Some years back it looked like X-10 was going to revolutionize how houses were built. There would be automatic controls of lights, heating and air conditioning, fire and burglar alarms, everything was going to be automatic and computer controlled. It didn't come to pass.

A book with a very specific orientation
This book is NOT suited for electrical engineers who want to learn SCADA. It is, however, adequate for business men or managers who would like to acquire a general (very general indeed)understanding of SCADA terminology. Themes within the book are treated superficially sometimes, with a greater depth in others (such as when addressing protocols) that is not consistent nor coherent. I do not recommend this book for a Power Systems Engineer, student of such systems, or any electric or electronic engineer that wishes to understand SCADA.

Excellent for training
For training technicians, this book provides an excellent introduction to how SCADA systems work. Most of the more detailed system information requires training and manuals from specific vendors who usually provide good information on their products but little in the way of a system-wide view.

SCADA Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition, 2nd edition
I found this book to contain mostly dated, simplistic information and believe it to be unsuitable for an engineer. It will NOT advance the expertise of anyone with even minor expertise in this field. I'm stunned that it has ISA backing and is a second edition. Don't waste your time on this book unless you need only a casual, conceptual understanding of this subject.

The book provides an in-depth and uniform treatment of a mathematical model for reasoning robotic agents. The book also contains an introduction to a programming method and system based on this model.

The mathematical model, known as the "Fluent Calculus'', describes how to use classical first-order logic to set up symbolic models of dynamic worlds and to represent knowledge of actions and their effects. Robotic agents use this knowledge and their reasoning facilities to make decisions when following high-level, long-term strategies. The book covers the issues of reasoning about sensor input, acting under incomplete knowledge and uncertainty, planning, intelligent troubleshooting, and many other topics.

The mathematical model is supplemented by a programming method which allows readers to design their own reasoning robotic agents. The usage of this method, called "FLUX'', is illustrated by many example programs. Outstanding robot construction book
The other reviewers have already written about how great the illustrations are in this book, about the author's ability to clearly explain some fairly difficult tasks, and about the author's Battlebots record. They're right on all counts, and this is an excellent book.

Best book on building robots
This book is one of the best I have bought so far. Those of you just getting started on building robot will be especially pleased about the countless tips on the correct way to use tools and construction techniques etc. The huge number of illustrations is a welcomed bonus.

The section on choosing a Remote Control is very informative.

If you are hoping for sections on electronics, programming or building your own parts for the electrical/electronic components you will be very dissapointed as all the parts used are off the shelf.

You might want to supplement this book with Amphibionics and Insectronics by Karl Williams which has good sections of programming and electronics.

No book is perfect but if you want to build a REAL fighting robot this is the best book around and I'm saying this after having bought most of the popular ones around.

Beautiful Illustrations
I knew of the author from watching BattleBots on TV (he built Deadblow http://www.battlebots.com/battlebots_detail.asp?ID=60) so I pre-ordered this before it even came out.

The thing that sets this one apart from some of the other books is the illustrations - they are absolutely beautiful, and really add to the clarity and readability of the book, although I wish they were in color.

Regardless, this is a brilliant book on robotics. I imagine this is a great place to start if you are just getting into robots, and if you are like me and know some basics after building a few kits, this is a great guide to doing it all from scratch. It provides a great deal of detail, and I'll bet that even veterans are sure to pick up a few tricks here and there.

Well written and easy to understand
Just getting started with robots, and this is my first book on building them. I chose this one because I eventually want to build a battlebot, although I plan to just start with a basic bot.

So far this is exactly what I wanted. It is very easy to understand, the directions are clear and easy to follow, and the drawings are absolutely killer.

This book is for Rhinoceros Release 2.0 however the current version of Rhino is 3.0. This might sound like a minor detail but a lot of the illustrations in the book will not match what is showing on your screen which makes learning frustrating.

One of the Best Self study books I've ever read!!!!
Being a person who does alot of self studying (All Technical materials from networking to 3d)I would say this is one of the best books I've ever read. The explenation matches step by step to the excersizes given to practice. I've finished the book once and will try it one more time because of the volume of the info that has been explained in the book. There are very minor misstakes where a step or two have been droped by the author and makes the reader a little confuse ( the result of the excersize will not match the one in the book). But I have not seen or read any other book without those small misstakes.

easy to follow instructions a good start to Rhino
Have been using this book for about 6 hours now. I notice a few ommissions in the directions, a couple of typos, too. But basicaly this is a great book. The CD comes with a demo version of Rhino 2 which allows for 25 saves. I do not know what happens after you use the 25 saves.

There are good step by step instructions for making a couple of items like a VW beetle, a joystick for game control, and a telephone. I will be ready to move on to another book rather quickly after this, for some more sophisticated stuff. But I forsee this book continuing to be a good reference for operating the commands.

SLC500 PLCs
Excellent for getting a good training on PLCs. First half is general PLCs and second half mostly SLC500. This is the main book, not the Lab Manual. You can order the lab manual that has the large words "Lab Manual" on the cover. Just to be sure I requested NOT getting the lab manual. I also keep this book at work for ref book.

Introduction to Programmable Logic Controllers (Electrical T
This is a LAB Manual. It is no good unless you have the software that goes along with it. I will be returning it.

Good starters book
I recommend this book to my students who are getting started in PLC programming. It is a good beginner's book but more advanced readers will be disappointed. The reason I did not give it five stars is because the book is a little too pricey for basically being a lab manual. With this book and the PLC drivers at http://www.vhmiautomation.com/PLCCD.html my students have had great success with interfacing to various PLCs also.

LAB MANUAL
What the publisher's blurb and the other reviews DON"T say is that this is a LAB MANUAL! If you don't have the appropiate software it's value is very limited. I will be returning it to exchange for a real "Intro to PLC's".

An Instructors Dream
I teach a basic course in programmable logic controllers. I have found this book to be a dream come true. While there are a lot of books out today dealing with PLCs most of them fall far short of this book. Excellent for beginner
This is the book you need to start learning scripting for ArcGIS. It has an introductory chapter teaching about the basics of VB and then the Arc objects themselves. The examples are very clear and easy to follow. A very suitable book for people who doesn't know programming at all.

Good for beginners..
I'm using this book for a lab section of GeoComputation, and after working through the first few exercises and looking through the rest of the book, I am impressed.

The CD included with the book contains all of the data you'll need to complete the exercises. I found Burke's writing to be fluid and insightful. Each chapter begins with a good overview and background of what will be done. There are many diagrams, as well, so you can see the expected results.

This isn't a programming book in the C++ range. It is a book detailing how to customize and make ArcView 8.x work for you using Visual Basic for Applications. Recommended. Enjoy

Good place to start on ArcObjects. It primarily deals with the designing of interfaces, rather than using the commands for automation. Good intro to the concepts of the ArcMap Object model, properties, methods, and events...there's even a little blurb or cursors. Covers a little of ArcCatalog, too. Note: ArcTools DOES NOT follow the ArcObject Model...so if you are looking for properties, methods and events pertaining to this, I guess wait 'til ArcGIS 9. Also, there are no scripting cabilities similar to AML...you'll have to wait 'til ArcGIS 9, where python is used as the scripting language to replace AML. Also, does not address OOP concepts on the GeoDatabase model very much...but this book is definately better than Getting to Know ArcGIS ... Read more

Awesome book!
In response to the last review I have to say that all of the files listed in the book actually ARE available on the authors website - just follow the links that are listed for the book support!! I downloaded all the files without any problems. Craig must have been confused about the PicBasic Pro compiler - you do have to buy that from a software company (microengineering labs) but getting the compiler makes PIC microcontroller programming painless and the author would be liable if he put it on his website for free. You don't even really need the compiler if you are building the robots as they are described in the book because the book lists the hex files needed to program the microcontroller. The great thing about this book is that it stands alone because all of the programs and the hex files are listed in the book so that you don't actually need to access the authors website at all - the book is complete on its own.
The projects are really amazing and so well described that I could do it without a lot of electronics knowledge to begin with. I've built the robot snake and the first time it slithered across the floor was a very exciting achievement. This is the kind of ground-breaking book that could inspire a whole new generation of AI robots!

Promised files not available
I have sent 3 e-mails to Mr Williams asking when the sample programs and other files in the book would be available as stated in the book and so far have received no response and the files are still not available on his web page I purchased the book in July of 2003 so at this point I would not purchase another book by this author.

Amazing book! Build four incredible robots
Finally a book that gives complete, concise details for building real working robots.

This book starts out with the basics of metal working and test equipement that will be needed to build the robots. There is a very informative chapter on PIC programming that makes understanding and programming microcontrollers very easy. The book has great mechanical drawings for cutting, drilling and bending the aluminum. The schematics are easy to follow and printed circuit board templates are also included so you can make your own circuit boards. There are also diagrams that show you exactly where each of the electronic components should be positioned on the boards. Once the circuit boards and mechanics have been constructed, complete wiring diagrams are included showing you how to wire everything up - this book does not let you down!!

The first robot project is a frog that achieves locomotion by jumping. This is a really cool design and it uses the same circuit board that was used for the Insectronic robot (his first
book).

The second robot is a snake and is very cool. This is my favorite robot in the entire book and the only one that I have built so far. It is so amazing to watch this robot move around
the room. Once again, the book is complete in the details for building and programming this robot along with building an infrared sensor board. Lots of great pictures. The author also has a website with movies of the snake...

THe Third robot is a four legged walking crocodile. This robot uses a dual motor gearmotor and an interesting mechanical design. This chapter also focuses on the implementaion of a wireless data link, remote control, DC motor control and leg sensors. The pictures and diagrams are excellent.

The fourth robot is a wheeled turtle robot that can move in any direction. It shows you how to use an ultrasonic range finder for precise measurement and an optical shaft encoder implemented for room mapping. This chapter is a lot of fun because the history of Grey Walters' historic robot turtle experminents are described.

Each chapter starts with a description of the robots biological counterpart and its inspiration.

This book is worth twice what it is selling for!
