Book Description

A half century after its invention, and after several waves of optimism and pessimism, holography is now poised to achieve widespread application. Holograms are now being used as tools in many industries, from heads-up displays in aircraft to directing interconnections in massively parallel computing. Acoustic holograms can provide three-dimensional images of internal organs without surgery or dangerous radiation, and holography forms the basis of several other forms of nondestructive testing. This book provides both a review of the development of the field and of the applications likely to be important in the 21st century. It begins with a review by Emmett Leith, one of the inventors of holography - or re-inventors, after Denis Gabor's original work in 1947. Two chapters discuss the frontiers of holographic imaging, including color holograms and stereographic movies. Several subsequent chapters describe novel methods of forming and viewing holographic images, including the use of low-coherence sources or even computers to generate the holograms. The book concludes with a sampling of new applications of holography, including its uses in improving the efficiency of solar cells, in nondestructive testing, in improving the coherence properties of light, in data storage, and in investigations of fundamental physics. ... Book Description

The ever-increasing requirements of product quality and reliability demand more efficient measuring and testing methods. Developed in the past decade, shearography--also called speckle pattern shearing interferometry--is a coherent-optical measuring and testing method, similar to holographic interferometry. This book describes the development of second-generation digital shearography, which is especially effective in nondestructive testing, strain measurement, and vibration analysis due to its relative insensitivity to environmental disturbances. ... Book Description

This book is an introduction to digital optics, presenting the basic concepts necessary to master working in the field on a professional level. It represents an attempt to unify two allied directions which have appeared at the boundary between optics and computer science, digital image processing and digital holography. It reflects the integration of computers into modern optical and imaging systems.

The book is aimed at comprehensive exposition of fundamentals of digital optics, or digital processing of optical and similar analog signals such as images, holograms, interferograms, etc. Distinctive features of the exposition are consecutive observance of the correspondence principle between analog signal transformations and their discrete representations, and emphasis on fast computational algorithms and adaptive processing methods.

A number of new contributions make the book a unique supplement to the existing literature on digital signal and image processing. Among these are a new approach to characterizing digital filters, a modified discrete representation of Fourier and Fresnel integral transforms, new efficient computational algorithms for signal convolution, spectral analysis, interpolation and generating 2-D random signals, a unified representation of fast orthogonal transform design of local adaptive linear and rank filters for image restoration, enhancement and object location. The book also discusses solutions of a broad circle of practical problems of digital optics including automated diagnosis of interference in optical signals and images, image restoration and enhancement, object location in images, and the digital synthesis of holograms.

Book Description

After 1776, the former American colonies began to reimagine themselves as a unified, self-created community. Technologies had an important role in the resulting national narratives, and a few technologies assumed particular prominence. Among these were the axe, the mill, the canal, the railroad, and the irrigation dam. In this book David Nye explores the stories that clustered around these technologies. In doing so, he rediscovers an American story of origins, with America conceived as a second creation built in harmony with God's first creation.

While mainstream Americans constructed technological foundation stories to explain their place in the New World, however, marginalized groups told other stories of destruction and loss. Native Americans protested the loss of their forests, fishermen resisted the construction of dams, and early environmentalists feared the exhaustionof resources. A water mill could be viewed as the kernel of a new community or as a new way to exploit labor. If passengers comprehended railways as part of a larger narrative about American expansion and progress, many farmers attacked railroad land grants. To explore these contradictions, Nye devotes alternating chapters to narratives of second creation and to narratives of those who rejected it.

Nye draws on popular literature, speeches, advertisements, paintings, and many other media to create a history of American foundation stories. He shows how these stories were revised periodically, as social and economic conditions changed, without ever erasing the earlier stories entirely. The image of the isolated frontier family carving a homestead out of the wilderness with an axe persists to this day, alongside later images and narratives. In the book's conclusion, Nye considers the relation between these earlier stories and such later American developments as the conservation movement, narratives of environmental recovery, and the idealization of wilderness.

5-0 out of 5 stars draws together U.S. history and environmentalism
This short book showed me a great deal about both U.S. history and environmentalism. The extensive notes and huge bibliography mark the book not just as inviting severe academic scrutiny but as a pithy summary of a lifetime of information. If my library was as large as this bibliography, I'd feel obligated to open it to the public.

The book is organized around technologies that were used in the white settlement of the U.S.: the different and more efficient American axe (and the log cabin), the water powered mill, the canal and the railroad, and irrigation infrastructure such as dams. With these various technogies over time settlers "improved" the land they found. They felt it took both nature's "first creation" and their efforts at "second creation" to complete the work and make the land truly suitable for life. After years of wondering, here finally is an explanation of what early settlers were thinking when they did things that now seem extremely ecologically destructive.

The book calls out four assumptions of second creation: i) grid surveys were a good way to apportion and settle the fairly uniform land ii) free markets allowed individuals to do whatever made most sense without regard to legislative edicts and local monopolies iii) resources --especially land-- were abundant so that population growth didn't have to worry about the downward resource spiral suggested by Malthus and iv) the universe supported changes at no cost rather than levying an entropic tax on every effort at long-term progress. All four were critical to underpinning our foundation story; all four were eventually thrown in the dustbin of history. Those neat squares are a hallmark of flying over the western U.S., but they condemned neighbors to live a half mile apart rather than in towns, and they dismally failed to promote individual ownership of lands that needed to be irrigated. I'll let the book fill out the details of the remaining three assumptions.

I'd wondered casually about but never seriously questioned the emphasis on water power rather than steam power in the early U.S. I learned our thinkers were glad surfeit of rivers and lack of coal leaned this way, because water power was thought to be more natural and hence to have beneficial sociological effects! Many early investors honestly thought that so long as mills used water power rather than steam power, they couldn't create a downtrodden working class like British mills. I also learned that mills were common in the Southern states too; although they arrived there a generation later, they weren't completely absent as I had thought.

Even though I live near historic Lowell Massachusetts ("spindle city") and thought I was quite familiar with the history of mills in the U.S., the book taught me some new local details. It alerted me to the former existence of the Middlesex Canal that extended almost 30 miles from the Merrimack River to Boston, and to the original construction of the Pawtucket Canal not for the mills but for transportation. Once I knew to look for the Middlesex Canal, I found maps, an interpretive museum which I visited, and even remaining bits and pieces explaining odd landscape features that had never made sense before.

I was also alerted to the fact that the old gristmill I'm familiar with near the Wayside Inn in Sudbury Massachusetts was in fact a reconstruction early in the last century.

And the many references led me to 'The Education of Henry Adams', an autobiography that although clearly a century old speaks to our time. My old public library, which has a vault in the basement and some materials that go back to the sixteen hundreds, still had a copy on its open shelves. When checking it out I commented to the librarian I was glad the library had so many "old" books, and she in turn commented that she was glad to see at least one patron using the older book room.

As time passed and as settlement proceeded westward, the necessary technologies expanded from things each individual could manipulate to things that could only be done by huge collectives. One man could make a clearing with an axe. But only the federal government could construct Boulder Dam. The individualism that's so tightly woven into the U.S. persona made less and less sense as settlement proceeded into the high plains and the arid regions. Even in the already settled east, large civil engineering works such as water pumping stations were once highly visible public technology. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A complete, in-depth book and CD-ROM technical manual
Holograms & Holography: Design, Techniques, & Commercial Applications is a complete, in-depth book and CD-ROM technical manual for the combination of physics and optics that allows the creating of a beautiful, shiny, three-dimensional image on a two-dimensional surface. From the myriad uses of hologram technology to the economic value of holograms and how to create them with a computer, Holograms & Holography Design is more than a straightforward instruction book - it also has helpful instructions for how to best put holograms to commercial and practical use. The text is "intermediate to advanced" level; while it covers some very complex and technical subjects, it strives to do so in an explicitly clear manner, that anyone with a basic understanding of the physics involved can grasp. Diagrams, appendices, glossary, and an index complete the handy accessibility of this reference. The CD-ROM that comes with the book contains hologram-related images, animations, and web sites. In order to view the CD-ROM's files, a separate graphics program software such as Paint Shop Pro or Visio is required for the image files, and a separate movie player such as Quicktime, Windows Media Player, or Real Player Plug-in is required for the movies. Adobe Acrobat Reader and any web browser software (such as Netscape) are also useful for taking full advantage of the CD-ROM. Highly recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars Informative Book on a Interesting Subject
John Vaccas' Book, "Holograms & Holography" provides IT professionals, Web Developers and Security personnel with an insight into the development, maintenance, and many uses of Holograms in the digital era. I was especially interested in the history and application behind holograms, which described in the first chapter, stimulates you to read on. Mr. Vacca goes on to describe many additional and practical uses of hologram technology in IT today before describing in technical detail the design and development of holographic images. Overall the book acts as a complete reference to hologram technology and even includes a free CD-ROM that provides a gallery of holographic images as well as the software that was used to develop and manipulate these images. An excellent read on a subject that is somewhat uncharted territory to most IT professionals.

1-0 out of 5 stars This book is a misleading con
This book is inaccurate, out of date and misleading. It should never have been published, but as it has been the "author" and publisher should at least have had the grace to acknowledge the fact that much of the content has been copied wholesale from previously published papers and web sites. It won't help anyone to make or understand holograms - its science is confusing and wrong, its techniques are even more confusing and inadequate.
As an editor of a holography book myself I declare an interest, but I would have been pleased to see a good book on the topic. This book is not it. In fact, it's utter rubbish (how's that for a carefully reasoned response?)

1-0 out of 5 stars This is by far the worst book on holograms in print
I believe this book does a great disservice to our industry bringing the worst "Internet ethics" into the realm of technical literature. It exploits the fact that there is a real need for a new book on this subject and cynically fails to deliver the goods, whilst disingenuously dressing up the package to make a quick sale. most of the text has simply been lifted from other sources (mostly the internet where one can read it for free) and is now several years out of date. The new reader would have no reason to suspect this, however, as in the author's "end notes" he cites his sources as being from the last couple of years. That might not matter, except that the world has moved on and it is now a little sad, to read chapters about building a studio for silver halide holography, as though we were in 1981 rather than 2001. It's like reading a typewriter manual, or a guidebook for Windows 3.1. - it's just not relevant anymore.

5-0 out of 5 stars College level context but yet extremely entertaining!!!
Having graduate with a Bachelors of Science in Electo-Optics I found John's treatment of this subject very through but, unlike my rather dry college textbooks, very enlighting. Highly recommended reading for anyone with an interest in the future of technology. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book on practical holography
Saxby's book is a must have for everyone involved in holography and is worth the high price. I have read several books on holography and this book is by far the best resource on practical holography.

This books covers all the practical aspects of holography from setting up a holography lab to making advanced holograms.

The explanations on the practical aspects are basic enough so that it can be understood by the interested layman.

It also includes more in-depth sections on several aspects of holography such as a chemical analysis of developers, mathematical aspects of holography, Fourrier imaging,... which makes this book a good reference for the professional as well.

The new layout of the third edition has dramatically improved the readability of the book. The third edition has been updated and includes the latest information on the new materials and laser diodes.

Further update on Practical Holography. Pearson Education, who now own Prentice-Hall, have sold the last copy , but - good news - they will reprint single copies to individual order, until the next edition comes out. I am now working on a third edition, to be published by Institute of Physics Publishing towards the end of 2002. Agfa materials are no longer available, but BB and Slavich emulsions work well with all the formulas in the 2nd Edn.

It's a pity that Saxby's "Practical Holography" isno longer in print. It covers a lot of ground. While the tone is frequently technical and too mathematical for the layman, this is compensated for by thenumerous practical illustrations and examples.

The developer and bleachformulary is excellent. While I eventually settled on D-19 rather thanmixing my own developers, I have not found another bleach as satisfactoryor simple as his #2 formula.

The section on building your own hugeplastic lenses for collimation over large plate areas remains a novel andpractical approach to an ongoing problem.

This book contains useful formulas and derivations which may not be in other books, but the English is awful. It also has some significant technical mistakes in some equations. I can't believe Kluwer published this. Quoting from page 7, "In real application, it very frequently happens . Very that noise randomly replaces signal values that in this case are completely lost. In such situation, in general, the model of impulse noise is used." If I were Kluwer, I'd do a product recall, edit the book and release it under a different title. ... Read more

Book Description

This book is an introduction to electron holography, a newly developed technique for observing and measuring microscopic structures of matter and fields using the wave nature of electrons. It describes principles, experimental details, and observation examples for vortices in superconductors, the magnetic domain structure in ferromagnets, and for fundamental phenomena of quantum mechanics such as the single-electron build up of an interference pattern and the Aharonov-Bohm effect. The most recent information in this rapidly evolving field is included in this new edition, for example, the dynamical observation of vortices in superconductors. ... Read more
