Book Description

Multidisciplinary resource for graduate studies and the biotechnology industry
Knowledge of the genetic basis of biological functioning continues to grow at an astronomical rate, as do the challenges and opportunities of applying this information to the production of therapeutic compounds, specialty biochemicals, functional food ingredients, environmentally friendly biocatalysts, and new bioproducts from renewable resources. While genetic engineering of living organisms transforms the science of genomics into treatments for cancer, diabetes, and heart disease, or products for industry and agriculture, the science and technology of bioseparations are the keys to delivering these products in a purified form suitable for use by people.
The methods, theory, and materials that reduce the science of bioseparations to practice, whether in the laboratory or the plant, are the subjects of Bioseparations Engineering. Examples address purification of biomolecules ranging from recombinant proteins to gene therapy products, with footnotes detailing economics of the products. Mechanistic analysis and engineering design methods are given for:
* Isocratic and gradient chromatography
* Sedimentation, centrifugation, and filtration
* Membrane systems
* Precipitation and crystallization
Topics addressed within this framework are: stationary phase selection; separations development; modeling of ion exchange, size exclusion, reversed phase, hydrophobic interaction, and affinity chromatography; the impact of regulatory issues on chromatography process design; organization of separation strategies into logical sequences of purification steps; and bridges between molecular biology, combinatorial methods, and separations science.
A result of teaching and developing the subject matter over ten years, Bioseparations Engineering is an ideal text for graduate students, as well as a timely desk book for process engineers, process scientists, researchers, and research associates in the pharmaceutical, food, and life sciences industries.

3-0 out of 5 stars Fair introduction
Good introduction of many ideas in fluid mechanics. Good for reference, but it is not a good book for learning the subject. If in fact you happen to have a solid math background you may find it very boring but still has many references to more useful sources.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good introduction
This book introduces lots of stuffs. I will consider it
as reference purpose. Not that good for learning, especially
for beginners. If one has another book as textbook already,
with this book, he can have more comprehensive thinkings
about fluid dynamics. It's a good book right on from
textbooks to special-purposed books.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great "introduction" to those well-versed in the subject
If you get through this text, you are on your way to fluid dynamics mastery. It covers much more than most engineering students will need (or care to) know. It is an important text, but should be a complementary study aid.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best introduction
I used Batchelor several years ago for an introductory course in fluid dynamics for physic students, and found it generally satisfactory. It is probably the best available overall introduction. The negative review from the Berkeley student reflects more upon the student than upon the book, in my opinion.

4-0 out of 5 stars To the Berkeley graduate student below
Although I do think that the book is over-rated, your critique is unfair. First, the book is not too advanced. Similar materials are used to teach university students in their 3rd or 4th year of studies, sometimes even earlier, in many countries. If you are not able to grasp the basic, how are you going to read the current papers in journals? How are you going to contribute new knowledge? It's better to start early with a young mind. Then, it is not a reference book (I don't need to say more in this). Also, you may be in the wrong course, or your professor suggested an unsuitable, but not necessarily bad, book for reading. The book was written with applied mathematics (you can surf around the net and see what applied mathematics means in the UK) courses in mind. You may find Lighthill's 'An informal introduction to theoretical fluid mechanics' or Tritton's 'Physical fluid dynamics' or Faber's 'Fluid dynamics for physicists' useful. Finally, I have confidence in the ability of a Berkeley student. You maybe smart, but you need to work hard too, very hard! ... Read more

Book Description

Charles Hansen began his work with solvents in 1962, and almost immediately began producing new and groundbreaking results. Since then, his Hansen Solubility Parameters have been extensively used and proven valuable to a variety of industries, including coatings, adhesives, plastics, protective clothing, and environmental protection. They allow correlations and systematic comparisons previously not possible, such as polymer solubility, swelling and permeation, surface wetting and dewetting, the solubility of organic salts, and many biological applications. Until now, however, their seemingly universal ability to predict molecular affinities has been generally taken as semiempirical.Moving beyond the Hildebrand and Flory theories, Hansen found that his approach not only quantitatively describes hydrogen bonding and polar bonding in many types of systems, but in fact agrees with and extends the very general Prigogine theory. This explains why the correlations all seem to fit with an apparently "universal" 4: it results from the validity of applying the geometric mean rule to describe dispersion, permanent dipole-permanent dipole, and hydrogen bonding interaction in mixtures of unlike molecules. Hansen Solubility Parameters provides new tables of previously unpublished correlations and parameters. The author illuminates his text with practical examples related to coatings, biological systems, pigments, and fibers, and takes a general approach that makes this reference ideal for predicting compatibility, adsorption on surfaces, orientation toward materials of similar affinities (self-assembly), and other phenomena associated with solubility and affinity. Chemists, chemical engineers, and biochemists will find this book-the collected work and experience of the father of its concept-intriguing for its theory and invaluable for its data. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars solving simultaneou material and energy balance
When coal is distilled by heating without contact with air, a wide variety of solid, liquid, and gadeous products of commercial importance is produced, as well as some significant air pollutants. The nature and amounts of the products produced depend on the temperature used in the decomposition and the type of coal. At low temperatures(400 to 750 Centigrade)the yield of synthesis gas is small relative to the yield of liquid products,whereas at high temperatures (above 900 Centigrade) the reverse is true.For the typical process flowsheet,shown in Figure P6.23:
(a)How many tons of the various products are being produced?
(b)Make an energy balance around the primary dislillation tower and benzol tower.
(c)How much (in pounds) of 40% NaOH solution is used per day for the purification of phenol?
(d)How much 50% Sulfuric acid is used per day in the pyridine purification?
(e)What weight of Sodium Sulfate is produced per day by the plant?
(f)How many cubic feet of gas per day are produced? What percent of the gas (volume)is needed for the ovens?

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding book!
The previous edition of "New Directions in Solid State Chemistry" has been my favorite book in our University Library. If you deal with Solid State Chemistry, Inorganic Materials Science or Ceramics you should read this book and keep it on your desk. Then you should read it continuously like a Bible.

It covers a lot of topics on materials synthesis, structures and characterization. One certainly can not keep in mind all compounds and experimental data presented in this book, however it is extremely exciting to find that authors forced you to discover a logic hidden in the huge volume of reviewed experimental facts and later to use this discovery in your own research.

Once I found a new edition of this book at Amazon.com, I ordered it without hesitating a second.

The only problem - it takes long time to process this order. ... Read more

Book Description

Broadly describes the essential topics of the organic chemicals industry
In the past two decades, the organic chemicals industry has undergone unprecedented restructuring, complicated feedstock problems, and massive shifts of capacity to developing countries. In the developed world, specialty chemicals have gained increasing significance. Although the fundamentals of organic chemical and polymer production have remained largely constant, one needs to be aware of the economic, structural, and political changes in the industry in order to understand its current state.
This much-expanded Second Edition of Industrial Organic Chemicals presents the various technologies and processes involved in the organic chemicals industry as an organized body of knowledge. It describes the chemistry of the seven basic building block chemicals and their derivatives, how they are manufactured, their economic importance, uses, and associated environmental issues. Also covered are two topics essential to an understanding of modern industrial chemistry-catalysis and polymer synthesis.
Key additions to this Second Edition include discussion of:
* Sustainability and "green" chemistry
* Dendrimers
* Metallocenes
* Chemicals in biotechnology
* Specialty chemicals for pharmaceuticals, electronics, fire retardation, fuel additives, foods, and other uses
* Economic, political, and social concepts for understanding future directions of the industry
Industrial Organic Chemicals, Second Edition presents the chemistry of both large-scale and specialty products while taking into account important political, environmental, and economic considerations. It provides both a narrative account of the evolution of today's industry from the viewpoint of authors intimately involved with the changes, and an essential reference for chemists, chemical engineers, plastics engineers, petroleum engineers, managers, executives, and policy makers working in and with the organic chemical industry.

3-0 out of 5 stars Only good if you want to do simulations
As for using this book for design - I would say that it is marginal at best. If you happen to use Aspen and do everything using a process simulator, this book is pretty good. From and economics/costing standpoint, this book doesn't even come close to Peters & Timmerhaus. Does not have much of a discussion on material selection - a definite drawback. It does include a nice appendix on design heuristics that draws from Walas and other sources.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fair good
This book is really good for process engineers. I don't know if there is a different edition of the one I have but there's little about CHEMCAD, the book is too focused on other simulation softwares and if you don't have one of those; solving some proposed problems gets really difficult and frustating. Packed with heuriustics on process and equipment design.Excellent choice!

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book in the market about chemical process synthesis
Covering the main topics in chemical process synthesis an design, this book present a broad view of the state of the art techniques and methods to achieve an optimum design.

With this work, Dr. Seider, et al, have given an invaluable contribution to the teaching of this field, presenting a logical an principle based approach for the "basic plant design", in contrast to the experience based traditional view.

Focusing on the extensive use of commercial process simulators, the book presents an overview of the conceptual basis of process simulation and optimization,but not its mathematical detail, giving the engineer the opportunity to focus on the process instead of focus on the mathematical and computational problem.

Basic Principles - covering historical background, basic material properties, molecular structure, and thermal properties of polymers
Influence of Processing on Properties - tying processing and design by discussing rheology of polymer melts, mixing and processing, the development of anisotropy, and solidification processes.
Engineering Design Properties - covering the different properties that need to be considered when designing a polymer component - from mechanical properties to failure mechanisms, electrical properties, acoustic properties, and permeability of polymers. The first edition was praised for the vast number of graphs and data that can be used as a reference. A new table in the appendix containing material property graphs for several polymers further strengthens this attribute. A new chapter introducing polymers from a historical perspective not only makes the topic less dry, but it also provides a chance to shade light on the role polymers played, for better and for worse, while shaping today's industrial world. The most important change made to this edition is the introduction of real-world examples and a variety of problems at the end of each chapter. ... Read more

Book Description

Until now, the literature has offered a rather limited approach to the use of fundamental kinetics and their application to catalytic reactions. Subsequently, this book spans the full range from fundamentals of kinetics and heterogeneous catalysis via modern experimental and theoretical results of model studies to their equivalent large-scale industrial production processes. The result is key knowledge for students at technical universities and professionals already working in industry.
'... such an enterprise will be of great value to the community, to professionals as well as graduate and undergraduate students attempting to move into the field of modern catalysis and kinetics. I strongly recommend you publish this book based on the proposal.' - Prof. Dr. G. A. Samorjai, University of California
'Both authors are well respected specialists, with a very long record of original top-quality work and an international reputation. A book from these authors will be considered an authoritative piece of work, I definitely support this project and I am looking forward to use the book when published.' - Prof. Dr. D. E. Resasco, University of Oklahoma
'I wholly support the proposed project. The authors are very competent young colleagues and there is a real need for such a textbook' - Prof. Dr. G. Ertl, Fritz-Haber-Institut, Max-Planck-Gesellschaft, Berlin
