3-0 out of 5 stars Decent book - many errors
This book is a decent book for those being taking a freshman physics course for non-majors. This is a good supplement to a calculus based physics textbook.

4-0 out of 5 stars typographical errors
it's a good book, it helped a great deal. I wish time was taken to correct typographical errors. I lost valuable time that could have been used to study.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful, recommend
this is a very good book except there are some mistakes(but the mistakes are easily found and corrected by yourself). This book gives you how to attack problems in a very organized manner even though the problems are not so difficult. I came to be able to solve more challenging problems in a different book after solving the easy but organized ones in this book. I recommend this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars This Is The Book If You Need Help with Physics
Beginning with the "How To Use This Book" and "How To Excel in Your Physics Course", (especially the latter) and throughout its pages, this is, without a doubt in this readers opinion, the very best book on the subject I have found to date (And I have many). It puts you through the paces. If you want to know this subject and excel in it, these authors have placed before you the practice you will need. I recommend this book highly for your first experiences in this subject. Starting with the mathematical background required; then on to Classical through Special Relativity. It covers each and every topic, in a clear, concise method that enhances learning and improves retention greatly in each and every area. It's a great reference to have on the shelf. EXCELLENT! My thanks to the authors. Your book has helped me much more than I ever expected.

4-0 out of 5 stars It is a very good book .
It is a very good book but it does not solve complicated problems.Furthermore,it has few mistakes(EX. Pages 88 and 94).In all honesty,it solves the most problems that you will encounter in the freshman physics courses. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Reference book for engineers
This is not an introductory book on heat transfer! Instead it is a thorough treatment on heat transfer in a stringent an extensive manner. This book places greater emphasis on correctness than "easy-to-understand-ness". However, if you do read it, you gain a lot compared to most introductory heat transfer books. If you are interested in forced convection heat transfer, this book gives well documented equations and charts for a great number of shapes, though mostly internal flow. This is a very serious book for serious engineers!

4-0 out of 5 stars A very useful reference
I found very useful the way thermal conductivity was approached. I was used to solve simple problems by means of "Temperature response charts". Now it is possible to use formulas instead of graphs.

A must read for all Chemical and Mechanical engineers. Exhaustice source of information and knowledge ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Terzaghi says it all...
you've got to have this book if you are a geotechnical engineer. terzaghi gives examples from actual projects and presents them clearly. there are solutions to geotechnical problems encountered in the field.

5-0 out of 5 stars Karl Terzaghi is loved
Many have commented on my review below -- most favorably. A few said, it was the second edition of the book they had admired most. Well! that was in 1967. Geotechnical engineering has exploded since then. Today it would be almost impossible for anyone to write a 5-star general purpose book on the subject.

I want to thank you for your kind words and encouragement. I am most grateful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Book of the century
In India people say there is no building like Tajmahal. In civil engineering, I say there is no book like Soil Mechanics in Engineering Practice. Karl Terzaghi, the father of soil mechanics, had a vision, a vision that he lived by, nurtured and preached. Very few have personified Terzaghi's vision better than co-authors, Peck and Mesri.

Permit me to say, no book in this century has had more influence on the rise of civil engineering than has Soil Mechanics in Engineering Practice. Since its first publication in 1948, the book has guided a multitude around the world, spawned countless other books, and set a stage of research for a geotechnical generation gone by, there is, and yet to come.

The library of a geotechnical engineer cannot be said to be complete without a copy of this book. ... Read more

Book Description

Over five hundred simple mechanical movements from America's first one hundred years of the Industrial Revolution. For those who share an interest in mechanical things, this book is addictive. Through the use of simplified, concise drawings, here are 507 of the small components which make up complex machinery in areas as diverse as C.R. Otis's safety stop for the elevator, Pickering's governor for a steam engine, Arnold's escapement for watches, compound parallel rules, piston rod guides, the grasshopper beam engine and a self recording level for surveyors. The list goes on and on in fascinating variety, with each movement explained and illustrated. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money
This book, actually just a collection of poor small line drawings and brief descriptions, is hardly worth anything.

Impressive title though...

5-0 out of 5 stars A relic of another age...
The full title of this book is _Five Hundred and Seven Mechanical Movements, Embracing All Those Which Are Most Important In Dynamics, Hydraulics, Hydrostatics, Pneumatics, Steam Engines, Mill and other Gearing, Presses, Horology, and Miscellaneous Machinery: and including Many Movements Never Before Published and Several Which Have only Recently Come into Use. At least that was the full title of the seventeenth edition of 1893; the book itself dates back to 1868.

This book is a joy to browse though. It is a little gold mine of ideas for the mechanical designer. Yet, anyone with mechanical aptitude should enjoy it. The many crisp line drawings are presented with a minimum of explanation and no dimensioning. You see, it was assumed back in those days that a person with natural mechanical aptitude could look at a diagram, or a machine, and figure it out. Not only that, but it was assumed that once you had the idea, then you could work out all the details for yourself without having to be told everything down to the last screw size. While there is a descriptive paragraph indexed to every drawing, most of the time you don't really need it.

This book comes from an age when engineers and designers had to have the talent and the knowledge to use the mechanical principles of levers, linkages, cams, gears, etc. to produce a given motion- and to link together many such elegant little mechanisms to get a bigger job done- reliably. This isn't done much anymore. Now most machines are huge, cobbled-up, Rube Goldberg devices of pneumatic or hydraulic cylinders, screw actuators, or servo motors- all interconnected by electronic controllers. The whole thing is controlled by software of even more dubious reliability.

Up to the "digital revolution", this book shows how it was always done- it's how I learned it. Of course, once upon a time, a mechanical designer actually had to understand machinery, and the basic principles of physics, and not just how to write code....

5-0 out of 5 stars Five Hundred and Seven Mechanical Movements
Excellent soruce of lots of mechanical ideas. Even though they are from the 1800's, this a wealth of info for engineers and tinkers like me. This helps to understand and lay out simple and complex levers, gearing, and control mechanisms that would be difficult to find anywhere else. A most valuable tool for any engineering/design/shop library!

2-0 out of 5 stars Interesting to read, well "look at", but poor...
This book is interesting, but IMHO, it has too many similar mechanical ideas/pictures and the picure quality is poor. I understand those picture/diagrams are very old, and the printing itself is not the problem, but still, they could resize the diagram little bigger.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exactly what you would expect and worth it!
Perfect for the basement tinkerer. This book may not be as comprehensive in its descriptions as "Ingenious Mechanisms for Designers and Inventors," but it is only 1/20th the price.
The illustrations are simple and easy to understand. Often they show the isolated mechanism or mechanical movement independent of any other components. This is great because sometimes all the extra gobbledygook of a technical schmatic can make understanding things a real chore.
If you're an engineer looking for mathmatical equations and formulas, this book is not going to help. The text is made up of very simple generalizations, such as, "changes rotational motion into reciprocating motion."
Great as brain excercise, great bathroom reader, and economically priced to boot! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Small Barn Plans for Owner-Builders
I found this book to be an excellent source of information. It has greatly helped me do the planning for the construction of my barn.

3-0 out of 5 stars not necessarily what the cover says...
The cover bills it as 'complete' plans for 12 different barns- actually, to get complete plans that would be needed to get building permit do construction or buy materials, you have to order a set form the authors website. The book has nice practical ideas about working with subcontactors, and the designs and sources are quite useful.

5-0 out of 5 stars If only I knew then
If only I knew when I built my barn what the author shares in this book, my life would have been so much easier.

5-0 out of 5 stars Offers cogent step-by-step advice

5-0 out of 5 stars A fantastic refererence for your HVAC/R library
I love the way the author set this book up. You gradually build on what you learn and never really feel that you are being thrown in to hard. The writing is fantastic. Not to difficult in technological terms for the novice and yet levels with the seasoned veteran just right. When you complete a chapter , you are introduced to a " In the field scenario" service call. You imagine yourself at the call working out the problem in the component. You see how to step by step, use the common sense approach to troubleshooting and gain good skills in those procedures. The calls vary from simple to very complex. One thing is for very certain. 5-0 out of 5 stars Best "How-To Manual" I own
This book is a great recource for professional finish carpenters learning the trade. Step by step instructions help simplify common finish carpentry tasks, each section contains a list of man-hours per job to aid in bidding and the book lay out is very friendly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Starting a New Carpentry Business, This Is The Book To Get
I started a new carpentry business a while ago. This book really helped me out. Business wise, from figuring manhours, to giving job estimates and to actualy earning money. Skillfull tips such as scribing a jambless window sill and coping crown moulding. I've read many books on this topic, but I have to say this is one of the "best".

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Business Advice
I am a retired aerospace engineer experiencing a "second life" as a woodworker/carpenter. Of all the finish carpentry books I have looked at, this one is better suited to the person going into the business (I am contemplating it). It offers a decent overview of the range of projects a carpenter will be called upon to do, and serves as a good general reference, though it takes on too wide a scope to go into much detail on all the topics it tackles. However, the last chapter, "Setting Up a Subcontractor Finishwork Business," is worth the cost of the book for someone who wants to learn about contracts, billing, and some of the management issues involved, which may be even more intimidating than the hands-on work. If you really get serious about the business, however, be sure to check out David Gerstel's "Builder's Guide to Running a Successfil Construction Company."

5-0 out of 5 stars The title says it all
This book is outstanding. It has already paid for itself many times over. If you're doing a finish carpentry project or even contracting one out, then this should be required reading.

This is a well-written manual that covers all aspects of finish carpentry including pricing your work. The advice is sound and this book has saved me from making a number of mistakes. The best part is that Mr. Tolpin is a fine writer and he even manages to make this an interesting read.

If you're interested in finish carpentry this is a great book for you. I read this book while a contractor was building a house for me -- I learned enough to get him to correct some framing and drywall problems that would have hurt me later. I also learned what to do before the drywall went on to save myself time when I added the chair and crown moldings.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finish Carpenter's Manual by Jim Tolpin
This is the finest "how to" book that I have ever read, regardless of the subject matter or discipline covered. It pre-supposes nothing on the part of the reader; it explains all techincal terms and techiniques that are introduced into any discussion be it simple base moldings or figuring return cuts for window aprons. Most importantly, everything presented is useful to the average woodworker or wannabe woodworker with average talent but above average desire.
The sad truth is that this fine book is but an introduction to a dying art. In attempting to install (my first) window trim I read and re-read all of the passages dealing with measuring the casings, determining the width of the stool (sill?) and, best of all, how to make the necessary cuts for the returns at the ends of the aprons.
At the same time I purchased this book I also purchased "Finish Carpentry" which turned out to be a collection of articles from Fine Homebuilding magazine showing finish carpentry in the homes of the wealthy and the very wealthy including door casings made of molded plaster and arches made of laminated mahogany, both of which I included in my baronial billiards room (I wish!). Fortunately, there was one useful article on scribing that happened to be written by Mr. Tolpin.
I recommend Mr. Tolpin's "Finish Carpenter's Manual" with great enthusiasm. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The only wind tunnel book available
This is the only book that contains everything one needs to know about sub sonic wind tunnel. For students doing a project or a course in experimental fluid mechanics, or those whose work involve aerodynamics, this will be a good reference. Anyone who has been through fluid mechanics courses during their undergraduate years know the importance of wind tunnel testing. This book covers topics from wind tunnel designs, to measurements, boundary corrections, testing procedures and the nonaeronautical applications of wind tunnel.
However, as wind tunnel is initialy design and most widely use in the study of aeronautics, one needs to have some knowledge in aerodynamics in order to fully understand and appreciate this book.

R.C. Hibbeler needs to read these reviews of his books. He explains material decently, but does not provide nearly enough examples; and those he does provide are about 5 times easier than the problems at the end of the chapter. A solution manual should be a standard package with this book - it is hard to pass without it. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Something Missing
Yes, this book provides a well-illustrated overview of approaches to dock building and choices of materials. But it doesn't go far enough if you have a significant tidal range or if the wind blows. What's missing is any introduction to engineering. How to make sure the ramp doesn't fall off your float when the tide goes out. How to figure the static forces on your dock caused by 4 knot currents. How to estimate the wave heights and dynamic forces in 80 knot winds. And how to design a dock that will survive this abuse. You might want to involve a professional engineer in these situations, but that can be true of pretty much anything to do with docks. A book with this title should at least introduce you to these subjects and provide references for the gory details. Like some others, the author believes books like this should be peppered with jokes. Personally I find this annoying, but I must admit his jokes are above average. So if you want a funny introduction to building docks in gentle places, this book is for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent DIY dock reference
I gave up trying to find any useful information on dock building and then happened across this book not long ago. Max Burns has written a very comprehensive reference book that covers almost any imaginable dock/shore situation including the one I was looking for . If you're thinking of building your own, add this book to your library!

5-0 out of 5 stars an excellent book on the basics of dock design/construction
This is for sure a very good "do it yourself" book. There is no doubt that it is a "must have" for those building their own dock/jetty. The author, Max Burns, has written an excellent book on the basics of dock design and construction that is surprisingly comprehensive but still practical. It is one of the two "only" books I have ever seen on recreational/residential dock construction. I think the way the book was able to streamline and summarize the various technical bits and pieces, although being targeted at the beginner to intermediate designer/builder, does not stop it from being a very useful and informative book to most people. Each chapter is short and readable; the subject matter is directly applicable to real life situations and is not written in a typical textbook manner. I think Sections 2 and 3 on dock types and building provide a hard-to-find and up-to-date overview on various related issues. The graphs and drawings are easy to interpret, and I believe are essential to understanding the key points. Coming from a construction/environmental background I found the inserts/information boxes on the environmental impacts and construction considerations to be written in a way that is very easy to understand and quick to pick-up. Yes, this for sure a very good book to have on the subject of dock design and construction. It is also a model for writers to follow on how to simplify a technical subject, which in many instances can be gruesomely complex, to an easily "digestible" read so people from different walks of life can enjoy it in a practical way and put it to use.

5-0 out of 5 stars Building a dock? BUY THIS BOOK!
"The Dock Manual" tells you everything you need to know about designing, building and maintaining a small residential dock. It is an extremely well written and enjoyable book to read and is loaded with beautiful line drawings and photographs.

There are extensive sections on the different types of docks, materials, tools, hardware and building techniques. The section on connecting your dock to the shore was worth buying on its own! The section on designing your dock was short but there are pictures and drawings of various types of docks scattered throughout the book.

I've gotten many "do it yourself" type of books from Amazon and I think "The Dock Manual" is one of the best! If you have a dock, are planning on building a dock or just dreaming of it then you will LOVE this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars The one, the only.
So it's not 2" thick with color photographs. Considering it's the *only* book I have ever seen regarding residential dock construction, I think it's excellent. The book describes different types of docks, how they are constructed, and under what circumstances each should be used. It also warns of pit-falls, which many Do-it-Yourself books lack. I was actively searching for info when I bought this book at list price. Worth every penny. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Compendious Discussion of Groundwater Development
The author does a great job discussing aquifer properties, the hydrologic cycle, movement of groundwater, exploration, well hydraulics etc.. The book presents information on transmissivity, well yield, storage, time-drawdown, and distance draw-down graphs for confined and unconfined conditions and how to use them. Also the sections on different drilling methods, well design and development I have found useful. Graphs, charts, and pictures are in color which is a nice change from black and white. I would recommend this book to any pofessional interested in groundwater exploration and movement.

5-0 out of 5 stars A fundamental reference for groundwater development
Originally published in 1966, this large book (almost 1100 pages) is a comprehensive reference for all aspects of the development of groundwater resources, with a particular strength in the subjects of water well design, construction, and testing. An essential reference, interesting reading, and the retail price is a bargain. The book is published by Johnson Filtration (now U.S. Filter / Vivende) and may have a bias toward the well screeen design originated by Johnson, but that does not detract from the value of the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Groundwater and Wells
Groundwater and Wells is a very well written, comprehensive reference book that should be on the desk of everyone who works in the groundwater field. The book is well illustrated and the Appendicies alone are well worth the price of the book! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Skips too many steps
As a university professor, I chose this book for a graduate course because it seemed to cover the same topics that I wanted to cover.

Unfortunately, after using it for a semester, I've found that the book always skips the key steps in a derivation. Often, it is only evident to the reader that steps have been skipped from the cryptic language used by the authors: "Using equilibrium and compatibility, the following expression results". Very important information is left out.

The book is so short on detail that it would be better if the authors simply published a stack of formulas.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good for classroom, not for self-study
This book contains a lot of valuable information. However, for self-study, there are too few examples and no answers provided to the problems. It's sometimes hard to decide whether you understand because you don't know whether you're solving problems correctly.

A solutions manual would make this a 5-star book.

In a class-room setting, I'd give the book 4 stars.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good text.

4-0 out of 5 stars Land Surveyor Reference Manual
This was the only book I used to study for the LSIT. I am not a surveyor by trade but a civil engineer. This book did a good job covering and explaining subjects that I had not been exposed to or hadn't worked with since college. Using this book to study with I passed the LSIT exam on the first try. Some of the exam questions seemed like they were taken directly out of the text of this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Do not need it
The manual was not written by a professional or educator in land surveying. The manual delivers only quite superficial coverage to each category in surveying. Although the author managed to involved many relevant information from coded sources, in-depth discussions and delivery of critical fundamental concepts are unavailable.

The manual may be somewhat useful for civil engineering students with none or minimal surveying knowledge, but too much over-simplified ABCs for students possess certain basis surveying knowledge.

It contents not even adequate materials for LSIT exams.

It still could be a concise guide for Civil Professional Engineering candidates in reviewing surveying topics; however, it will not satisfy any other purposes for LS exams, advanced students, or professionals.

If you are buying references in surveying topics intended for in-depth purpose, try something else.

4-0 out of 5 stars very informative, great resource.
