5-0 out of 5 stars A good reference for PLC beginners.
I used this book with great success in the course, Introduction to Programmable Logic Controllers, which I developed for a leading aircraft manufacturer. This book was recommended reading prior to attending other PLC courses offered in my training business.

4-0 out of 5 stars Clear and concise with practical information for beginners
I used this book to train industrial electricians and recommended it in the PLC course I designed at Coyne American Institute in Chicago in 1989. They still use the book along with a lab manual and Allen Bradley PLC's in the electrical maintenance course. I reviewed other books and felt this one was the right choice for the length of course, training level and content. It is clearly written with hardware and instruction set examples from various PLC manufacturers, troubleshooting, number systems, start-up hints and some useful general computer information. Also included is a chapter on understanding MS-DOS commands-very handy for people (a lot of them around) with no computer background except a point-and-click once in a while. The soft cover format, number of pages (372) and size make it easy to carry and throw in a brief case. If you are learning PLC's for the first time, this is a good place to start. If I was going to add anything to it for the next edition, I would include things like data highway, serial communications, remote displays and PID loop. Maybe a little more about programming details involving analog I/O would be nice. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Learning how to manage quality
Tsang Choi Fung, Teresa from City University of Hong Kong, Department of Marketing

This book is used by our university as a textbook for the subject of ¡§Service Quality Management". I found that this book can give us much useful information of service quality. Since service quality is very important in service industry nowadays; there is a need to understand more about how to manage service quality in order to deliver good-quality service and gain customer loyalty.

The contents of this book are divided into four part: Part one is about ¡§Understanding quality concepts¡¨; part two is about ¡§Designing and assuring quality¡¨; part three is about ¡§Implementing quality¡¨; and part four is about ¡§Forever improving the quality system¡¨.

For part one, the author has described about the difference between product quality and service quality as well as the product and service quality dimensions. The main service quality dimensions are tangible, reliability, responsiveness, assurance and empathy. These five service quality dimensions are popularly used nowadays to measure service quality.

Moreover, the author also explained some popular service theories in the world. For example, W. Edwards Deming¡¦s ¡§14 points for management¡¨, ¡§The Juran Trilogy¡¨ advocated by Joseph M. Juran and ¡§The basic seven tools of quality¡¨ advocated by Kaoru Ishikawa, etc. All these theories can be as guidelines for improving service quality.

For part two, this book teaches us how to design and assure service quality. The service design is mainly from the voice of customers and from market. Since the service is mainly used by customers, customers¡¦ voice can help to design better service the match customers¡¦ needs. Moreover, the author has explained how to draw a quality function deployment (QFD) step by step in order to develop or improve service to match customers¡¦ needs and competitors¡¦paces.

In addition, this book introduced SERVQUAL instrument and gaps model that help to understand the gap between customer¡¦s perceived service and expected service, Moreover, SERVQUAL instrument and gaps model can help company to understand more about customers¡¦ requirements and needs, so that company can improve the service that match customers requirements and needs.

For part three, the author has introduced Ishikawa¡¦s basic tools of quality and the seven new tools for improvement. These set of tools can help manager to manage projects and improve service quality. In addition, different control charts such as X chart, R chart, p chart, np chart are introduced. All these charts can help to check whether the variation appeared in the production process is random variation or nonrandom variation, so that improvement can be made in order to correct the poor performance in nonrandom variation.

For part four, it is focus on managing learning for quality improvement as well as implementing and validating the quality system. It emphasizes that improvement should be continuous and should have regular review so that improvement are made on correct direction.

Actually, this book is very useful that give us useful information about service quality. I believe that continuously improving service quality is a must in this competitive market. Therefore, this book can help the reader to grasp how to measure, manage and improve service quality. I hope that all the readers can also enjoy reading this book and learning how to manage service quality for their business in order to meet customers¡¦ needs and gain customers loyalty.

5-0 out of 5 stars Response to Rhenium
Actually, the book has a very balanced view to quality and the United States. The only time that it is mentioned that a US product is better than a foreign product is in the case of Fender Stratocaster guitars. The US models are preferred. It is interesting to note that the book has been translated into Chinese.

1-0 out of 5 stars not that worth.......
General speaking, this book is well organised and written. However, I'd found the author doesn't face the actual problem on nowsday American Industry. Throughout the books, Great Americanism, or America is the best can always be found. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Are you ready to paint
AMAZING, this book did it, it actually taught me how to do faux painting, no other book has ever even come close, the others didnt explane sertain things and other things wernt clear, How To Faux Paint teaches you everything and more, teaches how to paint, sell, and even talk to the customer, anyone who dosent like this book is insane, it will shape your future in just an hour, Rebecca Pittman is the new Princess of Paint.

5-0 out of 5 stars How refreshing!
I've been painting murals for over 14 years, and finding this book has been a breath of fresh air! Everybody else tells you how to paint, how to do a particular finish, how to blend colors, but Rebecca tells you how to make money with all of this knowledge! I think that this book should be the first purchase for anyone starting out in the business! BEFORE you buy a brush! So many talented people fail because they don't understand the BUSINESS of art! I found it clear and straightforward, not full of ambiguous terms and forms that only someone with an MBA would comprehend. We're artists, and she understands that! So many of us are great artisans when we're behind closed doors, but put us in front of a client, and we freeze! Rebecca provides all of the thawing power we could ever hope for.

2-0 out of 5 stars I was excited to read this book
This is a difficult review to write, because I so rarely write average reviews. I was excited to have a look at this book after reading the fantastic reader comments, and because the author is from my hometown. What I read disappointed me. I found the writing choppy and difficult to understand in some chapters. I was looking for beautiful artwork to compliment the written pages, but did not find any. This book read as if the author threw the pages together in one weekend. A disappoinment.

5-0 out of 5 stars How to Start a Faux Painting or Mural Business
Absolutely Terrific! This is the book I had been looking for, to start my own faux/mural business! It answered many of my questions and left me with a confident, can-do attitude!! I had already learned much of the basics of starting a small business, but this was great in that it focused on the business of faux, and murals too. She explained about making samples, went over the whole system of bidding on the job, having the client interview, scheduling, advertising, pricing, referrals, etc., gave some great hints to keep organized, even added a touch of motivational encouragement! Including sample contracts and forms at the back of the book, as well as giving the reader the permission to photocopy them makes this a top-notch business tool! I couldn't read this book fast enough! Now that I'm finished, I can't wait to read it again and really digest the stuff, then get out the paints!

5-0 out of 5 stars Refreshingly Realistic and Invalueable
I have read the few books out on the market on this subject and found a lot of it very unrealistic, and geared towards "crafters" rather than artists.
This books suggestions are simple and professional, helping the reader to ultimately know what it takes to win the client over. It is easy to understand and even humerous at times. When you finish reading just one chapter you feel an overpowering "I really CAN do this!" attitude inside you.
I also appreciated the fact that it covered both faux and mural work rather than just one or the other.
This is one to have for personal reference. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Must have
I learnt CFD on this book. Definitively I give it 5 star, unfortunately I can't give it 6. It covers all the CFD from the beginning to the advance level. You will use it as an undergraduate, graduate, PhD, post doctorate researcher. No kidding. There are some codes, the book contains all the information you need, it is easy to read, never criptic like many others. I suggest you to buy this book without any esitation if you are really wanting to learn and do CFD. There are more specific books on some arguments, say, turbulence, but none is more comprehensive and well written like this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
As a researcher working with CFD codes, I found this book very useful. It has algorithms to all types of problems ranging from simple heat or wave equation to Navier-Stokes equations. All the algorithms are well explained and precise. I strongly recommend this book for anyone pursuing CFD.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best CFD books I've ever read!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A really scientific approach to the engine practice
This book is my Bible. It does not explain you how to add 2HP to the engine, it explains how all that works and why, with theory, numbers and serious real world tests.
You may be interested in the theory: you'll find all you need to understand more detailled research papers.
You don't need theory: you may simply trust very comprehensive and clear conclusions which explain with figures and numbers how thinks work.
The book covers Spark Ignited and Diesel engines, indirect and direct injected.
The book does not cover recent works on high speed SI (like Honda VTEC) and turbo-diesel engines, as well the indirect injected stratified combustion engines.

5-0 out of 5 stars Roark's book raised to the power 3!
This is a first-class reference book, very well organized. As a practising structural engineer, I'm commonly confronted with strength of materials formulas for different kind of structural members and I do extensive FE modeling. It is interesting to have analytical formulas to check these calculations on some occasions.

Roark's formulas for stress and strain hadn't satisfied me: information is not oriented for structural engineers, introductory texts are not enough theoretical and you have US units throughout.

In Pilkey's book, you have the perfect structural engineer's reference: many chapters, with at first a list of notation, explanation of conventions, and then a short introductory course on the subject together with solved examples. After that, there it is: magnificent well-organized "tables", with all kind of data of prime interest to a structural engineer. As an example, I'll mention that you can find plastic section modulus for about 11 section types.

Units are mixed for examples, but for data you have always both US and SI units furnished.

For all entries, Pilkey's book is far more complete than the Roark's one. You'll be surprised by the vastness and depth of formulas furnished. Furthermore, you have structural matrices in each case if you want to do numerical programming.

The list of references is up to date and very extensive. It is a pricy book, but you'll not regret it!

Book Description

This book is well known and well respected in the civil engineering market and has a following among civil engineers. This book is for civil engineers that teach fluid mechanics both within their discipline and as a service course to mechanical engineering students. As with all previous editions this 10th edition is extraordinarily accurate, and its coverage of open channel flow and transport is superior. There is a broader coverage of all topics in this edition of Fluid Mechanics with Engineering Applications. Furthermore, this edition has numerous computer-related problems that can be solved in Matlab and Mathcad. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A comprehensive and understandable work on hydraulics...
As a lecturer and graduate student in water resource engineering, I have read numberous textbooks covering the topic of fluid mechanics. I have reviewed textbooks written by aeronautical and mechanical engineers, and find that the civil engineers, particularly Dr.'s Finnemore and Franzini, have done an exemplary job in writing a book that is clear and logical, yet spares no detail, in presenting the fundamentals of fluids to undergraduates and graduates alike. The book begins with definitions, viscocity, and hydrostatics, then moves along to open-channel hydraulics and waterhammer.

The authors discuss the details in terms of concepts, testing, and mathematical computations while using a minimum of complicated vector integrals. They continue to present "the big picture" of hydraulics even while explaining fluid theory - a student and lecturer could not ask for more. Therefore, it is with great pleasure that I laud this textbook and recommend it to any practicing civil or agricultural engineer, or to any student of engineering.

1-0 out of 5 stars There isn't a rating less than 1 star?
I cannot help but feel like I would like to toss my cookies when I recall this work. Certainly, the author made a futile attempt to provide an apelike overview of fluid mechanics, as it was at the time- but did he really scrutinise those engineering applications? Really and truly? As a reader, I must judge for myself-does this textbook actually present a serious attempt to disseminate the theories and methodologies of fluid mechanics, or is it just a convenient outlet for the author to convey to his readers his most bizarre and disturbing fascination with pipes, heads, and viscous fluids? Personally, I wonder.... ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A Dictionary without Pronunciations?
I have seen this book and borrowed it often. An invaluable reference... BUT: how do you pronounce all of these scientific and foreign-sourced words? I guarantee you will not find them in Webster's. This is a major oversight for a book calling itself a "dictionary."

Book Description

Examines structural aspects of high rise buildings, particularly fundamental approaches to the analysis of the behavior of different forms of building structures including frame, shear wall, tubular, core and outrigger-braced systems. Introductory chapters discuss the forces to which the structure is subjected, design criteria which are of the greatest relevance to tall buildings, and various structural forms which have developed over the years since the first skyscrapers were built at the turn of the century. A major chapter is devoted to the modeling of real structures for both preliminary and final analyses. Considerable attention is devoted to the assessment of the stability of the structure, and the significance of creep and shrinkage is discussed. A final chapter is devoted to the dynamic response of structures subjected to wind and earthquake forces. Includes both accurate computer-based and approximate methods of analysis. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Compendio de sistemas estructurales

2-0 out of 5 stars Good intro, but does not go far enough
I bought this book hoping it would make my job of developing a finite element model using ANSYS easier. But I did not learn much of anything new from this book. I was already familiar with finite element theory and also took the intro to ansys course offered by ANSYS. I had hoped that this book would go beyond what was offered by these two sources, but sadly it does not. Still, for the beginner who knows next to nothing of f.e. methods and ANSYS this is probably helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars A good book for begninners in FE.
The book presents the "black box" behind the GUI. The author wrote the book especially for FE beginners. Ansys users will get the maximum benefit out of it. The book starts by explaining the various formulations applied in FEM. Then, 1D, 2D and 3D elements are presented, followed by simple and clear analytical applications in the field of structural, thermal and fluids. In the second half, the book introduces Ansys and then put it at work through a number of examples. The book/author has the merit of keeping the theory and examples simple and to the point. It is probably the only of its kind. This book is a must for beginners in the FEM.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE RIGHT BOOK TO START WITH
this book is an excellent book for beginners. Unlike other books, this book gives simplified theory and powerful introduction to ANSYS. each chapter has several examples and some of these examples are solved again by ANSYS to verify the analytical results. you can learn the finite element method in any other book of similar size but, you can not learn ANSYS unless you go through the manuals. Therefore, the author did it for the reader. you will learn the FE theory and ANSYS from the same book and in less time than learning FE only from any other book.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's the most complete book for structural engineers.
Now I'm reading this guide in my work in the university im my MSc programm in str engineering. In a few weeks I'll be able to make deeper analysis.

5-0 out of 5 stars a good handbook
it's a good book for analyzing finite elememt model, and ansys is a really power tool! some one can write a book using ansys to analyze a bridge or a building.

5-0 out of 5 stars Answered my questions
I have been considering building a home on a piece of property I own for the better part of a year now. I'm a fan of SIPs due to energy efficiency and the perception I have of their ability to withstand the harsh climate of south Texas. It helps that the best home I've ever owned (and I've owned more than ten) was a panelized home but on a wood foundation that I purchased in Minnesota 15 years ago. The house was solid, energy efficient and better built than anything any of the many site built stick homes I owned before and since.

I've tracked down a variety of sources of information on SIPS including most information readily available on the web. This book has been an essential tool for me, and I would heartily recommend it to anyone considering building with SIPs. It addresses all of the common objections and misperceptions (and there are many), and it does so in a methodical and comprehensive manner. I can see where some folks might consider that to be promotional, but I believe there is still a stigma to panelized construction, at least in the minds of a large segment of the population, so perhaps it's appropriate that a little promotion or cheerleading is included. It also addresses a number of practical considerations you'll have when building, such as electrical, plumbing and hvac considerations. It's not a manual, but I wasn't looking for a manual. After reading it, I feel that I will be better able to find and work with a builder and accomplish my build a quality, affordable house that is structurally superior, energy efficient and will last the rest of my life. Most importantly, I have yet to find another source on the subject that provides so much information with so little effort. As a result, it gets five stars.

4-0 out of 5 stars Informative, though promotional
Three years after it was published, this is still the only book that I'm aware of that offers comprehensive coverage on the subject. Luckily, it is a very informative one -though a bit promotional. If you are looking to build or have someone build an SIP home, read this book first then you'll know at least as much as your SIP sales person does -a good position to be in when shopping for anything.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just what I was looking for
This book filled every expectation and more. I am a builder looking to possibly transition to SIPs. This book answered all my questions and some I hadn't thought of yet. If you are a builder looking to start using SIPs, buy this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars A dissapointing offering from the Taunton press
While the Taunton press has published some quality books, I certainly don't feel this is one. As a professional contactor looking for an introduction to SIPs, this book did provide a cursory overview of the product and its use. I was, however, disappointed to the point of annoyance with both factual and editing errors. I found terms introduced but not defined, misplaced paragraphs of text, and no mention of areas of real concern that someone considering using this system should be aware (perform internet search using the keywords: Structal Inslated Panel, failures, Alaska).
Perhaps I am too hard to please, and the book is right up your alley. In its favor, there are a lot of glossy photos, clear line drawings, and sidebars showing related tidbits of information. For the reader that likes to browse through a book in no particular order just to get the feel for a topic, this is probably right on the money. For someone looking for a more rigorous and substantive view of SIPs, or for one accustomed to higher editing standards, I would recommend looking elsewhere.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive new book to cover emerging building technology
While SIPs have been arround for 60 years, the author believes the time is now for explosive growth of this technique for residential and commercial buildings.

The book covers all steps in the fabrication and assembly of SIP panels and buildings in a way that isn't overly technical. The emphasis is for professionals, and indeed SIPs present a challenge to the do-it yourselfer since some of the panel elements are so large a crane or forklift is essential. SIP building as presented, however, seems very simple, and otherwise suited to self-builders. In essense each panel when complete can stand in for many other elements: the studs, plates, the sheating , insulation, vapour barrier, fasteners, plumbing and electrical chases, and interior rough or finished surfaces.

The book gives lots of information on different SIP types, and tools.

The book covers structural panels almost exclusively, in other words the simmilar panels used for timber frames etc..., which are not load-bearing are addressed, but are not the subject of this book.

My only dissappointment is that as an amateur builder the book doesn't deal with that aspect of the subject at all. The field is relatively unfriedly to non-commercial participants. SIPs are relatively hard to find in small quantities, and even though the process is simpler that stud building, for instance, they don't want to deal with you but your architect. Not the book's fault.

The author seems a sincere advocate for SIPs, if at times a little closed to other alternatives, which would present less of a cultural, financial, or technical barrier to the average buyer or user. I'd like to believe him, but so far SIPs haven't made an appearance at the local Home Depot. Most people have hammered a nail into a 2x4, but your going to have to buy into this system sight unseen, unless the SIP industry gets a little more democratic about its distribution.

This book was probably a three star or four star effort for me, given my focus, but fully five star for the intended audience: Contractors stepping up to the system for the first time. ... Read more
