3-0 out of 5 stars A good book for a novice soils engineer
Reasonably well rounded book (at a reasonably good price!) illustrating the practical aspects of geotechnical engineering. Concepts are explained in good detail and solved problems are helpful in promoting understanding. Essentially, a good book to start out your tech library, but too general in nature to be considered for a "reference text". For that, you might rely on books by Terzaghi, Peck, Thornburn, Bowles, Fang, etc.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for the PE
I took this book in with me for the PE exam and it helped me get about 10 problems right. There are tons of examples and problems with solutions in this book. I regret not taking the geotechnical section of the PE exam.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Author Responds
What divergent opinions !! Naturally I think the book is loaded with practical geotechnical information, including tons of solved problems. Give the book a chance and decide for yourself. Many thanks to my supporters....

1-0 out of 5 stars Not worth the money!
The book is too oriented to domestic US soils, and the aproach is superficial and over-simplified. The amount of useful information is less than 5% of the huge size of the volume. Really a waste of money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Useful
I have examined the book and find it to be an excellent book for learning the practical aspects of geotechnical engineering. The author is uptodate and thorough, yet he explains in a very down-to-earth style, by photographs and numerical examples, some very real engineering problems a geotechnical engineer is likely to face in practice. ... Book Description

Using a design-oriented approach that addresses geotechnical, structural, and construction aspects of foundation engineering, this book explores practical methods of designing structural foundations, while emphasizing and explaining how and why foundations behave the way they do. It explains the theories and experimental data behind the design procedures, and how to apply this information to real-world problems.Covers general principles (performance requirements, soil mechanics, site exploration and characterization); shallow foundations (bearing capacity, settlement, spread footings -- geotechnical design, spread footings -- structural design, mats); deep foundations (axial load capacity -- full-scale load tests, static methods, dynamic methods; lateral load capacity; structural design); special topics (foundations on weak and compressible soils, foundation on expansive soils, foundations on collapsible soils); and earth retaining structures (lateral earth pressures, cantilever retaining walls, sheet pile walls, soldier pile walls, internally stabilized earth retaining structures). For geotechnical engineers, soils engineers, structural engineers, and foundation engineers. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great for Reference
This book starts with a great review of the basics of soil mechanics, and then discusses a wide range of topics such as foundations, bearing walls, footings, deep footings, and many more. Unlike other books, this book is not strictly theory; you can easily apply and understand what this book teaches. It also provides good examples.

Book Description

The First Comprehensive Guide to Shallow FoundationsOver the last few decades, the bearing capacity of shallow foundations has been studied more thoroughly than any other subject in geotechnical engineering. Until now, however, most references on foundation engineering devoted only a single chapter to the subject. Shallow Foundations: Bearing Capacity and Settlement provides what many engineers have been waiting for-a concise, comprehensive reference containing all the relevant material on shallow foundation behavior under static and dynamic loads related to their ultimate bearing capacity, allowable bearing capacity, and settlement.Estimation Techniques, Earthquake Loading, and Experimental ResultsThe author-a renowned expert-presents the various theories developed during the past fifty years for estimating the ultimate bearing capacity of shallow foundations under various types of loading and subsoil conditions. He discusses the principles of estimating foundation settlement and for estimating the stress increase in a soil mass supporting a foundation. Earthquake loading and its effects on ultimate bearing capacity have received considerable attention in recent years, and the author provides an overview of these developments. He also offers details regarding permanent foundation settlement caused by cyclic and transient loading-details derived from laboratory and field experimental observations.Progress in Soil ReinforcementResearchers have made steady progress in evaluating the potential of soil reinforcement to reduce settlement and increase ultimate and allowable bearing capacities of shallow foundations. This book provides an entire chapter on the subject, including discussions of the materials used: galvanized steel strips, geotextile, and geogrid. The presentation of Shallow Foundations is clear, concise, and filled with examples and exercises that illustrate the theory. This book stands alone as an in-depth, authoritative guide to shallow foundation bearing capacities and the effects of different soil types, slopes, settlement, reinforcement, and seismic activity. Researchers, students, and practicing engineers will all welcome its addition to their reference shelves. ... Read more

THIS BOOK MADE ME TRUST MY SELF

5-0 out of 5 stars A COMPLETE IDIOT'S GUIDE TO SHALLOW FOUNDATIONS!
Braja's strike again with this easy to understand book on shallow foundations. It has an excellent theory and an amazing practice (examples and exercises). I bought "principles of foundation engineering" by this author and this book complements the chapter of shallow foundations with recently theory and new and improved examples.

I use both books in my work and I strongly recommend to buy this book if you work in the geotechnical area. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars decent but not great
This book tends to the technical side of things, which I enjoyed. There are numerous citations of technical sources. The author explains some basic concepts in technical terms which helped my understanding significantly. The author is an experienced foundation repair contractor. I learned much about causes of foundation failures, how to classify a foundation as failed or not, and other general but useful information.
However, this book is poorly written. The author repeats himself frequently. Sometimes from section to section and sometimes from chapter to chapter. Further, in the parts of the book which are obviously taken from the authors own experience and technical knowledge he makes strong claims about the effect of trees planted near foundations and backs up these claims with data and solid theoretical analysis. However, in other parts of the book where he is citing outside sources, he presents information which contradicts his own claims. This happens a couple times. It can be a bit confusing. The photos in the book are literally worthless-most are at least 50% solid black-no contrast. The illustrations are excellent. I live in the midwest where basement foundations are common and was most interested in those types of foundations. The author is from the south (Dallas I believe) and discusses slab on grade and pier and beam foundations extensively, but only mentions basement foundations nonchalantly. The basement foundation section of the book is severely lacking-just a handful of pages. However, the author is honest about this at the beginning of the chapter and tells the reader that he has little experience in the area. I wish I'd known that before I spent nearly $60 on it! This isn't a do-it-yourself or a how-to book. It provides some light technical information tempered with lots of citations of outside sources and lots of professional experience. This book removed any fear I had about working on foundations, I now understand them much better. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource
I found Mr. McCarthy's book to be a valuable resource. From a geologist's perspective, it was of great help in bridging the gap between engineering geology and geotechnical engineering. It gave me greater insight into not only field technique, but also into geologic considerations that are of importance in foundation design. The text was both concise and clearly written.

4-0 out of 5 stars A single volume encyclopedia of foundation engineering
This book is excellent. It covers all aspects of foundation analysis and design in a lucid manner. Contains a good number of worked out examples.

4-0 out of 5 stars A fundamental reference
If you have only a few geotechnical engineering books, this should be one of them. As a practicing geotechnical engineer I use this book 2 to 3 times per week. It includes the theory and essential reference material.

1-0 out of 5 stars Too Focused on the Analysis Software
I was very impressed with an earlier edition of Bowles' book as he had some very well-explained design examples (the best I had seen on design of sheet-pile walls). When I purchased this edition, I was dismayed to find that the text is very much centered around the software included with the book. In some cases the author provides sample computer output rather than illustrative design examples. This text left me regretting making the purchase, and hoping to find a used copy of one of the earlier editions.
