5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, Thourough Statics Text
The greatest feature of this book is the generous use of examples throughout. For every type of problem, there is some close example that you can refer to.

Even though I didn't particularly enjoy the class for which this text was assigned, I think that the book itself is a great resource, and should be recognized as so. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Informative Book!
This book is an extremely well-written introduction to house framing. Each chapter is full of great, color illustrations and easy-to-follow instructions. The text is clear and concise.

I bought this book before building a redwood-framed greenhouse, and the information it provided was critical to my success. Then I bought one for my brother. I'd recommend it to anyone interested in building a greenhouse, shop, add-on room, or similar project.

Book Description

Barnett's Manual has become the industry standard, demystifying every aspect of bicycle repair by emphasizing detail, logic, and measurement. The manual, published in four volumes and printed on perforated, grease-resistant paper, can be used by both bike mechanics and the serious DIY-er. Each chapter is structured logically for maximum use: terminology, reasons for service, prerequisites, tool choices, anticipation of complications, fits and dimensions, service procedures, and troubleshooting. Extensive reference information minimizes the need to cross-reference to other sources when solving a repair problem, and the drawings on nearly every page help explain each procedure. This new, updated edition of the bible of bicycle repair also includes more than 1,000 clear and detailed drawings illustrating each procedure. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This is what you're searching for.
Don't waste your money on those paperbacks that clutter the sports sections of Barnes & Noble and Borders.
The Nashbar & Performance Bike offerings are just as inadequate.
By the time you've spent $10-$20 each on 2 or 3 of those anecdotal "manuals" with their "fits all" diagrams,
you can almost pay
the Amazon discounted price for this...........
.........THE REAL THING.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive with many details, yet perhaps a little dated
I haven't seen any bicycle maintenance books that come close to providing the kind of detail that Barnett's Manual does - detail in such areas as exact measurement and classification of parts and threads, tool part numbers for many manufacturers, and elaborate torque specifications. The Manual actually consists of four volumes with vol 4 consisting of material extracted from the previous three for easy access. The repairs and adjustments are conducted via written step-by-step procedures. Many of the adjustments utilize self-adhesive markings that are put on the bike for the purpose of exactly increasing or decreasing the tightness of bearing adjustments. Proper torquing is always specified. The Manual attempts to be comprehensive covering both road and mountain bikes and all sorts of groupos. Some of these are covered better than others. The manuals also deal with frame preparation using facing and threading tools. In some ways the manuals are a little dated. For example the wheel building and truing sections use traditioanl rims and spokes, not to mention traditional hubs. But modern wheels are using vastly reduced spoke counts, exotic spoke materials and shapes, and cartridge type hubs. The translation from the old to the new is hardly discussed, if at all. Cartridge hubs in particular are given insufficient weight. On the other hand the adjustment of newer STI derailleur systems is superb, not to mention threadless headsets, V-brakes, etc. The author probably would contend that his manuals facilitate learning the principles of bicycle repair and maintenance and that dealing with new technologies would follow the same guide lines. And there is of course some truth in that. However, a purchaser of these manuals could be disappointed if he or she expects every bicycle part to be covered in detail, becasue they are not.

5-0 out of 5 stars great manual
This book is a weath of knowledge and experence. It covers items that I never have know about and am able to do more work on my bike than ever before. It has detail explinations about how to perform repairs and maintance and will tell you if you need to start with another procdure first before starting the procedure you are about to work on.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Tecnical Manual
If you have ever needed to change a part on your bike, upgrade to something better, change out your drivetrain, tune your derailleur's, or even true a wheel... this is the book for you! With awesome in depth pictures, and step by step technical procedures for doing just about anything to the bike that you so dearly love. John Barnett's experience with bike repairs far surpasses that of the guy that you normally bring it into for those expensive repairs, so spend the money for the book, and save money in the future while at the same time learning from one of the top professionals in his business! Do it, it's an awesome book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Unbelievably detailed and user friendly!
The most detailed book on bicycle repair I have ever seen. Even though it is written for professionals, the detailed step-by-stem procedures leave nothing to assumption. All procedures are covered by detailed worksheets which you are encouraged to photocopy and use as a guide through the repair. The illustrations are great. Details, worksheets, and illustrations make this book very user friendly, even though it's target audience appears to be professionals. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book
This was a good book but out of date on many topics. It is a great all around reference or start-up and go book. I decided I wanted to learn about cars so I found this book at a tag sale and now I know the basics. I would suggest this book for its no-nonsense and in-depth approach.

4-0 out of 5 stars A must for motoring enthusiasts.
I'm an automotive engineering student and I use this book as a reference. It provides information on virtually everything on or related to a car, tools, brakes, suspensions, fuel systems, just to name a few. Besides that, it also provides service and diagnosis information on every system of the car it covers. The language used is simple to understand, and yet blends well with layman's terms. There's also a dictionary on automotive terms in the book. Recommended to motoring enthusiasts and automotive students. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Must Have
If you're planning on building any of the hard parts of a house like footings, foundation, floors, walls, ceilings, roofs, stairs, masonry or shingles, you will want this book so you can figure out how to make them plumb, square, level, and evenly distributed. (I think that covers most of the carpentry sections)
He shows a few options for arriving at each layout, typically mathematically, from charts, and from pictures, so if you have trouble with one of them you can try another.
Octagons aren't very popular in my neighborhood, but if those (or other polygons) appear in yours, you'll find he has good information on them too.
I'd recommend a read through the book for suggestions when you first get it, (I did that in a long evening) and if you're a really good student you can follow along with all the examples. (I wasn't). But keep it by your side and read the chapter you need as you build. It will pay for itself in saved time and straigher work on the first job.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful for learning or reference
I am a project manager for a commercial / industrial contractor. So many times I am changing gears, direction . . . in coordinating the project. Calls from other contractors and or the field keeps you busy and frequently having more to do immediately than you feel you can do in days. But this book is useful. While much of it relates to residential construction, simple layouts and thought processes do not change. While so many times I am challenged with laser layouts and trades that swear their layout is on the money, a few time proven methods and understanding can prove the " sure money " wrong. This book is well organized, clearly written and the compilation of formulas and calculations is helpful. This book will prove to be very useful for a do it yourselfer or anyone working within the trades or offices alike. I certainly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
This book is a must have! Great information and laid out well. I wish I had known about this book earlier.

5-0 out of 5 stars this is a keeper
This book is well thoughtout and covers all the details a builder needs to do accurate layouts. I would recommend it for both those learning and the professionals in the building trades as a reference source. I have seen and purchased some of the authors other books and would not recommend them to building professionals.

I liked that this book is hard covered. The diagrams used to explain the concepts are accurate and concise. It is not "exotic" in the types of layouts it covers but covers the basics well. Lead carpenters and journeyman layout carpenters won't find much new here. But for apprentice and carpenters and builders still learning there trade it has merit.

5-0 out of 5 stars A book that answers questions...
This is a book I have enjoyed reading and learning from. The book is well worth the money. I have purchased a copy for my son and he found it to be very helpful to him in his work... ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Stick to IFSTA's Bld Construction...
Mr. Brannigan, whether senile or just incompetent, fails to write his book in any logical order. He is all over the place when presenting the few facts he is actually correct about. The book currently stands at 667 pages. It would be 1/3 of that length if it weren't for the numerous opinions, hearsay and accumulated ramblings of this arm chair quarterback who has apparently done more fire buffing than fire fighting! Studying for a promotional or just increasing your knowledge base? Stick with IFSTA's Bld Contstruction and study guide or Vinnie Dunn's "Collapse of Burning Buildings."

5-0 out of 5 stars THE book for the Fire Service.
This should be required reading for anyone in the fire service who deals with Structural fire fighting. The book is pretty straight forward and in an easy to read font. I love this book. It also has a pretty decent index if you're using it for school. Out of all the books I've had to buy for school so far, this is the best one. If you're a fan of Brunacini, you may find a few points where they disagree, thus creating the great debate between which author is right. The principles of this book are easily put to use in day to day firefighting and could possibly save your life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must Read For All Fire Personnel
This is not an easy reading book. Dry and distant at times it is however the finest collection of fire dept related constrution information ever collated. Whether you like it or not you MUST read this book. The information within could make the difference when your backs against the wall.

5-0 out of 5 stars Important information for all firefighters
This book is essential for all firefighters to read, and a MUST for all fire officers! If you want to know anything about building construction for the fire service...Brannigan has the answer.

4-0 out of 5 stars Essential information for all fire fighters
Working fire fighters can't read this book without feeling both more confident (from their increased knowledge) and more frightened (from realizing how much they DIDN'T know before). While some of the author's "tactical considerations" and advice on actual fireground operations are kind of silly, his knowledge of building construction is vast and he's able to communicate in non-technical, plain English. I learned a lot from this book, and would recommended to any fire fighter. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good help for the Do-it-yourself remodeler.
If you're a do it yourself remodeler or basement finisher this is a good reference to make sure you meet the building codes. It provides some quick answers to things like nailing requirements, maximum spans for doors, roof frames, and floor joists, and many other quick facts for plumbing, electrical, fire and structural codes. But for many questions/issues it just lists the IRC or UPC reference. For that reason it would be even more valuable if you had a copy of the International Residential Code in case you needed more details since it provides the references. I have a building permit to finish my basement and I want to make sure that I meet the codes and this book has been helpful. I plan to buy the plumbing, building and electrical Code Check too.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent reference
I read a couple negative reviews of this book and almost didn't buy it! If you have common knowledge of construction and building this book will be an invaluable reference for you. Many things are abbreviated, so it might look confusing at first. Using some common sense and the abbreviation key in front will get you through the initial learning curve. This book will help you comply with electrical codes, plumbing, etc., with sketches only where needed. I rebuild houses on the side, and this book is invaluable.

4-0 out of 5 stars helping hand
any time a book comes out that can help the average home owner to the professional with something that has to be done any where is some thing that you need to go out and get. this book shows you what is needed, when you need it, and at what stage of your project.this ,by no means, is to take place of actual codes or instructions from your local building code office.this is a tool that will help you but if used incorrectly will cost you.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not bad, at this price.
Cheap, easy, and fun to read. Well-organized. It's good for simple stuff... stair/railing dimensions, distance from spa to cutoff switch, etc. But as another reader says, in such a small book, don't expect the entire building code to be in there. Still, if I lost my copy, I'd run right out and buy another one.

2-0 out of 5 stars Sketchy
I suppose if you are already familiar with all of the code sections involved in a code inspection, or at least the portion presented in this form, this would be a helpful form. However, if, even as a building inspector, you need occassional reminders of exactly what a code section involves, this may force the user into guessing what is meant by a particular item on this form. Unfortunately, as a result, I firmly believe, inspections done using this form will not represent the kind of accuracy it seems to imply it can provide from the authors/reviewers. Some of the diagrams are useful. However, a great deal is still lacking in helping the inspector, layman or professional, in understanding exactly what they are looking for.

For instance, one of the items under "Service Conductors" within the "Temporary Power" section reads "Identify neutral at both ends". If the National Electric Code Section referenced (200-6b) is accurate, then this actually means that non-white wires in temporary power systems that are #6 or larger, but not the commonly used #8 copper, must be marked with a white identification tape wrapped around the insulation of the wire in the junction boxes in which both ends of the wire terminate. I'm not sure many of my fellow professionals in the building inspection profession, much less the layman, would know these specifics from this short identifying phrase provided in the form. Furthermore, it could take several books, including a copy of the National Electric Code itself, for someone to fully understand what this code section means.

As a result, I don't believe that this form is designed for the layman at all. I don't believe it will be useful to the typical home buyer having a home built. I think they could be much better served by the local code inspectors. If they were not convinced that a local code inspector would be likely to serve them well, for whatever reason, they should consider using the money to help pay for a full-fledged private inspection by a local home inspector who does new construction inspections.

Unlike some of the other reviewers, I do not have the benefit of knowing any of the authors on a first name basis. I'm not sure that would help. If the form is to be useful, it needs to be useful in and of itself, not because of any personal contact with any of the authors. They won't be available to answer questions from the purchasers of the form when the form leaves the reader/purchaser confused. ... Read more
