Book Description

Master the fundamental concepts of real-time embedded system programming and jumpstart your embedded projects with effective design and implementation practices. This book bridges the gap between higher-level abstract modeling concepts and the lower-level programming aspects of embedded systems development. You gain a solid understanding of real-time embedded systems with detailed practical examples and industry wisdom on key concepts, design processes, and the available tools and methods.

Delve into the details of real-time programming so you can develop a working knowledge of the common design patterns and program structures of real-time operating systems (RTOS). The objects and services that are a part of most RTOS kernels are described and real-time system design is explored in detail. You learn how to decompose an application into units and how to combine these units with other objects and services to create standard building blocks. A rich set of ready-to-use, embedded design "building blocks" is also supplied to accelerate your development efforts and increase your productivity.

Experienced developers new to embedded systems and engineering or computer science students will both appreciate the careful balance between theory, illustrations, and practical discussions. Hard-won insights and experiences shed new light on application development, common design problems, and solutions in the embedded space. Technical managers active in software design reviews of real-time embedded systems will find this a valuable reference to the design and implementation phases. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Good Embedded Systems Introduction
I have 2+ years experience in the embedded industry. This book has increased my understanding of embedded systems in both breadth and scope--deepening my knowledge of basic concepts while tying these concepts together to form a more complete picture of embedded system design.

The book flows well. The first chapter flushes out basic definitions of what an embedded system is. I especially enjoyed this introduction as it challenged my understanding of the embedded industry. Chapters 2 and 3 introduce concepts important in the development (from a tool's perspective) and initialization of an embedded system. Chapters 4 through 9 describe the basic objects of a RTOS kernel (e.g. tasks, semaphores, etc.). In addition to introducing these constructs, their proper use in system design is outlined. Chapters 10 through 13 describe RTOS services relating to the underlying hardware, such as exceptions, interrupts and I/O. Common issues and tradeoffs are examined in the design of these services. The last 3 chapters focus on a number of embedded application design and development issues including concurrency optimization guidelines and task synchronization and communication.

The author uses clear, concise, simple language and develops concepts fully before building on them. This is a practical book that I would highly recommend to beginner and intermediate-level professionals in the industry.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Overview of Programming on RTOS Based Systems
This book is an excellent overview of programming on RTOS based systems. It is not a theoretical book at all. The concepts are all there, but it is also very practical. I found a lot of good ideas even though I have been designing embedded systems for many years. I also found it to be an easy read, (but that may be due to my background). It is worth buying for anyone interested in RTOS based systems.

3-0 out of 5 stars A very good and useful book.
This book describes essential RT concepts to developers new to real time. However, an experienced developer is likely to pick up new information especially with regard to details they did not know.

There were a few places where I feel the authors could have expressed themselves more clearly, but I always understood what was conveyed in the end.

2-0 out of 5 stars Too conceptual... difficult to visualize..
From the book titile, I expected to learn real time programming concept, architecture without using RTOS. Unfortunately, I think, "Concept of RTOS" should be a more appropriate than "Real-Time Concepts.." as in the book title. This book doesnt help much if you are not into RTOS.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must for Beginners, and Worth It For Hot Shots Too
When I first started reading this work, it seemed decidedly to be for beginners only. I was pleasantly surprised however, how many new concepts and ideas I learned by the time I completed it. I found the "points to remember" and Chapters 11, 13-16 to be particularly useful because they highlight the pitfalls that I've seen even the most seasoned RTOSers fall into. I ended up buying the book for all my firmware developers and made the above mentioned sections mandatory reading for them. Although I have read several books on real time this is definitely the most complete because it references the real time concepts in the context of a real live OS - VxWorx. The information is presented in such a way that it can easily be applied to any RTOS such as QNX, InTime, MsCE, and MuOS. All my firmware new hires are given this book on the first day of work, and they can't start coding until they've finished it. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Very Young Field
Is Nanotech just more hype? Blue sky research with no practical products in sight?

This book hopes to dispell that by presenting a solid survey of the field. It does require a fairly high technical level in the reader, concentrated in engineering. This may be a good sign. Things are not relegated to pure research. Indeed, several chapters discuss possible biotech and molecular electronics applications. Though you should be warned that these might be harder to build than expressed in the confident tone of some authors.

Some readers may see parallels to a description of the semiconductor industry circa 1955, when some devices had been built, but the full potential was only just being suspected. If so, perhaps all the more reason for you to go into nanotech, using this book as one of your guides. ... Read more

Looking to train our user base as part of our V8 migration, we conducted a quick study of the available published books on V8. Bentley's own supplied course material are fine as workbooks, but not much use otherwise and no doubt are gathering dust on many shelves the world over.

Having compared _Harnessing MicroStation_ to _Inside MicroStation_ (by Frank Conforti) we eventually decided to purchase this book in bulk for our students.

In spite of annoyances (like the awful typography and relative lack of reader-friendly illustrations) this is a book which is much more thorough in its treatment of Bentley's flagship new version, and will be of better long-term value to CAD professionals. ... Read more

Book Description

In the tradition of Being Digital and The Tipping Point, Steven Johnson, acclaimed as a "cultural critic with a poet's heart" (The Village Voice), takes readers on an eye-opening journey through emergence theory and its applications. Explaining why the whole is sometimes smarter than the sum of its parts, Johnson presents surprising examples of feedback, self-organization, and adaptive learning. How does a lively neighborhood evolve out of a disconnected group of shopkeepers, bartenders, and real estate developers? How does a media event take on a life of its own? How will new software programs create an intelligent World Wide Web?

In the coming years, the power of self-organization -- coupled with the connective technology of the Internet -- will usher in a revolution every bit as significant as the introduction of electricity. Provocative and engaging, Emergence puts you on the front lines of this exciting upheaval in science and thought. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good introduction, with serious flaws
This book provides a good introduction to the new field of emergence, the study of how complex, apparently "organized" global behaviors arise from the interaction of many autonomous parts operating locally without central control. Steven Johnson explains the principles and brings together many examples from biology (ants, slime molds, neurons) and other areas (games, software, the growth of cities).

Unfortunately, Johnson has not made the effort to study his field thoroughly. He is very familiar with game software (e.g., SimCity), but I was shocked to find no mention of the first analysis of emergent behavior. In his classic "The Wealth of Nations" (1776), Adam Smith coined the term "the invisible hand" to describe the seemingly orchestrated order that emerges from the actions of individuals looking for things they need in a free marketplace. Smith's analysis, by the way, is both detailed and profound--a must for anyone interested in the topic of emergence.

Also, Johnson seems to wander from his central topic at times, for example in the chapter on mind reading.

Despite its gaps and occasional lapses, the book is definitely worth reading. The field is important both socially (do we need a centrally-run society or will the invisible hand work?) and technically. Johnson has done a good job of introducing it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Intriguing. Full of lots of provocative concepts.
Emergence: the Connected Lives of Ants, Brains, Cities and Software by Steven Johnson is a compelling argument for higher order emergence from aggregates of lower order units. Like Stuart Kaufman's works on self organizing criticality-though a lot more easily understood than the latter- Johnson's discourse points out that order can be produced from apparent chaos when "rules" are in place and when some critical number of individuals interact with one another following these rules.

Probably one of the more interesting living systems the author discusses is the slime mold, that unique creature whose cells can act autonomously as individuals or collectively as a unified whole. I'd heard of this phenomenon before, but at that time no underlying cause was given. Johnson notes that their inherently human hierarchical point of view had led researchers to look for pacemaker cells that dictated when, where, and under what conditions cells would form a collective. After years of looking, it became obvious that either no such cells existed or they were very subtly distinguished from the others. According to the author, recent research suggests a more bottom up organization, with individual cells making local decisions about the need to collectivize and using pheromone trails to attract others to them.

Interesting too were the descriptions of emergent systems arising unconsciously from human interactions. The reader interested in modern social problems might benefit from the author's discussion of current top down changes in city organization and urban design. The anthropologist or student of mind/brain research might find his discussion of the rise in human awareness and the concept of self through so-called "mind reading" of interest.

For myself, as a student of history, I enjoyed some of his perspectives on the rise of cities, "Cities have a latent purpose as well [as a manifest purpose] to function as information storage and retrieval devices....Ideas and goods flow readily within these clusters, leading to productive cross-pollination, ensuring that good ideas don't die out in rural isolation....And the extraordinary thing again is that this learning emerges without anyone even being aware of it (p. 108-109)."

The changes that have occurred because of the feedback systems of the internet and the cable industry are also intriguing. Although like many people I've surfed the website, received my "suggestions" for potential purchases, expressed my likes and dislikes of the various books I've read, voted for reviewers whose critiques have help my decisions, and in short become part of a community of similarly minded people, I've not thought about the overall impact that this type of system creates as it spreads to other situations. Johnson makes some very interesting points regarding a bottom up movement in politics and the media and the loss of control by hierarchies. Unconnected, the individual makes little difference, but connected to others of like mind by way of the internet and feed back loops, the collective has power to change a great deal.

Probably the most important point Johnson makes is that much of what arises from this higher order emergence is unpredictable. It might be "good" or "bad" from the point of view of a single unit. As with evolution-one of those situations where this type of action is seen-other types of emergence depend upon random decisions and actions of large numbers of individual units, be they ants, software Sims characters, or cities. One can predict that at some critical number of units the system will go through a "phase transition," suddenly becoming something else. Just what else and what impact that change will have on any one individual is impossible to predict.

Intriguing. Full of lots of provocative concepts.

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible
The best-spent $10 or so of my life. Seriously.
If you are a Software Engineer, or a "Computer Scientist", or you live your life online, you cannot afford to ignore this work, period.
An incredibly lucid, enthralling, and accessible explanation of emergent behavior, swarm intelligence, and self-organizing systems, this book will change the way you think about the Internet, video games, the media, and life, both complex and "simple."
Johnson shows the big picture, where Google fits into the picture, and why Slashdot, Alexa, EBay, and Amazon are significant, in terms of the evolution of the web.
I now truly understand why, while AI is practical (and more pervasive than we realize), artificial sentience is not, and may be impossible altogether. For that matter, I now understand what sentience really is.

If software of any kind is of interest to you (or even if it is not), do yourself a favor and let Mr. Johnson show you where it is headed.

4-0 out of 5 stars Making scientific mountains out of ant hills.
"Call it swarm logic" (p. 74). In his fascinating examination of slime molds, ant colonies, cells, cities, and computer software, Steven Johnson (MIND WIDE OPEN) introduces his reader to the cutting-edge theory of emergence in his 2001 book. He simplifies this complex field of research initiated in the mideighties (p. 85) through example and analogy. Examining ants, for example, Johnson demontrates how these unintelligent insects, "which dominate the planet in a way that makes human populations look like an evolutionary afterthought" (p. 73), organize into complex colonies that adapt in size and behavior to their environment as a single entity, thereby exhibiting a spontaneous and collective intelligence. Johnson then reveals that what connects ant colonies with slime mold, computer games, other living ecologies, the guild system of twelfth-century Florence, cell divisions, and software "is a recurring pattern and shape: a network of self-organization, of disparate agents that unwittingly create a higher-level order" (p. 21). "Just like the clock maker metaphors of the Enlightenment, or the dialectical logic of the nineteenth century," Johnson writes, "the emergent worldview belongs to this moment in time" (p. 56). Although this book may lack depth and detail at times, it is nevertheless an excellent starting point for readers (like me) interested in exploring this revolutionary scientific theory.

3-0 out of 5 stars The Darwin myth in search of a theory
Comparable to Kevin Kelly's Out of Control, although without that book's honesty in pointing out the limits of Darwin's theory before beginning, this work plies the Great Postdarwinian Hope that complexity theory will come to the rescue of the biology scandal, viz. Darwin's theory doesn't do it. If it did, what would be the point of these books? Much of the material is not without interest, but it is all a fishing expedition, and the minnows won't bite. The problem here is that the higher systems we see in history and culture simply won't yield to reductionist derivatives of current science.
The idea of emergence is a good one. Check out the historical data of the so-called Axial Age. We have emergence right under our noses in world history, all we have to do is study it. But the great taboo is that we can't do that, because we have to stay confused. I guess it is not time for a paradigm shift, and this type of theory junk is the bone du jour for chewing on til when. ... Read more

To date, this is THE book to get in the field. If you get any book on the subject, this is it. I was only mildly surprised after reading through much of it to find that it's the only textbook in my graduate class on wetland ecology and management and there appears to be no competition as a textbook.

In short, it's very readable and immensely useful: A combination you can't go wrong with.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Resource on Wetland Sciences!
This resource would be considered the "Bible" of wetland sciences. It is highly valuable for understanding the ecological systems involved in a wetland. A must for wetland regulators, scientists, and just interested people!

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely useful
Mitsch and Gosselink have written an excellent text/reference book on wetland ecology and management. The book is perfect as a text for a wetlands ecology course in upper level or graduate courses. I use it as a reference that I pull from the shelf again and again. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't adapt for your course
The book is very shallow and not worth considering for any engineering or any technical degree. it might be good for high school level pre-engineering classes, but difinetly not at college or university level.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bob Mott knows how to teach.
This is a great text for technology based fluid mechanics. To elementary for an engineering student, but then it was meant for an engineering technology student. I find it easy to use. My students love it. There are few, if any, technology based fluid mechanics texts available of this caliber. I only wish it were less expensive.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best text I've had the pleasure to read, helpful examples
I am the type of person who generally hates the way that texts are written. I have always said, that if I were to write a text, it would be this way. The whole class talks about this book, we love it at at the University here. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource for the PE EXAM
Norton is an awesome resource. For students going to college it may seem overwhelming. But it is the MOST up to date text on the market on the subject of Machine Design. While taking the PE exam I compared Shigley vs Norton on information, and Norton had all the answers. The author has done a monumental job in bringing the vast spectrum of Machine Design in a very well composed book. I have yet to come across a resource like Norton. In fact, I recommend this book to practicing engineers. Almost every section of the book has real world value. Its worth having on the shelf. I was always into Shigley but Norton is more in line with industry practice as opposed to academic excercises as presented by Shigley.

3-0 out of 5 stars Why buy this when you can buy Shigley?
This text would be OK if there were no other sources on the subject of mechanical design. However, there are! There is a reason that Shigley wrote a professional standard and Norton did not. It has all the details but there are proof-reading and similar errors.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's really a great book...
If you really want to learn and understand mechanical design, Mr. Norton is generous, he teachs everything there is to know. The chapters introduction it's something beyond you can expect from an engineering book. You must have it...

2-0 out of 5 stars not well organized
As a student trying to learn the art of machine design I found that this book was rather unorganized and it wasn't until I had read it and studied the pages time and time again that the principals really became clear.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent procedure, theory and examples.
The book has excellent procedure and theory development and explanation. The end of the chapter problems need extreme help. The questions are redundant, unclear, and are built upon from answers of previous chapter problems, sometimes requiring answering a question from chapters 2, 4, 5, and 6 to get a final answer in a chapter 7 question. Many answers in the back of the book are incorrect, about (50%). Looks like Norton had his TA do his problems. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars ChE's couldn't survive without this book!
This book is known as "BSL" on the University of Wisconsin - Madison engineering campus for its renowned authors and UW-Madison Professors: Bird, Stewart and Lightfoot. I was lucky enough to have ChE 320: Transport Phenomena, with Prof. Stewart in the late 80's and this book helped me through the class. To this day, I still use my copy.

5-0 out of 5 stars It is commonly known as the bible of transport phenomena.
The book gives a very in depth look at transport phenomena. A reader who understands this information will have no trouble at simpler subjects such as mass and heat transfer. A must for Chemical Engineers but would recommend the use of a good professor.

2-0 out of 5 stars They must've gotten too Old
While the first edition was the seminal standard, I don't see how the second edition can be considered the same. First of all just look at the back cover, that's glaring. The numeraters and denomenaters in the differential expressions are reversed from what they should be. Then on page 15 the data given for viscosity of water, the columns for dynamic viscosity in mPa-s and kinematic viscosity in cm2/sec are interchanged with each other from what would be correct. Such things make me hesitant to trust any of the rest of this text.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece
I first used BS&L over 30 years ago for my first Transport classes in Chemical Engineering. It's depth and breadth is such that it was a primary text for four other courses I took later in grad school. I pulled the book out a couple of days ago to review my understanding of heat transfer to help explain it to some youngsters.

To those who complain that it has too much math...take up a new field. Math and science are inextricably linked. Science isn't just your high school teacher babbling about ecology and the "circle of life". This is hard science, the kind that builds nations and brings societies out of disease-infested environments. If you're using this text and can't take the heat, better get out of the kitchen.

5-0 out of 5 stars a surprise may await you !
I am very pleased with the content of the book - it is a classic. However, there's more to the package. First of all, I was surprised to receive the book from a bookstore in Taiwan, although Amazon never lead me to believe it would come form abroad. Second, the book had a large stamp on it saying "not for sale in the US". This, in itself, has to be illegal. Third, a page feel out of the book right away - although it said "printed in the US", it clearly was NOT US quality. So much for outsourcing! So, buyer beware - you really don't know what you'll get in the mail !!!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A terrific training tool
I have reviewed probably 20 books on basic plumbing for use in my company's training program for plumbers. Black and Decker's Complete Guide to Home Plumbing is by far the best. The photos are what really swung me in B&D's favor. Many other books have sketches but, next to having the fixture at hand or maybe crawling under the house, the photos in this book are the best way to orient and familiarize one with plumbing tech. Our plumbers have actually looked at a problem, excused themselves while they went out to the truck to "get a tool," and returned in 5 minutes after studying the appropriate pages and handled the problem successfully. Next time you pay a plumber $185 to fix a leaky faucet, think about getting this book and D.I.Y.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good pick
I bought this book because Black and Decker's guide to electrical work was excellent. The plumbing version is good too, but would have benefited from more detail and basic information for beginners. This book has excellent pictures, a variety of types of projects and repairs, and generally good descriptions and instructions. I learned quite a bit from reading this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Most projects well covered
This book is well written and certainly well presented, with excellent pictures to illustrate the task at hand.

Its comprehensive on the topic of home plumbing with many tasks covered.

I doubt whether there is a better and more up to date publication.

However some constructive criticism; I would have appreciated more technical information at times. There was no reason as to why certain pipes or fixtures were used instead of others, whether it was in the code or the author had the experience to know, you had to accept it on blind faith.
So I often thought when doing a certain project, "why did they choose these products and methods."

Also there is very little on the subject of Gas plumbing except the installation of a Gas hot water tank.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book, BUT...
The Black and Decker line of repair and home improvement books are clearly one, if not, thee best I have ever seen. Their illustrations and attention to detail are far better than the other name brand books. I am actually very surprised to the amount of work they must have gone through to get some of the shots they show. I have both the plumbing and wiring book and find/found them very useful for even the biggest of jobs. My only complaint with this particular book was the lack of detail on sizing and layout of supply and waste pipes for new installations. They have some good tables and cover some issues with code, but there are many fine details involving UPC and IRC standards, as well as many tricks and do's and don'ts in the trade that I would like to see covered. In other words, you'll need more data if you plan on getting a permit and passing inspection. Perhaps a well drawn out 2-story plan, noting why each pipe was placed and sized as such, for optimal service, would make this book outstanding. In either case, it's still one of the best book out there. Check out the "Code Check" flip references by Taunton Press for the fine details to compliment this book. Hope this helps.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Every Homeowner Plumbing Reference
This manual is made for existing homes and the homeowner who wishes to understand plumbing and handle his own projects. Jobs which may seem daunting for those without trade skills are made very manageable by excellent text and photographs. The biggest restraint in keeping homeowners from saving money and doing their own work is fear of making mistakes. The book dispells the fear! The book covers simple skills such as replacing faucets to more major jobs like replacing water heaters or adding new plumbing lines and facilities. I compared this book with three others before purchasing and feel the few extra dollars worth it. ... Read more
