5-0 out of 5 stars A joy to read and learn from
Well written and thought out, following a logical procession through the various components and systems. A bare minimum of errors in the text. This book should be valuable in preparation for PE licensure. I wish all texts were written like this.

5-0 out of 5 stars An engineer's review
The book was very useful. The only drawback was the "Hydronics Design Kit" was not included. This costs an additional $76 from Oikos.com and is referred to many times in the book. Therefore, it is almost a requirement during use of the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars good stuff

5-0 out of 5 stars The Surveyor's Bible
While preparing for my licensing exam, I read this book from cover to cover. It addresses every principle of retracement (sequential and simultaneous conveyances), public lands, and riparian issues thoroughly. The highlighted "principle" at the heading of each new topic makes remembering the main points simple. I can honestly say that every question on the NCEES exam that dealt with general principles and practice was answered in this book. I passed on my first sitting, and this book was one of the main reasons why. If you can only study one reference, this is it. Every practicing surveyor should also refer to it regularly.

Wow! An all in one book for the small to medium size construction business. What an excellent resource which is easy to set up and use! And it is great getting this from another builder who has tested these materials in the industry, and not some legal document writer who's just trying to sell a book! Way to go AL Trellis!

5-0 out of 5 stars Found exactly what I couldn't find elsewhere
I run a Real Estate firm dealing with new homes only. I needed to develop a tracking and building method for my onsite realtors to manage custom constrution. This is the only source I've been able to find that gave me a model to use for custom management. The local library carries one as a reference manual, and I looked at it BEFORE purchasing. Great manual!

2-0 out of 5 stars paper wasted sip book
Author is really good but the way SIP described in the book is a kind of child-story , details on important parts of SIP and on unified services are skipped instead make-up parts are highlighted.

3-0 out of 5 stars Skip the first half
I found this book covered too many points on the spectrum. The first half goes over everything BUT SIP. Most people who want to learn the generic SIP structure already know how a simple telephone and data network operates.

This takes a little too long to get the the "meat" but from there on gives a pretty good detail of the SIP format for anyone looking at understanding the basic SIP code format.

As a fundamentals book for anyone wanting to start learning SIP programming it would be a good reference to have on the shelf. Skip the first half though.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best SIP book for beginners
This is the best book for who wants to know about SIP initially, especially on what SIP can do conceptually. This book is feasible for everyone that includes executives, managers and engineers. This book also provides very good related information in the Internet Forum.

5-0 out of 5 stars My best book to understand SIP
SIP Demystified covers not only SIP protocol itself but also why SIP is so good in Internet world. That would help us to understand SIP so much. Especially, this book is recommended to, like me, those who are moving from switched voice into a data networking environment as editorial reviewer says.
I hope that SIP Demystified will be translated into Japanese soon for my colleagues or friends.

5-0 out of 5 stars Authoritative reference for airport planners and designers
When two airport experts at MIT get together to produce a textbook, expectations naturally run high. Professors Odoni and de Neufville are no strangers to the team approach, as they co-teach that university's leading airport course. The resulting book reflects their classroom approach: It is comprehensive, methodological, and takes a scientific approach to airport planning. Like their course, the book is also superbly done. In the process, as often happens when science rules over instinct, many myths are shattered and common errors explained. The only drawback is that to fully enjoy the book, a solid mathematical foundation is required. For those who are math averse, however, there is still plenty to learn.

The authors have taken on many challenges in the way the textbook is structured, and successfully so. The textbook is modular, so that chapters are organized into logically separated topics that can serve as stand-alone references. Occasionally, this leads to repetition, but it greatly enhances the book's value as a reference. The authors very nicely combine U.S. and international content. The text spells out when U.S. and international standards are the same and when they differ. It also attempts to explain many of the differences.

One of the core areas of expertise presented in the book is capacity and delay. This is broken down into the topics of capacity, delay, demand management (both administrative and economic), and air traffic control (Chapters 10 through 13). This is supplemented by additional reference material, for example in the areas of queuing theory and on how to define the design peak hour for passenger terminal planning. All in all, roughly a quarter of the book focuses on capacity and delay.

The book has a few limitations: Many of the colorful anecdotes lack sources, which is unfortunate for the reader who wants to delve into the original material to learn more. This is understandable from the point of view that many of these anecdotes describe costly mistakes carried out by short sighted airport designers. Another, albeit minor, limitation is that many of the examples are taken from Logan International Airport in Boston. This is to be expected based on the authors' location. There are however, many other examples, from all continents. Finally, there are a few areas where the reader may crave more information, notably wildlife management, control of obstructions, and airport noise access restrictions in the post-Airport Noise and Capacity Act of 1990 environment.

None of these limitations seriously detracted from my enjoyment of the book. Where this book really excels is in its ability to break down the most difficult challenges facing airport planners into clearly reasoned analytical methods. This should help decision makers avoid expensive errors and provide a rationale for decisions that are otherwise driven by either instinct or politics.

It is obvious that this will become a standard reference for airport planners, designers, and managers alike. Even experts with many years of experience in the field will learn something new and have their preconceptions challenged. New students who are just entering the field are fortunate to have this text as their guide. Through this book, the authors have considerably broadened their audience from their MIT classroom, and carry on a tradition of sharing superb insights into the problems of airport planning and design.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not a good text
This book in my opinion is not the one to enjoy the beauty of the subject and mechanics in general. There is a vast amount of material amassed but the structure of the book is poor.
It seems being overburden with details and particulars and lacking unified clear consistent approach. In addition some mistakes are just plain annoying. If one wants to be serious about vibrations - do not sweat over this book. It can be just another somewhat usefull reference book to find some particular solution to for some particular problem.
Instead one can study mechanics with beautifully written classical L.Meirovitch, "Fundamentals of Vibrations" which is much more original, rigorous, clear, usefull and serious book to have.

2-0 out of 5 stars Poor Book
I used this textbook for my Mechanical Vibrations course and was very displeased with it. My biggest gripe is the lack of examples in each chapter. There are an abundance of homework problems at the end of each chapter, but the vast majority of them are not illustrated at all in example problems. I noticed this immediately in Chapter 1 when attempting to solve several of the problems. The text also develops equations and formulas without detail and explanation. Luckily my teacher developed the eqations in class lecture and provided the majority of information for the course. While working out homework and test problems that were assigned, the book was of little use for me. I think the clarity of writing could be better, as well. By the way, I got an A in the course and still found the book to be poor.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not Happy Teaching From This Text
I recently used this as a text to teach Vibrations to Mechanical Engineering seniors after Vibration Analysis by Vierck went out of print. I was attracted to Rao's book because much of the presentation is similar to Vierck. After using this text for one semester, I was not satisfied. I was particularly concerned by Chapter 2 where the fundamentals of damped single degree of freedom systems are covered. This Chapter is critical to building the foundation of Vibration Theory and I was disturbed to find that two critical plots, the time history comparison of responses with various damping levels and the phase plane plot for the same cases were seriously incorrect. While errors always can be found in texts, these plots were so obviously wrong at first glance that I wondered how a book with 29 reviewers (as listed in the Acknowledgements) has such glaring errors. As I progressed through the text I found a number of other errors including incorrect equations in some places. I also found that some material, emphasized in Vierck, that I consider important was buried in the worked examples rather than being emphasized as part of the book's text. While the book does present a lot of material and gives some interesting problems, I found that I was not comfortable with the text at the end of the course. I have since decided to drop this book from consideration as our text.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very happy with the book.
This text was used during my senior year for two consecutive mechanical engineering courses I had at Penn State. I found the presentation of the material very thorough and logically ordered. My only issue with the book was when we dug into the first chapter. I was a bit overwhelmed because, although the first chapter is just an overview of vibration, it is very broad, yet detailed. All subsequent chapters were very well focused, easy to follow, and illustrative of important concepts.

I put the book away after graduation, but soon got it out again, finding that it is a wonderful tool in the field... definitely worth it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Very good for majoring in vobration engineering
This book is very useful for me.

So, helpful my research topic.

It is containing basic of mechanical vibration.

Book Description

Passive solar heating and passive cooling—approaches known as natural conditioning—provide comfort throughout the year by reducing, or eliminating, the need for fossil fuel. Yet while heat from sunlight and ventilation from breezes is free for the taking, few modern architects or builders really understand the principles involved.

Now Dan Chiras, author of the popular book "The Natural House," brings those principles up to date for a new generation of solar enthusiasts.

In "The Solar House," Chiras sets the record straight on the vast potential for passive heating and cooling. Acknowledging the good intentions of misguided solar designers in the past, he highlights certain egregious erros and shows how to avoid them. More importantly, Chiras explains in methodical detail how today’s home builders can succeed with solar designs.

Readers will learn:
- How to select a cost-effective, energy-efficient, and environmentally friendly backup heating system.
- how to preserve indoor air quality in an airtight, energy-efficient home.
- ways of employing green building materials in a naturally conditioned home. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Thorough, concise, and up-to-date info for solar designs
I have spent a lot of time researching passive solar designs using books from the library & information on the internet. A lot of books on solar designs are from the 70's & 80's and the designs lead to overheating of homes by overglazing (too many windows). Some of the more current books on solar design gave more vague information, and didn't thoroughly describe concepts and materials.

This book has it all! Very good information on all the design elements, such as direction of home, foundation designs, window ratios, as well as recommendations for particular products. The book had in-depth information on all the available heating systems including solar heating, heat pumps, & radiant floor heating. At the end of the description for each heating system, there was a pro/con list that talked about the energy effiency, cost, & performance of each heating system over others . There was a helpful chart on hot water heaters with payback periods for different fuels (solar, electric, gas, propane) so you could compare the costs associated with the fuel. In all of my research, this was the first such chart that really spelled out the benefits of certain fuels over others. The book was written in 2002, so it is very up-to-date with the most current products & concepts.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read book!
The Solar House by Dan Chiras is a masterpiece. Chiras' inimitable style shows through on every page. Like his other books, the writing is clear and engaging. The book is well organized and full of useful information. It is an absolute delight to read.

Most books on passive solar tend to ignore or give superficial treatment to several vital subjects, for example, passive cooling, region-specific design, indoor air quality, and back-up heating systems. And many books still propagate some pretty bad designs. Not this one!

The Solar House covers passive solar design and construction in great detail, drawing on modern science and architecture, yet is easy to read and understand. Not only will you find just about everything you need to know about designing an energy-efficient solar home, you will learn about common mistakes still being made by some designers -- and ways to avoid them! It could save you a fortune on construction and heating and cooling costs.

This book is useful to architects and owner-builders. Even if you have read other books on the subject, you owe it to yourself to add this book to your library. It's worth its weight in gold.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent guide for embracing ecology-friendly living
The Solar House: Passive Heating And Cooling by global environmental issues expert Daniel D. Chiras is an "user friendly" architectural guide to choosing and implementing an energy-efficient and environmentally friendly backup heating system, and thereby making any dwelling both cost-effective and naturally heated and/or air conditioned. Black-and-white sketches clearly illustrate the detailed walk-throughs about the basics of passive solar heating, passive cooling, assessing the performance of one's energy system and much more. An excellent guide for embracing ecology-friendly living, The Solar House is especially recommended as a do-it-yourself home reference for the non-specialist general reader with an interest in making their personal home as comfortable and environmentally friendly as possible.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Brilliantly Simple Solar Design Book
At last -- a comprehensive, easy-to-read, well-illustrated solar house book, perfect for architectural students, build-it-yourselfers and masters of solar technology as well -- who will benefit from the many important lessons learned.

My delight with the book began when I first saw its elegant cover. The more I read, the more I realized what a treasure it is. I was especially interested in the latest information on radiant floor heating, ground source heat pumps, and passive cooling. It makes me feel good to know that a book this full of information, yet so accessible, may result in significant reductions in the 44% of total household energy used for heating and cooling.

Chiras combines several decades of personal experience with information from some of the best minds in the field. His stated goal of producing a comprehensive and accurate book is well met. Nice job -- get a copy! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Power Generation (Selection, Application, Operation)
As a professional I rely on technical sources to meet daily challenges.
The newly acquired "Power Generation" authored by P.Kiameh is a valuable addition to my library and a good starting place in my quest for technical answers.
The well research and equally well-presented material has been a foundation of much valuable information.
Throughout the pages one can see that the author has many years of "hands on" experience, which was accrued, developed and refined on an "operating floor" of a very large generating facility. As a result the information presented is accurate, practical and proven.

This Handbook is a must for every professional.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for practical applications
I bought this book hoping to learn DOE using Taguchi Methods and apply what I learned to real life problems in my work. It was very helpful. Not only did it help me learn the methods I needed to perform my testing at work but I did it in only 8 days of reading. The book was very easy to read and the examples helped me understand everything I needed to know to apply this method to real situations. A great buy for anyone looking to learn Taguchi Methods.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Introduction to More Effective Experimentation
The challenge that all research directors and senior scientists face is that virtually all scientists are originally trained to believe that the only proper way to conduct an experiment is to vary only one factor at a time while holding all other variables fixed. This belief, which can be shown mathematically to be totally incorrect, has been a drag on the scientific community for decades, causing experimental science to be much less productive than it should be. In fact, by properly designing experiments in which several factors are varied in a carefully thought out, predetermined pattern, much more information can be obtained with far fewer experiments.

What Dr. Roy has achieved in his book on experimental design is to clearly explain why this is so and to provide the tools which allows his readers to overcome their ingrained beliefs and adopt a more effective method of designing their own experimental programs.

Of particular interest is his discussion of experimental design using orthogonal arrays (Chapter 4) for it is in this part of the book that the full power of modern approaches to experimentation become most evident. Here, he illustrates how a set of as few as eight experiments can be used to determine how three presumable independent factors, such as time, temperature and concentration, can be studied to obtain detailed information not only on how each factor individually effects the quality of the final product, but also on the extent to which the factors interact.

Historically, learning this type of technique for designing experiments has been a daunting task since somewhat tedious mathematically manipulations are required for both the design of the experiment and the analyses of the resulting data. However, included with Dr. Roy's book is complete software which eliminates the need for the experimenter to either manually solve the handful of equations needed to extract the results in useful form, or to develop custom spreadsheets in an attempt to automate the process. The software is easy to use and includes all of the tables and data which are used in the book to illustrate the principles of experimental design. The software is also capable of assisting the experimenter in designing sets of up to eight concurrent experiments, rapidly analyzing the data and generating graphical and tabular presentations which greatly aid in the interpretation of the results.

This is an extremely useful book which can have a major beneficial effect on the productivity of any laboratory engaged in experimental process research such as crystal growth, chemical synthesis or manufacturing. By allowing the reader to overcome his innate aversion to varying more than one experimental factor at a time, the book makes it possible for the reader to become a much more productive scientist or engineer and become a role model for his coworkers to emulate.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must have for Quality Control Professionals and Educators
First, I completely agree with all the good things mentioned in the other reviews, but wish to add the following comments:

1. The discussion group (usenet) hosted by Dr Roy is fantastic. If by chance you don't "get it" from reading the book, a simple question posted to the usenet frequently gets you an answer, often within a few hours (its a vocal crowd!!). Many times, the author himself responds to usenet questions. And, on at least one instance, after I repeatdly asked my question, he began exchanging emails with me, which then led to some pleasant phone disscussions.

2. User friendly software and support. See above.

3. Taguichi is frequently attacked by full blown Design of Experiments statistical types who miss the whole point. I strongly encourage all professionals interested in gauging quality control to try out his books and the free software downloads....

An excellent book with powerful software and support......

Reads like a winner, looks like a winner, performs likes a winner....... need I say more...

Dr.Roy's book is amazing. He has covered almost everything you need to know about the Taguchi method - even meticulous things. This book will suite both for beginners as well as for experts. The CD which comes along with this book is very helpful in understanding the concept behind the analysis with more than 50 examples. If at all you are looking for a book about Taguchi design of Experiments - I highly recommend one and all to buy Dr.Roy's book and benefit through his work.
I started as a beginner and now Iam an expert in Taguchi analysis - and the credit goes to Dr.Roy - he also helps personally in answering your questions.
Thank you very much Dr.Roy.
Three CHEERS to Dr.Roy!

3-0 out of 5 stars Brief review of DOE using Taguchi approach by R. Roy
Dr. Roy has been able to translate into everyday language some of the most difficult concepts of the Taguchi methodology. Whereas the book does not provide the reader with much theoretical background, it doeas provide ample examples and practical approaches to the methodology. Excellent sections are the discussions about the OAs and the modified arrays as well as the ANOVA. The references to the CD ROM are well placed.

The shortcomings of the book are the very poor screens from the software package. In fact, in some cases they are unreadable. Another shortcoming is the absence of any discussion of tolerance design using the Taguchi methodology.

Overall: a good book for reference. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent introductory book
This book explains the fundamentals of structural analysis (mainly statically determinate structures) and then goes on to the design fundamentals for different materials (wood, steel, concrete and masonry) followed by the design of the structural system for a building. I first used an earlier edition of this book when studying for my undergraduate degree as an introductory book before reading the course texts. The present edition maintains the "easy to understand" explanations of the earlier edition while adding new materials, expanding other sections and updating the design methods in line with the building codes. Emphasis is placed on understanding, the explanations given are very clear and there are numerous worked examples to illustrate the principles. The book is excellent for the beginner first getting used to structural analysis and design or for the practising engineer who has not touched structures for a while and wants to refresh his memory. However this book is only the first step and the undergraduate or practising engineer would do well to follow up on this with other more specialised books like Wang and Salmon's "Reinforced Concrete Design", Salmon and Johnson's "Steel structures: Design and behaviour", or Halperin and Bible's "Principles of Timber Design for Architects and Builders". ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great teacher
While I was studying Interior Design at Parsons a number of years ago, I had Gary Gordon as a Lighting Design Instructor. He was by far one the best teachers that I had. He is very knowledgeable and has the unique ability to easily communicate the many aspects of both design and lighting. I highly recommend any publication he has authored.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good book for novices.
The book begins with an inspirational and somewhat simplistic insight into lighting design. Simply as a study of lighting contrasts. While this is a very important aspect of LD, it is by far one of many concepts a professional must use. The book refers to many technical aspects of lighting without giving any "meat" or more in depth information, which I would have enjoyed. If you are new to LD or are an architect or engineer who has little experience with lighting, it is a very good lauching point. If you are technically knowledgable about lighting and want some inspiration, read chapter 1 and the last chapter on Design for concepts ... Read more
