5-0 out of 5 stars My Go-To Reference for 30 years
I began using Design in 1968 when I was in the USAF as a Civil Engineer. The wealth of information compiled by Mr. Seelye is staggering. Even though some of the materials are archaic, the formulae are timeless. I find the tables and nomographs particularly useful for quickly checking the work of my consultants. I've found it useful and I'm sure any Civil Engineer will as well. It would make a great graduation gift for your favorite CE. Computers will need upgrading but this book won't.

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful book for practical engineering
I bought Seelye's book on design in 1971. I am sure that it has gone through some updates since, but for the last three decades it has been a ready source of quick usefull and practical engineering data. Granted, an in depth design problem will require other references and checks of current codes, but there is plenty in Seelye's book to find a direction and to solve "shirtsleeve" problems.

One problem that I do have with the book that I bought is that several pages are blank. The blank pages are scattered throughout the book. I don't know if this was a publishers error or something intentional that was left out. The table of contents lists information that is supposed to be on these pages, so I suspect it is a bad book.

All in all, it is a worthwhile investment, even if I did pay $26.50 29 years ago.

4-0 out of 5 stars Broad range of detail and hard to find info, with calc's.
This is a collection of years of work detailed by a civil engineer dealing with many types of materials and projects. His formulas and charts are well documented with an excellent index. Great for structural and general civil engineering type of work.

2-0 out of 5 stars Dubious Value
Don't be fooled by the date (May 1996) in the book's description. This book was last updated in 1959. It, therefore, does not reflect the requirements of any modern building codes or take advantage of any of the latest research. For instance, the referenced ACI code is dated 1947, AASHO 1949, etc. The book still has a lot of practical information and historical significance but will require care in its use. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Easy to understand, helpful for K-12 teachers
Popham's work is some of the easiest-to-read, least jargon filled, in the area of designing classroom tests. Chapter by chapter, he takes the reader through the different kinds of test questions, how to write them, how to grade them, how to tell if your students understand what you're asking; then he provides case studies, examples, and lists of further reading.

The easy kinds of questions come first: selected-response, that is, questions where the test-taker picks an answer from ones provided by the teacher, such as multiple-choice, true-false, and matching. Popham explains how to write these clearly, how to reduce the confusion on the direction of true-false questions (and why it's NOT a good idea to try and "trick" your students by writing ambiguous or deliberately confusing answers).

Then the constructed-response type of questions, that is, ones where students write the answers: short-answer and essay. Again, Popham discusses how to write these clearly, how to write instructions indicating what kind of answer you expect, and, perhaps most important, especially for the novice teacher, how to grade these types of questions. He goes through the issue of "rubrics" - grading systems for essay questions which tell how many points will be given for different features of the answer, such as the value of the information, the spelling and grammar, the use of certain key words, etc, and how to decide what will constitute an "excellent" or "acceptable" or "not acceptable" answer in those categories.

One of the most extensive and informative features of the book is Popham's sidebars on how to explain to students why they have to take these kinds of tests, and, even more, how to explain tests to parents, especially standardized tests. Explaining to parents what the tests are supposed to measure, and how test results will be used, is a very big issue these days, especially in states with high-stakes testing; Popham's book will give you practice in addressing questions from parents, administrators, etc. ... Residential construction accounts for more than half of all of the building construction dollars spent annually in the United States. Architects and construction professionals must have a basic understanding of the material and structural systems appropriate to this type of construction as well as a working knowledge of codes and management procedures. Building on Edward Allen's best-selling Fundamentals of Building Construction, this book provides the information they need, with an authoritative, in-depth look at the procedures and materials specific to home building. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars A modified "Fundamentals of Building Construction"
This is awfully similar to the book in the title. Even down to the same photos separating the chapters. I'd buy F of BC if I had to choose, since it has so much more material. There's nothing in here that cannot be found in the two other Rob Thallon books.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book, but overpriced
I bought this book sight unseen because I also have Rob Thallon's book "Graphic Guide to Frame Construction" and was pretty impressed with it. While "Fundamental of Residential Construction" is a very good book on all aspects of residential construction, there's isn't that much of an improvement on the typical voc-tech textbooks on construction (which are available for less) to make it worth the price.

...

5-0 out of 5 stars THE reference for Designer, Builder, or Student
Fundamentals of Residential Construction is a welcome update for my reference library. As a residential architect, it is refreshing not to have to wade through irrelevant commercial methodology. This edition is residential specific, but broad-based covering alternative building systems and the most current construction materials. I especially appreciate that it begins with chapters on the context for construction, and the construction and design communities, areas of discussion most often neglected. The well-balanced mix of diagrammatic and photographic details is very helpful. I highly recommend it for both the student and the professional.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Book!
Its simple, well-illustrated explanations make understanding and implementation easy. It covers every aspect of residential construction, including trowel trades, mechanical and structural systems, and landscaping! In a nutshell- this is a 'must-have' for anyone working in residential construction! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Reference Manual
Not only is this book great as a tool to study for the PE exam, it also is one of the most useful mechanical engineering reference books. If there is only one engineering reference book you could have, I would strongly recommend this one!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great PE reference Guide
I used this book along with the class and the key is to get familiar with the book. Passed the PE on the first try. I still use the book as my primary reference it's that good! Unfortunately, the book doesn't talk to you, or transfer material by osmosis so you still need to take the time and read it. The book doesn't cover fundamentals(if you need this, get the FE book). It gives you cookbook formulas and information needed to solve about 90% of the problems. It may be wise to take a PE refresher course to help walk you through the material. As for the errors, the publisher posts the errata/corrections on the web and keeps it updated. There is also a solutions manual for the book, I highly recommend this if you are preparing for the PE.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Quintessential Engineering Reference
This is bar-none the most complete and easiest to understand reference and study guide on the market. I used it almost exclusively when studying for and taking the P.E. and passed on the first try. My only regret is that I did not buy a copy upon graduation from college as it and would have most likely increased my on the job learning curve. It is truly a must-have reference for any engineer's bookshelf

My hat is off to M. R. Lindeburg, P.E.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great tool, but FULL of errors!
Don't get me wrong, I don't regret buying this book, but the overwhelming number of errors in this book is staggering and inexcusable, especially since all of the formulas and most of the problems should just be cut-n-paste from various respected sources. It's frustrating not knowing if your getting a practice problem wrong because you're doing it wrong or because the book has the wrong formulas, problem wording, problem answers, etc.

Even the online errata list only covers a portion of the errors.

5-0 out of 5 stars New Edition
While evaluating the merits of the other customer reviews I noted that they were all posted prior to this edition. While normally not an issue with this type of reference manual, it is important right now, seeing as how the Mechanical Engineering PE Exam Format is to be changed drastically with the next Exam. I would expect that this new edition has been developed to incorporate this change but have yet to see any comments as to how well it has been changed. I currently possess the previous edition and plan to take the exam in October 2001. While I agree with the other reviewers on the previous editions excellence, I would like to know whether there is any substantial reason to purchase the New Edition and replace my earlier edition. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Essential reading from a wise author for do-it-yourself'ers
Don't sell yourself or family short, get this or another comparable book if you are going to tackle electrical work in your home.

This book is somewhat technical and that may put some folks off. However, it is only as technical as is needed to provide for safe installation of electrical wiring in the home. I appreciate the code references, as a do-it-yourself'er it is important to understand why it is done as it is, because no home project is ever an exact copy of problem in a book. This book is an essential part of a do-it-yourself'ers library, especially if you are going to take on any substantial projects.

5-0 out of 5 stars Used 1993, 1996, and 1999 versions of this book.
I have wired four new homes and remodeled one using the concepts in this book. The homes ranged from 3200 to 5000 square feet in size. The 5000 sq/ft house used 400 amp service for the main panels. I am a do it yourself homeowner. I am a firmware engineer by trade so I don't wire for a living. This book was magnificent in helping me understand how to put the entire picture together for a large complicated home. These homes included security systems, phone systems, home audio systems, internet wiring, and of course power and lighting everywhere that I needed it. I learned so much from this book and the way that it walks through each room in the house. I recommend following it all of the way through on your own house plans. What it lacks I was able to find by looking at homes being constructed in the area. Things like how high up do I put the outlets and switches comes to mind. The code changes every three years and so does this book. I got most of my knowledge from the 1993 book. I used the 1996 and 1999 books on the later homes but the basics were already there. All code changes are very well covered in the latest edition and nothing is dropped from edition to edition that I know of. I am very impressed with Mullin's style and thought that I could show some of my gratitude back for the help that he gave me to do this over and over again. I have recommended this book to many friends who have also wired their own homes. If I needed to I would buy it again but I have decided to live in one of my houses for a while. What I believe this book has that others do not is a grasp of the whole picture. I was able to do the entire project each time with this book. I installed the service conductors from the transformer to the house. I built up the main breaker panels and subpanels. I performed the load calculations to make sure that all circuits were properly balanced. I don't think that many of the other wiring books cover all of these things. You can perform the entire wiring of your residential home by yourself with the knowledge that you can glean from this book and a few questions asked of your local inspectors and examining the work of electricians wiring in your area. Make sure that you follow the code and not the local electricians though because I do not know how some of them pass inspections with some of the work that they do. Good luck on your project.
Thanks Ray for a great book.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best I have tried.
This book is my electrical bible. I tried several books before I found this one. I bought it when I was trying to rewire an old house. The first 2 books I bought left me dazed and confused. I finally spent an afternoon in the bookstore browsing through every electrical book I could find until I ran across this. What a find. It not only explains clearly what has to be done, but why. The book makes good use of tables to summarize information and excellent use of diagrams. It not only teaches you to wire correctly, but teaches you the code as well. Highly recommended.

If you don't know what a wirenut is, this may not be the book for you as it assumes some level of knowhow on the part of the reader. Otherwise, this is likely to be the last residential wiring book you will ever buy.

4-0 out of 5 stars Dunwoody uses it -- you should too
I went to Dunwoody Institute, and their electrical department uses this as a textbook for future electricians. The biggest downside is it doesn't cover some of the low voltage/HVAC in the depth that it does everything else. It has constant code references, but it also explains things plainly enough that most people can understand them. It is a little expensive, but I would definately recomend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars comprehensive, yet easy to understand
This is a highly detailed book that clearly describes how to wire a home that meets 2002 National Electrical code requirements. The book is nicely organized and contains a wealth of information on how to select proper wire and box sizes, locations for recepticles, lighting requirements, etc. However, it is not a "how to" book-it won't tell you how to fish a wire or change a circuit breaker. I used this book to completely rewire my 1950's kitchen and it took all the guesswork out of the project. Now every time I start an electrical project, I consult this book to make sure I do it correctly. One of my goals in life is to never have to call an electrcian for help again and this book has taken me a long way toward it. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great overview of a complicated process
Owning your own home has long been considered the American Dream. For many, that includes designing and building the homes themselves. But building a home is a complex project filled with pitfalls and traps, and unwary budding homeowners can find their dreams turning into nightmares.

Enter Mark Smith, who has built several houses of his own. Written by a man who acted as his own general contractor, "The Owner-Builder Book" is crammed with useful advice on how to oversee your own project, from planning to construction. But be warned: it's unflinchingly honest about the amount of work and stress involved. While Mark Smith writes that it's possible to build a house in six months, first will come at least a year of planning and organizing. Once construction begins, you'll have to deal with ensuring that subcontractors appear on time and finish their work on time before the next group of workers appears. You may also have to deal with problems such as late deliveries of materials, subcontractors who don't show up, or who demand advances before working, threatened lawsuits,

Reading this book will give you a better appreciation of what the general contractor goes through. It will either fire your desire to run the show yourself and pocket the savings, or gratefully turn over the work to someone who does it for a living. But what it will also do is give you the information needed to make informed decisions that, even if you work with a contractor, will save you money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful book!
I was fortunate to come across this book as I was making my decision to owner build my custom home. This book was an excellent resource and it allowed me to go in to my construction effort well informed and ready to tackle the project. From tax insights, to planning and organizing techniques this book covers everything that I needed to know. It's step by step plan of attack, and it's insightful and fun to read reminders truly helped me get into the drivers seat. In the end, I was able to save a substantial amount of money in the construction of my home, as well as avoiding several headaches, and mistakes along the way. The owner builder book chronicled owner builders like myself who had a story to tell, and insider tips. I also learned strategies that enabled me to take advantage of tax benefits. In owner building, knowledge isn't only power, it's tremendous savings.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful Guidance * Practical Advice to PLAN, PLAN, PLAN
This is an excellent book to read during the PLANNING stages of your building project. The book is written in an easy-to-read format and had insightful suggestions on cost savings, tax avoidance, quality construction and more.
Highly recommended!

4-0 out of 5 stars When Lenders Listen to Owner-Builders
The Owner-Builder world is here. When the cost of buying a home in the local subdivision is priced out of the hands of 50% of the local population it is time to look for alternatives.

The title of this book states it all. The Owner-Builder book is the first purchase (must have it) for those considering building their next home to meet family needs. The Author takes an on hands approach listing subject matter in easy to find sections. I like the way he relays this information.

The book will guide you to understanding many of the areas you are expected to know prior to talking seriously to a lender when securing a construction loan. I recommend this book to anyone approaching me for a construction loan. If they can complete the exercises and follow thru with the recommendations, they will have my ear for considering them for a loan. As a Construction Lender and Construction Site Supervisor this book is a must read for my clients. It saves money, time and enhances communication for all involved. Thank You for a great tool I can add to my professional arsenal. I recommend this book daily.

2-0 out of 5 stars lacking in actual construction information
I found the book helpful in areas such as financing, getting subs to show up on time, and getting good prices on material.
I was looking for very specific info regarding the actual steps of constructing your own home. I need to know exactly what type of foundation is best, how to calculate much fill I'd need for the project and so on. If you're looking for a factual book on home construction, this is not the one. I'll keep looking. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This is pretty good!
I bought this study guide to help me in my geology class. It isn't the same edition as my textbook but it is still the same. The chapters are the same and it has really helped me remember the material. The pages have fill in the blank and multiple choice and practice quizzes. All the answers are at the end of the book. I recomend this for anyone who is taking geology and is using the "Earth" book.

5-0 out of 5 stars An outstanding introductory textbook in physical geology
Despite the proliferation of introductory physical geology textbooks in recent years, none have surpassed the quality of Tarbuck and Lutgens' "Earth". The text is accurate, up-to-date, well-organized, and exceptionally lucid. The writing flows nicely and presents complex topics and ideas in a way that is easy for non-scientists to understand, while at the same time resisting the trend toward "dumbing-down" that has recently affected many introductory textbooks in Earth sciences. The book is also illustrated wonderfully with diagrams that are effectively designed, beautifully executed, and perfectly matched to the accompanying text. The photographs are likewise outstanding in subject and quality, with great efforts obviously having been made to find excellent pictures that complement the text and clearly illustrate the features and processes being described. The overall quality of the photographs is far better than in most other textbooks of this kind. Substantial improvements have been made for the sixth edition, including the addition of helpful illustrations to the glossary and the addition of many new photographs throughout the book (for example, compare the 5th and 6th edition pictures of drumlins, moraines, igneous rock textures, tsunamis, sinkholes, etc.). After examining many textbooks, I have decided to use this one in the undergraduate course I will teach next year.

3-0 out of 5 stars Earth - an average introductory textbook
This book has dozens of errors, but in its defense, I must say that every introductory textbook I've used or reviewed has similar errors. For example, thermal expansion due to daily temperature fluctuations does NOT fracture rocks. Fire fractures rocks, and local fires can occur in many deserts. The photo of a rock split is actually due to ice (not frost) wedging. Deserts can be freezing. The book does not address the importance of past climates. Most of North America's landforms were formed under wet, warm climates, not today's. The hydrologic cycle should be expanded to the geohydrologic cycle, which incorporates plate tectonics. Plate tectonics, as presented, is rather primitive. We're in, I'd say, 3rd generation plate tectonics, but it is not being taught. Mountain glacial landscapes are entirely misinterpreted, based on a false paradigm originating in the 1840s. Yosemite Valley is far more a relict tropical landscape than a glaciated one, and Bridalveil Falls has existed for 10s of millions of years before glaciation. Evolution of desert landscapes is equally as bad. The authors don't understand pediments, which are exhumed weathering fronts (as in Joshua Tree National Park) or exhumed detachments (as in the Mojave Desert). Etc., etc.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lots of fun for rocks!
This book is an excellent introductory text, with a wide scoop and a clear and descriptive style. The pictures are gorgeous and informative, and the side notes (Boxes) are powerful examples of the topics being discussed, as well as fascinating sources of trivia (do you know what Bingham Canyon is?) that add flavor to the book! My only complaint was that there are no chapter summaries, but as the material was clear and concise, I had no need for them! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiration for R&D
An engineer friend of mine showed me this book and the next day I bought one for myself. Any time I'm faced with a design problem this is the first place I look. The illustrations are very well done and the text descriptions are illuminating and worthwhile reading.

Cheers to Sclater and Chironis!

5-0 out of 5 stars Informative and fun
this book is for the person who likes to fool around in the workshop inventing things. I like to do that as often as I can and this book has really boosted my productivity in the shop. Before I start on a new project I like to scan the book again and see if I can use any of the ideas. I never fail to find something I can use. The drawings are a big help in understanding the devices. There is no other book like this. It is a gathering of all the neat gadgets all in one book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Mechanisms and Mechanical Devices Sourcebook
Detailed graphical and pictorial images of many different mechanisms grouped in catagories for easy searching. When your stuck on a mechanical design, this book can be a great help.

5-0 out of 5 stars *Excellent* reference source book for brainstorming

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must For Design Engineers
This book covers all the fundamental issues related to bolts and bolted joints. It is very easy to read, and does not go too deeply into technical subjects, but gives the reader a full appreciation for the issues involved. As a materials engineer I appreciated the section on bolting materials. As a design engineer, I found the sections on designing bolted joints very helpful. As Plato expressed long ago, the wiser you are, the less you realize you know. After reading this book, design engineers not familiar with all the issues will likely not take bolts and bolted joints for granted. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars not for beginners!
Very detailed book on pools with US measurments. Not a guide on how to take care of your pool, but more of a deeper look at pools. From chemistry to construction, etc. Having this book at the pool store where I work at is very handy.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Pool Maintenance Manual
I really liked this book. Alot of information, but written in a way everyone could read. You don't have to be in the business to own this book, although if you are a recommend this book two fold. If u are in the pool maintenance business you must have this book as your bible and quick refrence. I am a pool technician and do use this book often.

4-0 out of 5 stars Almost perfect... alomost
This is a great book that explains the "whys" as well as the hows". Lets face it... what's the point playing around with water chemitry if you have no idea what is behind all the effects.

Why almost perfect??? It has no information on the benefits of a salt water pool/chlorinator. The more I've read elswhere, this seems to be a great way to go and I would have like to additional info on it in this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Professional Service Man's Bible
I purchased this book before I became involved in the complex industry. It soon became my biggest source for knowledge and has really helped me reach my position now. I strongly recommend this book to anyone considering entering the industry or already involved. It is a very helpful book

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for handyman pool owners, not just those in the trade
I'm not in the pool maintenance trade but I've owned and maintained a pool, built two fish ponds and am currently having a pool, spa and koi pond built. Being an engineer by education, I was thirsting for in-depth information and wasn't disappointed. My pool plaster will be black and I was especially interested in Tamminen's very detailed opinions on the controversial topic of pool start-up after plastering and how to avoid mottling from plaster dust (a BIG problem with colored plaster.) But there's a wealth of other tips as well. For instance, I'm installing a sand filter, despite claims that it can't filter particles as small as those trapped by a DE filter, based on the comparative information in this book. A sand filter promises relatively low maintenance and my dark bottom doesn't require the same high clarity as a white plaster pool.

I might have liked more info on the hazards of installing rocks in the water on a notched bond beam, under-edge fiber optic pool lights and ways to hide pool tiles. But those would more appropriately be in a book dedicated to pool design and construction rather than pool maintenance. Also, the discussion of fish pond design and maintenance was a bit too rudimentary to be of much value, although, like the rest of the book, the author wasn't shy about stating his opinions strongly. I liked that.

All in all, this is a treasure trove of very practical information that should really prove its worth after my pool is completed.... ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent HVAC Book
This is an excellent HVAC text. The concepts are clearly explained and well developed. The references in the book are current with ASHRAE standards which is of utmost utility and importance. The minor drawback from the text is the simplicity of the examples; fortunately the excellent explanation and development of the concepts by the authors helps in overcoming this small flaw. Excellent book overall. I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Used it as a Quick referernce book for HVAC course
This book is a good source for determining all the design needs for HVAC systems from calculating the heating /cooling load to duct design and fan selection which is essential to assure an economical, energy-efficient, maintainable and flex design that will only not be technically adequate but also meet the user within the allocated budget. I consider this book a key to get in the HVAC industry and a reference for HVAC study courses. ... Read more
