamics, I found Smith and Van Hess to be greatly helpful in explaining basic concepts, and providing a lucid, logical development of the subject. While Prausnitz dwells at length on the behavior of mixtures, the development of the subject leaves one wanting for a lot more, and hence this book will always need atleat one complementary text like Smith's book to be a useful text. The topics explained really well in the text include fugacities in gas and liquid mixtures, and calculation of solubilities of solids or gases in liquids. Other areas of thermodynamics are either ignored or coverage is sketchy (for examples treatment of polymers, electrolytes, use of statistical mechanics, etc).

5-0 out of 5 stars Clearly written , Very good book
The book explains clearly the subjects making easy to understand the topics. I would suggest chem. eng to use it as a tool for understanding any specific subject in phase equilibria. It points out clearly the principles. Any book written by Dr. Prausnitz has high quality.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good solution thermo, but don't get rid of Smith & Van Ness
This is the text that is used for graduate ChE thermo at Georgia Tech. I found many of the chapters to be very useful and complete. For example, the chapters on estimating fugacities and solubilities in gases and liquids were very well written. However, I found the treatment of some topics, such as equations of state and supercritical fluids to be somewhat superficial and not developed very well in general. Smith & Van Ness and The Properties of Gases and Liquids were useful supplements.

Book Description

In recent years, there has been an explosion of interest in the science of adhesion. Despite its multidisciplinary and undoubtedly industrial character, the wealth of phenomena to be found in the study of adhesion has drawn researchers from many seemingly disparate scientific disciplines. The intention of these books is to provide an updated view of the state of the art of adhesion science and to fill in the rather large gap in the compilation of knowledge related to adhesion science.

This set of two volumes describes adhesion science from three fundamental perspectives: mechanics, surfaces and chemistry. Volume 1 focuses attention on the contribution of mechanic principles and solutions to understanding the fabrication, design, analysis, and testing of adhesive bonds. It also offers a comprehensive overview of the current understanding of stresses, deformation, and fracture parameters associated with a range of adhesive bonds. Volume 2 dea ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Superb Book..... Well worth the time and Money
As a mechanical engineer with nearly 30 years of process equipment experience, I find this book invaluable for the design, specification and operation of storage facilities.

Meyers has a well organized, informative text with an easy to find index. The book is particularly useful where the pros and cons of design alternatives are compared. I have seen heated discussions resoved based on Meyer's recommendations.

As anyone who has delt with tank design over the past several years can tell you, design practices, recollections and anecdotes, combined with the occasional company guideline were the only references available. Now Meyers comes forth with an authoritative text that fills a long standing need.

Purchase this book along with the Aboveground Steel Storage Tank Handbook by Brian Digrado and you have (virtually) everything important that has been written about aboveground storage tanks.

1-0 out of 5 stars Poorly written college paper in form of cheap book
This is an old college technical paper, put together to look like a book.
It is very poorly written, but probably technically correct.
The book jumps around with no particular sequence or direction.
If you are not an electrochemical engineer in training who likes really bad diagrams ( bordering on hand written ) and REALLY TERRIBLE photographs ( which look like somebody's 3rd pass Xerox copies of twenty five year old black and white photos ) you will not like this book.
It may be of assistance to a engineering student, who may need some of the obscure tables and reeeeally bad graphs.
It looks like this guy printed this on a Commodore 64, in his basement,,,, him self,,,,, twenty years ago!!!!!!!
The technical knowledge is there, but the book is a REEEEEALLY out of date, poor quality, and a piece of CRAP.

But it's a great buy if you are looking for the spark gap setting for a 1977 Cadillac running a hydrogen conversion kit on a gasoline engine!

The latest edition of Fuel From Water does not contain any specific instructions for constructing an electrolyzer. It does not encourage anyone without sufficient technical background to do so.
The unit conversion errors in a previous edition have been corrected. The book has been in print since 1985 and covers research since 1970. In the recent edition, 25 of the 186 footnotes are later than 1994. This book has been used as one of the texts for courses conducted by professional engineers who are capable of evaluating its scientific accuracy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good for more than just info.
"Fuel From Water" is an exceptional book, containing anything the mind desires when entering the field of a hydrogen econonmy and/or technology. The book covers electroylsers; solid state polymer catalysts, 2 container seperation, and sulfur types.

Peavy goes into the fuel cell technologies such as pem, sofc. The types of storage of hydrogen with a non-bias opinion on the advantages and disadvantages of the storage devices. The book has more information on this topic than many others in its class. It is definately worth every penny, even if it is to open your eyes or to expand on this fuel technology.

I learned more in five minutes of reading this book than in months of wading through subject indexes in the library (much of the information cannot be found with on-line sources). More people should be made aware of the ideas this book offers in helping solve the world problem of energy. Fuel From Water is what I was looking for and I will put it to good use. Having always been interested in alternate energy sources, and since I am involved in electronics manufacturing, I find the production of electrical energy a fascinating subject. Peavey has done much of the work for me. A friend borrowed the book. He was thrilled to find that much information in one volume. He didn't return it. He just handed me the money to buy another.

As an engineer who both uses hydrogen and can work the math, I'm astonished that no one has corrected Peavey. He mixes units, get equations wrong and just plain can't spell. A decelerating engine is "braking" not "breaking", for example. His thermodynamic computations are often wrong once you work them out, his "borrowing" of other sources is painful where "propane" was not changed to "hydrogen" is all cases in a paragraph. Incredible. This text is very nearly the "Anarchist's Cookbook" of renewable energy -- there's a lot of words, some of it correct, but someone's going to get badly hurt if they actually follow this guide. All that, and a decade out of date to boot. If Amazon would take the book back, I'd gladly send them the ashes from the woodstove. ... Read more
