Anyone who has tried to teach MR to non-physicists is used to two dilemas.

I am a student of Graduate School, and my major is Adaptive Control. I consider this book very good book for me, especially because it summarizes and covers most of the basic concept and method about control engineering, which I sometimes forget. So, by having this book now, I can anytime find and reread the part I have forgotten. Of course, it will be better if you also accompany this book with others books which explain more detil about control.

I'm currently taking a Feedback Control Theory course at the undergrad level, and I think this book is an excellent exposition of classical control theory. Our text for the course is Feedback Control of Dynamic Systems, written by people from Stanford. Schaum's Outline actually has more *theory* than the textbook we are using. It eliminates all of the frills and pretty colored diagrams in favor of exposing everything an undergraduate would have trouble with. And for those people who think the emphasis is only on problem solving, this "Outline" has more mathematical proof than the book from Stanford I just mentioned! I highly recommend using this book to get off on the right foot in control systems, whether you are an engineer just learning the material or an undergraduate; it solidifies the foundations of the theory so that practical problems will come more easily. Also, it is a practical book as well.

I only bought this book after I went through undegraduate control and digital control classes. And after getting very fragmented knowledge of these disciplines, this book was very good in helping me sort it out. Yes, if you don't know a thing about control theory or don't have basic math background, it probably is hard to grasp without any other sourses. But if you have some basic understanding of the subject, then it is a very good review and reference for the classical control theory. I used this book for review before taking a PhD preliminary exam in controls, and it helped a lot. Now I am using it for the same reason for the job I just started. I like the way it describes digital control theory in parallel with the continuous-time controls, which is the best way to understand the discrete-time tools, instead of taking a whole other class starting from scratch. Constant examples to illustrate the theory are very good, so are the excersises. Mind you, this book doesn't go into details like some 800pp. volumes but it doesn't leave out anything important either. I highly recommend this book to undegrad and grad students, as well as a reference for the engineers.

Dear fellow readers: I recently read Schaum's outline of feedback and control systems. This book was recommended to me as a text that will give me a clear understanding of control systems. I am sorry to say that this book did not meet my original expectations. The basic concepts are very well illustrated in the first two chapters, but then it dives into explaining the mathematics of control systems (differential equations, z-transform etc.). They're simply too much emphasis of the vocabulary, which is down right confusing. The book also fails to give a clear picture of how different design methods (e.g. Root-Locus) can be employed in a real situation. It is my recommendation that this book should not be the only source of information, and must be used in junction with another control book. This statement holds true especially for university students. In a positive note, there are many examples that can help the reader gain insightful knowledge in this subject, and it also does a good job giving an overall picture of how different concepts relate to each other. These alone are good enough reasons to have a look at this book when studying control systems. ... Read more

The first 2/3rds of this book are more about electronics in general than robotics, but it's a great way to see how all the parts really work and interrelate. It really takes away a lot of the mystery. The author's writing style is geared towards high-schoolers, but at the same time he doesn't dumb it down. As a 40-year old with little electronics background, but lots of computer programming, this was a great relief to me.

Each recipe comes with a full list of parts and tools required, so you can head to RadioShack or wherever knowing you have what you need. Highly recommended.

AS a 14 year old, I wanted to find a book that could help me learn about robots but I found most of the books too hard or too juvenile. This book starts right off with pipe-cleaner and lego robots and gradually goes up from there. I'm really excited about this book and I'm looking forward to learning how to build my own robots.

If you don't know _anything_ about robots and don't know where to start - this is probably the book for you. Mr. Predko starts with a few simple robot models and then goes through materials, basic electronics, semiconductors, timers, digital logic, power, introductory programming, computer interfacing and, finally robot design. When you get through all the experiments, you can comfortably call yourself a "roboticist" and have the knowledge to start creating your own small robots.

This book is VERY dense with a lot of information in it - don't exepct to get through it in a few days. There are literally ONE HUNDRED AND TWENTY THREE experiments in this book, each one nicely thought out and written and not a lot of work - I've done three now (building the PCB that comes with the book, a 555 PWM and servo driver).

This is definitely the best book out there for people who want to come up with their robots and don't even know what they have to know. Mr. Predko, well done!

The book is an excellent source of information for network design and product development. It covers all aspects of optical network design. No other book covers this aspect of network design as this one does. Network classificaiton and explanation is very contemporary and cutting edge technologies are shown in the manuscript. The futures section covers technologies that seem most appropriate for real time networks. The simulation software is useful for physical layer design as well as network layer routing and wavelength assignment strategies....

This is good book, giving comprehensive details on the DWDM networks. I think its a helpful reference for beginners as well as those in this field for quite some time. Especially the coverage on WDM network design is really good. I hope we get to hear more from the authors!! But for now...this is truely a must-have for this topic!

This is really a good book covering the various aspects of Optical networking. The networking part is dealt smoothly, but a slight editting is required in the sections where the authors discuss about the various equations and the physical characteristics of fibers.

This is not a book you can use to rigourously learn the fundamentals of image processing. It's a good reference book for the techniques, giving formulas and some hand waving to accompany them - little is motivated, ir doesn't flow, is more a compendium of techniques used in the field accompanied by some text just to make the formulas less dry : the format formula/paragraph is repeated throughout; everything is treated at the same level hence the disjointed structure that doesn't flow. Low on rigourous analysis; may be good as a collection of magazine articles but fails as a textbook on fundamentals - reading this book you'll know the how but it won't help you grasp the why.

This book is a "must have" for anyone interested in understanding the JPEG standard. It has two distinct parts.
The second half is the JPEG standard itself. It contains all the technical details of how JPEG works, including pseudocode flow charts, and test data to verify JPEG compliance.
The first half is the author's (less formal) understanding of the JPEG standard, where he explains the details of the standard which might be unclear to the novice.
Everything from the aspects of the human visual system, to the mathematics of Discrete Cosine Transformation, to entropy coding, to JPEG file organization is explained.
I knew nothing about image processing before studying this book. After studying this book (for a long time) I was able to write a complete application and have total control over reading and writing JPG files.

The robot arm project and the devious two leg walking machine is explained fantastic. The mechanical blue prints and also the pictures very high quality. If you want to know how to interface these robotic machines to a personal computer or have them walk around independent then this book is the great one!! You just can't go wrong with the instructionals and easy to read too. Sooo much fun I love this stuff!!!!!!!

In response to the last review I have to say that all of the files listed in the book actually ARE available on the authors website - just follow the links that are listed for the book support!! Go to the thinkbotics website and see for yourself.
You can download all the files without any problems. Don't be confused about the PicBasic Pro compiler and Visual Basic - you do have to buy those packages from software companies (microengineering labs \ Microsoft) but getting the compiler makes PIC microcontroller programming painless and the author would be liable if he put it on his website for free.

Be aware that building robots is going to cost you more money than the price of the book.

PLEASE NOTE: You don't even need the compiler or Visual basic if you are building the robots as they are described in the book because the book lists the hex files needed to program the microcontrollers. The visual basic application that is built in chapter 6 (which completely explains how to do it) is also available for free on the authors website - Yep it is actually there. The great thing about this book is that it stands alone because all of the programs and the hex files are listed in the book so that you don't actually need to access the authors website at all - the book is complete on its own!!

This is another great book by Williams - the diagrams, pictures and descriptions are very well done.

4-0 out of 5 stars CORRECTION: It would be a better book if . . .
Karl Williams would get up and post the source code and complied version of the servo controller interface like was promised on the first page of the chapter. I have been to the web site mentioned in the book once a day for the past month (4/22/2004 - 5/29/2004) and the book which was published on MARCH, 26th 2004 is still listed, by the author as "coming soon!". I have e-mailed Karl Williams at both e-mail accounts listed on his two web sites. I do not have the $185 to buy VB. I barely had the $86 for the parts for the arm and controller project. If I can't get the compiled code soon I will have to send the parts back for a refund. IF I do that and return the book I might be able to get VB at a computer show. My next step is to contact the publisher about this. Otherwise the projects were fairly nice, and had room to be built upon.

PLEASE NOTE: That as of 11:40 AM on June 1, 2004 the author has posted the source files as stated above. Now that it is supported I highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous resource - Great robotics book!!
This is actually a very well written and researched book!! It starts off with the fundamentals of PIC microcontrollers and how to program them. The first project is a great robot arm design. Like his other two books, the mechanical drawings and illustrations are beautiful and easy to follow. The arm includes a wrist and a human type of hand\gripper. After the mechanical portion of the arm is completed, an interface board is built. This interface board connects to your personal computer. Once again, all of the printed circuit board designs are presented making construction easy. The next chapter delves into writing visual basic software to control the arm - this was very valuable information for me and I'm sure many other roboticist who want to know how to program the PC to control robots or other devices. This chapter alone is worth the price of the book! The next chapter is all about speech recognition and builing a circuit board with a head-set to control the robot arm with spoken commands. This is the real thing and the system works quite well. The next chapter shows you how to build a humanoid head that displays emotions through facial expressions. This chapter has some interesting info about the science of facial mnemonics. I would probably never build the head but this project takes advantage of the interface board and software developed in the previous chapters.
Then final project is a bipedal (two legs) walking robot. The design of this robot is amazing!! Williams does a great job with the mechanical design again - just like the robots in Amphibionics and Insectronics. The robot incorporates a pic microcontroller with analog-to-digital converters that are used to monitor the sensors on the legs so that a stable walking algorithm can be programmed. Once the robot is programmed to be able to walk, an infrared sensor is used so that the robot can avoid obstacles. This robot can walk forward, reverse, turn right and turn left. The printed circuit board artwork and all the software is included in the text. I learned a lot by builing this robot and it is VERY cool to show this one off. This robot can actually do a lot of things and the fact that it actually walks on two legs is amazing.

Just a note about the last posting by Stanley J Morris - building robots is going to cost you money - nothing is free and that includes the software compiler written by a company that the author is not affiliated with in any way - he does not profit from it.

For anyone wanting to learn how to film, produce video in digital format as well as conventional sources, this is the ultimate reference guide. It takes you through every step. From purchasing the right equipment even on a budget, tips on how to produce the perfect video and sound through to editing, encoding and delivery. Not only it is a must for beginners but an excellent source to professionals as the detailed information and recourses contained are second to none.

The book is divided into compressive chapters, which are very easy to follow and are written in plain English. Diagrams and pictures take you through all the necessary steps. Although the title "Digital Movies with QuickTime" falls short, yes the use of QT video is explained in great detail but also the use of other programs like iMovie, Final Cut Pro and Abobe Premiere as also perfectly explained. There is also the added bonus of Terrain Cleaner, which lets you export to other formats like Real Media, Windows Media as well as CD, VCD and DVD delivery.

The book includes aa CD with step by step references and examples. Personally I didn't get to use it as not being a beginner, I could relate to most of the explanations given just on the book. The author even goes to the extreme on teaching you how to do a professional film production, how to budget, hire actors, etc.

I strongly recommend this book, it's very well written, easy to follow and totally up to date.

I used this book for a course on Digital Control System Design and it help me to have a clear understanding on continuous control system design methods applied to discrete time control systems. The book have chapters specialized in time domain and frequency domain analysis, along with alternative methods to design with damping and natural frequency specifications. Same old, same old. This is more or less Qauntum Electronics in (yet) another cover. Yariv is a lousy presenter. The materials in this book are never really difficult. The reader, however, may have trouble following it from time to time just because it's poorly organized and presented. Make no mistake, optical electronics is no quantum field theory, and you should be able to pick it up over the time you spend over the commode. Rather than impeding your learning by battling the style of this book, do yourself a favor and get one of the several better alternatives already out there.

This book is one of the best investments you can do, it is worth every penny and then some. This text has the perfect mix of mathematics and amusement. It gives outstanding overview of all optics, photonics and fiber optic communication basics.The figures are good, as are the problems at the end of each chapter. As an optical graduate, I recommend this text highly to graduates and optical engineers. Yariv has a clear style and is a very good writer. The format is also great!

Yariv lacks the ability to put concepts before equations. Half the time is spent understanding what stuff means rather than learning the physics. He never really explains what quantities mean physically. I feel Yariv has serious problems with using the letter to describe several quantities (as another reviewer wrote).

I wish he would write in words what he is trying to say rather than describing everything with equations. He leaves many important concepts as homework problems to be derived.

He also has a very arrogent tone in the book, when he says stuff can be easily derived and it can't.

Here we go again. Another edition of the same book, without any significant additions or more emphasis. Yariv mostly puts together parts of what he had published decades ago in this book. He pays little attention to pedagogy and does not care to put connections between concepts in different chapters.

I could not find a spirit in the book that ties concepts together. Yariv jumps from one notation or symbol set to another without giving you any notice, which makes me think that he was more concerned with putting together his notes in a book format than trying actually teach you the subject. Publishing essentially the same book as another edition just adds insult to the injury.

Do yourself a favor and check out some other book on the same subject, such as Verdeyen's Laser Electronics. Or if you have to buy it, save yourself a buck or two and buy an older edition used.
