4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource
I found Mr. McCarthy's book to be a valuable resource. From a geologist's perspective, it was of great help in bridging the gap between engineering geology and geotechnical engineering. It gave me greater insight into not only field technique, but also into geologic considerations that are of importance in foundation design. The text was both concise and clearly written.

3-0 out of 5 stars From a Civil/Geological Engineering student's view...
* Poor index - no detail * Good detail in text on subjects covered * Has some errors in the chapter on flownets * Disjointed in discussion of compaction * Good for students with little to no soil mechanics background

4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent engineering tool!
Civil engineers throughout the world can use this book as either a classroom text or reference handbook. It covers a variety of soil conditions including expansive soils and provides examples of both foundation designs, and retaining earth structures. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a great intro book on Soil Mechanics.
I just finished taking a intro Soil Mechanics class using this book. We completed all 16 chapters which is quite a feat for any engineering class.

I thought the book was very good at laying out the conceptual aspects of soil mechanics and it was very easy to read through, espcially for an engineering book. The book has lots of illustrations and pictures (B&W). The books chapter layout was a little bass ackwards (Ch 11-14). The book has a fair amount of sample problems, at least one for every concept. However Engineering students regarding solved problems are like crack addicts on the streets, you can never have enough of what you desire.

I would actually rate this book a 4.5/5.0......but I had to round up.

3-0 out of 5 stars Much to be desired.
I first bought this book as a required text for a couple of my modules in school. This book is very effective when it comes to presenting the mathematical formula, examples and graphs. However, the discussions of tests and soil behaviour left much to be desired.

This book would be suitable for people who just started on soil mechanics. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A good book for a novice soils engineer
Reasonably well rounded book (at a reasonably good price!) illustrating the practical aspects of geotechnical engineering. Concepts are explained in good detail and solved problems are helpful in promoting understanding. Essentially, a good book to start out your tech library, but too general in nature to be considered for a "reference text". For that, you might rely on books by Terzaghi, Peck, Thornburn, Bowles, Fang, etc.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for the PE
I took this book in with me for the PE exam and it helped me get about 10 problems right. There are tons of examples and problems with solutions in this book. I regret not taking the geotechnical section of the PE exam.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Author Responds
What divergent opinions !! Naturally I think the book is loaded with practical geotechnical information, including tons of solved problems. Give the book a chance and decide for yourself. Many thanks to my supporters....

1-0 out of 5 stars Not worth the money!
The book is too oriented to domestic US soils, and the aproach is superficial and over-simplified. The amount of useful information is less than 5% of the huge size of the volume. Really a waste of money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Useful
I have examined the book and find it to be an excellent book for learning the practical aspects of geotechnical engineering. The author is uptodate and thorough, yet he explains in a very down-to-earth style, by photographs and numerical examples, some very real engineering problems a geotechnical engineer is likely to face in practice. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The best help for a newcomer to geotechnical engineering...
This excellent text eased my transition from analytical chemistry work and toxicology into the fascinating field of geotechnical engineering, helping me grasp both the methodology and the reasoning behind numerous geotechnical analyses -- from the most fundamental basics of soil classification to the empirical, working, and theoretical underpinnings of rising head/falling tail flexible membrane permeametry. Coduto's book also sheds rays of light upon the ephemeral calculations beloved by the writers of ASTM methodology: Get this book, you will not be disappointed!

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Beginner's Resource
Coduto has done a great job in producing an entry level geotechnical engineering book. It does not go into thhe level of detail needed at times, but serves as a good resource for students learning about soils and geotechnical engineering. Very easy to understand and follow, and provides many diagrams and photos for better understanding. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A very basic, easy-to-read book...
A good book for those looking for a very basic, easy-to-read, book. It does have exercises after each chapter, which is good for students. However, many of them are very "repetitive"; the only difference between them are the numbers used in them. I should add that there aren't much challenging problems; most of them are easy.

The book doesn't go deep in some important topics. In some cases the theory seems to be just a "brief intro" to the topic, rather than a real discussion about it. Of course, this does not mean it's a bad book... but it should be taken into account (as the title says) that it deals with the very "fundamentals" of geotechnical engineering.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Geotechnical Book!
The chapters are written in practical sequence and contains many worked out examples, Illustrations and charts. For the student it has 100% of what you need, and for the practicing Geotechnical Engineer 90% of what you want. Hope the next edition contains computer disk!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fundamentals of Geotechnical Engineering
It's excellent book for introduction to Geotechinical Engineering. Only problem I had with this book is that I was not familiar with SI units, but you will get use to it later as you solve some problems by yourelf. There is occassional typos errors with example problems and equation you may need to be careful. Other than that it is still the best book I've read in regards to Geotechincal subject. The book is generally easy to read and understand.

5-0 out of 5 stars EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEERING!

3-0 out of 5 stars The best introduction to geotechnical earthquake engineering
Yes, this is an excellent overall introduction to the geotechnical aspects of earthquake engineering. We use it regularly in practice. The sections on seismic hazard analysis and seismic slope stability are particularly strong.

4-0 out of 5 stars the best available
Topics in geotechnical earthquake engineering is one of the
most active fields and always in rapid changing. Only with
several years off, the book by Professor Kramer is going to
be out-of-dated. Yet it is the BEST book available so far on
this topic.
I found the information in this book is useful for learning and
understanding, yet for the most excellent descriptions, we
have to refer directly to the scattered publications of
Berkeley School (i.e. Prof. H.Seed, R. Seed and J. Bray et al).

5-0 out of 5 stars good references
This book is good for graduate level. It contains lots of principles and applications in this field. References listed in the book are very useful as a starting point in geotech research.

1-0 out of 5 stars NOT A WELL WRITTEN TEXTBOOK!
I am a graduate student studying geotechnical engineering and have used this book in my class. The problems at the end of each chapter are extremely difficult to do given the information in the textbook. I found myself constantly going to the library to attempt to get extra information which was almost always impossible to find. In fact, after spending hours on one problem, I talked to my professor about it and she spoke to the author of the book and he realized that the problem was not even possible to solve! I completely wasted hours of my time trying to solve it and it couldn't even be solved! Also, when a symbol for a constant is mentioned in the book, it is very difficult to go back and scan the pages to find out what the symbol stands for and what the correct equation is. Maybe the author can include a summary of symbols and what they stand for at the beginning of each chapter.

I would not recommend this textbook although I know that it is one of the few Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering textbooks out there.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best text in the field!
One of the few books on geotechnical earthquake engineering. Treatment is extensive though it does not dwell in the specialist details for most topics. The chapter on "Ground response analysis" is excellent. I recently learnt of this professional software, "ProSHKAE" using the theory of this chapter to formulate its algorithm. I relied upon this book for a large part of my undergraduate research. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Reference
It is a good book, used as the requred text for the graduate soil mechanics class at UC Berkeley. I learned a lot from it. There are also other good references there, e.g. Soil Mechanics and Foundations by Muni Budhu.

5-0 out of 5 stars If there were 6 stars to give...I would
As a Geotechnical engineer in a graduate program I can honestly say that this is my most frequently consulted reference.
More accessible and practical than Mitchell, or Taylor, (though not as theoretical or fundamental).

Holtz & Kovacs is a clear step above Das, Coduto, or Huang in scholarship.

This is a book that you keep for your engineering career.

5-0 out of 5 stars Under-graduate Soil Mechanics
This soil mechanics book is one of the best put-together books I have come across. The CD included with the book makes it well worth the high cost. The video clips along with the animated demonstration media clips are extremely helpful in grasping the idea at hand. The follow-along labs. are very helpful. Design of flow nets is covered exceptionally well. Certainly one of my favorite textbooks.

5-0 out of 5 stars Soil Mechanics and Foundations
This is an outstanding new textbook covering the field of soil mechanics and foundation engineering, which has for so long been populated with very mediocre titles. It is the first book to do a proper job of integrating the more recent advances in soil mechanics (most notably soil plasticity and critical state constitutive models) into a proper description of soil strength. The included software is also outstanding in its application to the teaching of soil mechanics.

I have found it to be very useful in my own teaching, and also in my own practice as a geotechnical engineer. Compared with so many of the other books that still fail to cover shear strength and stress-strain relationships properly, this one is nothing short of a breath of fresh air. It is not cheap (what worthwhile book is ?) but in my case the cost is secondary in importance to the material it contains.

Recommended highly for both practitioners and academics in civil engineering. ... Read more

I used this book in the university and now that I'm working I still use it frecuently because it explains to you very good things in a very easy way.

Another problem of this book is that it might be a little too advance for undergraduate student if it's the first time you ever see soil mechanics, but in general terms it's a good book. ... Read more
