5-0 out of 5 stars A terrific book
Illustrated Sourcebook of Mechanical Components has lots and lots and lots of line drawings of machinery components. The drawings are clear and simple. Each is accompanied by a well written description, usually a few lines but longer if needed. An interesting book for anyone mechanically inclined. For engineers there are tables and formulas where needed. A great book.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent resource
I am an ME for a company which builds CNC's, and like the book very much. The illustrations show each idea without exraneous parts, and the accompanying explanations are very clear. It also has tables and equations to lay out some of the mechanisms. It is an excellent idea jogger and has good entertainment value for people who are mechanically inclined.

5-0 out of 5 stars The jewel of my professional library
I can't thank the author enough for the Illustrated Sourcebook of Mechanical Components. It is as interesting to study as any book I've seen in a long, long time. It is as engrossing as a crossword puzzle can sometimes be. My observation is that the sourcebook presents an almost limitless smorgasbord of engineering examples and principles seasoned with a unique sauce of tinkerer's ingenuity and common sense. Thanks again for the Illustrated Sourcebook of Mechanical Components. It will be the jewel of my professional library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just the right book for a mechanical engineer

1-0 out of 5 stars Poorly written, disappointing.
The author seems to have no graduate level education. This book is filled with empirical equations and has no academic deapth. The author himself does not know where each equations come from. Most of the exercise problems are the exact copy from other books. There is no reference listed, and it seems a violation of copywrite. Too many typos and wrongly drawn figures bother readers. This book is a waste of time and money. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent, practical, and fun treehouse building guide!
We built a fantastic treehouse this summer using many of the ideas from this book. My 8-yr old son and 6-yr old daughter learned so much from the simple illustrations. The book helped us decide on a tree, a design, and gave us nuts & bolts instructions as well as many practical tips. We highly recommend this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Information on building a Basic Treehouse
I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants a step-by-step plan to building a basic treehouse and many fun additions on to the treehouse such as crows nests, rope ladders, pulleys, telephones, furniture and more. The instructions are very clear and easy to follow. If you want to build a more complicated treehouse(for example a treehouse with electrical outlets or more than 2 rooms) this book most likely isn't for you. For people who just want to browse pictures of amazing treehouses around the world I suggest Peter Nelson's Treehouses: The Art and Craft of Living out on A Limb.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best of the Best!
By far, the Stiles' books are the best. I'm building a treehouse right now for my son. Following guidelines in this book, I'm certain that we will enjoy it for years to come.

4-0 out of 5 stars Best for those with children
I found myself a bit down on my luck after the dot-com bubble burst. I came across this book and bought it using my last few dollars. By following the simple directions contained therein, I managed to build a magnificent tree house in a very sturdy elm in a nice, quiet neighborhood. Unfortunately, I was evicted for "trespassing" soon after moving in. My only complaint regarding this book is that it gives short shrift to tree house zoning laws in the US.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book - still timely
Like the 24 other reviews of this book I built a great treehouse for my kids in fall 2002. Many, many people ask me how I learned to build one and I simply show them the book. I even used an illustration to modify a one-tree tree house into a two tree treehouse that is 8 X 10 feet and 15 feet off the ground. My 8 year old daughter built a rope ladder and had a blast. I've since looked at several other treehouse books to see how this one compares - and for the price, it's well worth it. ... Read more

Book Description

Two of the nation's largest corporations stand accused of causing the deaths of children. Representing the bereaved parents, the unlikeliest of heroes emerges: a young, flamboyant Porsche-driving lawyer who hopes to win millions of dollars and ends up nearly losing everything -- including his sanity.

A Civil Action is the searing, compelling tale of a legal system gone awry -- one in which greed and power fight an unending struggle against justice. Yet it is also the story of how one man can ultimately make a difference. With an unstoppable narrative power reminiscent of Truman Capote's In Cold Blood, A Civil Action is an unforgettable reading experience that leaves the reader both shocked and enlightened.

5-0 out of 5 stars A definite page-turner!
I don't know why this book isn't on the New York Times bestseller list. There can be only one reason it's not there; the word isn't out YET. If you're a John Grisham fan, you'll treasure this read AND it's a true story! The author spent eight years following this case that began with a cluster of leukemia cases that popped up in Woburn, Massachusetts in the late seventies. The plaintiffs think the illnesses came from a contamination of the drinking water with TCE, trichloroethylene. Not much more can be said without giving away the resolution, but along the way you'll be amazed (and furious) at the personalities; the federal judge, the young, cocky, self-assured plaintiffs' attorney, Joel Schlichtmann, and his powerful adversaries, the attorneys for the big-monied corporate defendants. The author effectively draws you into the story with his perceptive prose and his clear understanding of the legal subtleties involved. He knows just where to pick you up and drop you off, chapter by chapter. Don't miss this one, but beware, once you start reading, you'll be hooked

5-0 out of 5 stars Astonishing, an amazing book!!
A Civil Action is one of the best books that I've read in the past 12 months! This is the story of the Woburn case, a case against W. R. Grace and Beatrice Foods, in which two of their subsideries poisoned two wells that were used as part of the city of Woburn's water supply. The poisonious water caused the deaths of several children and health complications of many adults. The book tells of the legal battle that the families and their lawyer faced when fighting against two multi-billion dollars company. Told in an easy flowing narrative that captures your attention and doesn't let go. I cheered, I cried, I cussed. Talk about injustice! The book left me with the feeling that if I could get my hands on a couple of the defendant's lawyers, violence and bodily harm would befall somebody, but it wouldn't be yours truly. Then, common sense enters the picture, and the best revenge on W R Grace and Beatrice Foods is that the story is told and is told by an excellent writer. There is a reason why this book is a best seller. But, I can't help to think that there is divine justice after all. And here I thought John Grisham's novels were fairy tales. This book proves the addage that truth is stranger than fiction. I wish the families of Woburn well! An excellent book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Justice?
This book is a depressing lesson in the ways that our judicial system don't work. An adverserial system of justice, by its very nature, leads not to an inquiry into the truth but instead to a polarized system where each side is fighting for its own side and disinterested in the merits of its opposition.

While this book was, in many ways, a real downer, it was also a fascinating chronicle of litigation. I was immediately drawn in my the families' tragedies, Schlichtmann's flawed but good-hearted optimism, and the interaction between the lawyers and the judge. As Schlichtmann swirled deeper into debt, I found it impossible not to feel a growing sense of desparation along with him. The ending is bitterly disappointing, but in many ways the families eventually got what they wanted with subsequent EPA actions and criminal prosecutions.

My husband and I are both attorneys. Last year, he was involved in a case in which the outcome was simply criminal. I felt I could relate in a deeper sense to the drama in A Civil Action after experiencing such a travesty of justice firsthand. We have to work within the confines of the flawed legal system that exists now, but we must accept that it is far from perfect. Judges and juries--as humans--get things wrong all the time. This book, in gripping prose, demonstrates this basic fact of life in all too vivid of detail.

5-0 out of 5 stars Masterpeice
Brilliant, enlightening, enteraining, and mindful work presented here by Jonathan Harr. Harr manages to consume you in the lives of all the characters of this book. The funny thing about the book is that it doesn't move you vicserally about changing the enviroment for the good, but moves you in a very cerebral way.

I don't care one way or another about the enviroment and all those Greenpeace annoying little idiots. I do care about humanity and Harr shows it here. This is a must read.

4-0 out of 5 stars Unknown soldier
Jan Schlictmann, Anne Anderson, the Gamaches and all of the families in this book and beyond are not the only ones who were seriously impacted by this case. Look at what happened to 'GK ', a longtime former Woburn resident who was forced to leave Massachusetts under questionable circumstances...
GK was a small child in Woburn in the 1960s. Bounced from family to family, handicapped, abused and severely neglected, GK had been treated out of state for years, living in a hospital with no visitors with a suspicious diagnosis prior to coming
back to Woburn. From then he was treated at the same hospitals, lived in the same neighborhoods as the families mentioned in this book, appeared in Woburn district court, where the first complaints of water problems emerged and which file was later refused his review without reason. When this book came out, GK worked for Grace Co. in Cambridge,Mass. and was suddenly discharged even though an excellent job is said to have been done. Medical records began disappearing without explanation from the hospitals the cancer-diagnosed children were treated in, and a former guardian who had arranged for his new social security number began acting suspiciously.
Symptoms of extreme monitoring and control began showing themselves, as GK became a target of increased audits, questionable activity at banks such as Fleet and Citizens, phone and communications tampering, threatening phone calls and being put under surveillance (including a possible FBI agent out of Tennessee, where Barry Mawn worked- Mawn is a Woburn native). Some speculated that mistaken identity had occurred, others that the federal government was waging war on a young child who simply put, survived a real tragedy in Woburn,Mass. Others speculated that a long term goal of erasing GK's existence was underway, propelled by Harr's book and a prior newspaper article detailing GK's search for his family roots.
In the 1980s GK worked for a small service firm allegedly under the control of a New Jersey parent entity. This company routinely dumped toxic chemicals on the ground in Woburn and when GK objected to the policy, GK was forced to resign or be fired. Four to six years later, a man bearing the name of the sole officer of the parent to the service firm out of New Jersey was introduced to GK by a mutual friend. Subsequent research by GK many years later revealed that his 'friend' bore the same name as the chief officer of the parent company and lived in Massachusetts just as that executive allegedly did. This 'friend' suddenly became quite hostile when Harr's book came out and blamed GK for 'turning' on Grace Co. Additionally, the 'friend' introduced GK to an alleged private investigator linked to a Reading,Mass attorney who later transferred to a Winchester,Mass firm(Winchester was impacted by the Aberjona River) friend ostensibly to help GK figure out what was going on. This investigator it was later learned had ties to a private school in Woburn taught by a nun probably linked to the boy. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars This book is useless
I would give this book negative five stars. However I am not allowed to. Don't waste your money in such an incomplete book unless you want to purchase a very expensive paper weight. This book is GARBAGE.

2-0 out of 5 stars Recommend another book for novice
Dear fellow readers:
I borrowed this book from a friend, who used it in a university course. It was said that the examples used in this book were not sufficient enough to get the grasp of the concepts. I am sorry to say that this is not the only problem with this book. Although this is very complete book from concept to application point of view, the problem lies with the road the authors have taken to explain those theories. The topics are simply skimmed over and not much elaboration given to both development of the equations and application of those equations. As mentioned above the examples did not clarify my confusion any further. This left me confused and not as clear a picture as I hoped to gather. Perhaps this book is best suited as a reference for a person who is well versed in this topic and not a novice.

4-0 out of 5 stars VG, but get more help!
Very well written and updated, I especially like the way the authors have implemented MATLAB scripts in many of the more advanced matrix methods. BUT, do not use JUST this book, theory is unclear in many cases, and the proof to many of the equations (Vibrations is very math intensive) is brief, too brief in some cases. This book could easily be 200 pages longer. The main advantages of this book are that it covers many topics in advanced vibrations and over 500 end of chapter problems, many of them of higher difficulty. In short, if you already have some skills in Vibrations, this is a great book, but if you're using this text as an Intro to Vibrations, use as backup a friendlier book, such as Steidel's to get revved up. I used 3 sources for my course! By the way, I recommend Schaum's Outline for Mechanical Vibrations, many good examples there.

1-0 out of 5 stars textbook

5-0 out of 5 stars The Definitive Work on Residential Construction
This book shows anyone the technical aspects of home construction in very clear terms. The formulas are excellent for figuring the costs of a project. The format is very simple to learn and the tests at the end of each chapter summarize the material well.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good for students, but....
The previous editions of this book contained a lot of reference information and illustrations for both novice and experienced home carpenter. This edition has changed the emphasis to students primarily, with larger type but less specific reference material such as hanging doors, special framing problems, etc. Disappointing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Carpentry And Building Construction (hardcover)
This is *the* book, wheither you are a novice or a master carpenter! It contains plenty of helpful and informative charts, diagrams, pictures and examples - how to calculate materials and costs, board feet, compares different materials and specifies the applications. 5-0 out of 5 stars 49 states are now adopting this Code
Better learn this code. Local codes are being swept away by one standard. Here is Colorado each town had its own test, amendments and licensing system. California is the only state, having revamped its code 2 years ago, to keep its system.
I finish basements, often for homeowners who think they can do it. From Loveland, I can work any city without irate inspectors wondering why I don't know their specific requirements. Good book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely marvelous
The strongest point in favor of this book is the fact that authors seems to have taken an effort to see the problems from students viewpoint: i.e. from a viewpoint of a person who does not know Numerical Methods and want to learn them without facing unnecessary complications. Topics are comprehensive and clear. Excellent resource for students at undergraduate or graduate level. No wonder it won ASEE Meriam/Wiley award. Highly recommended. (NOTE: As with the case with many textbook readers, I did not read the book cover-to-cover. The review is based on a few sections that I read. )

4-0 out of 5 stars Brighten the darkness
This is the book that I used when I first time learning numerical methods. It has very clear explanations which could open my eyes, brighten the darkness of my numerical knowledge. Now I am using it as a textbook for numerical class that I teach. Highly recommended for the beginners.

3-0 out of 5 stars A good book for a novice soils engineer
Reasonably well rounded book (at a reasonably good price!) illustrating the practical aspects of geotechnical engineering. Concepts are explained in good detail and solved problems are helpful in promoting understanding. Essentially, a good book to start out your tech library, but too general in nature to be considered for a "reference text". For that, you might rely on books by Terzaghi, Peck, Thornburn, Bowles, Fang, etc.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for the PE
I took this book in with me for the PE exam and it helped me get about 10 problems right. There are tons of examples and problems with solutions in this book. I regret not taking the geotechnical section of the PE exam.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Author Responds
What divergent opinions !! Naturally I think the book is loaded with practical geotechnical information, including tons of solved problems. Give the book a chance and decide for yourself. Many thanks to my supporters....

1-0 out of 5 stars Not worth the money!
The book is too oriented to domestic US soils, and the aproach is superficial and over-simplified. The amount of useful information is less than 5% of the huge size of the volume. Really a waste of money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Useful
I have examined the book and find it to be an excellent book for learning the practical aspects of geotechnical engineering. The author is uptodate and thorough, yet he explains in a very down-to-earth style, by photographs and numerical examples, some very real engineering problems a geotechnical engineer is likely to face in practice. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Still the best Civil Handbook
The fifth edition update mainly reflects changes in code requirements for structural engineering. Other sections seem barely changed from the fourth edition. The water resources chapter has several misprinted tables. Use the corresponding tables out of the fourth edition.

Generalle well-written and easy to follow. Useful as a supplemental study reference for the Civil PE Exam.

Could use a good bibliography.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Review/Reference Book
I'm a senior in CE this year and I have been using the 2nd edition of this book (1976) more or less daily as I work on my senior design projects. Not really in depth on any one subject, but its great if you just need to look up a formula or technique that you forgot from some class. I plan to ask for the new edition as a graduation present.

3-0 out of 5 stars A civil engineer's review - this book is a good buy
The Standard Handbook for Civil Engineers is a comprehensive single volume book. This book is divided into 23 sections covering entire gamut of civil engineering. In first few chapters it deals with design management, specifications etc. These chapters are quite informative. It also describes various construction materials in a lucid form. But the chapter on structural theory should have more elaborately presented. Many aspects of advanced structures such as plate, shell etc. are not discussed. Finite element method is almost untouched. This book does not contain too many numerical examples. Rather it tells you how to take decision. For example, it tells you how to choose structural system for multistory building, but does not tell how to analyze the same. Geo-technical engineering section is also little bit concise. Concrete design section is good but a number of worked out problems would have made it better. Same goes for steel design section. Surveying was featured in very lackadaisically. Building engineering section is well written with very good general descriptions. Transportation, water resource and environment parts are also well covered. Coastal engineering is just touched. In overall this book is a good buy. But this book won't be much useful to all because it is written only in American code. What I dislike most about this book is that it is not written in metric units. ... Read more
